Naked Juniper Bowl! - Wood Turning

- My first time turning Juniper and boy, did I have a lot to learn! Very delicate sap wood, beautiful heartwood. Sweet aroma. Due to pieces of the sap wood just ripping away, the shape is not at all what I had in mind, but somehow, it still works! Finished in Feed & Wax.

Happy Heavenly Birthday to your wife.
Happy Birthday Tuffy.
😊
When you started it sounded just like one of my old washing machine engines. Instant smile on my face
😊
Cracks Phil! Cracks! I hollered but you didn't hear me. I kept thinking you would say I have a crack here or over here. Beautiful peice. You need to add a rope bail to those ears to complete the bucket. Lovely wood and great finish. And a lovely tribute to your wife. Condolences my friend. You honor her with every bowl!
Thank you, Steve! So many bucket comments! 😄
It's not just the really cool wood turnings you do that I enjoy, but also everything you bring to the channel!
You're a awesome guy!
Thank you Phil, for being you!
Wow, thank you for that, Tyler! 😊
I second that.
Well said Tyler.
The wood told you how it wanted to be instead of your plan. Mother Nature simply had a different idea for you, and you heard her. It is different from many of your recent pieces, and it is splendid! Nice tribute to your friend and also to your bride. 💗
Thank you very much, Vicki! 😄
Very well said, Vickie!
@Cordelia Holt Best wishes for a speedy cure and healing, Cordelia.
Happy birthday Tuffy & certainly a happy heavenly birthday to your wife! Another great piece in the books, Phil. It looks like an old leather football helmet.
I see that now, Joshua, thanks! 😊
Phil, what a delight to have you back to your full powers and doing a proper bowl project. I hope that signals a return to good health and vigor. Very pretty piece!! Love it!!
Thank you, Dick! 😄 I'm doing just fine!
Gosh Phil, I think that top ripping off was God saying "hey look what I'm hiding under here"! That really turned out gorgeous. Great job, Blessings to you. Rick in MT.
Yes! Thank you, Rick! 😊
Happy birthday Tuffy. Happy Heavenly Birthday to Mrs Anderson may God Bless you Ma’am. Wow another beautiful piece Phil!! God Bless you my friend. ✝️
Thank you, Jay! 😊
You never cease to amaze me Phil. Great job, beautiful bowl. Thanks once more for another take-along!
Thank you for your comment! 😊
Happy Birthday Tuffy and especially a Happy Heavenly Birthday to your Beautiful Wife!

Yeah. And the best.
at times, the wood will take you where it wants to go... just hang on and enjoy the ride... oh and congratulations on retaining all your digits... with no blood.. good job Phil... love yall...
Thank you, Jack! 😊
Hi Phil, I'm pleased to report that the back door is finally painted (the fourth coat did it) with fresh bottom door sealer strips added and the errant paint on the windows steel wooled off. Good for another 6 to 10 years, I hope. Beautiful Juniper Bowl!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
😊
Hey Phil...that is so nice!
Also since I'm a recent subscriber, I hadn't realized that your wife passed away until you wished her a happy Heavenly birthday. My condolences. ❤
Thank you, Audie. 😊
Knowing how pretty juniper wood is, I was still dubious about the bowl. Then I was drawn up waiting for you to break a finger on it. Whew! Glad it worked out and I am no longer tense. And it turned out beautiful!
It was just a bit scary for a time there. 😄 I'm glad you like it, thank you! 😄
Ohhhh, as you tell us the wood tells us what it supposed to be. Bet the shop smelled wonderful. Juniper or Eastern Red Cedar as we call it, is beautiful wood. It is hard and soft at the same time. Happy Birthday to your friend Tuffy, and your beautiful wife in heaven. Thanks for all your videos,Phil. I never miss them. They are the highlight of my Thursday evening. Have a great weekend ❤
What a surprise to here my name and see the chunk I gave you. Sorry about the bark it never wants to stay on. As usual you made a beautiful bowl out of what most people would call fire wood.
I like it very much.
So kind of you, Jane, thank you! 😊
Thank you again, Arland! 😊
Great grain on this on. You made me burst out with laughter , with your Toughy remark. A good laugh is healing . Thanks
You will probably need healing after you drill that well, Steve! LOL! Thanks, buddy! 😄
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop ya I might need a day off
That's a lovely piece that reallly celebrates the wood.
There ya go, Kathleen! That's what I try to do, thanks for noticing! 😄
The natural shape is quite lovely to my eyes!
Yay! 😊
That sure could have been a knuckle buster. I could smell it from here. Great piece
Smells sweet, Chris! 😄
Happy heavenly birthday Mrs.Phil and happy birthday to Tuffy. Such a unique piece Phil l love it!!
Thank you so very much for mentioning little old me, I am glad that the package arrived safely, it looks like it was in good shape.
👍😎
Thank you Luie for sending the black cherry to Phil. It looks like a piece he will have fun turning. And it will be for ALL to enjoy! 😊
You should see it now, Luie! Thanks again for sending it! 😄
We’re you able to make a video? (I hope I hope)

Happy heavenly birthday Mrs Shady Acres and the famous Tuffy x
Thank you, Mandy! 😄
Always a good day when I see a new video from Shady Acres 👏
I'm glad, James, thank you! 😊
...'heavenly birthday'...I like that; it sounds sweet.
😊
I love the wild wood, but I was holding my breath for you when you were working in the bottom of that bowl!
Yeah, it was pretty close for awhile there, Wally! 😊
Hi Phil what a magnificent piece of wood its got beautiful colours. The blackberry looks lovely I bet you will make something nice with it. The juniper bowl is unique and fantastic and a masterpiece. Nice to see you back to good health Phil, happy birthday to your heavenly wife. Happy birthday to Tuffy. You take care of yourself and I can't wait for your next video. Amanda xx
Thank you so much, Amanda! 😊
Beautiful bowl with very interesting grain. I really like how you let the piece determine the final shape! Really enjoy your videos Phil 🇨🇱🤠
Thank you very much, Randy! 😄
When I look at the bowl, I see an old bucket that you would use to dip water out of a well! I like it!
Amazing! Beth said the same thing in the comment I saw just before yours, Crystal! 😄
Beautiful piece, as usual. With the two "wings" it could pass for an old fashioned wood pail.
I can say for sure that I would be minus a digit or have some mighty sore fingers turning that piece.
Thanks again for sharing Phil.
Keep on keeping on my friend.
Thank you very much, Bob! 😊
I love it! Here's an idea: get a rope - 3/4" diameter maybe, and drill 3/4" holes in the "ears" of the top of the bowl. Tie the end of the rope in the holes and make the rope into a handle.
With your suggestion and the same suggestion from several other comments, I think I'm going to do just that, Jeff! 😊
Phil, it’s funny how the wood just drives even though you have the tool in hand. Another beautiful bowl as you say in the books.
Sometimes it's not all that funny, Kevin! LOL! Thank you! 😊
But you enjoy what you do. I can tell because of the passion in your voice.
Been a while, but I've been busy with a few bowls etc. of my own. So far I find myself spending about six to eight hours per day hanging onto the door ull end of a lathe chisel. I've done a couple dozen bowls about half of which have split due to the use of green wood. I've also done a half dozen wine goblets, and a slew of ornaments and trinkets, including a coffee scoop for the Mrs. Please extend my wishes for a happy birthday to your wife. I liked the bowl, it's not your usual, but nothing wrong with that. Take care of yourself, Phil. Best wishes. Pete.
Keeping busy will keep you above ground, Pete and what more can we wish for? Keep at it and thank you! 😄
She's a beaut Phil! Juniper or as we call it, Eastern Red Cedar is notorious for cracking and hidden voids inside. Glad it held together (somewhat) for ya!
Me too! 😊
Hay Phil, not seen you in a while, it's always a pleasure to watch you turning, definitely not what I imagined when you started, it is an odd shape. I have a few of those in my bowl basket taking up room in my house, but I love them all, good to see you again buddy, my turning guru, God bless.
Thanks for stopping by, Garry! 😊
I laughed a lot when you said Tuffy was on something 🤣
I hope he did! 😊
Wood is so beautiful especially when you get done with it. Love your videos. You are so talented
You are so kind, thank you! 😊
I been away awhile, but glad to watch another video. I hope your health returned.
I'm good to go, Doug, thanks! 😊
Hi Phil. I have watched a lot of your videos and I want to thank you for adding some normalcy to my life. With all of craziness going on in the world it so refreshing to so see someone adding beauty and calmness. It means a lot to me.
Wow, thank you! I think we are all in need of a diversion now and then. 😊
Well done. This one reminds me of an old well bucket. Beautiful, Phil 💜🙏
There ya go, Beth! 😄
I was thinking same! Add a rustic looking handle through the ears and carry it around!
Beautiful piece Phil, just love the contrasting colours and Tuffies sanding tools made my head spin he must have a very inventive mind. Always entertaining watching you create.
All the best to you.
Regards Jim
Thank you, Jim! Tuffy is amazing! 😊
Beautiful bowl!!! I love to watch you work your magic!!! Happy to see you're feeling good. Have a great weekend. The 🙏🥰
Thank you so much, Mary! 😄
Looks like Jack and Jill's bucket. Very cute.
I'm going to add a rope handle to it, Karen! 😃
Now, fill the bowl with freshly popped corn, put your feet up and watch a few of "Tuffy's" videos. This bowl is perfect for doing just that, nice and deep. Great job. ;-)
There ya go, Robert, thanks! 😊
Another great piece, Phil, I really like the look of that one. Once again, I learned something from you. Thank you so much for sharing.
Thank you for watching, Fred! 😃
Really nice! I love turning Juniper I love the red colors that come out! Always amazing surprises with this wood.
Thanks, Mike! 😊
I noticed you had a bumpy ride while you turned and sanded. I too thought a couple of times those wings were going to grab you.
I love the bowl. I thought there would be more red color in the wood. You are right it is a shape that I would want to pick up and turn it to admire the character.
Thanks for the show.
Joel
I just wish you could feel it, J D. It's smooooth.... 😄
Some cracking markings on that grain, pleased you kept your fingers and thumbs with those scary wings reaching for them. Lovely finish, All the best from Lincolnshire UK
It was a bit scary for awhile there, Gary! Thank you! 😊
Very nice! Happy BD Tuffy and heavenly wishes to your wife in heaven!
Thank you kindly, Kandie! 😃
Phil you said "I wish I could keep these two things right here." You could have. You could have stopped right there and it would have been very freakin' cool. You didn't need to make the bowl wall any thinner than it was at that point, but you did anyway. A bowl can have a thick wall and be beautiful Phil, really, honest to God. The colors on this piece were amazing.
Oh, yeah, for sure! I have several pieces that have walls 1 1/2-2" thick! 😊
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop Listen to your gut. 😁
@@RevdUp.Art.Fotografer I did! 😊
Beautiful bowl...I love the color and the grain! Happy Birthday to your wife.
Thank you very much, Carol! 😊
There was a lot more Juniper when you started but now that you have cut away what doesn't look like a bowl I like the result.
Cool, thanks, Kent! 😊
Great job Phil and what a beautiful piece of nature to work with. Bless you Tuffy! Slainge.
Thank you, Slainge! 😊
Eyup young man. Another piece that told you what it wants to be, rather than the other way round. A beautiful piece none the less. It looks like its begging for a hanging frame so it can be hung with a pot plant in it. Just how I see it Phil. Well done sir.
Water bucket is what a lot of people suggested, Kev. 😊 I'm going to drill the two wings for a rope and attach it as a handle.
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop Good plan Phil.
HI Phil. That was a great video ,especially the tuffy tools you used. Anything to save the figers, It turned out well again. NIce color.
Glad you enjoyed it, Ron, thank you! 😄
Kind of looks like a bucket bowl. Love everything abut it and I even see a face with a double beauty moles. 💗
I think I'm going to attach a rope handle to it, Marge! 😊
Nice! I am seeing a cats head/face with the ears. Greetings from Scotland! 😺
Cool, thanks, Al! 😊
Beautiful as always, Phil. It’s always so interesting to see the different colors and grains that you pull out. I’m of them look like they would be smooth as butter.
Many thanks, Leona! 😊
Very nice, Phil. As always, my week has been made having watched your video.
And your comment makes mine, Hubert, thank you! 😊
As always Phil you have turned something beautiful on your lathe.
Juniper is such a lovely looking wood and the Howards gave the grain just the right "look".
Luie is a very generous person and also a lovely person who has sent me some amazing pieces of wood one of which still looks at me from time to time.
I think I have seen Gary turn Juniper a long time ago.
Great video as ever my friend.
Take care Phil and thanks for making my morning mug of tea taste even better.

Thanks for being with me to enjoy your morning tea, Huw! 😊
WOW! That’s wonderful and I love how deep it is. I hope your hands are ok! Ha ha ha Barbara

Since my mom's passing mushy is the one they got me interested in wood turning
Sorry for your loss of your mom, Roger.
Gorgeous features in that Phil, I was worried about that crack but you cracked it ok. 😂 Sometimes I confuse myself!😅
Those sanders by Tuffy are what you might call imaginative. 😄 I wonder what he came up with after this year's birthday celebrations 🍻😆
They're brilliant Tuffy, I do love to see the results of our-of-the-box thinking, hope you had a good one.🎉🍻💐
Thanks Phil, another great video for all to enjoy. 👍
Yes, Tuffy is very inventive, Jude! Thanks for watching and commenting! 😊

🙋♂️🏴 Hi Phil I always enjoy watching your video brilliant, your commentary is always informative and amusing. The finished bowl although not as you planned was great. I was worried with the crack at the bottom but it never became a problem. Thanks for all the effort put in each week.
Glad you enjoyed it, John, thank you! 😊
It's gorgeous Phil yet again. It would sit proud in any part of the house. Happy birthday Tuffy hope u had a good one. and a heavenly birthday wish to your lady Phil. God bless you.
Thanks so much, Sue! 😄
Very interesting piece of wood Phil. Turned out very nicely and has some real character to it. That 3 1/2" forstner bit was like something out of a bad fever dream 😄but really did a great job at getting you more diameter without the gouge.
It's a monster, Mark! 😊
When working on juniper wood, I enjoy its scent
Yes, a sweet scent, Samir! 😄
Another awesome Bowl Mother Nature helps you out on this one with the design thank you again Phil
She sure did, Kim, thank you! 😄
This bowl is exciting. I like the uneven sides, it reminds me of a water bucket. Mother Nature has challenged you and you have met the challenge. Great job, I just want to reach out and touch it!
I wish you could touch it, Betsy. So smooooth! 😊
A good challenge. The different woods you do are challenging because you cant see inside and things may not be predictable. But you never get shaken up. Like everything you do , I really like this piece and video.
Thank you very much, Stewart! 😄
I love it my friend, it turned out great and resembles the old well buckets 👍🏻
Thank you, Robert! 😊 Cheers!
It may have went through a few changes along the way that did not keep it from looking pretty cool. Nice job of taking control of the piece Phil and turning it into a nice interesting piece.
Cool sanding mandrels for sure.
Take care my friend,
Gary
That aluminum sanding head really gave my head a spin, Gary! But, it worked a treat, as they say! Thanks for your comment and for spending some time with me, my friend! 😄
That juniper had a mind of its own. Nice recovery though.
Thanks, Pilgrim! 😊
I love how you always let the wood determine your final products rather than fighting mother nature.
The best way, Steve. Thank you for noticing! 😊
Hi Phil I love watching your videos, it's beautiful what you do, thanks for sharing it!!!!
Thank you, Daniel! 😃
Well, it was a little bit of a problem child at the start around that top edge, but you are never one to give in without a fight &, yet again, you won the battle. Seriously, it is a pity that the sap wood appears a little short in the strength department but the heart wood is worth working into. It is a beautiful bowl in the end & the grain in the heart wood is absolutely beautiful. Love the Feed & Wax finish, as always. Thanks for sharing Phil & stay well. Cheers, Don from South Aust.
I think the Feed & Wax was the perfect finish for this piece, Don. So soft and smooth! 😊
Another one in the books. Good job with a sometimes belligerent wood.
Indeed! Thanks, Garth! 😄
Very cool Phil! I love it, and I really love the smell of juniper! Cheers, Rick
Yes, a nice sweet aroma, Rick! 😊
Beautiful Bowl. When I get those finger-snapping wings on Live Edge I put a piece of yellow masking tape on the tool rest to remind me not to go past it with my fingers.
Sounds great, John! 😊

What a beautiful water pail
That's five water pails, Lyle, per the comments! 😄
Love the shape, colors and grain…soooo nice.
Cool, thank you, Stephanie! 😊
Looks so beautiful. It was worth the work that went into it. Tuffy's sanders are very inventive and fun to see.
Yeah, he is an inventive guy, Judith. Thank you! 😄
Great work. I learned to turn using a juniper tree that was given to me. Great turning wood to learn with. The juniper here doesn’t have the dark heart wood like your piece did. That sure made the piece look beautiful. When you put the tenon in the bottom I was worried it would not hold. But I knew you turned gentle enough that if anyone could make it hold you could. Again great work and thank you so much for sharing.
Thank you for the info about Juniper. It's interesting how woods differ around the country and the world. 😊
Happy heavenly birthday to your lovely wife. I remember your love for her every time I watch your videos. I think about your video tribute often. I aspire to find a love like that. Keep being a bright light for so many of us, Phil. Thank you for showing the world the beauty of true love and deep commitment
This is beautiful, thank you so much for your kind comment! 😊
Phil, I'm not sure how you got there either. I really didn't know where you where going from the start with this bowl. I really like how it turned out. Love the grain.
Cool, thank you, Russ! 😄
A difficult looking piece, but your skill pulled out a great looking bowl, the shape reminded me of the old fashioned wooden pails. Look forward to seeing that Blackberry/Cherry being turned.
Thank you, Alan! I think that makes five pail comments! Maybe I should re-title the video? 😄
No bark is interesting too. ❤❤❤
Yeah, I guess it can be, Connie. Thank you! 😊
Lovely work on one of my favorite woods, (availabel here in Arizona with little effort beyond a brief walk with a battery chainsaw). I would have liked a hollow form with the interesting cavities showing through. The wood had its own necessity.
Thanks, Lewis! 😊
I enjoy them thank you God bless you and your wife

Tuffy must've been on something, lol haha.
Too funny.
