While you are correct about the miter joints, I think there is a benefit to this "flaw" (which I don't believe there is). It directs the eye to the the center from all four corners which, aesthetically, is pleasing to the eye. It might be over kill for this kind of project but dovetail joints are very strong and can correct for any imperfections when the two pieces of wood come together. I like your creativity.
Mitered finger/box joints rather than dovetails are easier to cut on a bandsaw, because there's only one angled cut for the mitre joint. Box joints are just a series of interlocking straight tenons, and are easy to mark out and cut. Accuracy comes with practice. Or Mike could buy a box joint jig and used a router. Not as fast though, and investing in that might not be productive unless he's going to make a lot of box joints.
I love this bowl. The idea is so fun and interesting. I hope you try some more of these maze bowls. I would have liked it a little deeper but that’s just me. It’s still nice. 😊❤
I’ve only thought to glue together pieces like this to make a blank. This is a great option! The band saw has its best usages. Making mitered frames is not one of them. Your new table saw will do the trick brilliantly. Great work Mike! I love it! Cheers! Joe CA
Mike, thanks for the bowl. I think sometimes that when you mix all of the different colors in the resin, you use too many and the colors get muddy and there is not enough contrast in the two different pots.
Beautiful bowl, I actually quite like the joints in the wood. It almost looks like you just glued 4 triangles together and it made the maze, which is a fun thought
I have just happened upon your channel, as a wannabe turner I've had a browse around especially at the videos you have produced. I am amazed at what you produce, your presentation, and all of the information and contacts you include in the videos. Absolutely exceptional is all I can say, and that's an understatement. Kind regards, Tony.👍
Definitely a freshly unique idea. Gives me some ideas on how to use up some of my over accumulating scraps. If you give it another go, you can pour a top track layer using Colored UV resin and either routed grooves or temporary dams to color in the winning route. Also, the miter saw may give more accurate cuts than the bandsaw if you have one. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I am glad you went for the mitres. That is a beautiful piece. I am just amazed (ha ha) at how you come up with the colours and glitter for the resin. Sapele is not easy to turn, but it really looks the part here. Your mitres are way better than mine!
What an aMAZEing project! No really, I love it - everyone has those scraps that they didn’t know what to do with, and I think I have some that would work out like this somewhat wonderfully. I have been turning sapele wands lately and have loved turning it.
Super cool concept! For the joints, just get some clamps -- how we did our boxes in highschool woodshop class, and it worked just fine. Clamping makes the wood look like it simply grew at 90° angles. Such a great idea, and I love that you kept the piece nice and thick. Very effective!😊
A very interesting project. Very well done. I think the two epoxy mixes would stand out more if one was light and the other dark, these ended up both being dark. Nice job on the mold, no leaks which is always a big relief. Dave.
Hello Mike. This was, for me, a delightful memory from my childhood - a long time ago! My father was a a good amateur carpenter. Each Christmas he would make me a little wooden puzzle as a gift to keep me occupied while he and my mother got the celebration going. I am now wondering what happened to them all. But I still have a little box that, as a child, had a secret way of opening, which I found fascinating. Have a good week and, as always, I am looking forward to your next piece of art.
I have never watched a full almost 30 minute ad but for this i was there for it and depending on which point of entry u take from the start of the maze it can take 2 seconds up to about 4 seconds but then again with me i start mazes from the inside and go out which is 2 to 3 seconds on a consecutive running working out both paths very fun work u did there sir salute to u o7

BEST original concept I,ve seen in ages...reminds me of those little plastic maze games with the ball bearingʻ we had as kids and gets me thinking about a modification to your design with the wooren maze set into a shallow pour, ball bearing added , acetate sheet on top, further shallow poor on top and then turned.... A 3d maze bowl puzzle.... wonder if it would work... Thanks for sharing .
What a fun project, very creative. This is one i will give a go myself. I may try to make the colors more contrasting and cut a puck lite into the bottom. Thanks for the inspiration.
A lovely piece, well executed. I actual like the defined joins. I would love to see a similar design with a hex centre set in a circle with a little deeper dish.
Far out, man! This is very cool Michael. What a nice way to end Tuesday, June 25, 2024. If I were to try and make a maze, I'd end up with a sick headache. LOL!
I love the concept! I watch a fair amount of turning videos and this is the first maze I've seen. I don't know if I have the patience for all the preliminary work on a project like this, great job!
Wow! This is stunning Mike, so different but beautiful. I also love how the joints draw the eye in to the centre as one other fan commented. Hard to see the true contrasting colours of the resin on here, so I can imagine it is even better in person. Once again you have outdone yourself in your creativity and in entertaining us. Thank you Mike 🤗
Hi Mike, it’s been a few weeks since I’ve commented on any of your post as I’ve been a little bit of colour. This is one of those that you pulled out of the bag again you keep on doing it wonderful wonderful peace where you get the ideas from I don’t know, however it truly is incredible. I just love you work even though I haven’t commented I’ve been watching so keep up the good work. don’t worry about your 45° cuts nothing in this world is perfect and yours is handmade. If it came off of production line you’d expect it to look like that it was perfect.
Another really cool project. I can see one very similar, only less opaqueness in the resin so light can shine through, and hanging it in a window. Sort of a wooden stained glass, rather than leaded stained glass.
Dont be so hard on yourself. The end result is pretty damn great and would look on most peoples sideboards etc. A great little Bowl, Platter. Well done Mike. Cheers
Hi Mike, Don’t be too hard on yourself! Those joints give ‘the draw of the eye’ effect perfectly, as though they were intended to be a feature. The platter bowl Looks fantastic. The chatoyant effect of that wood is gorgeous. Thanks for sharing another masterpiece ❤😊
Ooh now that’s a fun little dish/bowl It’s going to attract a lot of conversations in situ - late to watch this wk was on Mamgu duty at the park with a 4yr old 😂

Agreed. They look like a feature in the final piece!
Thanks so much William, really appreciate your input 👍
I thought the same - the diagonals draw the eye nicely. They may even be called aMAZEing...

Brilliant, Mike. Love how you show your planning train of thought for each project so we can all learn from it. Thanks.
