CORRECTION: While chatting with Brandon, I mentioned liking the ending of the book related to Rand and Ishamael due to them being "best" friends in AoL. I mixed up Be'lal being friends with Lews, not Ishamael. So, not the fun connection that came to mind in that moment.

“You didn't listen to me," Lan whispered. One last lesson. The hardest. Demandred struck, and Lan saw his opening. Lan lunged forward placing Demandred's sword point against his own side and ramming himself forward onto it.
"I did not come here to win," Lan whispered, smiling. "I came here to kill you. Death is lighter than a feather."
Demandred's eyes opened wide, and he tried to pull back. Too late. Lan's sword took him straight though the throat.”
Greatest single passage in any fantasy book of all time, in my opinion. "Death is lighter than a feather".

I wear the ki’sain, Master Aldragoran. My husband wears the hadori. So do you. Will Lan Mandragoran ride to the Last Battle alone?”

I always assumed Egwene’s death was planned because I thought it was foreshadowed by a story told early on in, maybe in book 5, about Eldrene ay Ellas ay Carlan. She was an incredibly powerful Aes Sedai who married King Aemon of Manetheren. When Aemon died in a last battle, Eldrene draw on too much power to destroy the enemy at the cost of her own life. The power she unleashed created earthquakes which created the aquifer called the Winespring and Egwene is from the Winespring Inn. I saw this all as compelling evidence that Egwene was a reincarnation of Eldrene.

I do like this parallel, I agree that the story elements fit and apply to Egwene and Gawyn. It also always felt to me as a nice turn on the constant dreaming/foretelling that she had about her dual paths with Gawyn. It was always stated that on one path he becomes her warder, the other he does not. And on one path she dies, and the other she does not. In typical heroic journey reader fashion,. we all assumed gawyn being her warder put her on the path to live, but in fact the path where he became her warder is the path where she dies.
But on the other path, the Last battle is lost. As Brandon talked about here, without her sacrifice countering the effects of balefire, the pattern would possibly have unraveled.

@@hopelessnecromantic2794 I’m an adherent of the theory that Egwene was *also* Latra Posae Decume, (The head of the female Aes Sedai/The Fateful Concord, which refused to go along with Lews Therin Telamon’s plan for the Sealing of the Bore)
If you read *The Strike at Shayol Gul* , the scene in Tel’aran’rhiod after “Integrated Rand” comes to tell Egwene he intends to break the Seals, where Egwene tells this to Elayne & Nyneave, *and* the AMOL scene where Egwene & Rand are arguing about the Seals, just before Moiraine comes in, you’ll find exact, and I mean near word-for-word parallels in all three places.

@@shawnpanzegraf5642 yeah I always read her as more Latra Posae Decume. But this time (unlike in the 2nd age) despite all their disagreements I think because of Egwene and Rand's childhood friendship they still had some level of respect and love for each other which is why he turned over 3 seals to her (though he didn't know they were fake at the time).

      @shawnpanzegraf5642 Год назад +8

@@davidryan8547 Agreed, but I think there being someone they both had a deep and abiding respect for the judgment of really helped the most.
When you look at how Egwene dismissed Nyneave disagreeing with her on the basis of a very logically sound rationale, as nothing but evidence that Nyneave was being influenced by Rand’s “te’veren-ness”.. despite only moments earlier thinking to herself how level-headed about important things Nyneave generally is, then at how she assumed Elayne was disagreeing with her because she loved Rand, it shows a tendency toward a myopic sort of “I know best” thinking on Egwene’s part.
It couldn’t be that some of the smartest, most capable women Egwene knows could *simply be right, and her possibly be wrong* , oh no, there must be external factors essentially *forcing* Nyneave & Elayne to disagree with her.
For three thousand years, the women have been cursing Lews Theron’s “rash act” , but the Strike at Shayol Gul reveals there was every reason to believe that if the spies *had* been able to retrieve the Access-Key ter’angreal for the Choden Kal, and the women had been able to implement there “Contain the Bore in a super-ward made of oceans-worth of saidin & saidar, the result would have been the Dark One not just Tainting *both* Saidin & Saidar, they would have been Tainted to such an extent that *every* channeler, man and woman alike, *all* would have gone instantly insane, like Lews Therin & The Hundred Companions did.
The Dark One was able to touch Saidin for a single instant as the last Seal was placed. Once he escaped the Bore, and could touch the surface of the Fateful Concord’s “Super Ward” as long as It/He liked?
And Lews Therin took the rap, heh.

I assumed she would end up dying after a dream she had in crown of swords. (I may be wrong about the book. It was a dream pre-tower split.) I need to re-read soon but something about her trying so hard to save everything and realizing she could lie in a dream pretty early on. The scene fascinated me and stuck with me, I felt like the payoff of her death worked in my mind with that one particular dream.

At that time Logain was still off the deep end with Androl essentially leading the resistance against Taim and I think the Aes Sedai would value the link Pevara had with the Black Tower. Logain makes sense to lead the Black Tower, but I was totally flabbergasted when they attempted to make Cadsuane the new Amyrlin, she is a beacon for the old ways of the Aes Sedai and basically everything that was wrong with them.

Way back when The Dragon Reborn, came out, I was Robert Jordan's liaison for part of his Waldenbooks tour. This was the first time we met- I saw him at conventions a few times after and he always remembered me. Anyhow. While we were on a lunch break during the signing at the Oaks Mall, he told me that the series was "supposed" to be a trilogy, but nobody was where they needed to be...yet. He said, "You see, I dreamed the end first." I always remembered that. He was grinning like a little kid. And every time after that, I would say "really???" and he would say "not yet..." He and Harriet were a favorite on tours. Piers Anthony was my next favorite tour author... I miss him...

I've heard the story about how he started with the ending, and I've always thought that he wanted it to be a single book first, but wasn't happy with not introducing 3/4 of the characters, or giving a real satisfying ending, or giving full answers to the things he had foreshadowed (like Min's visions). So he decided to make it a trilogy. And at the end of book 3, all of our main characters end up in the same place and it's a somewhat satisfying ending, except he still hadn't introduced most of the Forsaken, or the visions of Min, Perrin, and Egwene. So he added a scene to the end: "I don't think this was really the Dark One, it's just some guy". And after that, he knew it would be an epic, so he started formalizing the magic system, introducing all of his characters, and limiting himself to visions of things that had already been foreshadowed elsewhere.

@@rustygray5058 The Dragon Reborn was #3 and he was fielding calls from folks during the signing (Harriet played secretary). I was asking about those calls at lunch when he told me he originally sold it on spec as a trilogy, but he knew it would be longer. He said "a bit" longer. Then I asked him about his process because I had read some of the Conan stories as well. We talked about all the myth and world-building in Eye of the World- that he promised would be paid off- and I asked how much longer. He laughed and looked at Harriet. Then he said "the problem is I dreamed the ending first. Now I have to get everybody where they are supposed to be." After that tour, I would meet him at writing conventions. I always checked in after reading the next book. I helped him leave in a hurry from one. I was upset when I heard the diagnosis had gone terminal. When Brandon was hired, I went and found everything he wrote. I loved that he could write YA and then switch to high fantasy. I grocked that his world-building aligned with Jordans. My middle child has devoured everything and was one of the first on his kickstarter. I was glad to read the ending and loved hearing that it was Jordan's. The last bit of writing...

Piers Anthony was a wonderful man, too. My junior year in high school (A flea-speck institution literally situated between two cow fields) he came to speak to my AP English class (He lived about 20 mins from Dunnellon High)…
His Incarnations of Immortality series are some of my favorite novels ever, and they meant a lot to me when my family was moving here from up north…
Anyways, I told him about that talking after his talk, and just kind of wistfully said “Wish I’d have known they moved your talk up by a couple of days when I got ready this morning, I tracked down all the first printings, and I would have loved to have you sign them for me. I love how you can tell a serious, engaging story, and still be witty, funny, and snarky throughout.”
“Got someone you could call to bring them here?” Piers Anthony replied.
He waited half an hour without the slightest sign of impatience, talking with several of us aspiring writers the entire time. Being dryly witty and just…fun.
The faculty tried to create a graceful out to “get him out of there,” but he was having none of it.
Anyone can write, some people can write well, with enough earned sweat equity.
It takes still more than quality storytelling to make a Jordan or an Anthony, though.
Light bless and keep all such Authors, for they are rarer and more precious than all the riches of the earth.

I love this reveal! It's consistent with Lanfear's portrayal throughout the series to outwit her foes this way, and much better than such a powerful character, in a fairly deus ex way, being easily defeated by a surge of heroism at the last moment. Evidence, apart from being officially the strongest female Chosen: various characters repeat her claim to being the mistress of TAR, which is necessary to pulling off this play (but, tellingly, even smart ones such as Moghedien don't believe she is... Which is exactly what Lanfear would want, assuming it was true, and she was well-prepared for the trick); in this case, the fabled stories about her turn out to be true (nice subversion of the trope that most of the Chosen were overestimated); plus she did have the compulsion on Perrin planted way earlier in the series!

Ive always dismissed Lanfear- in my humble opinion, once Rand loses his Selene crush, she has no hold on him and doesn't seem to affect much. Perhaps she's the most powerful, but other than removing moiraine, giving some assistance at the Stone, and turning Kadere into a large wine skin... Add to that, every single powerful person in TAR acts like they are the most skilled. Thus Perrins "it's only a weave" ending made sense to me. But clearly I've missed some nuance, or even things of major importance!

The cleansing of the ways would have been a give i thought since the taint was removed from power. If there had not have been a major sacrifice in the final battle it would have felt hollow. I found A Memory Of Light to dense and frustratingly action heavy. Splitting it up into two books would have been perfect, in my opinion. Most of the book felt like a third act twisting and turning and undulating in an overstimulating way. More room to breath and more character driven spaces in the story. Could have had a nice cool down after the battle at well..... Easier to say goodbye after a good cool down.

I always thought of the pipe lighting as, Rand saw the entire universe, all universes, in his fight with the Dark One. He may not understand it all, but he grasped enough to not need the mere One Power or the True Power either. He simply thinks, and it happens now because his understanding of nature, the Power, everything, is now so far beyond any human, even the Chosen.

My interpretations of the pipe scene was that, due to the body swap, rand accomplished the requirements of "two souls one body" that makes one able to go into the world of dreams in the flesh, and be a dreamer. And for some reason related to that, he was able to use that connection to the world of dreams to "will" the pipe alight, as if in the world of Dreams. I thought the whole conversation with Slayer and perrin on this subject was foreshadowing for this. WELP, since there isnt a definite answer, this is my canon still.

So he becomes a mentor type persona, giving Perrin key advice the character needs at the right time- but only if he asks the right questions. Thus, the book becomes a quest for the right questions, because all the right questions HAVE answers.
