The global nuclear conflict clearly takes place between MM and MM TRW. It is possible there was a limited nuclear war with a larger, final one that takes place after the conclusion of TRW. But, none of the people at the oil refinery, or Max himself, ever references any kind of functioning civil society or govt structure of any kind. Even the opening narration alludes to some kind of nuclear conflict, though to what extent, again, unclear. Beyond thunderdome clear shows the nuclear war was global and extensive. In the Road Warrior, it unlikely a full on nuclear war was underway at that time, but, a LIMITED nuclear exchange, imo, had occurred even if Australia was not directly hit. To me, the idea that no nuclear exchange between MM and MM: TRW, is unlikely.
In Furiosa, they mention the following wars: The Oil War (mentioned in Road Warrior) and the Battle between 3 nations (presumably, the USA, Soviet Union and another country, which caused the nuclear exchange). Australia WAS directly hit, as hinted in the third movie, as well as the fact they're a NATO member with naval bases.

The thing I find fascinating about the wasteland setting is given the young age of the lost boys in Beyond Thunderdome someone was still operating large jet airliners that far into the collapse where gas is being fought over by roving gangs and places like bartertown have already been established.
I like to think that George Miller is an unreliable narrator trying to piece together the 'saga' of Mad Max, but with limited information, hence the inconsistencies and occasional vagueness. It's also worth pointing out that the version of Max in 'Fury Road' would have had to have been born after the apocalypse in order to explain why the world has degraded so rapidly, so really, the continuity between the films is not something worth obsessing over.
Well the comic confirms its the same Max from the other films. I'm sure George just wanted someone fit & younger for a better performance in action scenes.
Well, they were out in the middle of western Australia, so it probably took the collapse of civilization years to catchup. But, where do they keep getting gas from? Like civilization completely collapses, and yet years later, people are still driving around with gas guzzlers. You need oil rigs, a refinery, a supply chain to get that out to local refueling stations, power plants and power lines, and pumps, you’ll also need oil and oil filters. The fact that "mad maxs savages" can be used as shorthand in reviews or discussions of games and movies and everyone just instantly knows what type of enemies/bad guys they should picture really shows the impact this series has uad on pop culture. And honestly im fine with the series lore being a bit messy and Max himself being more a folk hero than anything. Can always just write off the inconsistencies (like his age) or seemingly impossible bits as story tellers embelishing the tales when repeating them
Bro you got so much wrong about the 1st mad max film... the original stock cop cars were holden monaros, only the interceptor was a ford, also max left broken hill the civillised area for the wasteland
Considering they give absolutely no back story or even dialouge to Max in Fury Road we have to assume his back story is the same but maybe set in a different timeline
Mad Max is one of my favorite movie franchises hands down, I remember watching it nearly every time I would catch it on tv. I saw Fury Road in theaters and it was glorious wild ride all the way trough. I don’t know about this new one though, I like the character of Furiosa but in the trailers I’ve seen so far it seems like too much cgi. To me the beauty of those movies was in the practical effects and the grittiness. . Although I loved Fury Road some of it was a little over the top with the storm, very cool scene altogether and because it was so cool it gets a pass. I just love the movies and I’m looking forward to seeing this one too
Fury Road looks like it is set many decades into a post-apocalyptic future (or after the first Mad Max), in which case Max should be 100 years old or something. But he is not, so that is the part that confuses me.
I guess I always like lore for things. I'm big about consistency within a franchise. This doesn't mean I oppose ALL retcons, but I feel retcons should make sense, feel logical within the universe, etc. I also don't mind just fun romp around the world stories. My bigger fear with almost all modern stuff is people injecting modern politics into them. RARELY does it make sense to do so, and it almost always is ham-fisted and not fitting or worse - preachy.
I mean of course I can appreciate a story for what it is . but when larger world building is presented and its not necessarily well built, I get very frustrated. I can sympathise though because obviously the franchise wasnt made with a huge plan in place. Maybe Ive just been watching too many DnD streams. But it really makes such a difference with pieces of world building slide in together rather than being a mess of new ideas and retcons
The comics are canon, the game isn't As george miller wrote the comics but the game wasn't made by him, even tho he was going to make an game but warner bros basically stole his notes and made their own game
I've come to the conclusion that the Mad Max in Fury Road is a different person to the Mel Gibson's Mad Max. This is the timeline I found online: Mad Max 1984, Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior 1987 - 1988, Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome 2003 - 2005, Furiosa 2034 & Mad Max: Fury Road 2050. If Mel Gibsons was in his early 20s in Mad Max that would make him about 90 in Fury Road. If you assume Max is the same character in Fury Road and that Mad Max and Furiosa were about the same age then the younger Furiosa would happen before the original Mad Max where there was still some semblance of society, which doesn't work. So, the idea is that Mad Max in Fury Road is either a descendant or someone taking on the persona. Originally, I thought it could be the feral kid from Mad Max 2 based on the mannerisms of Mad Max in Fury Road but that doesn’t work with the timeline above, the feral kid would be in his late 60s or possibly 70 in Fury Road.
@@JB-nj2wr The comics were an adaptation of what was originally planned as a TV series and an explanation for why Mad Max still has his iconic car. However, the Mad Max timeline still doesn't match up with the Furiosa/Fury Road timeline unless Max has somehow become immortal (possibly the only logical explanation). People have calculated that Fury Road happens around 2050 and the original Mad Max happens in 1984, that is 66 years in between Mad Max and Fury Road. Even if you bring the original Mad Max forward in time it doesn't matchup with the events/time period in Furiosa, assuming Max and Furiosa are about the same age in Fury Road (in the real-world Charlize Theron is two years older than Tom Hardy). If Max is meant to be the same character, then Furiosa/Fury Road is a revisionist timeline that doesn't match up with the original Mad Max Trilogy.
First of all I want to enjoy a Movie by it's own. Buuuut my (kind of) OCD Brain part ;) wants things to get orginazed, otherwise it runs thought circles in the background :D. So I would love to have an continuity and timeline. For me it even would make the hole thing more epic, because then I can see it as a big complex story, insteed of single enjoyments, which would tickle my intelect more ;).
I don't know why it never occurred to me, but if the Main Force Patrol or town's people were armed with guns they could have ambushed the bikers and killed them all.
I always assumed the nuclear apocalypse happened between 1 and 2. The changes in scenery and vibe are just too drastic. The intro to 3 strikes me more as a *in case you didn't already know* type deal. Also, Aussie Aussie Aussie!
As far as im concerned, nothing outside of mad max, the road warrior and thunderdome are cannon. The other stuff is just weak, to me. It's fine with me if others disagree, thats just my take.

Can always just write off the inconsistencies (like his age) or seemingly impossible bits as story tellers embelishing the tales when repeating them
Christopher to Tony :
So listen T there’s this ladder right. Some guy named Eckhart bought it off Paulie last Thursday. Can you believe this guy Ton
Bro you got so much wrong about the 1st mad max film... the original stock cop cars were holden monaros, only the interceptor was a ford, also max left broken hill the civillised area for the wasteland
3:13 Mild-Mannered Max, now on Hallmark.
"Will Furiosa add to the lore of the franchise or create more inconsistencies?"
Yes.
I look at Fury Road as a soft reboot.
For me Post thunder dome max is more a dread pirate Robert type character
I thought that we never get real confirmation that Goose actually died??? He’s horribly burned but we never find out that he actually dies???
I just love the movies and I’m looking forward to seeing this one too
since he's been part of your pfp for so long, i hope you make a short vid on Doge passing away :(
Fist of the North Star feels like it’s part of mad max if it happened in Japan
For me it depends some films are set up with lore in mind others aren't so it just depends on how it's all set out for me.
I remember playing the mad max game. I beat it on the lowest difficulty, and it was a pain in the butt for me both times!
Huh? The game doesn't have a difficulty slider.
I thought it did. Then again, I haven’t played it in years.
Fury Road looks like it is set many decades into a post-apocalyptic future (or after the first Mad Max), in which case Max should be 100 years old or something. But he is not, so that is the part that confuses me.
It does matter
Don't be a sidekick named Goose, you will not make it
Am i the only one that thought furiosa got her wheels from the same person that gives Max his in the game?
But it really makes such a difference with pieces of world building slide in together rather than being a mess of new ideas and retcons
furiosa was so fucking good
The comics are canon, the game isn't
As george miller wrote the comics but the game wasn't made by him, even tho he was going to make an game but warner bros basically stole his notes and made their own game
It’s the same person there’s comics to explain who he gets another car
Max's life expectancy increased thanks to radiation
First of all I want to enjoy a Movie by it's own. Buuuut my (kind of) OCD Brain part ;) wants things to get orginazed, otherwise it runs thought circles in the background :D. So I would love to have an continuity and timeline. For me it even would make the hole thing more epic, because then I can see it as a big complex story, insteed of single enjoyments, which would tickle my intelect more ;).
The first Mad Max is the best.
Day 2 of asking for electric state video
I don't know why it never occurred to me, but if the Main Force Patrol or town's people were armed with guns they could have ambushed the bikers and killed them all.
Deeper dive!
I always assumed the nuclear apocalypse happened between 1 and 2. The changes in scenery and vibe are just too drastic. The intro to 3 strikes me more as a *in case you didn't already know* type deal.
Also, Aussie Aussie Aussie!
After the first, all of the movies are wasteland fairy tales and there isn't a true canon. That's the greater context.
Went to see the movie today. Honestly, it was that bad. I enjoyed it
Youre profile picture passed away😢
Yeah the Tom Hardy Mad Max should be it's own thing, as it super does not make sense with his age and all
@ultrabrian8151 I know, I just wish it wasn't 😃
As far as im concerned, nothing outside of mad max, the road warrior and thunderdome are cannon. The other stuff is just weak, to me. It's fine with me if others disagree, thats just my take.
dumb take, maybe stop talking
Regardless of what happened to the world, WHY did they stay in the desert???? I mean why didn't they head towards the coastlines??? More food, more water on the coast so why stay in the driest parts of the driest deserts in Australian???? Anyone???
Thats what im also tryna fugure out lmao
we know that the Government was at least aware of the oceans drying, so maybe there's a reason its unexolained?
Max doesnt really give anymore details other than its "just salt" ,
Hello everyvone mad max our world ended in 1996. It,s confirmed the global nuclear holocaust fury road is happening after road warrior
1984 1987 2002 2010.
Furiosa most definitely expands the lore while still being “Miller laughing at the nerds” levels of vague and mysterious
The mad max game is not canon
I am not going to see a "Max Max" movie without actual Mad Max in it
I was sceptical too, but it was great
Fake fan ofc you dont care, it should obviously add to the lore
