I'm so glad that you show all the mistakes that happen when working with resins and using the jaws. I've had several pieces that exploded when coming off the jaws that were not salvageable. A beautiful piece of work. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks, these things can happen to all of us and I want to show the full journey I'm on the good and the bad, we can all learn from both, all the best, Mike
Like so many, my heart skipped a beat and I yelled NOOOO. Well, you had me at that. So happy to see that the bowl survived and it came out so beautiful.
Oh my! My heart dropped when the bowl came loose and went flying!😢 I am so glad it stayed in one piece! What a wonderful job showcasing the beauty of that burl! The resin looks great and adds to the charm of the piece❤
Thanks so much Mary, my heart stopped as well when it came clattering off. All good now and ready to do it all again with something else 😂, all the best and take care, Mike
Mike, my eyes are still wet with tears for you; firstly sharing your pain, and then your joy! I sat down at the laptop for a bit of relaxation, your video popped up; great I thought, 30 minutes with Mike is just what I need right now, and then ... wow, what a rollercoaster that was! You are a star Sir; thank you for sharing so much of your self with us .. and what a great bowl to show for it!!
Thanks David, it started out as a 45 minute video but I managed to get it down for everyone's sake. Like you said it was a bit of a rollercoaster, initially I had hoped to have had that project all wrapped up in 24 hours, somethings things do not go to plan 😀
Great save! I have burst into tears on more than one occasion after having one of mine self destruct at the finish line. Was a cherry wine glass for my wife.. had it at the buffer and just got a catch.. it shattered like fine crystal... your story had a much happier ending... thank you for not hiding the flaws, and trials but sharing it with us like a buddy sitting down in the shop! Cheers!
Glad you appreciated the journey Anthony, such a shame about your wife's wine glass, it's never nice to loose something on the hone straight. I never try and hide issues, there is no point, if I have a problem or make a mistake I want people to learn from it. Life is not perfect. All the best, Mike
Thanks Maria, the wood did have a few issues but I know it would be worth it, had I known all that would happen I think I would still have had a go, I learned a lot. All the best, Mike
I actually screamed out "oh no"! 😢 I invisioned the worst. I was so unbelievably happy for you when the bowl wasn't damaged except for one teeny, tiny little battle scar.❤ It's a Beautiful piece ❤
To see the bowl go flying at that late stage I really felt for you. So glad to see all ended up well for you.Brilliant piece of work keep up with the videos.
Just watched this 5 months late but definitely worth it. Sir you definitely have a flair for the dramatic and I always enjoy watching you work. The bowl turned out beautifully despite the accident please never stop what you're doing 🙏
With the resin it still looked great, really fantastic to keep with it... I'm very happy to see how many videos I've missed. It is a strange relaxation, but it works. To me it is art unfolding in a strange manner.
I dont think you were the only one who’s heart skiped a beat. Beautiful wood, I really like wood and the smell of it. When our children was small we lived in a wooded area and my ex had to go to the forest to cut lumber for heating up the house. The smell was just amasing
That burl has to be cursed. I think my heart skipped a beat seeing this beautiful bowl go flying. Great way to save that gorgeous piece of wood!!! Well done!
Oh my god, I nearly died with shock when the bowl was thrown off the jaws. Tho not a woodworker I am a modeller and my heart sank thinking of all the hours and effort put in creating that piece. but when you bought it back into view again I gave a big sigh of relief. Well done, a beautiful piece. Congratulations.
@@MikeHolton Hi Mike, I started quite young with a model of a spitfire (a plastic kit) and as I got older started building balsa gliders. The most disappointing time was when building a Minimoa a 4ft scale model, took me about two months to build freehand from a set of plans. Anyway I covered it with tissue and doped it (showing my age now) I remember I had built it with a de-thermaliser in the tail activated with a slow fuse (cord soaked in saltpetre). I lived in Yorkshire at the time and finally plucked up the courage to take it to the sand dunes and give it the first flight, nice gentle onshore breeze, put a small amount of rudder to make it return to me and then set the de-thermaliser. I gently pushed it into the wind and watched it rise into the air and slowly lift up into the air. As it moved away from me it headed out over the sands and continued to rise. First big mistake, the tide was in. Oh crap! I’d wasn’t turning. It flew perfectly straight into wind and slowly flew out to sea I watched helplessly as it made a perfectly good landing on the waves about half a mile out only to be smashed up by the first breaking wave. I car still feel the disappointment after all the hard work I had put in building covering and doping the model. I now build flying wings with radio control and like the summer evenings just flying them in lazy circles with the gulls over the cliffs near home. I have 5 wings in various stages of construction and sizes and like to experiment with the scratch building, some work some don’t much like your wood turning on the lathe though your skills are far above mine. All the best for the future.
@@Reh8111 Hi Terence, thanks so much for getting back to me. All sounds amazing and I feel your pain for the loss of your Minimoa, that sounds like something that would happen to me. I remember having to use dope on a couple of planes I built as a kid. Both my parents are from Yorkshire (Sheffield) and I love taking trips down the coast to Whitby and further down. So many happy memories
Wow, that was a roller coaster ride! The middle bit where the black plastic was sticking everywhere compared to the finished project is a good reminder that art tends to have an ugly stage. You just have to keep going and eventually it will be beautiful! I forget that sometimes and abandon projects halfway through, so this was a good reminder to keep on keeping on. Also I audibly gasped when it went flying at the end there. I don't think my heart could have taken it if I was in that room!
You are so right about plowing on. When I started I found it hard to finish a brown, I would always make a mistake or something that stopped me. But one day I made the decision to finish no matter what and I learned a lot on how to fix mistakes and get better at avoiding them. All the best, Mike 🙂
Oh My God Mike - I had been holding my breath through this one, right from the very beginning. I thought at one point, maybe it was going to separate from the sacrificial stock you glued to the base, so when you got through that phase, I relaxed a little bit and thought you were home safe. When it leapt off the lathe toward the very end of the video, I nearly fell off my seat! I'm so glad it didn't get destroyed mate. It turned out really well in the end - and I do appreciate that you share all your trials and adventures, as well as your creative process (with all of of us watching from home). One of the best turners on YT.
Oh my gosh!! It's beautiful! When it was chipping on the back, I thought it wasn't going to work at all; given the title. I love that it lets the light through.
Oh my! I have seen other turners have bowls fly off and it is heartbreaking. I am SO glad that it did nit shatter or chip :) PHEW! Thank you again or amazing and heartfelt content, and a truly beauty of a bowl.

Been there. Done that. Hate when it happens. You have infinitely more turning experience than I do, but I've found that when finishing bottoms with the Cole jaws, limiting myself to pull cuts only has greatly reduced the incidence of flying bowl syndrome. As a matter of fact, I don't think I've lost one since I came to this realization. Love your work and have learned a lot from you. Thanks.
Ever so pleased the bowl survived! Regarding that piece of burl and not knowing hardly anything about burl, I would have simply thrown it away for fear it was some horribly diseased thing that would kill us all if burned in the fireplace! What a hideous thing! Needless to say how amazed I was to see how beautifully it turned out. Using the resin was a great way to save the bowl, saving you from only having enough turnable wood to make only a child sized thimble!
Haha thanks Mary, this one was a challenge but we got there in the end, I turned the other half of this wood a while ago and it eventually came out nice, not great wood but we managed. All the best, Mike
Well, you certainly proved that this video is " just for entertainment"!!!In the best tradition of Steven King, you told in the title what would happen, disaster did happen - over and over again. So many times I thought you had THE heartbreaking event referred to in the title that I wasn't ready and was utterly surprised at the last final and greatest heartbreak. You're a master of story telling as well as turning. Thanks for the show.
Thanks Gerard, I would have loved for this to have had a different title like 'an utter success or 'a perfect turning' but instead it was just another normal day at the office 😀. All the best, Mike
I've just discovered your channel a few days ago and it's absolutely amazing. A lot of wood turning channels can show amazing works of creativity but at the same time come across as slightly dry and mechanical. With your videos having live commentary they really stand out as we get to hear your creative and technical journey. Keep up the good work!
Negative rake cutters are a must when turning "chippy" plastics or resins! 🤣 Had my heart in my throat when it flew out of the flat jaws! So glad the damage was so minor! 😱😊
I’m a turner also and when it shot off the lathe I could have cried for you,it amazes me just how much resin that was left on the finished piece I use epoxy on most of my projects but I use plastic mixing bowls to make the initial shape this would save you a tonne of time and money as I know only too well the cost of epoxy resin, any way it was a super result well done
Hi Dave, I did consider a plastic bowl but the voids inside would not have filled with resign as the air would not have escaped. I was doing my nest to save on the resin used with the bag idea which failed but I did learn a few things for next time. All the best and thanks, Mike
Flipping heck Mike, my heart sank when your bowl went flying near the end. I felt your pain. Didn't it turn out well though! Well worth all the effort and you'll have a tale to tell the grandkids one day 😉
@Mike Holton - hand made crafts If it's any consolation Mike, exactly the same thing happened to me last week when I was attempting to finish the foot on a small bowl. I was using the same record jaws too 🤫
Found your channel just now, looking for inspiration for a piece of taxus. Found it and stumbled upon this vid. My first tip is for casting resin: wood will flow on resin, so any slack will make resin sink to the bottom and you'll have to refill. Wind the plastic liner with tape, and/or put a weight on the wood keeping it down. Second tip: if there is enough material there, use it for your tenon. I hate the Cole chuck, so third and last tip: turn a block of sparewood to a piece that fits into your bowl. Keep it in the 4clawchuck, put your bowl around it (with a piece of cloth or package foil between) and use the tailstock to secure it until the utter last moment. The final knob you can remove with a chisel. Thanks for your vids, I'm a subscriber now!
So I just found this one going through some of your previous videos Mike and when the bowl came off the cold jaws it was like a DOH!! that echoed round the world. It was a big relief to see the bowl was still intact. The end result is very cool indeed. Cheers Deno.
The suspense after the fly off was...i must say ...very heartbreaking! I was glad Tho at the end of this suspenseful movie that the ending was great. A little scratch was the least thing that could've happened. I imagined two half cylindrical pieces. Beautiful bowl and congratulations!
Haha sorry about the dramatics but that is how it felt at the time. I did not have the courage to crawl under my lathe to retrieve it in fear of what I would find. So glad it was ok, thanks for watching and thanks so much for your support
Whew! Brother Mike, you definitely have some patience! I've had a few pieces fly out of the jaws myself. And, I've had a few choice words when it happened. Glad you stuck with it and made another beautiful bowl !

Wowza, very nice save, darn near jumped out of my seat
Haha, a few people have mentioned doing similar 😂
Burl is always so lovely! Great choice on the pearl look. Glad it survived it's trip off the lathe. lol
Haha me too, many thanks, Mike 😃
i've never tried resin , after watching this im inspired to give it a go , another fantastic bowl 👍
Thanks Jon, I thought I may have put people off for life 😂
Great bowl , but you gave me. Heart attack 😮
Haha, sorry about that, I'll try harder next time 😂
That was amazing, your patience to keep going was astounding but it turned out to be a beautiful piece in the end .. well done Mike!
Thanks 😃, patience is one thing I can do fairly well 😃
Beautiful. I love how it turned out.
Thank you! 😊
Looking very good. Thanks for sharing
Thanks Jude, glad we got there in the end 😀
I think my heart stopped when the bowl came flying off 😢
BUT the outcome is so beautiful 😍
Mine did as well, so glad it was not too badly damaged 😀
I knew from the title something was going to happen, but my heart still jumped ! Quite an epic journey right enough 😮
Sorry about that, it was certainly a journey, my heart sank when it flew off at the end!
Beautiful work! Since you asked, I think a transparent resin that was tinted glass green would look beautiful in these kinds of situations.
Thanks and I think you are right! 😀
Turned out great.
Haha thanks, pun intended? 😀
Flipping heck Mike, my heart sank when your bowl went flying near the end. I felt your pain.
Didn't it turn out well though! Well worth all the effort and you'll have a tale to tell the grandkids one day 😉
Haha thanks Andy, the pain was real! The grandkids will be sat down and forced to watch the video next time I see them 😃
@Mike Holton - hand made crafts If it's any consolation Mike, exactly the same thing happened to me last week when I was attempting to finish the foot on a small bowl. I was using the same record jaws too 🤫
@@andyaveyard Thanks my friend 🙂
Turned out very nice. You picked a great colour for the resin
Thank you very much!
Thanks so much for your tips and for subscribing. I was not properly ready when I poured the resin on this one but promise to do better next time 😀
Flipping Heck…when she grew wings and flew, the gasp I made woke the dogs up…Nnnoooooo. Great recovery, and a stunning piece of wood. 😱😱😱😃😃😃
Thanks Fiona, please apologise to your dogs from me 😂. This one had quite a bit of drama. All the best, Mike
That’s a Cinderella bowl for sure great job Mike.
Thanks so much 🙏
Beautiful bowl, when it flew off the lathe, I said oh no, pleased and relieved it didn’t smash to pieces. Thanks. 😊
Hi Ann, it was a bit of a moment when it came off, I got lucky this time. All the best, Mike
You really had me there expecting to see you take out three pieces of your hard work. What a result though and nice cliffhanger😂
Glad you enjoyed it 🤣. I could not help myself to put that bit at the end.
Very Nice A beautiful bowl with great grain.
Thank you very much David 😀
That almost broke me, Mike! I'm glad it turned out well though.
Hi Jeffrey, yeah it was a little emotional! 😂
So I just found this one going through some of your previous videos Mike and when the bowl came off the cold jaws it was like a DOH!! that echoed round the world. It was a big relief to see the bowl was still intact. The end result is very cool indeed. Cheers Deno.
Thanks Deno, I was gutted when it came off lol
Stunning work ❤
Thank you! 😊
Beautiful
Thanks Larry 😃
Whew! Brother Mike, you definitely have some patience! I've had a few pieces fly out of the jaws myself. And, I've had a few choice words when it happened. Glad you stuck with it and made another beautiful bowl !
Thanks Jim 😃, patience is one of my strong points otherwise I would have lost it with this bowl a long time ago lol
