After watching this, I keep a spare solid-colored shirt on my car with me in case I get stuck in traffic and the woman in front of me starts to sing.
Hahaha 😜😆
I thought I was the only one.
Same here ... lime green for me.
My man!
Great idea!
this was so theatrical, dramatic, and unrealistic, I absolutely love it. to hell with reality.
Damn straight. Reality sucks sometimes
😅
La La Land - a dreamy, unrealistic musical that has the most realistic ending ever. pure cinema.
You should watch a Bollywood movie sometime lol
if you really think about it what makes reality suck is people. You, us, them, those, all of us contribute to suck. Just look at the comment section in videos. You change this by being the change you wanna see and become strong enough to be able to afford to take the hits as they come yet you stay sticking to your guns.
One of the best openings in any movie.
I think it'd have made for a far greater credits scene, putting it right at the start of the film was quite a mistake as many people walked out/stopped watching because of it. Damien Chazelle said it's to make sure people are aware of what to expect and that it's a musical... yet ironically nothing else in the movie even comes close to this. If it was at the end, I think it'd summarise the film and put a nice message on it, perfect to lift spirits after the emotional ending.
Certainly not
les miserable?
Ryan i agree.
@@RyanTheCreator Disagree. This was the perfect opening, and the ending was the perfect ending. But that's fine. You think whatever you want to think.

Grand. I will never get over the fact that this was shot in ONE TAKE. The video of this song is highly underrated.
I just realized as I was watching,, there’s no cuts - just straight through 😳
apparently it was cut into 3 shots, with super sneaky cuts,
i'd guess the first is when the blue car at 0:53 covers the whole height of the screen.
there is almost certainly another at 2:38, and i thiiiink the last is at 3:03 when the guy jumps on the car,
when he jumps off, the guy with the hat appears behind him (the same guy who was on the truck at 2:55) :D
it really is a beautiful scene and masterfully choreographed and edited :)
Wouldn't it be 2 cuts though, since it's 3 shots?
it actually was not
a lovely night was one take. this has a few cuts and they definitely took a lot of takes with this. one takes are a lot easier with two people
I still get chills every time I watch this scene

Who says it isn’t a musical? It is in my family…
I’ve dreamed of that long before this movie came out!
Wait until you find the ending
Worked at a banquet place and it literally felt like I was working at a musical.
But I don't want the ending to be like this 😭
I’m not sure why but this film always make me cry so much. The thought of people chasing their dreams really tear me up. Maybe because I wish I had something I love enough to chase after with all my strength like they do.
That's an interesting perspective, to hear someone with a lack of a dream...I really want you to have something deep down you want more than anything. For me, it's to be an actor, which this movie obviously touches on haham i find it very inspiring. Wishing you well
I feel exactly the same as you
I tear up all all the time with this movie and all its songs. I came to the comments hoping to not be alone. I’m not sure why I tear up but it’s along the lines of what you mention
Indeed, I can relate to that sentiment.
Same here. I cry so much when watching this movie. It truly is the dreamer's movie.
Damien Chazelle, how in the world did you manage to choreograph that last finale of all of them standing on top of their cars perfectly synchronized? Hollywood, we need more musicals like this!
It was actually the actress/singer Mandy Moore who choreographed it. Damien Chazelle directed it. They all did a fantastic job with it.
I totally agree about needing more musicals
CGI helps - looks like one take but I bet it's not
@@kvdp9543 the behind the scenes videos show how a lot of the scenes in the film were done in one take - including this one. Shot on Panavision too, I believe it was on an Arri Trinity stabiliser and they introduced the camera operator to the actors as the other actor in the scene, basically as if they were filming from a person’s perspective - unbelievable direction and creative vision
@@ChrisTailor for 80 years it's been claimed that the Nicholas Brothers and Cab Calloway was all shot in one take, but one can see quite clearly that it's not. In this day and age I just don't see why they would attempt it in one take, given that it's almost impossible to pull it off AND the result clearly looks manufactured. Sorry to be a cynic, but I just don't trust the dream-makers in *****wood to tell it straight.

Imagine being that one person who doesn't close their car door at the same time as the other people... would they have to redo the take because of you? I'm anxious just thinking about it...
Actually, they add visual effect for the truck back door in the end sequence, because its impossible to close truck door with that speed in real life.

This should be LA’s Olympic opening ceremonies for 2028.
oooh yeah, it will be great
I think about that day
I left him at a Greyhound station
West of Santa Fé
We were seventeen, but he was sweet and it was true
Still I did what I had to do
'Cause I just knew
Summer Sunday nights
We'd sink into our seats
Right as they dimmed out all the lights
A Technicolor world made out of music and machine
It called me to be on that screen
And live inside each scene
Without a nickel to my name
Hopped a bus, here I came
Could be brave or just insane
We'll have to see
'Cause maybe in that sleepy town
He'll sit one day, the lights are down
He'll see my face and think of how he
Used to know me
Climb these hills
I'm reaching for the heights
And chasing all the lights that shine
And when they let you down
You'll get up off the ground
'Cause morning rolls around
And it's another day of sun
I hear 'em ev'ry day
The rhythms in the canyons
That'll never fade away
The ballads in the barrooms
Left by those who came before
They say "you gotta want it more"
So I bang on ev'ry door
And even when the answer's "no"
Or when my money's running low
The dusty mic and neon glow
Are all I need
And someday as I sing my song
A small-town kid'll come along
That'll be the thing to push him on and go go
Climb these hills
I'm reaching for the heights
And chasing all the lights that shine
And when they let you down
You'll get up off the ground
'Cause morning rolls around
And it's another day of sun
And when they let you down
The morning rolls around
It's another day of sun
It's another day of sun (oh)
It's another day of sun (sun sun sun sun)
It's just another day of sun (oh)
Just another day of sun (oh)

Anybody else think Damien Chazelle should direct more musicals? This was just straight up fire 🔥
I wonder why he couldn’t do the Greatest Showman. I know he was busy with First Man but still
He's best at that. His space movies suck and party movies are sub-par and gross. He's definitely good when music is involved, otherwise he's kind of clueless
This scene always gives me chills. It's a groundbreaking and incredible accomplishment. A tracking shot for the ages. Not to burst anyone's bubble, but it's not one continuous shot. There are three edits in it all together, that reveal themselves when you watch it 100 times like I have.
Plus, I watched a mini documentary that explained everything that went into filming this. I won't spoil anything else about it, it's easy to find on Google if you're so inclined.
Bottom line, though, this is an wonderful and awe inspiring sequence. I never get tired of it. A true celebration of musical creativity.
A few years ago, the dance school I attended used this song for my tap class during our summer recital. You have no idea how much nostalgia this song gives me, reminiscent to when things were happier, and simpler. Props to anyone who reads this.
Id be stoked if I was in a class that used this song. Thats awesome

Pretty obvious that they're causing the traffic.
@Leah yea what you said
No car traffic is inevitable. Need to build public transport and walkable cities over more freeways.
@@georgelaxtonRight, freeways are nightmare infrastructure
Ironically, these ramps connect the Harbor Freeway’s Express Lanes - which host the Metro J Line BRT - to the Century Freeway’s HOV lanes, where the Metro C Line runs down the median. Directly under this scene is the Harbor Freeway station where those lines connect.
So, despite being in a fake traffic jam, they’re in one of the more transit rich parts of South LA.

Truly the car city of car cities
Just too bad it's so hard to find a soundstage in L.A. I guess, or they could have recreated the set without disrupting traffic
@@WillHirschUK
Not too much of a disruption actually, it was filmed on a very strange express lane overpass not far from LAX. And I believe they did it very early in the morning.
I've been on that overpass several times and there's almost nobody on it at any given point. So they really didn't cause too much disruption. I'm glad they did it on location. Looks so much much better!
@@WillHirschUKNo sound stage could recreate that panorama.
This was shot on the I-110 to I-105 HOV Flyover, which is easily closed for filing without causing much disruption - at least on weekends and holidays, and in this case over a Summer weekend away from any holidays. The regular lanes stayed open, so drivers could still switch between the interstates. All that traffic you see below is real!

However, as a film student who has now had to study this film, I can say that it is a true masterpiece. My opinion hasn’t changed; I still don’t particularly like the film, but technically, it is spectacular. There is so much thought put into every single thing you see on and off screen.
