- I've been eyeing this piece of wood for years, waiting for it to dry. I just knew it was going to be beautiful! Maybe if someone else had turned it but, I ruined it! Finished in shellac.

A few comments about my title being "click bait." because it indicates some disaster, I guess. That was not my intention. I mis-judged this piece. I got all caught up in trying to save the bark and utilize as much of the heart wood as I could. I ruined the piece because I didn't take into account the combination of the flat sides and the difference between the length and the width of the piece. I always try not to remove any more wood then I have to but should have approached this piece in a different way. I'm just disgusted with myself.
Remember what Bob Ross always said, there are no mistakes, only Happy Accidents.
I really believe you're being unnecessarily critical of it, Phil. It turned out to be a beautiful piece, with lots of interesting bits to see.
I got what you meant. I figured it was because you didn't want to lose the bark. It was an amazing piece.

You can't undo once your started removing wood. You made the best of it and it's still a nice piece.

I grew up with plum trees, but never saw the gorgeous purple veining of the inside! Your creations remind me of people- we are all unique in our strengths and weaknesses, beautiful in our varied shapes and colors, thicknesses or otherwise. I wouldn't say you ruined the piece, Phil. Some chunks of great wood just don't want to be perfect, so we do what we can with them and move on to a better chunk. Plum wood is definitely gorgeous and definitely loves to crack!

We are our own worst critics!. Is it any surprise that we say the wood takes us where it needs to go, yet we aren't always pleased with the destination? It's beautiful, Phil. The wood, of course, is really nice, and your treatment of it is as always spot on. Its heavy and won't tip over easy and can be used for self-defense. Job well done!

I think we are our own worst critics. To me, it is a beautiful piece of art. It would have been ruined if it had ended up in someone's fireplace. What you and other artists do with wood is amazing. We see the beauty within and assist only to show the world what the wood wants to be.

Every bowl that you make is "one of a kind" Just like any other ARTIST'S work. So this one came out a bit different. That doesn't mean that you ruined it. Sometimes the substrate has a say in how the project turns out. All the artist has to do is listen and see what the project is telling him. That you always do.

This piece is lovely and chunky, just right for filling with hot bread rolls, fresh from the oven, to eat with hot, chunky soup, in the middle of winter. Yum!

Don’t be so hard on yourself, Phil. You have to go where the wood takes you. Carole and I really liked the end result - it may not have been what you intended to end up with, but sometimes a piece of “treen” with more solidity to it does make sense, and Carole and I both think this was one of those. As I said in one of my other recent comments, I would give that house room in a second. And watching the transformation you guide continues to be a highly effective way for me to relax.

My grandfather had a wide edge bowl he kept shelled nuts in with holes for the tools. When he passed I kept it. Thank you for reminding me of that!

Well you had me going with that title. I hardly look on that piece as any kind of failure. I love that some bowls turn out thick and heavy by virtue of the shape of the piece. I think you, again, brought out the best of this piece. Thanks for sharing!

Mr Phil, this piece is beautiful just like any of your other work. It may not be an exceptional standout piece. But that doesn't mean it's not beautiful. You still put your amazing expertise to work on it. I think you're being a bit overly self- critical.

Don’t be so hard on yourself Phil, it is a little different but still has a lot of character, nothing wrong with chunky sides every now and then, I’m starting to get a bit chunkier as I get older 😂 , always good to watch your videos.

I have a 20 year old plum tree in my front yard that I may have to take down due to beetles, so I may have a lot of wood to practice on soon. So, I can learn from your successes and mistakes. "Every turn is an opportunity to learn " as they say.

All my life I have been my biggest critic & have frequently been taken to task over that. I understand that you have the right to be disappointed with this piece but at the same time it is far from being a disaster. You love to retain bark as often as possible & you love to retain as much heartwood as possible in your pieces. You have, therefore, been true to yourself in this piece & can not ask for more. It is still a very nice bowl with a nice finish but overall the wood decided a lot of the shape. Head up mate, tomorrow is another day & your skill will not diminish. Sometimes Phil you just don't get what we think we're going to get from a piece of wood. That piece of Lilac I told you about yesterday is still sitting on the lathe because I'm just not sure yet on the outside profile. It's a little bit frustrating when you have something in mind but just can't get there. It's all part of the process of turning wood. Anywho happy turning my friend ☺️

Phil, I think you're being a little tough on yourself by saying the wood turning is ruined. I think the bowl looks great. With the cracks and missing pieces of bark, I think it just adds character to the turning. We see flaws in nature all around us everyday. The cracks are part of nature. Embrace those flaws whether they are bug runs, cracks, weird figure or what ever. I am amazed over many of your wood turnings and their beauty. Thank you for sharing your wood turning videos with us.

Hi Phil Sometimes you can only get what the wood will give and be happy with it in the end. Ruined is not a word that I would use to describe this bowl. The bark
and heart wood keep it beautiful as always in your turnings. Think you can take the thumb off Phil, maybe not your best but better than my best.

I wouldn't say you've ruined it. I've always been of a mind that the wood tells you what it wants to be. Yes, we can try and force it into a shape, but we can't forget that wood is a natural thing, and we strive to show the nature in its best light.
