A couple notes from my own avocado FD-ing experience. Avocados have oil in them so they will go rancid over time. For that reason I don't package them for long-term storage. I'd consider them to be for short term storage only for that reason. I tried blending them into a powder and the heat from the blender actually made them be mush because of the heat/oil. If you want a powder, I'd go with the bag and rolling pin method. I actually put mine in the freezer for storage after freeze drying just because I don't use them all that fast and I don't want the oil to turn on me. I have a few in my fridge right now waiting to be processed in the freeze dryer. I only use them in smoothies and this is perfect for that. I also freeze dry my berry and spinach blend and Greek yogurt for smoothies.
Great tips! Question about your FD another. Do you FD all the components separately (berries, spinach, yogurt) and then rehydrate and combine, or do you FD them as a mixture? I'm wanting to make smoothie packs for my kids and I asked can't figure out the best way to do it and still have a smoothie texture, not a flavored milk texture, if that makes sense

Great video. Unless you're dealing with powders don't worry so much about adding too much water. It's only going to soak up what it originally had if youre not leaving it to sit forever and then you can just dump off the excess. It's better than having hard pieces and rubbery pieces in food from being too conservative with the moisture.

Hi. Just letting you know that you can vacuum seal multiple jars at a time in your freeze dryer. Works really good and fast. Just put in a tray with jars lids lightly on and vacuum seal for two mins. You can RUclips it 😊
Have you had any issues with the plug on the back of the trays, taking it off and back on? I've heard that's a fragile point for the FD and I am scared to break it
We plug that hole with a wet paper towel loosely. Sometimes it blows that paper towel out, but we still a suction. We’ve had our FD for 5 years and never had a problem with it.
@@juliabrown5948 YES!!! More people have had to buy a new plug than you would understand. I've had it for 6 years and that little red tab breaks easily!!!! So cheap to buy a sealer and lids and just take a few seconds to close each one. Yep - I found out fast to NOT USE THE VERY EXPENSIVE FREEZE DRYER TO SEAL JARS! Just my opinion but . . .

Harvest Right freeze dryers are notorious for sending out untested, broken machines. There are Facebook groups dedicated to trying to help new owners. We just got ours working after 2 months, very little care from the company And absolutely NO HELP from them. There's a return shipping fee and restocking fee, figure roughly 1k dollars just to get it out of your home.
I freeze dry ready to eat guacamole, all ingredients combined. The taste and color are a bit different, however, still very delicious. Thank you for the great video.
I'm a new freeze dryer owner and am still learning what all I can put in there. Avocado will definitely be top of the list for the next runs! Right now I have rice, refried beans, and taco fillings going.
Put cilantro between layers of damp paper towel in a zipper bag... pretty good reconstitution of delicate leaves. This works well with FD bread slices or tortillas - wrapped in damp paper towel in zipper bag overnight in fridge. 👍
I am entering every giveaway for a freeze dryer I can find! Saving avocado might be the first thing I do :) Hubby just retired this summer. I love deals, but with just the two of us, finding the right preservation method can be a challenge with a few items esp. avocados.
Share one with someone else & the cost of one. You could also run batches of other people's food for pay or trade/ barter. That way the machine can help pay for itself. We use ours for leftovers allot, so no more waste.
Harvest right freeze dryer has a layaway plan. It was $250.00 down then you just pay on it until you pay it off. Once you pay it off they ship it to you. Although, I'm pretty sure it is shipping via semi truck because of the size & weight.
Oh a freeze dryer would be wonderful. Just the thought of preserving avocados is so exciting. I love them and can not eat a whole one, so something like this would be so nice for me. Cilantro is delicious. I would have never thought of freeze drying limes also. Goodness it all looks beautiful.
I also took my limes and zest them and obviously I extracted the juice and I saved the outer portion that was left over, and I intend to use those as parts of marinade which I just put in my freezer
I'd reccommend the oxygen and moisture absorbing pouches.. They're great for long term storage because they help remove whatever is left after you pull the vacuum..
@@joehajjar5246 I genuinely don't know what the brand is.. i had red ones that said "O2 absorber" and blue ones that said "O2O" nothing about a brand.. When you pull a vacuum, there's a bit of oxygen left. When there's a bit of oxygen left, the food can still oxidize.. The pouch can absorb the bit of oxygen your vacuum pump couldn't pull out, therefore making the food last longer..
It would be amazing to have a freeze dryer. The possibilities are endless!Thank you for sharing all your knowledge,we are trying to be more self sufficient and I am trying to learn as much as I can and your videos have been so helpful. Thank you 😊
I started off with an Excalibur food dehydrator. Then over a year ago my husband bought me the medium harvest right freeze dryer. I freeze dry so many different things. I just made some posole soup and I canned it. I took the cabbage, radishes, and cilantro and freeze dried them. That way when we eat the posole, we have the toppings for it. I also freeze dry the rice that you have to have. 😉Now I’m going to freeze dry my limes also for the soup. Thank you so much for sharing about the limes. One hint that I can give as far as freeze drying. Is to empty your trays out onto a piece of parchment paper. I probably do it 18 inches or a little larger. Then I can easily fill my jars or my mylar bags without it getting all over the counters. It makes life a little easier. I also don’t turn my freeze dryer off until I am sure that my food in the freeze dryer is completely done. Sometimes there’s still cold spots that need to be finished off. If it does get turned off, I just put them in my Excalibur food dehydrator to finish it off. Thank you again for your content.😊

Bezt to get help from smart people online Facebook group has several groups for people with HR freeze dryers that arrive broken. It took us 2 months but I think we finally got it going. People should know they need to be prepared to fix their machine before getting to use it. Ours wasn't properly sealed. I have a very smart husband, but it takes a lot of time because you have to test, fix , retest repeat until you find the issue ( and there are many) and cycles can take days. A full time job to get it going. Be prepared.
Thank you for sharing. I just love your videos. I purchased my freeze dryer just today, and I gotta admit that I was a bit apprehensive about the entire process. You have eased my mind tremendously 😊
Oh my goodness!! Never thought to freeze dry avocados. We are a huge avocado family and this would come in very handy!
Never knew you could do it at home, thanks for such an informative video! Now, I just have to get freeze dryer, I think it’ll be my most favorite thing in the kitchen ever!
What a great video! I’m so excited about getting a freeze dryer one day 😊. I love your videos!!!! So informative, entertaining and invaluable. Thank you for all the hard work you go through to help us become more self sustainable!
If you haven’t gotten your freeze dryer yet, I pray & hope you get it soon, enjoy ❤
@@MusicLover-oo8tv thank you 😊. We do too! ♥️
Yes! She does not have the knowledge of that yet…
I would love a freeze dryer.. it makes so much sense to save our foods
..tank you RUclips, every now and then you send me to an amazing channel !
🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯 Whaaaaaaat?!!! Holy crap. THIS, ALONE, is worth every penny the Harvest Right costs. Avacados rot so quick.
Great video. Unless you're dealing with powders don't worry so much about adding too much water. It's only going to soak up what it originally had if youre not leaving it to sit forever and then you can just dump off the excess. It's better than having hard pieces and rubbery pieces in food from being too conservative with the moisture.
Agreed. Gently pour the water over
Amazing staff. That freeze dryer is a must to have😀
So glad you discovered this and shared freeze drying avocados! I have one and I love to use it! Will be watching out for avocados on sale, along with lime.
wHERE DID YOU GET YOUR FREEZE DRYER PLEASE
How fun! Luv your enthusiasm & common sense
I love the idea of freeze drying food. If I can find a neighbor or a local business that has a freeze dryer available for others, that would be amazing.
They are very expensive.
This channel provides a link to the Freeze Dryers. 😉
They're expensive.
They are crazy expensive, and that’s why I would like to connect with someone who has one.
@@marysueper140
Yes these freeze driers are way over priced .
In Texas, where we live on Tex-Mex this is such a great video!! I never imagined you could dry guacamole! I am so excited that I am ready to buy one of those freeze dried machines.
I made a flat surface with pieces of my hardwood cut to length and width and can put ten jars or more and sealed great some maybe not just do again
Just my opinion but . . .
I just learned about your channel about 10 days ago watching you make lard , I subscribed then , what you are doing is awesome young lady. I learn a lot from your videos. Watched quite a few of them.. THANK YOU FRANK FROM MONTANA.......
Awesome! Thank you!
Wonderful demo Carolyn! Thanks for the info. Makes me want a freeze dryer even more!
WOW is all I can say. Amazing. I want a freeze dryer so much. Blessings.
Awesome!!!💚🌱 You sold me on the freeze dryer!
Put cilantro between layers of damp paper towel in a zipper bag... pretty good reconstitution of delicate leaves. This works well with FD bread slices or tortillas - wrapped in damp paper towel in zipper bag overnight in fridge. 👍
Thank you! I am excited to try limes! Could you talk about textures as well as tastes when you freeze dry?
This is so neat.....I want to do some of these...thank you for showing us and telling us about all these things you can Freeze dry......Wow!!!
@@paularobinson2352 that's smart thinking 👍
New amateur avocado grower I never thought this was a viable option...tho my intention is to be able to *harvest* avos nearly yr around.
Harvest right freeze dryer has a layaway plan. It was $250.00 down then you just pay on it until you pay it off. Once you pay it off they ship it to you. Although, I'm pretty sure it is shipping via semi truck because of the size & weight.
I have the same issue. Just the 2 of us. Hubby and I both retired. Can I afford the freeze dryer? Worth it for just 2??
Oh a freeze dryer would be wonderful. Just the thought of preserving avocados is so exciting. I love them and can not eat a whole one, so something like this would be so nice for me. Cilantro is delicious. I would have never thought of freeze drying limes also. Goodness it all looks beautiful.
Lime and avocado is my fave
I also took my limes and zest them and obviously I extracted the juice and I saved the outer portion that was left over, and I intend to use those as parts of marinade which I just put in my freezer
I'd reccommend the oxygen and moisture absorbing pouches.. They're great for long term storage because they help remove whatever is left after you pull the vacuum..
Give me brand. Is there toxic chemicals in it explain
Thank you 😊
Thanks for watching!
Oh my goodness! I love avocados so much, I had no idea they could be freeze dried! I don’t have a freeze dryer yet…but one can hope!
This is exactly the information I was looking for! I eat an avacado every morning. Thank you!
I like that you showed us what to do, how to do it, then tested the finished product for us to see. Thank you!
Finished the “bread run” yesterday and starting the first official drying run today!! Thanks so much for videos!! They made it all seem so easy. :)
Wow this looks like fun todo. Wow I am going to buy all these products. Thank you for sharing.🎉
This looks so cool and a really great way to store food for a crisis. Unfortunately, I don't have 3k to buy a freeze dryer. Lol I would jump on it quick if I did have the resources, this is neat!
Another interesting Vlog from you Julita! Very clearly presented, very nice!
You’re so pretty glowing with your pregnancy. Congratulations! I’ve been off RUclips for awhile. I have that same pattern with my bowls n plates…. The apple pattern lol
Would really like seeing more FD videos. Great info .
QUESTION: To make "powder" from freeze-dried citrus, do you throw them in a blender (I have a coffee grinder that would work great for this) UNPEELED? I would think that would make the powder taste bitter but not sure
I have a dehydrator, but now you have me wanting a freeze dryer. I can tell that I would be happier FD'ing some things. I need to go shopping. Thanks for your info.
nice if you have one, most cannot afford these machines are very expensive, you're very lucky to be able to afford it....
If you cant afford it then she wasn't talking to you or she was talking to you if you plan to someday afford it.
Also Harvest Right has a layaway program. That's how I got mine.
Luck has nothing to do with it.
Can you use other dehydraters?
More like smart rather than lucky! 😆
I may have thrown away the equivalent cost of a dehydrator in rotten avocados over the years. 😐
Great video!
Hey I was excited to see the article about your family in American Essence Magazine. Felt like family in the pages in front of me!
Freeze drying avocados?!?! I need a freeze drier ASAP!!! 🤩🤩
Thanks for the demo and great tips on freeze drying. Very informative video!!
Glad it was helpful!
This is so cool! 😁 I love the freeze drying process ❤ great video, very informative! I can't wait to see some time make this when I get my own freeze dryer
I also make guacamole and freeze dry it. Also. Fingernail polish remover works great for removing sharpie from the lids
I love guacamole! Kinda makes me want a margarita. 😆
Great info!
This so helpful! Now I just need to dig in my couches to come up with $2k to buy a freeze dryer!
