Thanks so much for making this video, I watched it back in 2013 and what you said about #10 cans I never forgot. I am 70 now and can't garden anymore but I have enough # 10 cans and dehydrated food to last me for the next 25 years.
It was a Linda's Pantry inspired day at my house. Made a run to Costco! Lol! The dehydrator is filled with raspberries, kiwi, bananas, and mangos. I SO need another dehydrator! Next up will be two big boxes of grapes that I bought. Then greens from our CSA box, onions from our garden, canned diced tomatoes, pineapple, and peaches, and finally, whatever produce is left in my fridge! We are headed out for a week of vacation soon. Don't want anything to go to waste. Time to buy more trays!
I'm revisiting your video, lol, AGAIN! I'm going to do this to make some soup mix packets for future use :) Going to grind them dehydrated tomatoes up. Thank you for keeping these great videos up!!
Dehydrated Diced Tomatoes are great to take camping, I like to take a lot of different dehydrated foods to make some really good and hearty soups out in the woods.
your videos are like having a friend in the kitchen showing how to do something beginning to end and includes a suggestion on how to clean the equipment used. i just love all of your videos and get something out of each one
Linda, BTW, you need to check out the Excaliber 9 tray like I've got. For some reason heated air moving horizontally in an enclosed box is more efficient without checking on it so often. I just finished making cantaloupe and peach leathers overnight at only 135 degrees.
Thanks for providing the populace with the tools to learn how to dehydrate; I've been wanting to buy a dehydrator. We love trail mixes and my parrots do to! Can you give me a brand or size you believe would work best for a seasoned chef? I heard you mention an 'excaliber'??
I just bought 2 #10 cans of diced tomatoes today, I looked you up to see if you did a video on how to dehydrate tomatoes from cans and...."of course you have!" Thank you Linda
Linda (I'm guessing that's your name!) you are my next favorite source of information about dehydrating. My first was the backpackingchef. You guys are both priceless. Thanks for the videos. Can't wait to watch more of your vids
BTW-- our Dollar Store has been selling veggies in larger cans for $1 a can! I should go buy some up! Do you ever buy the cans that have been dented for this in bulk? I was always taught that causes samanilla?
Tx for the fast answers!! I made a few bids on an excaliber...we'll see what happens! Also purchased some cans of tomatoes in large cans for .40 ea can at Dollar store and .50 a can at Dollar store...all were before due date and all were undented. Bought 35 cans in all. BUT...how do you dehydrate Whole peeled tomatoes? Do I slice or dice first then drain...or drain whole and just hydrate longer? What would you do?
For soups and stews I just throw them in dry and let them go. I eat more dry as chips then in cooking. Real pretty in jars if you use different color tomato
Can you please do a dehydrating playlist? Also, when you use these in soup, do you use them from the hard state or do you have to re-hydrate them first?
What other recipes would you use you dry sliced tomatoes for? I planted between 30 - 40 tomato plants this year and could use ideas on preserving them. I do can a lot of them but that does start to take up a lot of space.
Loved the Video - Diced tomatoes are on my list and next to try. Would like to try and make "sun" dried tomatoes - Thinking would just pour heated olive oil over the dried tomatoes - but how much oil to how much dried tomatoes? any suggestions? Thinking of giving jars of this for Christmas to the cooks in the family
I did my red and yellow cherry tomatoes as well as some grapes from Costco this week. The hardest part? Keeping my four year old from snacking on them ALL! Lol! :-D Another great video, and another fabulous excuse to go to Costco!!
Hi Linda, love your videos! I really wanted to tell you since you make so many Dehydrated foods, you should use a cozy!!! It will decrease your rehydration time!
Hi Linda! I enjoyed this video, I am thinking about getting a excalibur dehydrator because I have a large garden and would like to preserve more than I already do making sauces...I sent you an email!
Great video, I've gotten to really enjoy dehydrating.I do have a question about the dehydrator fabric you had there. Was it homemade? It appeared so and if it was where did you purchase the material? I know you can use parchment for liquids but I have been stuck when I needed to do small seeds and herbs etc.and ran out of the small square fabric.I too would like an Excalibur and don't want to spend more money on the Brand sheets. Thanks very much. Jim
Linda I put raw tomatoes into a zip Lock bag and froze them them last year. How would I dehydrate those ?do I need to cook off some of the liquid before dehydrating ?
I have been hesitant in dehydrating my store bought canned tomatoes because on one of the persons videos she stated they would taste like a metal can! Have you ever found this to be a problem? Is there a limit as to the date on the can, where dehydrating can be done?
Great idea, I dehydrate all the time but never thought to try the #10 cans of tomatoes. Thanks for the excellent idea! About how long did it take to dehydrate them? Thanks! Linda H
when adding to stews, soups or chili do you rehydrate first or toss in with chicken broth, tomatoes sauce or water in the cooking pot with all the other ingredients?
I got my American canner think it’s 215, just got me a dehydrator in Elite, now all I have to do is get the little machine to suck the air out of the jars. LOL expense Do you start with but I love new toys. Saw this thing about steaming juice out of fruit cut interesting.
i have a question i cut up fresh tomatoes and dehyrated them and then qround them to powder and them didnt come back like i thought they would . how much powder , would uyou say to use with water
are you close to any amish communities? I live in an Amish area and we go to their bent and dent stores, you can get #10 cans for 2 bucks and a bunch of other things for a good price.
I have a possibly stupid question. If I cook pinto beans out of the bag from a store for 2 hours on a simmer heat to make them edible, then dehydrate them, put them in a mylar bag, will they come to an edible state with boiling water so I can just add diced tomatoes to it to make a chili in LESS time out in the field on an open fire?
Thanks so much for making this video, I watched it back in 2013 and what you said about #10 cans I never forgot. I am 70 now and can't garden anymore but I have enough # 10 cans and dehydrated food to last me for the next 25 years.
Awesome 🍅🍅🍅
I hope she repeats it. I’m fairly new to her
Way to go! 😎
Isn't that wonderful! God bless you.
This video is from May 2013. 7+ years later you are still making an impact on people! Thank you so much. ❤️

It's amazing how much water is in tomatoes, which explains why the flavor is so intense after they're dehydrated. I love dehydrated tomatoes. :)
I'm revisiting your video, lol, AGAIN! I'm going to do this to make some soup mix packets for future use :) Going to grind them dehydrated tomatoes up. Thank you for keeping these great videos up!!
Soup mix packets are a great idea :)

I love my Excalibur. I'm single and a vegetarian. I was always throwing out produce. I cut my grocery bill in half using my Excalibur!

Thank you. Was wondering how long this would take!
Thanks for providing the populace with the tools to learn how to dehydrate; I've been wanting to buy a dehydrator. We love trail mixes and my parrots do to! Can you give me a brand or size you believe would work best for a seasoned chef? I heard you mention an 'excaliber'??
Awesome video again Linda. I've made my own Roma tomato powder and I still have some. It's great in Italian tomato sauce.

Linda, Do you still do as much dehydrating? I am enjoying the cooking in cast iron but would love to see more recipes on using dehydrated food.
you mentioned the possibility of over measuring due to the reduction in size. could you please comment on approximate portions for chili's soups etc?
Love you Linda 🤩 🙏. Learning a lot...thank you
For soups and stews I just throw them in dry and let them go. I eat more dry as chips then in cooking. Real pretty in jars if you use different color tomato

Thanks for this video, may I ask what you used the juice for (when you first drained the tomatoes from the can)? Thanks very much - Peter V.

Thanks for all your videos wondering do I need oxygen absorbers for storing dehydrated vegetables?
I added Italian seasonings to my tomatoes before drying
Where did you get the mesh trays. My dehydrated that I just bought today did not come with those.
I just have not seen any difference but for real long term the light could be a factor.
Great video, I've gotten to really enjoy dehydrating.I do have a question about the dehydrator fabric you had there. Was it homemade? It appeared so and if it was where did you purchase the material? Can you put dehydrated veggies like this right into a homemade soup that is cooking low and slow, and them re-hydrate that way?
Yes you can, just throw them in :0)
Linda I put raw tomatoes into a zip Lock bag and froze them them last year. How would I dehydrate those ?do I need to cook off some of the liquid before dehydrating ?

Hi Linda, What are those round things in your into video, they look good
thanks
thanks linda! you're awesome!
when adding to stews, soups or chili do you rehydrate first or toss in with chicken broth, tomatoes sauce or water in the cooking pot with all the other ingredients?
So what do you prefer the mylar bags or the canning jars with the air vacuumed out of it with the vacuum sealer or are both about the same?
I have alot of home canned tomatoes from last year. Do you treat them like comm canned when dehydrating?????????
I've got to get me another dehydrator.........ASAP !
Could you please help wanting to know which dehydrated vegetables go in Mylar bags and what goes in the food sealer bags TIA
Some ones going to poke their eye out with all those antlers hanging up there :p lol...
Do you have to store them in that bag or can they be stored in a glass. Lol Finish watching the video it answered my question. I love your videos
Glasses fine as long as you get the air out of it
I got my American canner think it’s 215, just got me a dehydrator in Elite, now all I have to do is get the little machine to suck the air out of the jars.
1/4 C veggie powder to 1C water = sauce consistency. check out OurHalfAcreHomestead to learn more from Mrs V..
are you close to any amish communities? I live in an Amish area and we go to their bent and dent stores, you can get #10 cans for 2 bucks and a bunch of other things for a good price.
Looks great
Hi linda I am in the UK where is the best place to get the mesh tray things xx
Do u spray lemon juice on tomatoes so the keep it color
Great idea! The ones you sliced from your garden, did you peel them? Do you dehydrate the fresh the same as the canned? Thanks again.
Linda, can I dehydrate Rotel tomatoes? Or do you have a recipe to make them?
i wondered if you make tomato paste and sauce from dehydrated tomatoes and if it tastes good?
I have a possibly stupid question. If I cook pinto beans out of the bag from a store for 2 hours on a simmer heat to make them edible, then dehydrate them, put them in a mylar bag, will they come to an edible state with boiling water so I can just add diced tomatoes to it to make a chili in LESS time out in the field on an open fire?
Yes. If you cook them, dehydrate, and then rehydrate, beans come back pretty quickly. I've noticed 10 or 12 minutes at the most.
Can I dehydrate pomegranate?
~LOL Tomatoes no... dehydrated ice cream yes~*lol*
The dehydrator trays fit and clean up well in the dishwasher. Just remove the silverware tray
Could you make a tomato sandwich from the slices?
thank you Linda. My question is what are the liners you use called, and can they be cleaned and reused"
I just bought my dehydrator and it came with 2 of those screens. They are plastic and washable.
Did you line your trays with something???
