I think pochita is the extinction devil. It’d easily fit into primal fears and the chainsaws fit with deforestation which has gotta be a leading cause of species going extinct. And it’d explain why he can erase things from existence.

I think pochita is the fear devil. The fear of being afraid. So while other devils gain strenght from the fear others have for the concept they represent, Pochita’s strength comes from fears of devils and what devils fear. The only thing that devils fear is to stop being feared so thats why pochita has the power to remove other devils from existence. In a world where being afraid of something can spawn a dangerous monster, its also probably common for people to be afraid of being afraid

I think so as well. Extinctions is the primal fear of ceasing to exist. Not of dying, but of ceasing to be alltogether, of having any trace of you and your existence erased. Sound familiar? It's exactly what happens to the Devils Pochita eats. You could say there is a notable overlap with the Death Devil, however we have already seen that the Katana Devil and the Longsword Devil are separate entities despite being both Swords; so having Death and Extinction being different devils is not improbable. Plus we have seen that primal fear devils can have less direct names (well, we have seen that with the only primal fear devil we have seen): if Darkness Devil actually represents the fear of Mutilation (fear of the dark is really fear of what lurks in the dark, because what hides in there can possibly hurt (mutilate) you), then Pochita with his chainsaws could very possibly represent Extinction in some way.

I just posted a comment but here are two possibilities
Death Devil- all things fear death, and a Dead Devil is forgotten. Devils and Humans would fear Death for two different reasons, both making Pochita stronger.
Love- Philophobia is the literal Fear of Love (falling in love or being loved)
This is a natural fear humans have, but something the Devils would fear more.
Being Loved would reduce the amount of fear towards a particular aspect.
The Gun Devil would be much weaker if the general populace started to Love guns rather than be afraid of them.
How strong would the Darkness Devil be if the would loved the dark?
If Fear powers up a Devil, Love would weaken it. Absolute Love would devour the fear itself and therefore remove the fear completely; removing and making people forget what they were supposed to be afraid of.

It's most likely the "forgotten devil" theory for 3 reasons.
    1. It explains pochita's erasure power.
    2. It makes sense that everyone would think the forgotten devil is a different devil, since they'd necessarily forget he exists.
    3. Pochita and Denji draw power from the fear of both humans and devils. Asa even guesses the war devil's one fear is being forgotten, which is the only way a devil can permanently be killed. This is a universal fear, not just a primordial one unique to humans, which would explain why pochita is so strong he could fight the 4 horsemen, including death.

    SPOILER WARNING FOR ANIME ONLIES
Personally, I really like the idea that Pochita embodies the fear of being forgotten. It makes sense with the lore we currently have, and there’s even some strong evidence for this in CSM Part 2.
In Chapter 104, Yoru (the War Devil) throws a tantrum after being saved previously by Chainsaw Man. During this, she explains to Asa that because Chainsaw Man ate from her body, her power is greatly weakened. Not only that, but all wars after WW1 were wiped from history, meaning that contemporary humanity only knows about wars from history books, movies, video games, etc. There are no ongoing wars between nations to make humans scared. All they see are caricatures of what they think wars would be like.
This is compounded by our knowledge that the Nuke Devil was eaten whole by Chainsaw Man, thus removing it entirely from the world. Nukes that ended WW2, fuelled the arms race and Cold War, were used as last resorts/deterrents for wars and invasions; they were all erased from the world because of Chainsaw Man. This action made humanity forget the fear and horrors that this object brought… and the wars it caused.
Yoru’s goal is to get Chainsaw Man to throw up the Nuke Devil. While it’s not explicitly stated, it can be implied that this is so the Nuke Devil can strike fear into humanity yet again. This would strengthen both the Nuke Devil and War Devil because of how interlinked the two are (just look at the real world and the fear surrounding nuclear warfare). Furthermore, it can be implied by Yoru’s statement, “…and as the world forgot war’s terrors, I grew even weaker[.] At this rate… everyone will forget me… and Chainsaw Man is to blame” that she is going through these lengths because she’s scared of being forgotten… of dying the only way that a devil can truly die.
If Pochita really is the fear of being forgotten, then this would tie directly into Yoru’s goals of Part 2. Why else would a Horsemen Devil fear Chainsaw Man? To me, it would make sense that Yoru’s fear of being forgotten, as shown in her tantrum, implies the possible true nature of Pochita’s powers as Chainsaw Man. It’s either that, or possibly her dream to have people remember her fondly… a paradoxical dream, sure, but so was Makima’s dream of an equal relationship (goes against her Control Devil powers) and Pochita’s dream of being hugged (the boy had chainsaws for arms and obliterated people by accident).
Sorry for the lengthy comment, and I hope this makes sense to read through!
TL;DR: Part 2 of CSM holds evidence to the “fear of being forgotten theory” through Yoru’s character and goals.

The reason he has a chainsaw is because of the "If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?" philosophical question. A chainsaw is literally one of the loudest equipments I can think of, but if it's somehow cutting off a tree and no-one is around, does it makes a sound?

I heard this theory somewhere on reddit which I really liked. The theory that the "Chainsaw Man" was not actually a devil at first, but rather was once a human devil hunter. The fact that the Chainsaw Man devil seems to be the strongest of them all despite the fear of chainsaws not being as powerful as other fears, makes me think that there was a human devil hunter who was so strong and skilled with a chainsaw that they became a legend, and the fear of them from devils manifested into a devil itself. It would also makes sense that this devil would have abilities tailored to the human devil hunter's personality and goals, since the fear itself isn't a concept, group, event, weapon, disease, or other, but rather a person. This devil hunter may have been like Eren Yeager, where the intense determination to wipe out devils was so tied to his personality, that the devil that was tailored to him gained to ability to erase devils from existence.
Edit: Actually, it could just be the fear of Devil Hunters itself
Edit 2: Wait, but that wouldn't explain the chainsaws-
EDIT 3: Oh... my... god. I just thought of something. IT'S A FUCKING PERPETUAL MOTION MACHINE!!!
Imagine this scenario: Eren Yeager like mofo shows up with a chainsaw cause devils killed his family or whatever. THEN, he goes on a devil hunting massacre and he gains a little bit of a name for himself, so much so that a weak devil was spawned in his image. It really doesn't matter if the original devil hunter gets killed now as long as the rumor that he might still be around lingers for a bit. Now, the weak devil that was spawned in his image should have the same aspirations and qualities that he had. AND NOW THIS NEW WEAK DEVIL GOES ON A DEVIL HUNTING KILLING SPREE. THE RUMOR OF A DEVIL MASSACRING OTHER DEVILS STARTS A PERPUTUAL LOOP, SO THAT AS THE WEAKER CHAINSAW DEVIL GOES AROUND KILLING MORE DEVILS, HE ONLY GETS STRONGER, IT'S LITERALLY A MANIFESTATION OF THE FEAR OF ITSELF!!!
A long-lasting rumor of even a weak devil killing other devils could make a perpetual cycle that would only make the devil stronger as it kills more devils and feeds the rumors. This makes the Chainsaw Man devil literally a manifestation of the fear of itself, and the only thing keeping it from being erased from existence is to feed the legends and rumors, and continue on his massacre. He literally cannot stop killing other devils, because if he were- his legacy would be forgotten and he would be erased.
Tldr: The Chainsaw Man devil is literally willing himself into existence, and the perpetual slaughtering of devils is the only thing stopping his own erasure. It is the manifestation of the fear of itself.

Well there's a bit of hole with that theory: Quanxi.
Quanxi is referred to as 'The First Devil Hunter', but there's a few ways to interpret that statement. The obvious is that she's the oldest living and still active Devil Hunter, even moreso than Kishibe. Another is that she's quite literally the first Devil Hunter in recorded history, which would fit since she's seemingly ageless and immortal, but another way to read it that goes hand-in-hand with that statement is that she's the First _Devil_ Hunter, as in the first Devil Hunter to become a Hybrid and therefore a Devil.

Doesn't make sense to me. Why would humans fear Quanxi or any other devil hunter? I guess the devils feared Quanxi but did she hunt with a chainsaw? Nope. If she did, then yeah, it would be a solid theory.

This theory is just too convoluted and has too many holes IMHO.

So she might be VERY old because she was presumably a hybrid even before she met Kishibe, still having the eyepatch at that time, and she had not visibly aged since then.
As for the concept of Devils and Devil Hunters, bear in mind that the power of a Devil is directly proportional to the amount of people who are afraid of the thing it represents, so it's entirely possible that Devils have only been around for a few millennia, or even only a few centuries, as there simply wouldn't have been enough people on Earth to allow a Devil to manifest with any real power outside of the Primal Fears, who have never known death and therefore never left Hell. It's also noted that the modern upswing in Devil activity is attributed to the Gun Devil's rampage, which in and of itself was fueled by gun violence stemming from the proliferation of firearms among the general public to help deal with a rise in Devil activity.
So no matter how you slice it, Devils and Devil Hunters are a relatively new phenomenon in the eyes of the public, even if there are isolated incidents going back thousands of years. Hell, devil-human hybrids like Denji are still considered mythical, despite there being almost a dozen of them known to exist.

If you google "why were chainsaws invented" you'll find that they were originally used to assist in childbirth, but the only reason to need a chainsaw was if there were complications during the birth. So, if people began to associate chainsaws with complications during birth, I believe Pochita has the ability to complicate the rebirth of Devils and prevents them from reincarnating. While this power would not make humans any more afraid of the Chainsaw Devil, being the only thing that can prevent a Devil's reincarnation would make him the #1 fear amongst Devils.

Erasure as a concept is terrifying and freeing simultaneously. It is more than death, it is a complete reunion with everything. We fear this concept more than nearly everything else, material or not. Pochita uses that little chainsaw smile to make us forget about our fears to strike our paths with the knowledge that our fears, while warranted, can always be eaten by a cute little dog.
If he's the predator devil, I say that the erasure is tied to his alpha status. He doesn't need to remember what he ate, so why does anyone else?
Altogether, the chainsaws connect to both with the shredded pieces of his victims representing the meal to be consumed and forgotten.

Because I can remember when Denji was fighting Aki as the Gun Fiend, the victims surrounding him didn’t blame him for the mass destruction or deaths. But instead, help him. They saw within the Chainsaw Man is a chain of suffering that they want to cut away. A kind of pain you could say.

Fear of being gone before you can do something you've yearned for, fear of missing out, fear of not reaching your potential or trying something, fear of missing your chance - fear of time running out, fear of never being truly happy.
BUTTTT also there's something about fear of being the only one left, what does your own existence mean without an audience? Denji was a kid with nothing that was content to just get by, but he also had a high consumption drive that he could only fantasize about fulfilling. It could have been cathartic for Pochita to struggle with little to live off of except for friendship and this kids Hope's for the future. We dont really get to see what Denji was like before him and Pochita fused, but it's very obvious that his desire to satisfy his needs, or consume things, has definitely become more prominent and often lead him to going fully mad to get what he wants. As well as the things he wants hes willing to fight for to get no matter how hard the fight is.

I have a feeling that Pochita and Chainsaw Mans power is rooted in the primal fear and concept of severe Mutilation as a whole, and chainsaws happen to be one of the most modernistic, effective and brutal object to use to do that to someone/something. So many things in our world, from the beginning of time and onwards, have been able to Mutilate people and for a long time the chances of surviving wounds/afflictions from severe Mutilation for a person were very low (until the age of modern medicine) AND considering every weapon has a high probability of mutilating the body in some regard, not only would the sphere of fear related strengths given to every Weapons Devil would help amplify the power of a Mutilation Devil, making it stronger than each Weapon Devil individually, but alltogether. Even Idea based Devils like War, Control, Famine/Hunger and Death are all in the realm of Mutilation of the body and mind in most regards.
Wars: Acts of War have mutilated the minds and bodies of countless individuals.
Control: Acts of severe Control have lead to the mutilation of peoples minds and have lead to self acts of mutilation
Famine/Hunger: Famine/Hunger has ravaged countless lands and civilizations, leaving the lands and peoples minds, bodies and entire populations mutilated for generations.
Death: Well... if your body is mutilated in extreme manners... you're probably going to die from the inflicted wounds.
Even ideas of 'Being Eaten' would fall into a greater realm of being Mutilated, because the fear of 'Being Eaten' is present, but the idea that your body is being ripped apart, torn limb from limb, being mutilated, while all you can do is watch as the Devil consumes your body bit-by-bit would be more presentingly terrifying than just being devoured as a whole. Even the way Chainsaw man rips apart his enemies and dismembers their bodys and by consuming them, would mutilate their immortality. Hell, the word mutilate literally means "to cut off or permanently destroy a limb or essential part of" and I think the Devils would consider their Immortality an Essential Part of themselves.
Hell, even the series first introduced us to Denji, who has Mutilated his body, having his eye and kidneys sold to pay off his fathers debt

2 things: spoilers like the man said!
Firstly, I actually quite like the idea of pochita Consumption or Destruction devil because it doesn’t have be literal consumption either, considering one of the major themes in the manga and show is how having dark dreams like controlling everything or killing the gun devil can be just as destructive. Likewise it goes back to the original roots (lol) of the chainsaw with forests being consumed by industry, and lumberjacks being consumed by their company during dangerous work. The second thing being relevant to the devil hunter work being a hard job that slowly takes it’s toll on the hunters “consuming” them. I’m trying to think of a way it ties into Pochita’s worries about how he mostly just wants hugs, but is too strong, but I’m not quite there, maybe he is afraid of losing control and consuming those he likes by accident, which is also why he purposely weakens himself? Just a thought, nothing concrete there as if yet.
Secondly, more evidence for “he isn’t what he seems” is that Pochita is very rarely referred to AS the chainsaw devil, especially by other devils (iirc a few civilians refer to denji/Pochita as some sort of Chainsaw Devil). To most he is known as Chainsaw man, to his admirers he is sometimes Lord Chainsaw, and to those who don’t like him they usually just call him “chainsaw”. This is particularly unusual because other devils tend to say it like “bring me the heart of Chainsaw”, and I don’t recall Makima, his biggest fan, calling him The chainsaw Devil ONCE, but maybe I just need to reread the manga lol.

That isn't the reason. In the control devil arc makima makes the "chainsaw man" a hero in the eyes of the public and that definitely weakened pochita in that fight.
Something else makima says, is that devils also contribute to this "fear meter", hence why pochita is strong. It's not that humans fear it. Devils do...
The question why is actually something to do with fujimoto's inspiration for the manga.
When chainsaws were invented they served the purpose to "help" in complicated births. The first thing children would hear is the sound of a chainsaw.
Angel also tells aki that when devils die in hell and are rebirth in earth they all remember the sound of the chainsaw Rev.
I guess that after enough cycles of rebirth happened devils started unconsciously fearing it.

This also explains why the longing to do things that feel good, hugs, kisses, sex, touching. You dont want to feel pain, you want to feel good. As for the whole rebirth cycle being broken, we fear pain at the moment of birth, many things cause pain, physical and emotional. The only way to stop the fear of ever experiencing pain is to never be born. This is higher then the darkness devil, as we learn to fear the dark when bad things happen to use in the dark, but we spend 9 months in the womb where it is nothing but darkness, but the sensation of pain is still very much there in the developmental process, if we're aware of it or not. Pochita talks about dreams a lot in the same way the Future Devil talks about the Future. In huge scenes including when Denji first gets revived and when Pochita talks about Makima's motivation, Pochita only cares about Denji's and Makima's dreams. The idea that a chainsaw devil eating you erases the concept of the thing it eats makes no real sense. If a chainsaw tore up a house the concept of houses would still exist... but if a "Dream" Devil ate someone and hypothetically turned the concept of them into a dream, then that would be a more plausible reason to say they were erased from reality. Even Makima who is the Control Devil mentions she only vaguely remembers the things CSM eats... and that vague memory seems a lot like the description of a "dream" to me.

If Pochita were the Dream Devil, I doubt Pochita would at least be a Primal Fear, the name Dream Devil wouldn't strike much fear into the general population or even make other Devils fear him. Because these other Devils have their own dreams/goals they want to achieve. (E.g. The Bat Devil and Leach Devil in the Anime).
I also can't see the correlation between Pochita's manifestation of Chainsaws with the concepts of Dreams. Unlike how the Darkness Devil can summon weapons that relate to being ambushed from the dark (as mentioned in the video).

@wow.1424 I literally don't fear nightmares, though. In my dreams, the monsters are usually afraid of me. You say you can't not fear nightmares because then they aren't nightmares, but that's exactly *why* I'm not afraid of them. For me personally, there's literally no such thing. I'm only afraid of things I'm pretty sure can really happen to me, so the only things I fear about sleeping are the things that can happen in the real world while I'm defenseless and unaware. I'm sometimes afraid of falling asleep, but it's not because of what dreams I might have. Some people genuinely never have nightmares, believe it or not. A cursory google search says an estimated 50-85% of people have nightmares. That means 15-50% of people don't. That's a lot of people even on the low end, about 1.2 billion if it holds globally. (Granted never having a single nightmare is probably a lot more rare though.)
I'm not discounting the nightmare devil idea, I'm just saying the fear of nightmares isn't as universal as you might think and it certainly isn't automatic. There are a few other fears that are probably more universal. Fear of the unknown for instance. Existential dread. The fear of pain. Even the fear of *being* afraid.

The unknown devil. Even wild animals fear the unknown so that would explain why he’s so powerful as well as why he can erase devils thus making them “unknown”

Pochita is the Pochita Devil, and represents the fear of Pochita.

Oblivion. The fear of death sometimes includes afterlife. The fear of the void. Nothingness.

The consumption devil theory makes sense. He also showed up in the form of a dog so that adds to it for me

What if pochita isn't the forgetting devil, but the erasure/entropy devil?
It would make similar sense in that he literally erases the concept and devil from existence, and one massive fear for both humans and possibly immortal beings like devil's is the idea of straight up ceasing to exist, to literally become nothing (less scary if you believe in an afterlife of any kind, but still an absolutely terrifying thought)

Pochita could be a chain devil because chains sometimes symbolize things like slavery and people would really be scared of losing their freedom. there are some things that back it up, and the one of them being how Denji uses his chains as whips as how slave masters will whip their slaves. Another thing is that when people think of chains, they probably think of someone without freedom. Also, chains are associated with chainsaws, sometimes.

I think that Pochita is the "cutting" devil. He manifests chainsaws to cut others, and he can cut off other devils from reality by isolating them in his stomach. Not just that, but cutting directly results in pain, which is something both humans and devils can have a primal fear towards.

Might sound weird but my theory is that pochita is the unknown* devil and thus devouring devil's makes them become a part of him/nutrients and thus makes them join the unknown
*That from which all fear originates is the unknown

I think Pochita is strong because a Devil's power comes from the fear of devil's and people. And canonically Pochita is the most feared Devil by the Devil's

I do agree with the idea of Pochita being the consumption devil, but as more of a broader concept, like environmental consumption, thus the saws

My thought is Pochita is the devil of pain. It’s primal, all humans fear pain. It also explains the chainsaws as those things hurt. Also in the encounter with the infinity demon he makes him feel enough pain to commit suicide

Honestly, the reason I think Chainsaw Devil is SO strong is because of the fear it instilled in Devils. I think it’s possible that Pochita’s power level started at what you would expect but, as it began killing more and more devils, the devils began to fear it causing it to gain more and more power against them. The chainsaw devil is referenced as “The Devil that Devils fear most” so it would make the most sense to me.

I think Pochita being the consumption devil makes mad sense
That being said, given enough thought, this makes you realize pochita is broken af😂
