    I don’t think gen z is less attractive, I think it’s that we’ve changed our standard of who we expect to see in commercials, tv etc. Growing up in the early 2000’s pretty much every fashion model, super model, and even most lead actresses in tv were all super attractive, far more than the average person. Nowadays the fashion models for most clothing brands just look like regular people, because brands are far less picky about who they choose, which I personally think it’s a good thing. However just looking at media today and media at any point in history before 2010, there’s a stark difference in conventional attractiveness to those shown on camera, which gives the illusion like our generation ran out of attractive people to cast which just isn’t true

    • @SarahSmirnova

Whenever I come across an instagram post or yt video of anyone that’s supposed to be a 10/10 I just don’t really think they’re anything special anymore. It may just be because not only are we exposed to beautiful faces all the time but we are also exposed to the same type of beautiful face all the time. There’s no versatility, just the same copy paste people. And while yes they are objectively attractive, I just can’t bring myself to praise their looks because I feel like I can see their face anywhere. A big part of whether or not someone is attractive is the uniqueness of their features, at least for me. But the entirety of features makes up a beautiful face meaning that a thin lipped person can still be beautiful despite society going nutts over full lips. A wide nosed person, somebody with a high forehead, somebody with a round face, a long nose etc. All those features that are said to be less attractive can be (and often are) part of a beautiful face. Because the harmony of all these features make up a striking, lovely face. Younger women are not as fixated on the male gaze, there fore their over all looks, via make up, clothes, fabrics, textures, colours, haircuts, shapes in shilouettes, shoes, patterns, and accessories makes them look more unike and less like the ideal. Earlier generations did not embrace their uniqueness as much. Now young women (dare to) choose to accentuate features they want to enhance, rather than what society/the norm tells us to want to look like to fit in. I believe this is one of the factors as well. We want to look more diverse, we choose and dare to accentuate our unique features more than generations before us did. We used to do all we possible could to fit the mould. All the beauty books and tips and tricks was designed to trick the eye into believing we had for example long legs, even ratio lips, etc etc
    You were expected to hide and accentuate to look identical, according to the set norm, wich was never as wide and diverse as today.

      Those are still influenced by the male gaze. Women speak of the male gaze like it's a bad thing but it's what shaped civilization and continues to do so. Walls and pillars were erected from the male gaze. Male gaze is what shaped reality. It's a male super power. The male gaze can take a bad situation and turn it into a good situation. Why do you think there are men that are into weird things?

      That's a matter of opinion and depends who you're comparing her to.
      For a start, she's wearing weave, would you find her as attractive if she wore her much shorter and tighter hair?
      You might, but the question still needs to be asked? I just see a really bad wig and an okay face, cute, but nothing special. Perhaps the wig is actually detracting from her facial attractiveness and she'd look better without it.
      Most women today are literally filtered up to the eyeballs and hardly have any of their actual natural selves on show, so it's difficult to authentically rate any of them as attractive or not until you see them first thing in the morning with literally everything in their make-up routine taken off.

    From my experience, when people decide they dislike your personality they start to attack your facial features. It has nothing to do with the actualy facial features or whether they actually find you beautiful or ugly. Somebody who has a bad personality will immediately lose all the good looks in most people's eyes. For Zeigler, people dislike the way she talks, call her cringe and her personality unpleasant and that is why they started to also attack her looks. I remember people praising her looks before her interviews came out and only afterwards did people start saying bad things about the way she looks. For Bailey, people were upset about the Disney remake so they attacked her appearance. It's never actually about the appearance, except maybe in the case of Anya Taylor-Joy who people also make fun of for having wide set eyes but I don't think people particularly dislike her personality (correct me if I'm wrong because I don't know much about her). She just had the misfortune of being lumped together with the other two at a time when it's really popular to bring down women for their looks.

    I'm a younger millennial, and I think my generation has started plenty if unhealthy beauty trends. But it just seems like now, particularly with many members of the Gen Z, the only thing that counts in this world is how good your face looks. I see people rip each other apart so much more online now on really specific physical features that I don't feel like millennials and older generations paid much attention to. The assesments made, sound like the detailed analyses made by plastic surgeons. We mostly cared about not being "fat," which isn't good, but losing weight or keeping in shape is a lot more attainable than changing your bone structure. It just seems everything is even more unattainable now, and requires surgery. If anything, I think the older generations look more "plain" compared to Gen Z.
    My mom and her twin brother have physical impacts from alcohol exposure. Their eyes aren't wide apart at all, rather, bones are missing from their faces. They git very lucky that they aren't particularly disfigured because of it. My gran didn't care to put down the bottle unfortunately.

    • @SarahSmirnova
      @SarahSmirnova 8 месяцев назад +5

      I mean, your bone structure, facial features, and height are, for the most part, genetically pre-determined for you. However, when you're young and your bones and muscles are still malleable, illnesses (like chronic sinus infections) and nutritional deficiencies can deform the shape of the face and stunt the growth of a child who would otherwise have a genetic predisposition to be tall-statured and have a normal, well-proportioned face.
      After that point, the only option the individual has is to practice healthy eating habits and work out so they make their physique more attractive and possibly get cosmetic surgery on their face if they can afford it.

    • @Anya-jk2dy
      @Anya-jk2dy 8 месяцев назад +17

      @@SarahSmirnovaThat's the problem though. I think we as a society are looking too hard at our features and assessing where we (or our parents) went "wrong," and thinking we need to correct things that aren't broken. Especially in the western world, where people have access to nutrition and healthcare, and prenatal care. Any deviation from health growing up has trivial differences in one's appearance in most cases (unless you're a plastic surgeon, then any "flaw" is obvious). Gen Z particularly, seems to have a plastic surgeon's view on beauty, and is too open minded towards cosmetic surgery. Everyone has their own destiny, but, this is extremely destructive for kids. More younger and younger people are wasting time with goals of attaining "beauty" rather than what kind of skills, and actions, and service to society that they want to achieve. Looks fade, but trades don't. It seems like many members of Gen Z have a hard time accepting that most people look "average" and will always look that way.
      Way back, plastic surgery was more commonly reconstructive. I wish we could go back to that view.

    • @SarahSmirnova
      @SarahSmirnova 8 месяцев назад +2

      @Anya-jk2dy One thing I do agree with you on here is that no one, gen z or otherwise, should focus exclusively on beauty or attractiveness at the expense of developing non-physical traits like intelligence, character, and skill competence. And yes, the "beauty fades" aphorism is just a biological reality. Very few people have the income to afford rejuvenative surgeries and procedures when they become middle-aged. Even the ones who have the luxury to get their faces and skin reconstructed won't look like they are 25 when they are 60. It's just not possible, at least with our current technology. Though, I would like to see a world where aging is a thing of the past, along with intellectual, psychological, and physical disorders. But of course, these are all complicated topics. The molecular mechanisms of aging are only starting to be understood, therefore research in this area isn't really that extensive yet. As for physical and mental handicaps and their societal and individual life quality impact, it seems most people don't want to openly discuss this topic because eugenics is perceived as ableist and politically incorrect by the general populace.
      I have seen a number of people comment under this video that intelligence and beauty are correlated. I do agree, to an extent, that those two phenomena are related for a few reasons. 1. People who are more intelligent tend to take better care of themselves, tend to practice healthy nutritional habits, and work out regularly. These practices also have a bidirectional correlation with intelligence because eating nutritious foods and doing vigorous exercise stimulate neurogenesis. 2. Facial symmetry, to a certain point, is correlated with intelligence. Notice that most, or all, congenital diseases characterized by facial abnormalities also have intellectual impairment as a clinical feature. Just like with any general phenomenon, there are exceptions to this. I have known very intelligent people in my life who hated exercise and ate very poorly. I suppose spending long periods of time doing research and writing-intensive work, which often requires sitting, can cause one to neglect one's health.
      But I think there is a point where IQ and attractiveness start to not be correlated, or only have a negligible association. For example, almost anyone can see that most individuals who have made significant contributions to the fields of science, medicine, and philosophy throughout history were, at best, completely average-looking. Some were even unattractive. Yet, almost none of these people had IQ scores below 140.
      It doesn't seem that, in the real world, average looks automatically = average IQ and that exceptional looks = exceptionally high IQ.
      I realize these are anecdotes, but, for now, I can only go by real world examples to substantiate my claim because studies in intelligence, ones which follow actual academic rigour, seem to be scarce in the public domain for people to read and interpret.

    • @Anya-jk2dy
      @Anya-jk2dy 8 месяцев назад +2

      I see where you are coming from, but for things often considered vain, such as anti-aging--is it actually necessary and an effective usage of resources, since humans can expect to all die one day? Consider that studies on intelligence, including genes that may or may not contribute to intelligence are not all-inclusive to the human population, rather, on certain populations. Similarly, genes associated with "attractiveness" are not all inclusive to the general human population, rather, based on certain populations. And definitions of beauty change.
      As you know, going under the knife contributes neither to intelligence, longevity, or long-term improvement in aging. Similarly, parents who go through IVF and select the "best" embryos are not guaranteed more successful, attractive or healthy offspring. That's why eugenics is largely shaky, on top of small factions of people that have the potential to do harmful things with it.

I don't understand why this is the case, since in makeup theory we always teach that normally spaced eyes are the norm (it's when you can fit the width of the eye between the eyes) but wide set eyes are considered more attractive throughout history (I've always used Rihanna and Kate Moss as example)...
    It's the reason why we usually do makeup the way we do it most often without even realizing : light inner corner to widen that space and dark outer corner to elongate the eye toward the temples.

    I am considered aesthetically unattractive . I grew up in the 60s. The ideal was pug nosed, blue eyed, blond, with pink skin and thin lips, with perfectly straight, white teeth. As a child I was dark, thin, tall, prominently nosed, buck toothed,beige skinned,narrowed eye bridge. I grew up in a conservative state, and frequently was subjected to “Whar ARE you” questions, and had been attacked by anti-semites. Now I am fat, old, etc. i never thought I was unattractive, but when I was othered by other white people, it was difficult to find a date, and made me cynical. When I moved out of the country, it was a new world. I suppose being a foreigner, I was seen as exotic, so in a year I had dates like I never had in my entire life. The US beauty standards are so narrow

      Acting, imo, is not that difficult of a skill to master (unless we're talking about extreme and unique roles that require eccentric performances). Any regular person can act as a different regular person with just a little bit of practice so looks have always been the priority when it comes to casting in movies.
      The actresses today look unattractive to these Millenial and Gen X commenters because, well, the beauty standards have changed like they always keep changing. This is not a new phenomenon. I know people laude Marilyn Monroe as the most beautiful woman of all time but I swear, seeing her photos from even from her prime days today, she just appears 'meh' to me. She's not ugly but she's definitely not the most beautiful woman ever by today's standards.
      I was born in the mid 90s (which is on the boarder of millenial and gen z) so I'm a Millenial when it comes to some things and a Gen Z when it comes to others. I honestly find both Millenial actresses AND Gen z actresses attractive. However, in another 25 years, I imagine I won't be attracted to the newly upcoming Gen Alpha actresses because their beauty standards would be different. I sure hope I have better hobbies then than making videos about how I'm not attracted to women who are young enough to be my kids.

    One easy, obvious explanation: many of the images we're using to judge Gen Z's attractiveness were shot with phones or pocket cameras, which have wide-angle lenses that distort images in a way that's unflattering to most human faces. Without getting too technical, all lenses have a focal length, and a lens that shows you roughly what your eye sees with minimal distortion will have a focal length of 50-55 mm. To flatter the human face, you want a longer lens, 85 - 135 mm, with a lot of photographers (me, for example) favoring the 105 mm lens as kindest to the largest number of human faces.
    Phone lenses are way short of that optimal length, most being only 24 to 27 mm, which gives the same effect as looking in a convex funhouse mirror, though we're all so used to phone selfies that we hardly notice the distortion any more. (If an expensive phone claims to have a "zoom" lens, it's generally just twice as long as the 24-27 mm lens, making it not a true zoom but a "what the eye sees" 50-55 mm lens.) With very few and rare exceptions, no phone has a true zoom lens, though they may have what's called "digital zoom," which is basically just a partial enlargement of a wide-angle shot and doesn't correct the distortion that results from shooting at a short focal length.
    And, yes, one feature of that distortion will be to make eyes look farther apart. Wide-spaced eyes look beautiful when shot with a modest zoom but a little freakish when shot with a 24 mm camera phone.
    Try it yourself. Rent a camera with a 105 mm OPTICAL zoom lens and a tripod. Shoot a whole bunch of selfies. Then unscrew the camera from the tripod and screw on your cell phone, and, if the phone has a "zoom" option, use it. Shoot another round of selfies, as much like the first round as possible. Compare the images; I promise you, unless your face is flat as a pancake with all your features scrunched together in the middle, you will look A LOT better in the photos shot with the 105 mm optical zoom. In other words, some of the supposed changes in the way people look are really due to changes in equipment and media.

Something that has changed is the amount of make up, tan, eyebrow shaping, fillers, cosmetic procedures etc. Personally I find nearly all of it makes people less attractive, though I appreciate that ymmv. Given the popularity of the Insta baddie look that still prevails, and looking at women like Kim Kardashian and Kylie Jenner who started the whole super-curvy, big lips etc. trend that also still prevails I don't feel this is true tbh. All of these features lean more towards sexy. Even now that the "heroin chic" look is coming back and the curves are being reduced, it still has overall little to do with neotony (looks more haggard than youthful). That plus the recent, sudden surge in buccal fat removal which also makes people look the opposite of younger and cute, I do wonder how one would come to this conclusion.
      Everyone I've seen talk about Gen Z keeps saying how they look mature etc., especially in relation to the rise of normalized plastic surgery. See also the video "if you're under 18 you should not look like this..." by Nk's Wrld on this topic. I regularly hang out on TikTok where most Zoomers are and I do not see a push towards looking "cute" at all. Like, absolutely nowhere. Beauty basically comes down to health (healthy skin, hair, eyes, etc.), and facial symmetry, which also indirectly comes down to health (because this means that the whole body is most likely also symmetrical where it needs to be). Everything else is racial standards. Indeed, today they have stopped choosing very beautiful people for roles, giving preference to actors with whom an ordinary person associates themselves more. But all the actresses in the preview are clearly beautiful. Just not by Nordic standards.

    Just one small comment. If you are learning Portuguese, remember that most apps (including Babbel by the sounds of things) teach you Brazilian Portuguese. For European Portuguese, it is considered improper to use você for some reason (I don't know why though). They tend to use alternative forms.
    Also note that in Brazil, they say things like "estou pensando" while in Portugal, they say "estou a pensar" with those expressions meaning "I am thinking".
    In general, it goes like this in European Portuguese: estou + a + verb. Similarly for the other tenses, European Portuguese goes like: estava + a + verb e.g. estava a pensar (I was thinking).
    Ultimately, Brazilian Portuguese and European Portuguese do have some differences, significantly more so than the differences that exist between English from the UK and English from America.

Other differences are asking for café da manhã will get you a cup of coffee instead of breakfast (pequeno almoço), if she asks where is the banheiro instead of casa de banho (toilet in Portugal ) people might not know what she means, and she shouldn't be offended if someone calls her rapariga in Portugal (it means young girl and not prostitute like in Brazil), etc. If she plans on going to Portugal it might be helpful to learn the difference.

    Physiognomy is still used as a term in modern Greek but mostly for expressing a positive or negative first impression. I would say it is very subjective and not by any means an accurate tool, most people use it more like a gut feeling if anything. Personally, I think reading expressions is far more interesting, both in cartoons and in real life, as it can provide a better reading of person's character and his intentions. You could compare it if you want to how important is the casting of an actor based on his facial features compared to his acting skills, in cartoons it is about character design and animation, meaning the default aesthetics of a character and how those athletics move and interact in a fictional environment. You can absolutely have characters that are designed with those positive physiognomica characteristics that you described but if their animation, or performance (if we are talking about actors) is unexpressive they will pretty soon become forgettable. Think about it, an excretion altimetry is a series of different faces that we make to reveal different aspects of ourselves, you could say that by changing your expression you change your face to become a different person. In the US, Most internet sources site milenials being born from 1980 to 1995, which makes both zendaya and anaya gen z whom were born in 1996 and 1997, respectively. Gen z are born from 1996 to 2010 with some sources citing the cut off as 2012. Every generation is approximately 20 years with some being longer or shorter depending on geopolitical events (if you remember DARE education or where you were on 9/11, you're a millennial) or advancements in technology (if you remember dial up internet or didn't have a smart phone until late teens and early 20s, you're a millennial)
      On the longer side of generations, the greatest generation were born from 1901 to 1927. This generation spanned longer than 20 years due to the 1st world war and stunted production in many countries which pivoted any advancement in technology toward winning the war.
      Middle ground: 'Cuspers'--Because generations are as much defined by age/birth year as they are by the way geopolitical events effect society, the generational cut offs are not as fixed as people think them to be... which gives rise to what are called 'cuspers' (Anya and Zendaya), those who are born on the cusp of the cut off and can essentially choose to identify as Gen Z or millennial. Whether or not they identify as gen z or millennial would then depend on the political events they were effected by and/or if they have majority millennial sibling set versus a gen z sibling set (because their siblings would influence which media and pop culture they consume which also have generational differences that are not very apparent in older gen z but are very apparent with younger gen z)

I have seen sometimes that people will differentiate the people at the cusp of generations and give them their own label (example: Generation Jones being made up of late boomers and early Gen X), so maybe there can be another label for those at the cusp of Gen Z and millennial. I've seen Zillenial float around.

      The generational lines are not consistent across studies. They’re made up anyway. A 29 year old American millennial who grew up upper income in a city probably has more in common with a 26 year old of the same background than with the average 32 year old.

    • @joe395r
      @joe395r 8 месяцев назад +1

      @LiorGrian it is true that generational lines are not fixed across studies, but they are consistent based on geopolitical events,technology, and many other factors like economics. It may seem as though the 26 year old and the 32 year old from the same economic background have more in common at first glance than the average 32 year old due to shared socioeconomic factors but the 26 year old will not remember flying on a plane before TSA, they would have barely been conscious for the 2008 recession that both 32 year olds were present for, watching their friends and family lose their homes, graduating into a flailing job market with no way to pay our massive student loans.... Those are the kind of lines that define generations, and while shared economics and backgrounds are also factors, the size of their effect is much smaller than all the other events mentioned that define the outlook of a generation (for the most part).
      Middle ground: Each generation has subgroups due to the long span of generations, so you could be pointing out a potential subgroup

      @@samiam2088 how can "eyes too far apart" come down to fashion of the times if it persisted from the 1930s to the present? The "times" have changed at least 4 times since then yet this characteristic survived.
      Big expressive eyes are important for film acting, but they're also prevalent in cartoons, particularly anime. The reason being that large eyes infantilizes the character, associating them with innocence and goodness. It's why villains, in cartoons, rarely, if ever, have large, round eyes.

    • @WhoBlah21
      @WhoBlah21 8 месяцев назад +13

      To expand on sub.as.3058, I think the reason people think Gen Z look ugly is because they're the most exposed and documented generation on Earth.
      Back then young people mostly took photo during special occasion and vacation where not only they looked the best but had to prepare themselves because getting photos developed was a process. There was also a mindset of "I want this picture to look nice so we can look back at it in the distant future, to reminisce the our past in material form." While these days photos don't really mean much outside of commercials and branding use, our phones can catch 100s high definition pics/vids in a sec and store it instantly.
      Another point is that in the distant past media training was extremely important for celebrities and wealthy people, because there were so little access to them that they can control the narrative and perception of their character by selectively choosing what goes to the public and what stays private. Gen Z and even Millennials to an extent broke that mold.

    these kind of comments stem from multiple things, such as certain groups' idea of being superior to another.
    If these were men of colour playing traditionally white characters, people probably would have less to say, since women are more criticised for whatever they do in general. if people (jobless incels) on twitter can call Margot Robbie, a woman who fits the eurocentric beauty standard very well, mid, then you know people are just hating because its a woman.
    And the concept of beauty keeps evolving, just like how different body types and facial features have been in an out of trend for centuries, with the last century having a different ideal body for each decade. a beauty standard changed in 10 years!
    People also need to realise that beauty standards are different around the world, and that even among that, beauty is subjective. For example, skin bleaching and lightening in extremely popular in east, sea, and south asian cultures, since it represents a higher social status. however, in western countries, skin tanning is the norm.
    I once read about how someone had a straight nose, but in their country, a button nose was much preferred and they almost got surgery to change their nose. but once they went to south korea, everyone complimented them on their beautiful nose, since the beauty standard there is to have a straight nose with high nose bridge.
    Edit: and this ofc could also be because generations always have a dislike for generations before or after them.

    New generations have more unrealistic expectations. I think new generations are getting more and more superficial probably because of the advancements of social media. But they are also more unrealistic, like looking to appear a certain way that is not practical or real at all... or too attached too empty images, theories and words instead of focusing on reality itself, or what they really need. It started with my generation (I was born in 1990), I felt it, however, now its much worse... People have even less social skills nowadays... I attended University in London recently which confirmed what I think... I don't think young people now are unattractive, they do however, feel that way, no matter how good they look...it is just never enough good for them. Once again unrealistic expectations..

The beauty standard here are very different but I have noticed from old pics of my parent's generation that they were actually looking very mature. I blame our lifestyle rather than "beauty standards". Sure, in a white majority country other races might be unfairly judged. But I do agree that the current generation looks very immature regardlessof the race. And its all thanks to our food habits.
    Edit: i do have to point out that the beauty stansards here are very different to west. A big nose isn't really clowned upon. And jawline and cheekbones imo are universally found attractive.
