    As much as I love a good book haul, what I read, and those kind of videos... There is something SO satisfying seeing what people didn't like!

    I read The Witch King and gave it 5 stars. In my review on Goodreads I said that for people that have only read her short Murderbot books and not her Raksura fantasy series, it might be harder to get through. Her longer books tend toward a lot of world building and usually a long journey. I read this as a physical copy and I think the audio is a lot harder for people to figure out when it's a flashback or what's going on. I really vibe with her writing style and love that her MCs are usually powerful, misunderstood or mistreated, but trying to do the right thing and that her worlds are queer norm. I'd totally give it a second chance.

      Prior to reading Witch King, I read all the Murderbot and Raksura books. Witch King ending up being a big disappointment for me. I read the whole thing, but I thought the structure made it harder to follow and I wished Wells had focused on the story that was told in the flashbacks.

      You mean there are gay characters? In Murderbot too?

    The Witch King is a very slow story. I think people get thrown off by the slowness of the story, and that’s totally fair. It’s very much so a journey and during that journey you find out from the flashbacks that there’s also a bit of a love story. It’s definitely about found family. It’s definitely about fixing relationships and finding home.
    I loved it, but it might be something for when you can just sit in front of the fireplace and just calmly read a slow story.

    The Sun and the Void was a book with a lot of debut issues. I am super curious about the sequel cause I think this author has a ton of potential and I know she had to switch editors part way thru cause her first one left Orbit. So having a book go through a process without that bump intrigues me

      I agree. It took awhile for the world to come together for me but I loved it. Martha Wells plunges you in head first and does not hold your hand but the characters and story makes it well worth the effort. If the audiobook wasn’t working for someone I would suggest picking up a hard copy.

    Three of these, Witch King, Jasad Heir and The Sun and the Void were in my Illumicrate subscription box and while look beautiful, were so disappointing😢 The Sun and the Void needed some serious editing and the writing didn’t ‘click’ for me. Witch King was just ‘ok’. I had a fun time reading Jasad Heir and will probably read the sequel but agree that it felt YA.

    I felt the same about Witch King as you. I started it in the summer, got about 25% in, and decided it was NFN (not for now). It had such a cool world, though, so I think about it all the time. I plan to finish it someday.

    Painted Devils had a wonderful ending. Witch King I found very fun and I loved the interactions. The flashbacks are a little too frequent imo, but I still loved the story. They are both worth picking back up.

    I feel EXACTLY the same about Witch King. I soft DNF'd it over the summer at about halfway through and have yet to pick it back up. I felt like there was an expectation that I'd be a lot more invested in the characters than I was at that point. I often feel that way with some of the side characters in Murderbot, too, but that's helped by Murderbot being first person and getting to care about the others because IT cares about the others. Witch King doesn't have as much reason for me to care about these people. Curious if I should pick it back up and push through.

    I read The Witch King I don't know where they would go with a sequel found it OK but I didn't really think it ever got fully fleshed out. I did like how what we might consider good was the bad guys and what we might consider bad was the heroes.

    I have Thief Liar Lady on my TBR, so it's interesting to hear that it does that cheap approach of cutting you out of their thoughts to make the narrative work.

    I read the ARC of the sun and the void! It’s a *very* ambitious book that could have used a bit more work. It does a decent job of exploring colonialism, humanity, and other topics though, so you need to be in the mood for that! :)

    I like The Sun and the Void. It's like learning about things Colombian/Venezuelan- culture, sentimentalities, etc. Also, rare metals are an integral part of the story. I understand and appreciate it because I'm a chemist by training. I read that the author is a trained chemical engineer, so we're birds of a feather. I want to read The Jasad Heir. I like learning things Arabic, Middle Eastern, etc. Nice show. Thank you.

    I really liked the Jasad Heir. It’s the first ARC I’ve ever received so maybe that made it a little more endearing to me. 😊

    I enjoyed Witch King, but I couldn't give it more than 3 stars because to understand it, I literally had to restart the entire audiobook over again. I couldn't keep track of names or who was who. I have never had to do that with a book, so for me that wasn't a great sign of a well-written book.
    However, would I read a sequel? Yes.

    I'm currently reading Witch King. I actually started it in the summer and really liked the opening, but then started to lose interest and put it down at nearly the halfway point. I decided to put a hold for the audiobook from the library. I got it the audiobook from the library last week and now am at about 75% and the stories picked up again and i am enjoying it much more than the middle part of the book.

    I'm surprised people think there's going to be more for Which King, it felt like a pretty closed ending to me. I think if you weren't enjoying it, I wouldn't continue on. Past the opening, which was awesome, it was pretty middling to me, and whilst I think most things got answered by the end, I didn't find myself caring by that point because it just took too long to get the answers.

    I finished witch king twice and I'm still not sure what's going on lol, I dnfd then finished thief liar lady do think the ending gives you more of Ash as am individual but it is ultimately a setup for a series, currently struggling with Jasad Heir plot feels too continent and just I feel like there was a less tropey way to bring these two characters together

    I read a lot of YA, and I get what you mean about some of them feeling a lot younger than others. One that I read recently was Legendborn. I could tell it was a good book but for some reason I felt too old for that one. Haha. I find it interesting how YA is so broad that some of them feel like they’re made to still appeal to an older audience but others the focus is solely on teenagers

    • @jasminv8653
      @jasminv8653 8 месяцев назад +2

      It's definitely an issue in marketing. Teens are a great demographic for making money, but adult women can sometimes be even better if you manage to convince them they're still teenagers.

    • @victoriamasters
      @victoriamasters 8 месяцев назад

      @@jasminv8653 marketing is for sure a huge part of it, but also YA covers such a broad age range where people develop so quickly. There’s a big difference in maturity when you’re following a 14 year old vs 16 vs 18 and those all fall under YA.

    Huge fan of Martha Wells. I have read almost everything that she has written.
    Having said that I have to admit that I hated the Witch King. I wish I had DNF it, cause I had a really bad time reading it. Glad to find out I was not the only one.

  • @ninamckinley

    I liked Witch King but it wasn’t a favorite. For me the flash backs were boring and I really didn’t need them, also the whole story seemed like it was dragging a bit, a lot of it was travel but I was find with that because I love lore and world building the most. I’m not usually a character driven reader but give me some good world building and I’m so hooked. The end was just meh and I can see where people are wondering if there will be more books.

    Do you guys rate books on goodreads if you dnf'ed it? I read 52% of a book recently and it felt like such a waste of time to quit that far into it, and I still decided not to rate it

    witch king was a huge disappointment for me. martha wells got so caught up in her imaginative worldbuilding she forgot to write plot and characters. the book felt very experimental but in a negative sense, sort of like a failed experiment, in my opinion. and i think it's really just going to remain a standalone🤷‍♀

      DNF is a book that a person read but “did not finish”. When she says “soft DNF”, she’s referring to books she didn’t finish at the time but intends to go back to at some point in the future.

  • @uglystupidloser
    @uglystupidloser 8 месяцев назад

    uh you actually have me interested for thief liar lady by the level of your investment. the characters may be really off putting and you may be really annoyed at your immersion breaking because of your disagreement with how the characters are acting.
    i can also appreciate the things that you point out, because, conceptually, it sounds interesting. how many girls say that they would rather die than be ugly?
    well, that is kind of the angle here with the knife on the thigh scene.
    how does a female think in a fantasy world?
    what are the social pressures?
    and the very feminine desire to find a suitable partner?
    i think i don't really hear about those enough.
    we see women imitating male action heroes or roles...
    when women are already superheroes. superheroines. whatever.
    they have story and perspective that can show so much.
    i think a lot of stories have cheap cardboard cutouts of women.
    this sounds like there is a lot of feminine perspective. it's driving how scenes are created.
    i... may not read it... but it's interesting.
    i appreciate listening to you emotionally digest it.
    how does a woman author made a woman reader feel?
    that is interesting and authentic dialogue. i can learn from this.
