Self taught as a kid. When he listened to music while learning, he thought the bass, melody, and rhythm were being played on one instrument so he learned all the parts together. Amazing
Saw him live, he is like a machine. It was like being hit by a steam train at full speed, incredible. Hardly any talking, just 90 mins of sheer musical power, I was blown away.
Tommy and Phil grew up not far from where I am, it's just a couple of hours drive north of Sydney in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Alas Phil is no more with us, but you might want to watch RUclips videos that features him, he was amazing as well. Two brothers, from a small rural city. What a pair.
@@randomstoragespace He's performances aren't the same. @ManWithoutThePants seen him like 8 times over 13 years. Seen this arrangement 3 times atleast. He will add different runs into all his stuff but this is most certainly prearranged. Can find dozens of RUclips clips of this arrangement too.
I have been watching Tommy and his late brother performing since I was a young teenager when they were playing at a concert in park in Brisbane . They were young kids themselves at the time
Tommy is also a great guy, everyone loves him. If you haven’t done it already, check out Classical Gas, another phenomenal performance from our Aussie legend.❤️
Isn’t it great that this performance by Tommy is from Mason Williams’ channel! To think that the composer of “Classical Gas” is himself a fan of Tommy is a wonderful testament to his amazing talent. I wonder if they’ve ever played it in tandem? All the best from Sydney! 😊
Hey Peaked. Reviewing a view Tommy clips (because of your initiation request) I've watched before and noticed you have watched them all as well.. Isn't he bloody amazing!! Hope your rehab goes well.
@@briangill4000 Haha! Sprung!!!!Seriously though, he could just be the best classical guitarist on the planet right now, even though it’s hard to label him as purely classical. He’s so much more than that! ♥️❤️
Great reaction as always, much love from Italy ❤. Guitar player here, Tommy is one of the BIG BIG, every performance of Guitar Boogie (the song he plays in this video) is completely different, there are some standard parts he plays every time, but most of it is totally improvised and he always create BEAUTIFUL licks, progressions, rhytms etc., he's just a monster. I suggest you to check out "Tommy emmanuel - Guitar Boogie (HD)" , my favourite version of guitar boogie, as long as other really talented guitar players: Mike Dawes, Jon Gomm and Martin Miller !
Tommy is the most skilled guitarist ever. That's not just my opinion. All of the Mt. Rushmore's of guitar have claimed it. Les Paul to Chet Atkins, Roy Clark and many other of the guitar God's have proclaimed Tommy tops.
Have you seen his live 'Classical Gas'? or another gem is ' Initiation' where he amazingly you hear the sound of rain in a thunder storm and the stomping of feet by Indigenous Australians doing a Corrobboree Dance, it's just brilliant. You only just found him? I've known Tommy since 1975 when I first arrived in Oz. He's a great old friend of mine and we have played together many times in Sydney, both on stage and in the studio. I often tell the story of the day we were finishing off a session and Tommy asked if I could give him a lift home as his car was in for repairs. We went out to my car and I started putting my gear in the trunk. Tommy, on the other hand, was taking his acoustic OUT of its case and he climbed into the front seat and played all the way back to his place. Then we went inside and had a cup of coffee and he played the whole time. He just never stops playing. That's how you get as good as Tommy
His ability to play Stevie Ray Vaughan's "STEVIE'S BLUES" on an acoustic guitar, albeit it has pick-ups and a microphone inside it is phenominal. SRV, may he rest in peace, was a phenominal guitarist in his own right. Tommy can play anything in any genre. His brother Phil Emmanuel, may he rest in peace also, was incredible too. Try reacting to some of the stuff the did together, including playing the same guilar together at the same time.
Cool! I've been covering Tommy Emmanuel songs for many years, while being a huge fan of most of the jazzier stuff you're listening to on this channel :)
Not sure if anyone's mentioned, but it might be worth pointing out that what he's playing is not just a generic boogie riff but a specific song: Arthur Smith's "Guitar Boogie," a big and influential hit from 1948. Before Tommy hits the stratosphere, he takes care to deliver hopped-up versions of Smith's first few choruses almost note-for-note - an amazing tribute. Spectacular performance, as always. This part is Stevie's Blues. Stevie Ray Vaughan. Maybe the best Electric Blue Guitarist that ever Lived, and Tommy is getting it on an acoustic guitar, albeit it has pickups and a mich inside. His being named a Certified Guitar Player by Chet Atkins means a lot, but it is like calling the Sun Hot, 😂😂😂
You should - and need to - check out more of Tommy. He is one of the best! And that's not what only I am saying, but ... Tommy is a CGP (aka. Certified Guitar Player). This title (!) only got 4 persons ever!!! The CPG titel received John Knowles, Jerry Reed, Steve Warriner and Tommy Emmanuel! That title was claimend by the great Chet Atkins and Todd Rundgren for the best guitar players in the world. So it's official that Tommy is one of the very best guitar players on earth! So acutally you can't go wrong with him! And he is a nice and funny guy, too. Very down to earth! ♥
You mean, "me and my pet" salt water crocodile... Yep, a real nice bit of guitar wonderment, from a guy who can't sight read music! Thanks for posting. Cheers from Sydney.
I know Tommy and Phil Emanuel personally, even though Phil has passed now. I saw these guys back in the 70s and 80s when they were a duo. I have to laugh when people say Van Halen etc and call him the greatest guitarist ever. I asked Phil once what do you think of Eddie and Stevie Via etc and he laughed and said who are they?
Thanks for turning us on to Tommy Emmanuel. But 12 bar blues going through every note? Where did you get that from? 12 bar blues is named that because it's 12 bars bro.
