While you are correct about the miter joints, I think there is a benefit to this "flaw" (which I don't believe there is). It directs the eye to the the center from all four corners which, aesthetically, is pleasing to the eye. It might be over kill for this kind of project but dovetail joints are very strong and can correct for any imperfections when the two pieces of wood come together. I like your creativity.
Agreed. They look like a feature in the final piece!
Thanks so much William, really appreciate your input 👍
I thought the same - the diagonals draw the eye nicely. They may even be called aMAZEing...
@@flatflo Haha thanks 😃
Mitered finger/box joints rather than dovetails are easier to cut on a bandsaw, because there's only one angled cut for the mitre joint. Box joints are just a series of interlocking straight tenons, and are easy to mark out and cut. Accuracy comes with practice. Or Mike could buy a box joint jig and used a router. Not as fast though, and investing in that might not be productive unless he's going to make a lot of box joints.
Oh wow!! Now that is a rather stunning bowl. I've not seen anything like it. Amazing work! :)
Thanks, I do try to be original 😁
Nice idea Mike! 👍
Thanks 😀
A thing of beauty!!
Thanks 😊
I've said before, your head must be a library full of ideas. Long may it continue.
Haha thanks, I have so many in there 😂
Brilliant, Mike. Love how you show your planning train of thought for each project so we can all learn from it. Thanks.
Thanks Peter, I just want to inspire people to have a go 😄
Mike, thanks for the bowl. I think sometimes that when you mix all of the different colors in the resin, you use too many and the colors get muddy and there is not enough contrast in the two different pots.
That looks nice. Interesting design. Well done.
Thank you very much! 😊
@10:28 - "I really want to do it so I'm going to do it."
You cannot chain Mike Holton to society's rules, man. He's a lone wolf who has to run free and to blazes with anyone who tries to hold him back.
In all seriousness - well done, Mike. This is a really cool-looking piece.
Haha thanks Tom, I've saved a copy of your comment to use on my new website, made me laugh lol
At the risk of a huge groan, that's aMAZEing!
Haha thanks 😂
Great bowl Mike, you really puzzled your way thru this one, I think a thinner version would work well also
I think so too! Thanks Dale ☺️
OMG! This bowl is a-maze-ing!!!! What an unique idea!
Thanks Kim, glad you like it 😃
Hello Mike. This was, for me, a delightful memory from my childhood - a long time ago! My father was a a good amateur carpenter. Each Christmas he would make me a little wooden puzzle as a gift to keep me occupied while he and my mother got the celebration going. I am now wondering what happened to them all. But I still have a little box that, as a child, had a secret way of opening, which I found fascinating.
Have a good week and, as always, I am looking forward to your next piece of art.
Thanks for sharing Angela, that is a beautiful memory! 😃
What a creative dish/bowl/puzzle!!! Love it, Mike! 😊
Thanks so much Andrea 😁
this is very cool, and we love shots from all angles!! have a great week!
Thanks Dee, glad you like the extra camera 😁
Very interesting project.
Thanks 😀
You could also do one without the dots and call it a zen garden. That’s what it reminds me of. Very nice.
Thanks, that's a nice idea 🙂
THE PERSON WHO INVENTED THICK LEATHER GLOVES DROPPED OUT OF PRESCHOOL!!
I have no idea what this means
Brilliant Mike, nice job. A bit too complicated for myself presently me thinks 🙄. Making the squares without 'mazing' it is an option for me though 👍🏴
Cool, if you can make squares then rotate each one a little and I think it could give a cool effect 😀
Goid morning Mike! Cheryl from Jacksonville FL here! I would love a bowl like that and I would display my crystal clusters in it! AWESOME❤😂🎉
Good morning! And thanks, that would look cool 😊
Just WOW!!!!
Your creativity is amazing Mike!
Beautiful piece of work/art.
Thank you very much! 😊
Now I like that. Here’s me telling folk I turn square things round. There’s you turning square things square 🤷🏻♂️Not much difference in the mixed resin colours mind x
Thanks Michael, I did mess up with the resin lol 😃
Good sir.......I am amazed by every video you post
The amount of skill and craftsmanship just blow me away
Second to none
Thanks so much David 😃
Super cool concept! For the joints, just get some clamps -- how we did our boxes in highschool woodshop class, and it worked just fine. Clamping makes the wood look like it simply grew at 90° angles. Such a great idea, and I love that you kept the piece nice and thick. Very effective!😊
Thanks Shelley, not sure clamps would have helped these joints lol 😀
A very attractive & creative bowl Mike. I do love your desire to push yourself beyond your perceived comfort zone. Unlike the very good comment below, I believe your bowl, from my Art Teaching background, would have been better served if your initial squares of Sapele had been firmly clamped before cutting the 'insertions'. I find that the gaps are an intrusion that detracts from the visual experience you set out to achieve. All that said from my artistic background, I do love the bowl that you have created. Lots of interesting tips throughout the project. Cheers, Don from South Australia.
Thanks so much as always Don, all the best, Mike 😀
Thanks Mike, another interesting project. I've not used resin for bowls, approx. how much did the resin cost for this bowl? PS: I looked at your affiliate link for JSP on amazon and they're out of stock.
Thanks Simon, there is probably about £15-£20 worth of resin in there. JSP send me the links to use. if you search for the product name you will find other people with stock. All the best, Mike
Front 1 second, back 2 seconds.
This is mind-blowing, mostly just watching as you turned it. The optical illusions of the round square and the maze inside changing shape is one of my favorite optical illusions.
Another channel that uses resin that I watch has a round plate with levels on it they use to make sure the resin is level before they put the whole thing in the pressure pot. That channel is "Even and Katlin". I have no idea when they made it but you might be able to ask them.
Having things level helps but because you are going to be turning it anyway you could just overfill your mold?
Anyway this piece is brilliant. Have you thought of making bowls/platters with different game settings? Checkers, backgammon, Go, etc. That would be fun.
Cheers!
That would be great, love the game board idea, thanks 👍I had better write it down fast lol 😁
Hi Mike, you always find something to amaze everyone, This did really turn out to be a maze of colour and a perfect way to use the Sapele of cuts. Next time you will have to add some lights or would that be going to far? Nice finishing with your test pastes which are working great. Thanks for the video looking forward to the next amazing project ( yes you can sigh )⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Thank you so much Roy😀
How do you go about disposing of mixed wood and resin shavings? I'd imagine the resin shavings make the wood shavings much less compostable.
I have to just throw them away unfortunately. Where possible I try to separate but not easy
Thanks, as always. Awesome work. Next, maybe a circular maze :-) The resin pour may also be interesting ...
Thanks, I have a good idea how to do it but it will not be easy 😂
Another great piece Mike.
How do you think it would have looked like if you didn’t 45 the corners and just butted them up. Do you think you would have gotten the pie/triangle effect?
Not you would not have, the poor joints seem to have given it more appeal! 😃
Very clever! The joints, though not up to guild standards, do add to the piece. You Brit you, so you had your summer on that day. 🤣🤣🤣 I sincerely hope you have another summer before September.
Haha thanks Lynette, we have had three nice days in a row 😄
What an aMAZEing project! No really, I love it - everyone has those scraps that they didn’t know what to do with, and I think I have some that would work out like this somewhat wonderfully.
I have been turning sapele wands lately and have loved turning it.
Thanks, It's really nice to turn 😁
Definitely a freshly unique idea. Gives me some ideas on how to use up some of my over accumulating scraps. If you give it another go, you can pour a top track layer using Colored UV resin and either routed grooves or temporary dams to color in the winning route. Also, the miter saw may give more accurate cuts than the bandsaw if you have one. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thanks for the ideas. I've just got hold of a table saw which will do the job great 👍
Hi Mike, it’s been a few weeks since I’ve commented on any of your post as I’ve been a little bit of colour. This is one of those that you pulled out of the bag again you keep on doing it wonderful wonderful peace where you get the ideas from I don’t know, however it truly is incredible. I just love you work even though I haven’t commented I’ve been watching so keep up the good work. don’t worry about your 45° cuts nothing in this world is perfect and yours is handmade. If it came off of production line you’d expect it to look like that it was perfect.
Thanks so much Steve, sorry to hear you have not been well. All the best, Mike 😀
Interesting idea Mike. I think I would have given the dish a little more curve. On both sides. Top and bottom. Thanks for the video. I enjoy your videos and your work.
Thanks Paul, you may be right ☺️
That looks fantastic Mike! If you made thinner versions they would make very attractive wall hangings! 👍
That would be cool! Thanks Steve 😀
Beautiful. An intriguing puzzle and decor in one. How many do you think will find themselves absently tracing the maze? 🤔
Hopefully a few 😁
I’ve only thought to glue together pieces like this to make a blank. This is a great option! The band saw has its best usages. Making mitered frames is not one of them. Your new table saw will do the trick brilliantly. Great work Mike! I love it! Cheers! Joe CA
Thanks so much Joe, I'm looking forward to trying this again 😃
You have such a creative streak. A great bowl, and some of the joins were good! I loved the tape technique. Really aMAZEing
Thanks Rachel, the outside joints were the best lol
I have just happened upon your channel, as a wannabe turner I've had a browse around especially at the videos you have produced. I am amazed at what you produce, your presentation, and all of the information and contacts you include in the videos. Absolutely exceptional is all I can say, and that's an understatement. Kind regards, Tony.👍
Welcome aboard and thanks Tony, if you ever have a question please let me know..all the best, Mike
Thank you for sharing your passion with us , this project is really fantastic , complexe sure but the result is amazing .Well done.
Thank you very much Joe ☺️
Lovely idea, I now have the onerous task of finding something similar for sale as I need one of these bowls for my desk! ;-)
I suggest simplicity when it comes to mixing the resins. Accurately measure the amount/weight of colour additives in each batch and try to keep them evenly matched. I would also go for a strong contrast in colours to emphasise the flow.
Thanks so much and for the tip! Good luck finding one. If you struggle I may just be making another 🙂
Mike that's another stunning piece enjoyed your thought process on this one, well done buddy,
Cheers from will 👍🙂
Thanks Will, I've just had a table saw delivered so hopefully any more attempts will be better lol 😀. Still not had time to post your wood, will do it very soon I promise.
I love this piece. I would’ve never thought to make a bowl like this. The colors are fantastic and it’s very unique. Keep coming up with these new ideas for different type of bowls. Thanks for the videos.
Thank you! Cheers Robert ☺️
Definitely a unique project. A table saw or miter saw would have definitely gotten you better joinery, but I think that the diagonal lines in the joints add to the appeal of the piece. Folks with band saws tend to have different blades for cutting blanks versus resawing or anything needing straight lines. Over time, cutting blanks causes the teeth to deflect, leaving that blade only good for blanks or curved lines.
Thanks, I have just taken delivery of a nice table saw and a fine toothed blade. Next time will be easier 😊
A very interesting project. Very well done.
I think the two epoxy mixes would stand out more if one was light and the other dark, these ended up both being dark. Nice job on the mold, no leaks which is always a big relief.
Dave.
Thanks Dave, I did make a mistake with the resin but will do better next time 😁
I love the concept! I watch a fair amount of turning videos and this is the first maze I've seen. I don't know if I have the patience for all the preliminary work on a project like this, great job!
Glad you enjoyed it Mark, the preliminary work did take a while but I actually like doing it 😀
Like this one. Looks great. The miters will improve with practice. I think yellow dots, a ghost an a packman would have made this hilarious.
Haha I do intend to make a pacman maze at some point 😜
Another fun and unique project. Well done. Thanks for sharing and again walking us through the planning process.
You're welcome Joyce, I really enjoyed this one 😁
Fantastic ideation, brilliantly executed. Always a pleasure to watch your work.
Thank you very much Barry 😊
Still the best clamps to support mitre joints while curing are these c-shaped springs which are placed with special pliers - in my honest opinion. And I think a bandsaw is not precise enough to cut the 45-degree-angles. A circular bench saw will give better results.
You are right but I don't even think clamps would have helped these joints lol 😃
What a fun project, I love it!! I think it came out amazing. Here’s a smooch for Hooch 😘😘
Thanks Amie, Hooch will be smooched 😁
He Mike!😅
Try a round maze! Very difficult to make, but totally worth the effort.
Love to see you try new things❤
Thanks, I have been thinking about it while I was working on this idea. I have a way to do it but will need a little while for the full idea to come together 😄
Hi Mike, this is the 1st of your video's I have watched. Very interesting and the final result is amazing!!
Thanks and welcome, glad you enjoyed it 😁
You keep making pieces that move to the top of my favorites list. This is wonderfully versatile and a fantastic pattern. I'd pay good money for this piece of art. Love it!!
Thanks so much Cynthia, I'm going to try to make a round maze soon 😃
Looks great. Wouldn’t worry about the mitre joints. Could you have “dished” the other side and made it reversible?
Thanks, I did consider that 😁
What a fun project, very creative. This is one i will give a go myself. I may try to make the colors more contrasting and cut a puck lite into the bottom. Thanks for the inspiration.
Great idea 😀
Looked like a checkerboard when it was spinning. Square joint with brad nails would work better just keep them low so you don't cut into them
I did actually consider that before I started 😃
That certainly is one of the more interesting pieces I've seen you make! And all the while I was thinking "how is he going to lower the resin so you can roll a ball through the maze?" but it's not that kind of a maze, is it. :D
Haha no it's not, but I am working on a few ideas to do something like that 😄
Love it Mike. Very cool concept. Definitely think needs a bit more contrast between the resin.
I think your miters are fine. The hairlines focus the eye to the center and increase the perceived depth of the bowl. Something the maze pattern subdues.
Thanks, they look way better than I could have hoped at the start 😀
Dont be so hard on yourself. The end result is pretty damn great and would look on most peoples sideboards etc. A great little Bowl, Platter. Well done Mike. Cheers
Thanks so much Peter 😃
Wow, Mike
what a remarkable idea. It looks fantastic. I like the contrast of the wood and the darker colours of the resin. Thank you for sharing
You are very welcome 😁
That was an excellent project Mike. I have to agree with some of the other commenters where, while your miters/mitres are not up to fine cabinetry standards, for this project, they work nicely to direct your eye into the center of the maze/bowl.
Thanks so much Mark 😁

Thanks so much Mark 😊
I love this bowl. The idea is so fun and interesting. I hope you try some more of these maze bowls. I would have liked it a little deeper but that’s just me. It’s still nice. 😊❤
Thanks Deborah, a few people have asked for a round maze so I think that will be next 😁
Beautiful bowl, I actually quite like the joints in the wood. It almost looks like you just glued 4 triangles together and it made the maze, which is a fun thought
That is a fun thought! 😀
Very clever. Another fantastic piece of work. Love all your videos. So relaxing to watch after a hard day at work.
Thank you so much Jonathan 😀
Awesome stuff. Little room for improvement on your jointing but gives it great character. How did you remove the tenant on the underside?
Thanks James, I just used a jam chuck 😁
Far out, man! This is very cool Michael. What a nice way to end Tuesday, June 25, 2024. If I were to try and make a maze, I'd end up with a sick headache. LOL!
Haha thanks my friend, I did enjoy making this one and no headache lol 😃
Forgive the pun , its amazing , what patience that must have taken hours and hours , its fantastic and inspiring 👏👏👏👏👏
Thanks Vini, it did take a while to make and a fair amount of preparation, worth it though 😊
Genius idea. Very original, nobody else would even consider this . Brilliant. Ps get yourself a miter saw.
Thanks John, on the last day of filming a nice table saw arrived 😃
You may not be super happy with your joints but I'm still impressed that you managed to do something that fits together that well on a band saw. Your daughter bested my maze solve time by a few seconds.
Thanks Ben, I think she got lucky with her first time lol 😃
Hi I like the maze idea but if I get a chance and the money I'd like to do all the squares and a lighter colour resin. But that's my choice that's why I like this hobby.
Thanks, lighter wood would look great, give it a go 😊
The maze bowl looks great. I admire your confidence when using resin.
Thank you very much! 😃
Nice job Mike. I assume you don't have a table saw as that would have made the cutting a lot easier. Thanks for another great video.
Thanks Mark, my new table saw arrived on the last day of filming 😃
It looks amazing. The only improvement I would like to see would be more transparent color.
Thanks so much 😃
Your creativity just amazes me. So glad I found your channel.
Thank you so much Sylvia 😀
Another fun project. How do you come up with these ideas? Thank you very much for taking us on this journey.
You are so welcome! I have a very strange imagination 😂
This turned out beautifully, you’ve given me a few ideas for my own projects!
Excellent! Have fun 😁
Wow! I think this is my favourite piece ever!! I absolutely love this!! I also actually like the look of the joints 😃
Thank you so much Donna lol 😃
i agree with dale, id like to see one with less depth, but it might easily break on the lathe? or break if accidentally dropped. its lovely either way you cut/lathe it . well done yet again Mike, you never disappoint 🙂
Thanks so much 😊
Hi Mike, very good crafting and nice peace of art. But I love the more natural bowls more.
Thanks so much, I will always make natural bowls 😀
Just A-maze-ing! Challenge - figure out how to put a hollow layer in the middle of lighter resin layers with a ball bearing in there. Then you have a toy also. 😉
I know JB I have been wracking my brain for days thinking about the best way to do it 😃
Very cool! Yet another fun project, thoroughly enjoyed watching!
Thanks so much 😃
Brilliant work. This really inspires me to think out the box. Thanks for all your videos.
You're welcome Linda 😁
Some clamping pressure should tighten up the joints. Looks great.
Thanks but they were not even close 😂
That's a cool idea, Mike. If you think your miter joints are bad, you should se mine.
Haha thanks Shawn 😀
Another really cool project. I can see one very similar, only less opaqueness in the resin so light can shine through, and hanging it in a window. Sort of a wooden stained glass, rather than leaded stained glass.
Thanks that's a good idea 🙂
Very beautiful. The joints make it look even better and pull your eye to the middle. Another awesome job.
Thank you very much! 😊
A delightful and beautiful conversation piece!💚🤗
Thanks Aleta, the kids love it 😀
That is fabulous Mike 😊 super clever 👏 l love it & the joints actually add to the maze pattern ❤
Thanks so much Karen 😃
It's really a beautiful conversation piece, I really like this piece Mike
Thanks so much 😊
Interesting project! I love it. I was surprised you left it as thick as you did, but it works.
Dumb question: what is the writing tool that you use in this? To mark the tenon, for instance? I've seen those in various maker videos, but don't recognize it. Thanks!
Thanks, they are just acrylic marker pens I buy cheap from China 😃
That's really nice. You should try doing a round dart board. ❤❤❤😊😊
Wow that's a great idea 😀
Another lovely woodturning project, Mike!
Thank you! Cheers! 😃
Ooh now that’s a fun little dish/bowl
It’s going to attract a lot of conversations in situ - late to watch this wk was on Mamgu duty at the park with a 4yr old 😂
Haha thanks 😂
Fantastic project. I kind of like that the corners aren’t perfect. That allowed for the resin to go into those cracks. Looks great.
Thanks Doug, it looks better than I had hoped 😄
I saw the thumbnail and I thought, “How the hell can you ‘turn’ those into a maze?!!”
Haha thanks 😃
Very interesting idea Mike, and nicely done. Enjoy watching your creativity in these videos.
Thank you very much! 😃
