i like how in the manga aki's name isnt even highlighted or anything. its easy to miss but its in with the massive list of names
Kinda sad really. We can care about someone dying but the moment it happens to thousands of others the names blend and the person you cared for is just a number, a statistic.

Cause it’s true, you feel much more sadness for individual deaths than massive group deaths because those lists of names just become an amorphous blob of “people”. We cant truly comprehend the fact that each name is a whole lived life with families, children, friends, partners etc.

Was now the person he's trying to kill.
He sacrificed so much of his lifespan just in the end to become the gun devil instead.

I have a feeling that Mappa might not adapt this scene nearly as haunting as how this video does it.
idk how they will put all the names in the anime tbh. the only thing I can think of is there will be a scene that shows a memorial of all the victims with the names post-attack
@@dwivaraditya8079 I think they could do it similarly to the manga with the names filling up the screen like a news report while the attacks are happening, I think it would be just as effective in calling to mind imagery of mass shootings, since we mostly see those reports on TV anyway

I love how the Gun Devil is almost... Passive. The randomness of its targets, the sheer specificity that has almost no logical meaning to it, it's a being that kills indiscriminately just by being present. It destroys everything in its wake without actively trying to destroy anything.
It just IS and it's DESTRUCTIVE.
Like a natural disaster. It’s unavoidable, unstoppable. Hell, you can’t even know when it will happen.

This video is flat out S C A R Y. The choice of music, the cuts, the font against a simple black background, paired with how coldly scientific the event is described in the manga, like written on a military report, is just bone chilling. I think this scene will actually be worse when animated. This video absolutely elevated the manga in my opinion and made that chapter even scarier.
Edit: the lyrical singing in the song is also so haunting it gives me goosebumps.
I mean this chapter showed that the only real way to stop the Gun Devil is to face it off against something even MORE monstrous and terrifying, Makima. (And keep in mind this was only 20% of the Gun Devil's true strength here)
Makima conversation was like: "Gun devil? Its already been defeated. Every countries have certain percentage of its body. Why keeping the remains of it you asked? _...Do you remember a devil would get stronger when the fear factor itself is increased? Yeah humanity just use it as controlled shared weapon of mass destruction. Pretty neat isnt it? Fear the wielder not the weapon itself_

I always thought the gun devil fight would be a massive monster battle where all the characters show up in a climactic fight to stop the gun devil from rampaging around Tokyo or something, but god the gun fiend fight and the emotions behind that fight as well as showing Makima's power was just incredible and blew my expectations out of the water

The numbers 4, 7 and 10 ( the numbers of these months in the calendary ) are, in Japanese, Shi, nana, and juu. Shina nai, means don't/won't die, depending on the context. Ju, means gun. So believe the message here is that those who were born in April, July and October "won't die by gun".

The fact that it gives detail description on its ability rather than just "shoot everyone within 1km" makes it more unsettling. Like it gives you hope that you may live but as you read on the details you see there is no escape

When the names of the victims are shown, I gasped. The last names changing slower than given names means that there were whole families wiped out. Which by itself is obvious, but realizing that every one of these people had a family and life (which was gone, just in single while) through that makes it horrifying. Such a damn great job, this video.

I hope that this part will be the ending of an episode and instead of the credits, it will be black screen with the names of Gun Devil victims showing up instead.

i read the description of the 2nd ability of the gun devil and i think i would be dead considering i was born in the month of may
1997 was the year of a major school shooting in Kentucky. It wasn't the first school shooting in the states, but it was notable because the perpetrator killed three and injured five students while they were in a prayer circle. I think (based on old information I'd read years ago that I can't find now), this was one of the "inspirations" for the Columbine shooting a couple of years later which became more popularly documented as a "major school shooting" when Americans talk about it. When the shooter of the 1997 Kentucky attack surrendered and dropped his weapons, he said "Kill me, please. I can't believe I did that."
The chosen date of September 12th obviously brings to mind September 11th, which makes sense with one of the deep-set themes of CSM being the global "War on Terrorism" that expanded beyond the realm of American politics and experiences. It makes sense too with the positioning of Makima as Japan's "answer" to that violence.
All of this is crazy impressive and more evidence of how much thought went into this series about a dude who's head turns into a chainsaw. I love it lol.
Its also funny how the CONTROL devil beats the gun, after all you or someone else controls the gun itself, as a gun is a tool to be used
Fujimoto is a japanese citizen, I doubt he's even aware of a specific American 1997 school shooting. Is he aware of school shootings in Ameria in General? Of course he does. But he didn't choose 1997 for the reason you're suggesting.

I used to have a teacher who'd say the only question you really need when weighing the value of different literary analysis is "Does this add anything to the understanding of the text?" if the answer is "no", this means more than the direct intention of the author. I think you're also downplaying the importance of this subject to Fujimoto. Its a deliberate move on his part to have the US president barter with the life expectancy of the American population for the "aid" of the Gun Devil. My friend and I actually looked this up and did the math after reading that panel - mass shooting violence in the united states reduces the average American life expectancy by almost exactly 100 days. Weird and awful little factoid! And even if that doesn't directly line up with the "one year" that is put into the deal, that adds context for how USAmericans will read this scene and what they bring to it.

I think it is reasonable to assume he did his research on shooting events in America, seeing as the USA use the gun devil to attack makima here.
@@mush6681 biblically, Control devil is the 4th/3rd strongest devil because it is one of the four horsemen of Apocalypse. Control, Famine, War and Death. And Gun is not even a Primal Fear so it makes 100% sense.
Based purely off of how the anime has gone so far.... I imagine they're going to make this scene 10x more terrifying than the manga.... and it's already terrifying. Hopefully they do as good as of a job as you did with this video

The fact that it does not kill all the people within range makes it all the more cruel. If they are all gone, there will be no one left to transmit the fear. As the fear of the survivors swells, the gun devil will be more reinforced.

My favorite scene in the manga, the sheer terror that the gun devil causes and knowing it isnt anywhere near the strongest devil is simply terrifying, and there was also the Aki incident...
That bit made no sense to me, the gun devil was contracted to kill Makima, why was he going after Chainsaw in Aki’s body? Why did all the devils not realise that Chainsaw didn’t remember who he was & focus on Makima?

Even Kaato was able to attack the user simply because she removed her thoughts of pursuing him 😂 the Gun Devil essentially functions like Sukuna’s domain expansion. It kills both indiscriminately and discriminately. That’s why it was able to kill 1.2 million people in 5 minutes across the world. That’s a testament to his speed, too.
Let’s not even mention that the Gun Devil is immortal or that he was at 20% the last time we saw him AND STILL messed shit up just from moving. Not attacking, just moving.

I've watched this so many times. This is probably the best motion manga I've seen on youtube. Everything about it feels intentional, from the music to the speed of the panels flying in. Perfect encapsulation of the vibe I got when I read this chapter for the first time. Good f*ing job dude, you created a masterpiece.
Seeing Aki on that panel where it shoes all of the people chained to makima and seeing his name hurt, the guy who finally got what he really wanted, not revenge but a family, and to see that in Aki died happy in his mind would fill the toughest of men with tears
The Hayakawa Aki at the end... damn. Aki probably had the saddest end in Chainsaw Man. He became what he hated the most. Really awesome vid.

The most terrifying aspect about this specific instance of the gun devil, is that not only this is a mere 20% of the true power of this thing, but also the fact that SOMEONE BEAT THE DEVIL AT ITS 100%.
And got it's part rip apart and given to selected few country which they can now wield the gun devil power but at the cost........for example 1 year of life from all of your citizens......... whoever killed tis thing at 100% must be very very insanely strong.

To me, what makes this so horrifying is that this was only *20% of the gun devil*. Its so powerful even without the rest of its body, and it’s terrifying to think about!!
And that makes me wonder who the mysterious devil hunter (or maybe something else) that first took out the gun devil was. I read all the manga and I dont remember if we were given a name.

@@nightshade2826 It was never confirmed who did it, perhaps it will be in part 2. But, honestly the only realistic possibilities of who could have done it are Pochita, A horseman, a Primal devil, or some devil hunter/devil that is at a similar strength level as those beings but that we have not been introduced to yet.

Tbh, when Makima explained what the Gun devil was, for the 1st time, It felt like an eldritch horror to me. The way how Fujimoto just shows the destruction from afar and how fast everything is going down and how something is responsible for all that decimation and destruction. Its already scary to think about the experiences of shooting victims, and that scene I mentioned made it worse for me.
And also because of that scene, i got hooked and continued reading. I love this manga

For me it was the chapter where the Darkness Devil show up and rips everyone's arms off that made me love this manga.
This is actually scary, think about a massive devil just appearing and shooting your family members to death, imagine being a mother in this situation, brilliant sequence for an eerie scene. Keep doing these and you will find great success!

As Someone Who Read The Manga , But Didn't Notice Much Of The Gun Devil , Now I Realize HOW Terrifying This Devil Is.
Just thinking how Fujimoto wrote one of the bloodiest scenes with a baby names book near him.

I think the scariest thing about the Gun Devil isn’t so much the scope of destruction it causes, but how extremely specific and almost premeditated it seems. It’s abilities have seemingly random but highly specific conditions and targets in mind. It’s not just some random force of uncaring, destructive nature. It’s a genocidal hitman with an individual assassination plan for everything in its wake. The fact it can kill so quickly on such a large scale, but so precisely makes it so much more terrifying to me than almost anything else in fiction.

Something that WANTS to kill you is so much more scarier than something that just happened to.
Imagine being deep underwater, you see a giant sea monster that's big enough to swallow several towns in one go. It's moving in your direction, you try to swim away but are obviously engulfed in it's enormous mouth. Now, imagine this same beast, you try to swim away and notice it's massive eyes following you.

In the beginning of the story, you're supposed to fear the Gun Devil itself, but later you learn it's whoever's wielding it that should be feared, just like guns in real life.
Fujimoto is a genius.
I interpreted it as both. We have two things to fear: the immense power and violence of the Gun Devil (or rather, guns themselves), and the people who will weaponize it. Guns are not particularly scary if you ignore the human factor, but given to a person, who suddenly has the power to end another's life, guns become scary. The fact that this isn't even the Gun Devil's full form is insane. Its already incredibly horrifying and ridiculously fast. I understand we got the Gun Devil Fiend form. I read the entirety of part 1. But imagine a full body Gun Devil. How would you even go about fighting that? Chills man. Makima is the most terrifying entity in Chainsaw man. This thing is second. I'm sure some would disagree but that's my story I'm sticking to it.

In terms of how coldly methodical and terrifyingly calculating Makima is top tier,
But in terms of sheer destruction and death of others the Gun Devil has the edge in my opinion, just the fact his abilities are SO specific like the functions of a tool yet deliver such chaotic destruction to the point the exceptions/specifics barely even matter in just his 20% form is truly a horrifying delight.

@@newguy8288 I like to think one of the primal fear devils came from hell to stop the gun devil's superiority complex. Or a legit theory that I have is that it was the original chainsaw devil that attacked it. The OG chainsaw devil was seemingly incredibly feared and powerful so it's not far fetches that it could possibly defeat the gun devil at 100%. It would also make sense as to why the OG chainsaw devil devolved into Pochita: sure it may have defeated the gun devi, but what if it was a very tough fight and the chainsaw devil ended up barely making it out aliv, deforming into Pochita? It makes sense, since I feel like any devil stronger than gun devil would kill chainsaw devil fully, but anything weaker than gun devil probably wouldn't give the chainsaw devil THAT hard of a time.

another messed up part about the range difference between adults and chilldren is that if you are a parent withing 1500 range you are going to survive but you will see your child die.
Weirdly enough I think the coolest fight was between makima and the darkness devil. It was pretty much them just pointing at each other but it was so tense since it was pretty much who could get off their ability first and I loved it.
What's really scary about the Gun Devil is that it wasn't even a supremely powerful Devil or some eldritch fear

I think the best part of the anime is how little text they'd actually need to convey this. Just cutting back and forth to a timer counting down every passing second as the scene unfolds can afford a lot more time dedicated to the kill count. Really give you that uncomfortable feeling as even after the timer stops the names just keep coming.
The amount of dread I've had when reading these panels are just indescribable. The giant text of names just shows you how much devastation the Gun Devil leaves in just a few minutes
The gun devil rampage was one of the most terrifying things I got to witness in a manga.
The fact that this entire cataclysmic horror takes place in the span of 10 seconds is terrifying. This thing that ends hundreds of thousands of lives in an instant just disappears almost as quickly as it arrives
Dude… this is so perfect… and you’re one of the only people who could match a song so brutally perfect with a scene from Chainsaw Man. Like this gave me genuine chills, it’s so terrifyingly beautiful, soooo good job man…
I to this day still think that there’s so many songs from Clowncore’s Van album that fit Chainsaw Man, like “Tears of God” paired with Reze telling Denji she wants to run away with him, then it shifts to “Keyboard” when it’s revealed she BIT HIS TONGUE OFF.
“Existence” (with just a bit of editing) is a great song pared with Beam and Denji vs Typhoon devil, like they’re just acting like idiots until they BOLT to Reze and Typhoon. Then they fight. The ending I always have a reverb effect in my head to show how she just cuts the music to a halt when she blasts Denji and Beam down.
I don’t know if you’re reading this… but all I’m gonna ask, is PLEASE do more of these, you obviously get how to pair editing and pacing with music to make a perfect scene :)
Have heard the songs and you’re right it will fit pretty well because that is like the typical scene from a high schooler romance movie we’re they confess there feelings for each other and end up in a kiss but then it just come back to the reality they live in and turning the music as they show us that she literally bites his tongue off.

I have no idea what Chainsaw Man is, but *God damn* the death toll list was fucking horrifying.
A name gives someone basic identity, it establishes them as a person. "Millions dead" is a statistic, "The following millions of people died" is a respectful mourning, but also puts into perspective the horrifying scale of this calamity.
I remember the feeling I got when reading this scene. The impressive destructive force of nature that is the Gun devil.
Seeing every name. Seeing the destruction, the deaths, everything. This feeling of fear was so intense.
Then, I remember the SHEER TERROR I got when I saw Makima DESTROY this force of nature. This things capable of destroying cities in mere seconds beaten by a simple woman. The Gun devil was merely a pawn Fujimoto used to show us the absurd and terrific power of the only true devil known as Makima.
IKR!? I got chills seeing the gun devil leave so much death and destruction, but got bigger chills seeing Makima’s stone cold face subdoing it with ease. Makima was the true devil here!
Makima is really something huh? She evil beyond belief and yet so stone cold and powerfull you cant help but be entranced by it, which is the point, obviously. But seeing her last moments of happiness because she finally reached her goal, which was so innocent compared to everything she has done by that point was just...

Honestly, I was hesitant to click this. The gun devil sequence is one of my favorite things ever put on a page. I doubted this rando youtube recommendation would live up to my comically high expectations for it so I was just gonna skip it. But lingering in my brain was "what if it is that good though?" So I gave it a chance.
And I love it. It handled the names and the shots of the gun devil's victims perfectly. It didn't linger too long on the devil itself and my only point of contention is the Makima stuff but that's just personal preference and only the last few seconds of the video anyways. Great stuff
If Mappa gets to this part of the story I hope they bring in their A Game, with a haunting soundtrack, meticulously crafted animation playing along the full list of the people killed by the Gun Devil's reappearance. All only to end with Aki's own name.
God I keep coming back to this animation everything about it is sooo good. The timing, the animation, the synergy of both of those with the music... This elevated an already great scene to a whole new level. It makes me go a little crazy.

The entire stretch of the manga from the bath with Power chapter (71) till Power's return as the Blood Devil (91) is just perfect, actual peak fiction.
I really doubt the anime will be able to handle this part with the same emotional weight you placed in this edits and the song. Truly masterful. How in the end the song keeps going and rising while listing the names is just amazing.

The best way I image them animating this scene is to have a bunch of voice actor saying the name as the moment play out, the names becoming background noise as if it’s overwhelming us the viewer. The only other sound in the scene being the narrator calmly explaining the Gun Devil’s ability activation and perhaps gunshot.
At least that how I imagine the scene playing out when I read it.
