The brutality of the SWAT team in "The Subject" is due to the heightened tensions in Indonesia at that time. In the early 90s, signs of political upheaval began, and in 1994 the president introduced Kodiklat, a system to oversee the military and police, to manipulate and take over the remains of what he could control in the armed forces. eventually in 1998 riots broke out following assassinations and with the toppling of the government the current era of reformation begins. Just thought a little detail could go a long way in thinking about the actions of the sergeant and Jono
@@DeadMeat You are totally welcome! Please cover more Indonesian horror films, they are untouched gems! Impetigore and Pengabdi Setan (both originals in 1980 and remake in 2017) are some of the best films I'd argue in all of Indonesian cinema
The Subject is probably my favorite section from a thematic perspective. I got really into horror after I witnessed the murder of a close family member and developed PTSD, because horror was the only place my fears felt acknowledged-everyone else was too uncomfortable and just wanted to ignore it. In The Subject, an innocent and loved young woman goes through something absolutely horrific. But by some miracle, rescuers arrive to help. Except she’s changed so much that they no longer consider her able to be rescued. How could we show her to her parents? To me, this is very similar to what trauma can feel like. After you’ve gone through something so horrible, you change. A lot of trauma survivors feel unloveable, like they’re too broken, like their old self died and everyone else is trying to save someone that doesn’t exist. You’re looking for the me who existed a year ago-they don’t exist anymore. They died, it’s just me. The Subject is a direct manifestation of that. Her being kidnapped literally changed her, literally made her unrecognizable. And because of that, they no longer want to save her. She’s disgusting now, inhuman, too horrific and broken to let live. That’s a deep fear i’ve had for a long time, and seeing it on screen was amazing. And then she gets to kill everyone and it’s fucking AWESOME. 10/10. Edit: I wrote this comment before 21:22 when the director said he wasn’t going for anything deep and profound, and that’s one of my favorite things about horror (and writing and art in general). You can write something that to you is just a straight forward massacre, and someone else sees their real-life fears reflected in it. And hell, sometimes you can make a better metaphor for trauma and grief then a lot of “elevated horror” (not that all elevated horror is bad, but sometimes when you try too hard to get a theme across it turns out worse and less authentic to a story that focuses on being good before being deep)
@@neonradius I'm sorry that you went through such a traumatic experience. I hope you're doing alright afterwards. Your mental health is important. And I agree, The Subject does look like the best one in this movie.

@@divinex9671 It's Weskin' time!
I'm definitely watching.
Very curious how they're going to count kills, especially RE where some depend on player decisions.
Not to mention background corpses and a particularly itchy creature.
I can already tell RE2 and 3 are gonna be pain to do
Oh and next week we get one of my favorite horror movie quotes ever
"That what is eternal cannot die. But if it's any consolation, that hurt like hell!"
And yes that line in dbza, and cells menace as a whole was a reference to wishmaster. Confiremed by rhe va
Zoran, I hope the naysayers aren't getting you down. You're an awesome dude, super clever, and fun to watch and listen to. I can't wait to see more of you!
🥰
I’m so raatmaing excited for the new raatma count when I get raatma from raatma. HAIL RAATMA
Hail Raatma
Hail Raatma.
🙌Hail Raatma🙌
Hail Raatma 🥳
Hail Raatma.

The amount of times I’ve seen this scene in scary video compilations always had me questioning where it was from, and this has finally answered my question. Thank god.
The militia part reminds me of every rimworld playthrough I’ve done with the Anomaly dlc, you go from having a stable community to being overwhelmed by monsters just like these ones
3:37 This was so funny for no reason 😂
Happy new year lol but old
28:40, thought he said "this man heard wu-tang clans call to action" 😂
Wu tang clan ain't nothing to fuck with.
"Cash Rules Everything Around Me"
Chelsea’s right, Terror is a step above everything else in the series. Unique concept, sharp script, strong performances. Has enough character to be developed into something more.
32:47 bro Chelsea 😭😭 I love her
I appreciate that even though James isn't a big sports fan, he still references his loyalty to Michigan/hatred of Ohio State. Haha
I've been gone so long from the channel I was shocked to see it in my feed. Feels good to be back! Also, I'm glad James has some new faces assisting in the video.
This is my favorite of the series! All Hail Raatma!
35:10 the moment Josh pointed at himself, my phone started to load
21:10 fun fact! Timo Tjahjanto also made “L is for Libido”, which is, in my opinion, the most disturbing entry in the “ABC’s of Death” anthology film. Dude’s got skills!
This channel is the best lmao I’m glad they revamped this series, it needed it and it was beyond well done.
Surely the veggie chop ad was a direct reference to that crazy slapchop commercial which actually feels very in place for VHS
The thing I always notice in that commercial bit is how the chopped items grow messier and more... Gross as it goes on. I always feel like it ended five seconds away from seeing human flesh get pulled into it. So in a way, it's a neat exercise in suspense and dread.
I’m not well versed in the world of horror kills and gore effects, but the face-ripping at 31:22 kicks SO MUCH ASS. It just looks flawless, no notes
The Subject is my favourite horror movie of all time. What happens to the girl and other subjects is my biggest (irrational) fear, and the segment perfectly depicts some of my nightmares. I have yet to see another horror movie that scares me like The Subject does
I always get excited for the count when I hear the words “Practical effects”. Also excited for the video game kill counts!
29:10 I love this part, Chelsea’s “hell yeah” gets me every time 😭
Just watched V/H/S/BEYOND on Shudder. You guys are going to have fun with that one!
Sweeeeeet didn't realize it was on there yet!
Is it good or is it a V/H/S Viral? xdd
@@grave_stne0 god damn it……but no joke. IMO, it might be better than V/H/S/2.
How are the kills? Any golden chainsaw nominations
@@grantpowell4135 geez ya’ll want my thoughts on this. I will say this about one kill that might not win golden chainsaw, but is pretty gory in its own right.
One dude gets Victor Crowley and Leatherface to death. How do? Watch the movie.
I don’t even like the vhs series that much but I’ve really been enjoying their kill counts. Thank you James, Chelsea and Zoran much appreciated laughs.
Can’t wait to watch this before I go to bed! :D
Edit: with headphones on, in the dark. :D

I’M SO EXCITED ABOUT THIS
11:11 James and Chelsea Has Enough With Zoran's Stupid Puns ans Fake Ads
The Ohio mention in front of the Michiganders was the last straw 😭😭😂
Both are University of Michigan alumni, so it's f_ck Ohio. 〽️
They are both University of Michigan Alumni , so it's f〽️ck Ohio
James and Chelsea are both University of Michigan Alumni 〽️.
@@bee-om2ryFor the last VHS video they should have a sketch where James and Chelsea are stuck in Columbus and being forced to eat Skyline Chili.
I'm with Chelsea Terror is my favorite segment. Terror hits close to home since I grew up in the shadow of the OKC Bombing we even knew someone who lost family that day
