    Wow... I totally thought her dress flying up at the end must have been a wind machine. It's so fantastic when those amazing accidents happen.

      i was so sure of that until now. And I have probably watched this scene at least 30 times in the last 18 hours alone. (Watched the movie for the first time last night)

      The dancer saved the moment by just continuing on without showing surprise or hesitating. Well done.

      I thought it was a wind machine, but also that it was incredibly tacky. It took me out of the movie. That was the moment that I decided I probably wasn't going to like this movie. Then her facing the camera with that big fake grin, ugh. I thought she ruined the whole scene.

    • @siya4ful
      @siya4ful 5 лет назад +74

      turtledove saying that she “ruined the whole scene” because of one moment that wasn’t even intentional is a bit of a stretch. And personally, i loves that moment bc it was as theatrical as everything around her

    Damien said it in his behind the scenes version the dancers brought some of their cars to the shoot. And the freeway had to be shut down for 3 days, one for rehearsal and two days for shooting. And he also talked about how disappointed he was when he turned up for rehearsals because there was so much he hadn't considered in the dance. The freeway was sloped so they couldn't figure out which angle to shoot in, it messed up some of the dancers' moves, the camera wasn't as fluid as they'd hoped, and there was a heat advisory warning for the hottest day of the year. And even on the last day the sky was super cloudy so they couldn't shoot for hours (the song is called another day of sun after all they need a harsh glare to shoot) and then the dancers kept sweating out, and in the truck opening scene the handle broke and nobody could open it.
    I have literally no idea how they pulled off one of the best things I've seen this year.
    Damien said he was so unhappy and thought it would be a mess, he seriously considered even cutting this whole dance altogether because it was so hard to do.

Every single little details, every movement, every angle, EVERYTHING was perfectly done and I'm so so so happy they made this happen. Damien, Mandy and every every single person involved is amazing! Absolutely genius! This is probably the best thing in the world! I remember watching this scene for the first time in theaters and I was so happy and blown away and when everybody got back into their car and shut the door and the title LA LA LAND popped up I WAS SO FREAKING EMOTIONAL AND WAS GOING TO STAND UP AND CLAP. She was not supposed to say the song had a cut after the spin. A lot of critics were applauding how the songs were one take.

      Why lie?

      That’s because they were applauding the scenes that WERE indeed one take (she did mention it). Critics are critics because they know what they are talking about - cinematic shots included & they know which parts of the scenes are one take and which ones aren’t

      They had two cameras, a crane and a steadicam. Had to be at least one cut!

    Wow it's amazing how many details they have to handle. I have so much respect for all of them. The movie is so fantastic thanks to all the departments that worked in it, but sadly not many people think about it.
