The best theory I've ever heard for the shakiness of any definitive mad max timeline is that when you're watching a mad max movie, you're watching a folk tale about an archetypal "man in black" or "knight errant" that is told and retold and changed in a verbal history, rather than watching the events depicted first-hand (like the viewer is watching a cinematic adaptation of a story told around campfires in the wasteland) The max's are always different men, who only maybe existed in any sense, and whose actions in the wasteland inspired stories of influential strangers that got blended into a monomyth. It's the head-canon I live with anyway

Look at Fallout the franchise, there we know, bombs dropped and roughly 200 years later things pick up with the MC, now it's clear and cut, there are people from the time of the bombs because of hibernation chambers but most people, that just kept on living inside or outside of vaults, generation after generation, slowly forgetting things, sacred old world information etc. In mad max, i'm not sure who is meant to be how old, Immortan Joe was alive during pre apocalyptic world, tops hes 70 but could even be 50 in fury road that means there is but one new born generation if we measure it by a full life cycle, from birth to old age, that generation that was born right after the fall, haven't gotten even old yet. Joe bore children, multiple, many many ones, each taking time to grow. He has children from multiple mothers, so that widens the approximate time-line going counter intuitive from what we know. What about Max, Furiosa, every information we know and or we see promotes a different assumption, i don't know if the fall was 2 years ago, 20, or 200 because all seems like a likely possibility. Max was a Cop ? Hold on. A cop or is that some kind of, post apocalyptic lingo to something totally else, was max alive during the normal world too ? But Furiosa was born after, yet they seem the same age given her hair was intentionally made greyish in the movie, or was he born after or did furiosa just barely born just right after the fall ? Because of Max and Immortan Joe and Furiosa i cannot see a way there is more then one new born generation into the "Fall" wich would be fine, if things didn't also try to tell me that the old world is ancient, like 200 years old. This is why i don't wanna think about Mad Max lore because it just pisses me off. Otherwise i love to enjoy the film because it's just so fucking metal.
Another interesting thing is, a piece of ancillary media I can't remember stated the Pacific Ocean is drastically more shallow and receded while the Atlantic is flooded and the Ice Caps have melted. This is because the fact all the nuclear weapons in the world being shot in all directions from 7 different nations had tectonic/volcanic consequences that significantly altered ocean currents (which, in turn lose their ability to regulate climate). So, it's said Sidney harbor is dry and we see the salt desert that used to be underwater because the Australian Pacific Coast is now 500km further out. It creates an environmental feedback loop with the additional myriad effects of nuclear war that affect the entire area of the world and keep getting worse. Meanwhile, coastal America and Europe are now underwater and the effects of nuclear war are likely even worse there. Meaning these parts of the world are even more irradiated with infrastructure even more ruined while being submerged and possibly even seeing a mini Ice Age. Not good.
Quentin Kenihan, who plays Imortan Joe's son, Corpus Collosus, was told by doctors he probably wouldn't live long enough to see puberty, let alone live up to the age of 50. I'm really glad to see he's still here with us and was ecstatic to see him in the mad max movie.
@@shaun3276Richard Carter is in Furiosa, even though he sadly passed in 2019, I wonder if there is any footage with Quentin Kenihan, since he did say he was reprising his role before he passed.

you are all wrong and really need to watch the movies again. Mad Max 1 is set just as the fabric of society is collapsing, Mad Max 2 is set after the apocalypse, Beyond thunderdome makes it clear a nuclear event happened, Fury road has war boys with cancer from the radiation.

@@Evandarizzler the Mad Max canon is so convoluted that whether something is canon or not is always up to debate, but some things in the Mad Max game have been pretty much completely changed in Furiosa, most noticeably Scrotus.
@@Evandarizzler It isn't. The only canon content are the films and the comic series. The game is an amalgamation of unused ideas from previously canceled games and unreleased scripts. Which naturally causes it to conflict with the canon story pretty heavily. And ultimately, George Miller was not at all involved with that game as he's been with every film
I dont think the host is that "young", but Fukushima wasnt famous around the nuclear "ethos" only because the 2011 accident. Fukushima was famous already during the late 70s and early 80s as part of the project that would propel Japan to the forefront of the use of nuclear energy, a fact very much in notoriety given that a country which was the only one ever destroyed by a nuclear bomb would be the forefront of the nuclear energy "ideal". The plant started operation on those times, and through the 80s was considered one of the safest in the World. It is proposed that if they did not changed its design philosophy during the 90s, and instead kept their focus, the accident in 2011 would never have happened, as people point out changes for efficiency in the 1990s and 2000s were the primary drive to the weakness that the accident relied on to happen.
wrt the timeline and Max' age: Miller is on record that Max may actually not be 1 person, but rather a collection of several real life dudes that oral history/mythology lumped into 1 mythological figure - kinda like Robin Hood or King Arthur.
Maybe my favorite thing about the Mad Max video game that WB produced is that they not only invented very little for the world building, but they included details intended for the not-yet-begun sequel/prequel to Fury Road. Also, while the game's plot wasn't very interesting, it had one of the best endings I've ever experienced in a video game.
That was awesome. The one detail that bugs me, is that by Fury Road most steering wheels are "RHT" set up, even though the entire story should take place in a world where "LHT" was predominant, and all salvaged vehicles should reflect that with the steering on the right side of the vehicle.
Pardon but the "Fall" happens between Mad Max and the Road Warrior, Nukes are used between Road Warrior and Thunderdome. No radiation in story before Thunderdome or Furry Road.
3:45 Well, if you adjust the film's budget for inflation, it still only comes out to around $1.5 million... Imagine that kind of success in 2024. We get about a dozen movies per year with a budget near $100M and they are almost always huge flops. That doesn't even consider the fact that marketing budgets are typically around 1.5× the production budget. Hollywood/film industry seems like a huge money laundering scheme nowadays doesn't it?
I wouldn't have thought that listening to 45 mins of minutes of detail about a series of moves I enjoyed but didn't think too much about would be interesting but you Bryce have changed my mind
In Furiosa, the history man refers to the nuclear part of the fall as the "Tri-nation nuclear war" so instead of just 'the two tribes', wouldn't it be three?
Maybe this is how the timeline goes: Mad Max 1 takes place in 1982 Mad max 2 takes place in 1985 Beyond thunder dome and furiosa take place around the same time Fury road takes place in 2015
I applaud ! You did a really good job of it in making this collection. 'The Wasteland' is the one consistent character through all the films, and the way you delivered all of this was very well chosen. The Wasteland is in our heads... May Good Luck be upon you ~ B.
Only thing the messes with me a little in the newer movies is that there are smart phones used as mirrors in furiosa but you could say that either the rest of the world kept going for a while or that the newer films are set further in the future. If like to think that the rest of the work was still civilised fod a while and that mad max is still pretty old but they couldnt get mel gibson to play as max so they just had to do with someone younger
This video is perfect for a mad max themed DnD game I’m running. I didn’t think I’d be blessed with a lore video on the badlands, may you ride shiny and chrome!
Just a note on Immortan Joe His Gigahorse wasn't actually a V16. Initially they were just going to give it a V8 and put a panel over it to make it look like two V8s but then they got a budget increase so they did it for real. The engine is two V8 engines side by side, connected by an absurdly complicated and custom built gearbox. The reason behind this (and the rest of the Gigahorse's design) was based on the idea of "In a place where most people don't have one of anything, he has two of everything" (or something along those lines, I don't remember the exact quote.
Since I was a kid I've always loved the mad Max movies. Something in them just spoke to me that this was going to be the future. Horrible people fighting for what's left of resources. But the way they use Joe in the fury road movie. in the way he uses the ideal of The Valkyrie snatching you from the battlefield to bring you Valhalla.that was just chef's kiss on that world.from the moment the first war boy yelled witnessed me as he falls out the citadel trying to get max back in. I know this movie was going to blow my mind. I can't even imagine if they actually gave Miller the money and kept on the series back in the day with Mel Gibson. Big fan of The Road Warrior and Beyond Thunder dome as a kid. I watched Mad Max a few times but I was so confused. It is not post apocalypse and I cant understand anything they say. I still appreciate it tho. But I was so fucking excited for Fury Road. It was critically acclaimed. And it had a little of all my favorite shit except maybe sci fi but some a that too. I won't say I was disappointed but I would've been if not for one thing: the dude playing a monster double guitar FLAME THROWER and he's on like a giant speaker car and he's also on bungie cords. That was and remains the most Rock 'N Roll thing Ive ever witnessed. It is so fucking cool. That alone made it worth it
some elaboration on some of the lore, the MFP was a special force above normal police that served as the last line of enforcement on the open roads. was a highly dangerous job with a short life expectancy for its officers. Max points out in the first film discussing his retirement that he has lived far longer than anyone in the department, wishing to get out before he dies or consumed with PTSD from the job. then as the story unfolds he snaps, hence Mad Max, I also never thought Nightrider was ever mad but was in a state of an adrenaline rush, as he just escaped custody, killed his parole officers and stole the MFP Pursuit car ie. the black Holden HQ, which the black XB max takes is the replacement for. I also consider the pilot the same character, and his son the product of the blonde he fancies in MM2. could also be the same bum in the matrix, or the mouth of Sauron, that actor gets around.
if you think about fukushima. what would happen if someone nuked a place with stuff like uranium? like directly on it, wouldnt the explosion be way bigger? what if thats why theres radiation in austrailia? a huge huge nuke with a lot of uranium?
"The chief of the Great Northern Tribe, also known as the Feral Child", what a 1-2 sucker punch of lore (I've never consumed any Mad media until your video)
Max explained it to the children in the third movie. I don't remember the explanation but explained why world is a desert. I think they mean revolution, not evolution. Like the heroes of the American Revolution were considered villains by the King.
Damn now I'm hella interested in this whole world of Mad Max! I love these explanation vids, easy to understand while also being super in detail of the world and it's inhabitants. I 💚 it!!

Ive heard a theory that the max in fury road is the feral kid from the 2nd movie. Thats why he has the music box at the beginning. The same music box thst max gave him in the 2nd movie.
I'm honestly baffled by the google results for how many a few is. I have always thought a few is exactly 3, a couple is exactly 2, and several is anywhere from 4-9 (although 6 can be a half dozen). 10-11 would be almost a dozen. I always thought it was a set language rule in English, but I guess I was wrong. Learned something totally random on a Mad Max video, lol. I grew up watching Mad Max in the 80s, when we went to our dad's for the weekend we got to watch all the good action and horror movies back then. lol. Loved Fury Road, still have to see the new one.
I just want to say thank you for educating me I am a long time fan of Mad Max but I did not see that coming I didn't know anything about the comic book references and how it all tied in thank you very much
Another group to mention is in the movie furiosa they briefly mention that there is tribes of nomadic cannibals that scoop up the remains of these road wars. Is it possible that their main export is the leather cloths made frome the skin of the ones they eat?
There's a Gastown in Vancouver, it's not named for gasoline, it's named for farts, Gassy Jack, who the neighbourhood was named after, had a fetish for beans.

So if you go back and check the hall of justice sign, theres a plaque on the left side that says Established 1983, and given the wear and tear its more likely mad max 1 takes place in 1985 and 2 is in 1988.

Not good.
kinda like the Metro 2035 lore
sounds like it was more than just a "nuclear skirmish" between two warring tribes
@@raidermaxx2324 imagine use weapons that can blow up entire cities and keep talking about fucking "skirmish". Its all the madness of this universe !
If that is true, then I guess Miller did not research the issue much.
He’s not with us anymore. He died in 2018. 😢
@@shaun3276Richard Carter is in Furiosa, even though he sadly passed in 2019, I wonder if there is any footage with Quentin Kenihan, since he did say he was reprising his role before he passed.
@@shaun3276 oh no! 😪
i thought Rictus Erectus was Immortan Joe's son
@@raidermaxx2324he has a few sons. Idk who is whom. So idk who to grieve for so I shall look it up now.
Its fun to think that the Rock Riders were actually formed by former motorcross and freestyle champions surviving the apocalypse the way they do best
It makes perfect sense that he would also direct happy feet…
When you’re good at something it’s crosses all mediums.
Regarding Barter Town, Katherine Janeway summed it up nicely "Someone has something someone else wants and trade is born"
Can’t thank you enough for this long in depth video on the wasteland of Mad Max.
I was 18 years old when mad max came out and one of my friends older brother was in the vigalanties mc. 13 years later i moved into a house a few streets away from mays house. Cheers from Australia
Bryce making a forty five minute video dedicated to Mad Max??
SIGN ME *THE FUCK* UP!
The making of Mad Max could be a movie all on it's own!
This dude has me staring into his eyes and nodding as is he was talking to me.
you are all wrong and really need to watch the movies again. Mad Max 1 is set just as the fabric of society is collapsing, Mad Max 2 is set after the apocalypse, Beyond thunderdome makes it clear a nuclear event happened, Fury road has war boys with cancer from the radiation.
Excited to see this video! Super bummed to see you pushing Better Help after they repeatedly have been busted not background checking their “therapists” or having any accountability for them pissing on video calls or missing appointments or all sorts of things, including selling your data.
" hey fella! Hey fella!.... What a turkey... Hey fella, you're a turkey! You know that?"
Bro forgot the videogame
If I remember that game isn't cannot. But that's good hidden gem
The game sadly isn’t canon, but it’s just considered another legend of the wastes.
@@FischerFilmStudio actually it is
@@Evandarizzler the Mad Max canon is so convoluted that whether something is canon or not is always up to debate, but some things in the Mad Max game have been pretty much completely changed in Furiosa, most noticeably Scrotus.
Fukishima was famous??? not in my country(America) we never heard of it until it melted down lol
@@raidermaxx2324”in the world” not America. Which btw isn’t a country.
wrt the timeline and Max' age: Miller is on record that Max may actually not be 1 person, but rather a collection of several real life dudes that oral history/mythology lumped into 1 mythological figure - kinda like Robin Hood or King Arthur.
0:06 as an Australian I can confirm this
The actual video starts at 3:28
The first Mad Max I saw was Thunderdome (also how I learned who Tina Turner was 😂) nice to hear about it again. "2 men enter, 1 man leaves!"
Spin the wheel! Who runs barter town!?!??!
MasterBlaster runs Barter town
It's kinda funny to me just how random Bryce picks his topics to go over.
Nice to hear some insight into World of Mad Max
Maybe my favorite thing about the Mad Max video game that WB produced is that they not only invented very little for the world building, but they included details intended for the not-yet-begun sequel/prequel to Fury Road. Also, while the game's plot wasn't very interesting, it had one of the best endings I've ever experienced in a video game.
Definitely more Mad Max please.
Thanks!
Thank you so much @ZED101!
That was awesome. The one detail that bugs me, is that by Fury Road most steering wheels are "RHT" set up, even though the entire story should take place in a world where "LHT" was predominant, and all salvaged vehicles should reflect that with the steering on the right side of the vehicle.
Yes, it bugs me too
This video is really making me want to replay the game
27:55 this is so interesting as when I watched Fury Road, it made me think of The Border Rievers on the anglo-scottish border and Tower houses
Pardon but the "Fall" happens between Mad Max and the Road Warrior, Nukes are used between Road Warrior and Thunderdome. No radiation in story before Thunderdome or Furry Road.
3:45
Well, if you adjust the film's budget for inflation, it still only comes out to around $1.5 million...
I’m here for the rants as well and the information. Thank you for your service 😅
Great video. I could tell you put ALOT of time and energy into this video. It deserves more views!
I DONT KNOW WHO IS MORE MAD, ME OR THIS WORLD!
Excellent vid and narrative. Youre giving the world depth. Thank you.
Maybe this is how the timeline goes:
Mad Max 1 takes place in 1982
Mad max 2 takes place in 1985
Beyond thunder dome and furiosa take place around the same time
Fury road takes place in 2015
As a guitar slinger, I can only imagine how cool playing coma doof must have been
I applaud ! You did a really good job of it in making this collection. 'The Wasteland' is the one consistent character through all the films, and the way you delivered all of this was very well chosen. The Wasteland is in our heads... May Good Luck be upon you ~ B.
As a long time fan of the MM franchise, this was awesome!! Nice work
Only thing the messes with me a little in the newer movies is that there are smart phones used as mirrors in furiosa but you could say that either the rest of the world kept going for a while or that the newer films are set further in the future.
Great job….making me confused! J/k the timeline being screwed is good info. Great job.
great video, mate
had a lot of fun
loving the vid, beard looks great!
Just a note on Immortan Joe
His Gigahorse wasn't actually a V16.
Super cool video. That's a bit of a heavy lift thinking that The Great Humongous was Goose but it's a cool theory.
The Captain's Girl in Mad Max 2 was played by Arkie Whitely, Brett Whitely's daughter. Great video! I love nerding out on time lines like this
Since I was a kid I've always loved the mad Max movies. How many delightful wonderful tasty treats we would have I don't know but it sounds good
I know your Hunger Games videos didn’t get the most views, but I really enjoyed all of them
11:18 fukushima nuclear power plant was active in 1971 the fall happened in 1983-1984 7:29 it definitely would have been a known place in the wasteland and Japan and the outback are close
yea but it didnt melt down until in the 2000's so it doenst make sense to reference it
@@raidermaxx2324 but it still existed... and a nuclear power plant would be a very hot location whether for scavenging or making a settlement
Please dive deeper into Mad Max in more videos. Thank you.
That alone made it worth it
26:15 Well, if Humongous isn't Goose then technically... He is the first?
For the budget of the original movie, they put out a really good product, especially for that time.
.. a timeless classic
2 mins in and i feel like ur looking into my soul especially with that ad
This was really engaging.
some elaboration on some of the lore, the MFP was a special force above normal police that served as the last line of enforcement on the open roads. was a highly dangerous job with a short life expectancy for its officers.
"The chief of the Great Northern Tribe, also known as the Feral Child", what a 1-2 sucker punch of lore (I've never consumed any Mad media until your video)
the buzzards vehicles always remind me of one of the cars from the Australian movie The Cars that Ate Paris (1974)
Max explained it to the children in the third movie. I don't remember the explanation but explained why world is a desert. I think they mean revolution, not evolution. Like the heroes of the American Revolution were considered villains by the King.
I had way too much fun watching the War Boys. Their last act is literally to go "Look how cool my finisher is!"
14:45 you are pointing in South Australia, bloody Seppo
Excellent encyclopedia. Turns "that looks supid" into "oh that makes alot of sense".
I literally just found your videos today and my FAVORITE part is your incoherent rants and side tangents and I feel like you deserve to know that
Loved every second of this video! So well done, I had to subscribe. 👏🏼👏🏼
I think the 45 years since the fall is in referral to the first mad max movie coming out exactly 45 years ago
I was thinking that too. It’s simple math!
16:33 That title was absolutely sick
Wait, it's done? I think I could have easily watched another hour. Thanks!
Thx now i understand the movie Hop and Glory much better!
Damn now I'm hella interested in this whole world of Mad Max! I love these explanation vids, easy to understand while also being super in detail of the world and it's inhabitants. I 💚 it!!
Some vehicles in Fury Road are post 80s like a R32 Skyline, The Gigahorse also has a Tesla emblem welded on its dashboard
Incredible work, Bryce! I have only seen Fury Road, but the franchise stuck with me. I learned so much from this video! Excited to see the new Furiosa. Thanks!
The big metal grate on the simi more then likely was already there on the truck. They didnt put it on for the film. This is peice that many trucka have on them. Thier called a Pilot but almost everyone calls them Cowcatchers.
More mad max please!
Love your work. Keep it up
Don't you just love Dementus' monster truck in Furiosa? 😂 Reminds me so much of here with those monster truck shows. They might have one someday.
Ive heard a theory that the max in fury road is the feral kid from the 2nd movie. Thats why he has the music box at the beginning. The same music box thst max gave him in the 2nd movie.
The production of the first movie was insane.
Love your videos.
"Thank you so much .. for the money" hahaha
Great content.
I just want to say thank you for educating me I am a long time fan of Mad Max but I did not see that coming I didn't know anything about the comic book references and how it all tied in thank you very much
The book Ridley Walker had a huge influence
As a fellow ADHD-er, I love your tangents 😂 1000/10 excellent content
Another group to mention is in the movie furiosa they briefly mention that there is tribes of nomadic cannibals that scoop up the remains of these road wars. Is it possible that their main export is the leather cloths made frome the skin of the ones they eat?
There's a Gastown in Vancouver, it's not named for gasoline, it's named for farts, Gassy Jack, who the neighbourhood was named after, had a fetish for beans.
I love that they're called the Boobalini. Totally love it.
“I am the scales of justice! Conductor of the choir of death! Sing, brother Heckler! Sing, brother Koch! Sing, brothers! Sing! SING!”
Am I the only one that thinks this RUclipsr and the main guy from New Rockstars, could be brothers? I mean their mannerisms, voice style and the way they talk with their head and hands in the camera is one in one.
So if you go back and check the hall of justice sign, theres a plaque on the left side that says Established 1983, and given the wear and tear its more likely mad max 1 takes place in 1985 and 2 is in 1988.
You have the best explain videos lol
