ACOTAR isn’t the best from SJM, but it does have a place in my heart lol. If you ever do decide to reread it for the heck of it, I recommend the dramatized audiobook because it makes it feel like a cheesy soap opera with the background music & voice actors. It made me laugh out loud and was honestly so fun as a reread 😂

I teach The Iliad and hesitated reading The Song of Achilles because I didn’t want to be disappointed or frustrated with this epic that I love so much. However, I broke down this year and read it, and I absolutely loved it. Yes, Achilles is fully wrapped up in himself and makes selfish decisions because he wants honor and glory. Had he not acted this way in her novel, I actually would have been disappointed. For the most part, it was a completely plausible and accurate retelling that I thoroughly enjoyed. I am sure my love of The Iliad (and Achilles) played a significant role in my overall enjoyment of the novel.

re Wayne, I kind of agree. I think a lot of us wanted to see more personal growth in him over the books, but he is kind of the exact same, just more insightful.
re ACOTAR I only listened to the graphic audio, doubt I would have the patience to physically read it, but even so through the first book I thoroughly exercised my eyeballs ability to roll. But eventually I did get caught up in it and ended up loving it. And through personal experience I'd say my unpopular opinion is that the people who love to hate on it are book snobs. But the hate for ACOTAR also goes hand in hand with the way society in general tends to hate on whatever girls love, be it music, film, books etc.
re Adaptations I disagree completely. I love the WoT show and I think the hate is completely unjustified.

OMG, I'm with you completely on Era 2 of Mistborn. Shadows of Self was my favorite too. And yes, that series would be 100% better if Wayne wasn't in it. I know bc on my last reread before Lost Metal came out, i just skipped the portions where he was the focus and it elevated the series. That would be more difficult to do with Lost Metal, making that the weakest of the quartet.

Agreed with King of Scars and Rule of Wolves. I finished both of them, but I honestly remember very little from the two of them. I can't even really remember what the "reveal" you're talking about is because I just didn't enjoy it as much as I did Six of Crows. And Nikolai was one of my favorite characters, so I was bummed that I just didn't enjoy it nearly as much.
For SJM, I've only read one of her series, being Throne of Glass. So the most I can make for an unpopular opinion there is that while I loved the series, I also can't deny that it has its flaws. I love it AND I'm also so critical of it. And I love that I can have that dichotomy. Also, Heir of Fire is one of my favorite books of the series (currently re-reading the series and I'm on this book right now, reliving all my favorite parts). I know so many people dislike it and end up DNF-ing the series at that book, but I absolutely love it.

It's not that I hate her books nor is it a case of "I dont understand why so many people like this" - it's just that I read the original Farseer trilogy until the end and it sent me into such a deep depression that I started avoiding books for a few months 😅 and since then every time I try to pick up something by her I get book-ptsd and have to dnf 😔

Agreed on the King of Scars duology. I had that same "um, ok" response at the one reveal, and then I completely forgot I read the second book. Looking at it on Goodreads confirms I had good reason to forget, eesh.
I think I need to reread Song of Achilles because I mostly remember the excellent prose. I've always thought Achilles was an egotistical jerk though so I might have taken that aspect with a grain of salt. My opinion of worst retelling was Phaedra. It had some interesting aspects but it just felt like a slow motion car wreck.
In the SJM vein, my unpopular opinions are Aelin is my least favorite character in Throne of Glass and I hate the end of Crescent City 2/House of Breath and Sky.

  • @MaiaDawnWolf

I have tried to read several of Sarah J. Maas's series and I haven't really liked any of them, which is fine, she gets more than enough love from other readers. I had a similar problem with Cassandra Clare. I have a complicated relationship with books by Mark Lawrence's books - I like his writing but why are all of his characters always angry, and why does he have to repeatedly tell me how angry they are? - but I did really enjoy The Book That Wouldn't Burn. I'm still wading through the second era of Mistborn which so far has been kind of meh but I'm determined to get through it.

    Matching the vibe lol 😄
ACOTAR is... okay. It's a good read, it's fun but it's Black Jewels fan fic and it's not well written. None of SJM's work is. So, I'm glad she gets love for her work, I don't hate it, I do read it, it's just not worth the hype her work gets for being 'amazing fantasy'. If I never got another book from her I would not be upset, I'd just move on to the next person who writes something similar. It's brain candy and there's lots available. Anne Bishop did it first and someone else will keep doing it.
Mistborn Era 2... it was okay, too. Loved the reveal, it was amazing. I shipped the ship. But, it is probably my least favorite set of books from Sanderson. Wayne didn't bother me 🤣I've known Waynes.
The Six of Crows Duology is literally the only thing I like from Bardugo.

I think I have to agree that Shadows of Self is the best book in Mistborn era 2. Wayne isn't my favorite character, but I was able to understand his character so his humor didn't detract from my enjoyment. But I understand why he's so polarizing.
Jade War was almost ruined for me after what happened at the end of Part 1. I had to put the book down for a week. That has never happened to me before. However, after I had more time to reflect, I respected the author's choice and continued to love the series.

I can totally understand having a book ruined or almost ruined by the author taking it in a different direction. I think it mostly depends on your expectations and how you think it should turn out but there’s definitely been times where I was reading something, there was some twist, big or small, and I was like… that’s the direction you took this? Really?

  • @OrcaneVault

I not sure era 2 works without Wayne, you need someone with Wax who is more reckless to get Wax moving. And era 2 would feel much darker without Wayne.

  • @sarahmellinger2907
    @sarahmellinger2907 8 месяцев назад

I didn’t realize this was an unpopular opinion until recently, so here’s mine.
I thought Mistborn was a 6 book series, and was super excited to see how book 4 was going to fix the ending of book 3. And then it was a whole new thing way in the future and felt like a western (which I hate), and I almost never wanted to read another Brandon Sanderson book because of it. I LOVED Mistborn until the end of book three. And then I read the first three books of era 2 and I felt so betrayed. I felt like Sanderson had completely lost it. Like he made a wild decision at the end of book 3 and then didn’t know what to do with the story from there, and just decided to forget it all and start fresh in the future with new, annoying, characters, and with a plot that sucked.
In my attempt to see if this was his one and only big mistake as a writer, I tried the Way of Kings a couple years back. I was bored to death by the writing style, and only just finished it this year. It was alright, but not amazing. It was so unnecessarily long and dense, and the writing style was bland with an extra helping of boring. I am literally only planning on continuing because I want Szeth to murder all the boring characters, aka everyone except Hoid.
I also read Tress, which is my favorite of all his books I’ve read. I’m hoping that I’ll like Yumi. The reason I loved Tress so much is because it had style and personality, unlike everything else he writes. I know that not everyone else in the world needs a book to be fancy and extra to enjoy it, but apparently I do. The humor in Tress is my exact sense of humor, and I want more of it, please and thank you. If Sanderson doesn’t give us the promised Hoid book soon I will riot.

I agree 100 % about song of Achilles. Beautiful prose, but the main characters were frustrating. Both of them. One was awful and the other was stupid to fall in love with and put up with him.. I didn’t enjoy their love story because I didn’t think they should be together. Also, the ending was ridiculous. The very end of the story, I mean. It was so cringe. I don’t know if I was supposed to feel moved by it but I just felt ashamed on behalf of the author. I enjoyed the prose so much that even though I hated the story and the characters I would give any other book she writes a chance. I hear Circe is better.

My unpopular opinion is that V.E. Schwab is an absolutely god awful character writer. She's got 3 little puppets she shoves into every story and none of them are very interesting or well-developed. And they're all static characters. I've read 3 of her books at this point - Vicious, A Darker Shade of Magic, and The Invisible Life of Addie Larue, and the girls are all the same, the guys are all the same, the stories all have the exact same tone and atmosphere, and honestly they were just /boring/. The woman can't write characters because she's got 3 little dudes in her head she refuses to give up. Or maybe she's just bad at character work. Either way, never reading another of hers again. Those three were mistakes.
