  • In this video I finish the timing belt, tensioner, and springs replacement. Everything went well and the bike started right up without any leaks. After the coolant was filled, I started the bike to test run it. I finished reassembly of the plastics and parts after I stopped this video since I showed everything in Part 1, assembly is in reverse of what I removed in the first video. I rode the bike around and topped off the coolant after it cooled down and all is well. Please consider subscribing, thanks for watching!

      You’re welcome Blake, congratulations on the 97, the GL1500 is a great bike, she requires some maintenance though. Unfortunately mine needed a lot done to get caught up, it’s almost perfect now. Good luck with yours, the timing belt job really isn’t hard at all if you’ve done timing belt on a car then it’ll be a breeze

    Hi good morning thank you for the videos I like to ask you why you don't use original parts the belt the oil filter..... Like my experience you don't need to take out the water cold follow the work shop manual ..... Why you change the tensioner thank you

    • @herbiesgarage681
      @herbiesgarage681  Год назад +4

      Hello and good morning, Gates are the original manufacturers of the Honda belt, Honda just rebrands them and raises the cost of the belt. Honestly I don’t remember what oil filter that I put in but I always use a quality oil filter, not always a Honda filter, but other filters have excellent quality and filter the oil just as good as the Honda filter. As far as the tensioner pulley and springs, my thoughts are that I am only going to do this job once so why not do it right and replace parts that do wear out over time. This timing belt job will be good for several years and many miles. I always do the same on my automobiles, I replace with all new parts as well. Thanks for the comments and for watching!

      Yes, did replace my belts without removing the coolant and hoses. There is enough room to get to all the bolts with the coolant hoses in place. I used Gates too. Is a very good brand both for motorcycle and cars belts.

    Hi, liked the video. I have to tackle this soon on my 1989 GL 1500. What kind of grease did you use on the gaskets?

    • @herbiesgarage681
      @herbiesgarage681  Год назад

      Hello Habibee, the grease that I used is just dielectric grease, it's a good and sticky grease and holds the gasket in place so you can put the cover on and not worry about it falling off. Doing the whole timing belt job isn't a bad job, you just have to allot some time to do it so as not to rush. Once done it will last for a long long time. Thank You for the compliment!

    great video. wasn't sure what you use to measure the tension on the belt . also I like to compare the price where you purchased the parts
    . I went to the dealership web site, im at $500 , for everything, 2 belts , 2 tension , 2 timing pulse indicator, gasket ,

    • @herbiesgarage681
      @herbiesgarage681  5 месяцев назад +1

      Thank you, I just used a fish weighing scale to measure the tension. I could only use it on one side but after I felt the proper tension is was pretty easy to replicate it. I bought my Honda parts from Carolinacycle.com and the Gates belts from rockauto.com

    Also have a question l will be looking at a goldwing this week what should l look for it's a 89 model with 82k miles it's a import bike do you have any tips?

    • @herbiesgarage681
      @herbiesgarage681  8 месяцев назад

      The GL 1500 is a very reliable bike but one problem I find is that when you get into older models a lot of times they are not serviced like they should be. People who don't work on their own bikes find it difficult to find a qualified mechanic to work on their bikes and the result is a bike that needs a lot of care. Unless of course you find someone like me who likes to work on their own bikes and keep it up to top condition. My bike needed, steering bearings lubed, coolant change, carbs cleaned, timing belt changed, new tires, new wheel bearings etc etc, you get the idea. But if you're not afraid of diving in then you really can't go wrong with these bikes especially because you can find them so cheap. Just be sure and add about $1500 more for parts to bring it back to excellent condition. Hope this helps

      @@SGDB905 I have heard of the 4th gear problem but I honestly don’t know if it’s a widespread problem or just people abusing the bike. Sounds like you should be good in Holland, and you’re familiar enough with bikes that you should be fine. Good luck with it, I hope it works out well for you.
