- This is a huge step into the unknown as I try to create something beautiful and useful from this mushroom cloud shaped burl or burr using my woodturning skills. Can it be done or have I stretched the realms of possibility too far this time. Guess you will have to watch and find out.

This man turned my old burr into a peice of art, very happy that i sold it to him, specaily as a fair few others have got some enjoyed from his work. Well done that man.
For years it was mounted to the wall in the garage in a raw state, then some 10 years ago a pal stayed for a while and he decided to clean and polish it up, i didnt even notise for a long while. My plan for it was to mount it to a staff one day, for i love big whoolping clubs but like so many projects, it didnt happern. I had to move resently so have been selling off alot of my old timber slabs and burrs and that brings us here.
I have no idea what type of wood it is either, but it comes from the Black Ilse in Aberdeenshire and it about 20 years off the tree.
Fantastic.
Hi Jim, thanks so much for telling me the history of this piece. I could see that it had been loved for a long time so I just hope I did it justice. All the best, Mike
so happy to read this and find a bit of history of the piece
Hello Jim, thank you for giving us a some of the history about this wonderful piece of wood. It has made a very enjoyable watch even more interesting. 👍
@@Angela-en6oh three comments and we all said "history... of... this... piece" lol!
@@loopinnerthe 🤣 I hadn’t noticed that. We are obviously seeing this from a similar perspective ! Have a great day!
What a great piece! The natural lay of the land on the outside and that incredible grain on the inside and sooo smooth. And the branch on the bottom for the perfect accent! I love it.
Thank you so much 😀
Very unusual piece, glad you let the wood speak for itself
Thanks Ian, with something that has so much beauty it would have been a travesty to have done anything else. 😀
Your knack for turning the unusual, one might say gnarly, specimens into objects of beauty is, to my mind unparalleled! You are an incredible craftsman, and your voice is a perfect match for these endeavors Thank You for sharing😊
Wow, thank you Judy, that is very kind of you to say 😀
Really enjoy the wood you choose to turn, you continually test your skills.
Thanks Bruce, I'm either stupid or brave, I've not decided yet 😂
Your hands HAD to hurt after this project! Wow...terrific attention to the natural beauty of the wood.
Not too bad after this one luckily 😀, thanks Cynthia
It's absolutely beautiful. I'm so glad you didn't touch the outside of the piece other than cutting some of the branch off. Because the finish on the outside and what you've gotten on the inside of the bowl are just amazing.
Thank you very much! 😃
A very unique piece and your prediction of usage was exactly what I was thinking.
Thanks, this was a challenge but a fun one 😀
The grain and finish look amazing.
Hats off for the respect shown this piece.
Thanks Mike
Thanks Fiona, I could not make the outside look any better so did not even try, sometimes you have to leave things as they are.
@@MikeHolton definitely, but not everyone would.
@@fionacrouch1732 true, I did consider sanding it but goad I stopped myself.
@@MikeHolton as are we 😁

A beautiful piece
Thank you! Cheers Gary
What a stunner! And, wow, did I ever gasp when it flew off the lathe! My mother was from Ashford, Kent, England. I live in New York State. I only recently stumbled upon your channel and I'm so glad.
Haha thanks Audie, never been to Ashford, I live up in the the North East of England 😀
It’s a wise man who knows how much to leave and how much to remove. That is beautiful. And your Mother in Law has a wicked sense of humour - I like her 🌞
Haha I do as well, she is one in a million 😀
Beautiful!!!
Thanks Theresa 😀
That was a very different turning for you Mike, beautiful in its own way.
Thanks Mick, it was but I do like a challenge 😀
Brilliant!
Wow, thanks!
Well done mate great job the Wood look's like wallnut
That was what I thought but the burl was not dark enough, I could of course be wrong 😂
Really interesting piece of wood! Never seen that shape before.
Thanks Robert, it's a new one to me as well 😀
Chili bowl for sure!
Thanks 😀
Phil Anderson of Shadfy Acres Woodshop would be proud of you Mike! Thanks for keeping as much of the true beauty of the piece as you could.
Thanks Dam, I love watching Phil, he does such amazing work!
I had to find this video that I saw on RUclips. Just wanted to tell you how beautiful it is that you keep the uniqueness of the orginal borough to make this beautiful bowl
Thanks so much Karen, I like this even though I had no idea how to turn it for the longest time 😀
This looks like something my grandfather would bolt to the wall in his cabin. He used to leave us notes that he wrote on mushrooms, the shelf type that turns black when you scratch them. He was quite a character, as he had been born in 1901, and lived to be 1 month shy of a hundred years old. This sort of burl is a perfect decoration as it is, but I'm watching the video now to see what you make of it, Mike. Fingers crossed. 🤞
Thanks William, your grandfather sounds amazing! 😃
Very cool!
Thanks Malcolm 😀
Wow thats amazing really cool piece Well done
Thank you very much Colin, strange but nice strange 😂
Unusual to say the least 👍
I'm with you on that one 😂
By far, you have the artistic eye for shapes and colors. I so love how you see your finished product when you start. You do have the license to change your mind at any time. I am the police for that issue.
Haha thanks Larry, I always reserve my right to be wrong and to change my mind 😀
Didn't hold out much hope for this piece at the start , but you pulled off another beaut. You give great inspiration for new turner's like me 👍🏻
Thank you so much Geoff, must admit it took me a long time to decide what on eth I could do with this, but I am now happy with how it came out. All the best, Mike
I’ll admit, I had doubts with this one. I couldn’t see how it would turn out. It’s beautiful.
Thanks Ted, I had doubts as well, this one was hard to get my hear around
Beautiful! I really admire you for choosing to stop the turning at the point you have. Many people would have tried to make a hollow form or something else but it looks gorgeous as you have done it! Well done again, Mike! 👍
It wouldn't let me put a comment. I love this piece. It's almost like sun rays coming out of the center. Absolutely beautiful
Thank you very much Tom, this piece had so much natural beauty I just wanted to do the bare minimum.
@@MikeHolton As all of my teachers throughout my scholastic career can attest, I am very good at bare minimum so it's nice to see when others employ that tactic with such beautiful results.
Looking forward to more! Cheers.
@@jeanlong4285 thanks Jean, and I thought so too, those rays are fascinating!
@@tomburns7544 Haha, you sound like half my students 🤣
At the beginning I was sure wondering what you were seeing in that piece of wood. In the end it all made sense. Beautiful! It would make a key bowl befitting in the entry of that 'log cabin' motif. Great way to put Wed., February 28, 2024 to bed.
Thanks so much, sorry for the delay, been a little busy 😀
Oh hey, you just take care of your big move. I'm just kickin' back with your vids, man! I don't understand how RUclips works, so I'm doing what you asked. And you know, I do see good screen grabs for my PhotoShopping creations. @@MikeHolton
Fantastic job on that Mike, thanks for sharing your work with us.
Very welcome my friend 😀
From rotisserie chicken to beautiful bowl. Great piece Mike!
haha thanks Louis 😀
Glad I am not the only one who thought that at first glance.
That was very interesting. When I first saw the piece, i had no idea where it should go. You made excellent decisions and the result is remarkable.
Thanks Tony, I was just like you when I first got it, I did not have a clue what to do 😀
Beautiful as always! 😁👍
Thank you so much Terrie 😀
Now that's a good place to keep your keys in.
Haha thanks! This one was fun 😀
What a precarious piece to turn. That is a beautiful burl. I can see why the people kept it as is for so long. You did a very good job of maintaining the original beauty of the piece while transforming it. Very good job Mike!
Thank you very much William, the guy that sold it to me has commented and given a bit more history on the piece, I've pinned his message to the top. All the best, Mike
What a beautiful piece, once u got to sanding & sealing l could see it shining like the golden rays of the sun 🌞 it's really very different Mike, got to say l love it 💕🌞💕
Thank you so much Karen, those rays are amazing! 😀
Another nice job. And what I particularly enjoy about your videos is the running commentary and verbal notes on what you are doing - and why. And you share your decision-making process. You're a great teacher!
Thank you very much Gerard, it will not surprise you my day job is as a lecturer at a local university. been there 22 years!!
Awesome piece of burl. I’ve never seen anything like it.
Thank you very much, neither have I 😊
Really nice work, Mike !!! Too bad you couldn't keep the stem, but honestly, I was concerned for your hand and forearm. You made the right choice.
Thanks Bill, I would have preferred to keep it and risk my hand but it was too far gone to add much appeal to the piece. All the best, Mike
Looks nice, sounded like a plane but worked out.👍
Haha I've had a few planes on my lathe 😂
This is one of my favorite pieces. Great job.
Thank you very much Rex, the grain in that burl is insane!
Beautiful! And thanks for sharing your thoughts as you are creating!
You are welcome Maria, so glad you liked it 😀
That is a beautiful piece! I would have no idea how to approach something like that, but you certainly found the way. Great work as always.
Thank you so much Lee, it did take a while to come up with a plan 😀
It's a stunner plus there's a cute little orange cat by the hole in the stem 😻
Just one thing as someone who doesn't use fb or ig it would be nice for a little montage of photos on the end of the video if possible please
Thanks I try to do that will all my work now 😃
Love this piece. The outside holds so much interest. With the 2 holes, I’d entire a guess that it was mounted on a bar top or a door frame and people would run across it every time they walked by. Makes for a good story anyway. The grain inside is beautiful. Well done mate.
Thanks Doug, the gent that sold it to me commented and shared a bit more about it, I have pinned his comment to the top 😀
Very unusual shape but the pattern in the grain of the bowl is really beautiful.Did you ever find out what the timber was?.
Hi Baz, I've no idea what to be honest.
Weird but wonderful, the grain in that turned bowl is amazing. Such a huge burl on such a small branch, wonder how it came about? Another masterclass Mike, thanks for taking on such a strange shape and turning another piece of art.
Thanks Colin, the branch may have had an infection of something break off meaning the tree was trying to heal itself creating this. So strange but wonderful, like you said!
I was really wondering what you were going to make of this. The burl looked to me like it might even separate from the original branch because there were little clues for us to see how it all stays together. I had to google a bit, but a burl seems to be the result of an infection or damage to the tree. In the human medical world this would be an anomaly for students to study stored in a jar of formaldehyde. I can't really get past this picture of it as a bit of a freaky thing but maybe exposing its innards and answering the question about what was inside was the best choice. In the hands of Damien Hirst perhaps this would have been sliced and set in clear epoxy... I think this piece really needs to be hands-on to properly understand it and your treatment of it.
Fascinating and brave choice, as ever you surprise perplex and entertain us in equal measure.
Thanks so much for your comments, I really love the Damien Hirst reference and if I ever get anything as unique as this in the future I may just give it a go. Thanks again, Mike
Greetings Mike. Great job turning that one of kind piece. Though I was at the edge of my seat in hope it would not explode on you. It looked dangerous from the beginning 😳
It was certainly an interesting turn. I looked at it for weeks trying to decide what to do with it 😀
@@MikeHolton 😄 I'll bet. Glad it went well though. There will never be another piece like it in the world.
@@dontarguewafool955 I know, but I'm constantly keeping my eyes open for the next interesting piece.
@@MikeHolton 👍
You always teach me something 😊
That does look like a piece that will be held and touched a lot. Is the tight grain or the age of the wood what made it turn out so smooth?
The grain is not that tight so I'm really not 100% sure!
Wow, what interesting piece of wood.
Heh. Being a bit of an addict - to acquiring pipes not to tobacco - I can’t help but wonder about the pipe something like that might make. To be honest, any time someone says the word “burl” I start thinking about old, gloriously turned, briar pipes, but seeing that mass of wood sets me dreaming. Fellow PAS sufferers will understand. I wonder how dense it is and how it might handle heat. Thanks for another cool video!
You are welcome my friend, the way it took a shine makes me thing it could be quite a hard wood, I'm no expert on pipe making so I would not like to hazard a guess at how it would stand against heat.
Another beautiful piece.
Thanks so much Marie 😃
I feel I have seen that in my dreams. It's beautiful. And my girlfriend said as I it's beautiful.
Thanks Paul, ☺️
I wood have still been looking and thinking this way that way , it looks great , nice work Mike 😊😊😊
Haha thanks Vini, I did spend a lot of time looking at it before making a start.
How is it that I go to sleep with a random song in my mind and by the time I've woken up and logged on to You Tube, that lyric has changed from, "So you found a girl who thinks really deep thoughts; what's so amazing about really deep thoughts? into, " I've found a Tuber who loves great swarf" ( and my dream-inspired reply is), "what's so amazing about really great swarf"?
And there you go! 😎
That piece is amazing! Don’t know what I would have done with it.
Don't worry Billy, it took me days to come up with a plan and even then I was not sure it would work 😊
the pain of losing the branch, the joy of that finish in the bowl
I know, I would have loved to keep it but these things happen, all the best, Mike 😀
What will that bowl bowl cost me?
Hi Larry, the burl cost me £25 so make me an offer 😀. You can email me mike@mikeholton.net all the best, Mike
The work done in these videos is insanely beautiful. My husband and I can’t stop watching them. What an artist!
Wow, thank you Alison, and thanks so much for your support, I really appreciate it. All the best, Mike
Same I have to watch a few everyday.
Love it, Mike. Have seen burls like that here in Newfoundland. Gonna have to harvest some.
Another beautiful piece showcasing natures, beauty😊 Awesome job, Mike!
Thank you so much Mary 😀 I'll probably not get another one like this!
Subscribe some time ago. Love your ad-lib approach... very creative.
I love working with exotic materials as well as wood. The bog oak... very cool opportunity. I saw what Dick did with the bog oak... Cool and a WOW!
THE ADDITION OF THE HAMSA 👍
Thanks so much, I must give Dick a call, not seem him post a video in ages
Fabulous work, Mike. Sometimes it's what you DON'T do that counts the most! It must be very difficult to do LESS, rather than more, so well done for holding back. You've produced a wonerful piece of work by not doing much work!
Thanks Phil, with this piece it was a case of looking at it and asking can I improve on how it looks, if the answer is no then I leave that bit alone 😀
You've outdone yourself with this one -- I'm so impressed! I've never seen anything like that chunk of wood before, and I can't imagine coming up with something to do with it myself. Absolutely you were making it up as you went along, but that's what makes wood working so much fun!
Thank you very much Shelley, I love starting something I have no idea where it will end 😃
Not the loveliest piece, but then beauty is in the eye of the beholder! I'm just amazed at your inspiration and expertise. No matter what the outcome, your video's are always entertaining, and I admire the fact that you go to the trouble of acknowledging every comment. A couple of requests from someone who knows nothing about it -could you give a quick demo of 'sharpening up' and what happens to all your shavings? Thanks again for great videos.
Thank you so much Shaun, I'll see what I can do about your request, all the best, Mike
Love your channel!! Very informative and beautiful pieces being turned out. I have work shop and always wanted to add a lathe. After watching your channel, I’ll be purchasing my first lathe. Thank you for the inspiration!!
You are more than welcome my friend, good luck and if you need any advice drop me a line. All the best, Mike
I have a maple tree(probably 200-250 years old) with at least 20 burls like that. The tree is almost 20ft in circumference. I've considered cutting it down, but I just can't bring myself to kill something so old and beautiful.
No I completely agree, I would never cut down a tree like that, it is special!
Hello Mike. Well, that was a really quirky piece - you certainly can pick ‘em! But what a delightful find to work your imaginative design abilities on. The bowl was absolutely beautiful and you really should be proud of how it has turned out. Excellent “re-purposing”. 👍
Thanks so much Angela, this was a challenge but I'm so please d with the way it came out, all the best, Mike
Howdy Mike.
I am amazed to have gotten to see how beautiful it was inside. 400 grit probably worked so well due to how the burl tightened through the years.
Do you "mist" the sanded surfaces in between grits?
Great piece, and choices along the way, as is now typical of your art. 👍
Thanks so much for your kind words Frank, I did not mist the surface, just blow off with air gun. 😀
Amazing turning of the burl. Absolutely beautiful. Yes, a good candy dish, coin holder, anything that would come out of any pocket besides lint. (LoL). ;-) 😚💖💯.
Haha, thanks so much my friend, all the best, Mike 😀
What a spectacular piece of wood 🤩, just amazing. And what you made from it, 👌👌👌beautiful again 🤗. Keep it up Mike, every time I’m looking forward to the next video 💪💪
Thank you so much, I'm sure you will like the next one, well I hope you will 😀
I think I would have followed it out a little more. Especially on the sides of the bowl. Undercut it a bit, to make the void a little larger. But that's my opinion.
I do enjoy your videos and work. Thanks.
Thanks Paul, I think you are right 😀
Great and very different Bowl. You'r right, its a shame you couldnt keep the long branch. I just thought you could have made the Bowl a little bit deeper. Very nice Mike. Cheers
Hi Peter, yes I could have but I didn't lol, all the best, Mike
A very interesting piece. I like it with the two short branch sections.
I would have likely used a belt sander or spokeshave to get the bottom flat.
The interior grain looks wonderful, but very different than I expected for a burl.
So glad the dismount from the lathe did not cause any damage. That must be some very dense wood.
Very well done.
Dave.
Thanks Dave, I intend to give the base another going over with a belt sander to get it flatter, I did rush it a bit to get the video out. I did not expect that grain either, it looked more like end grain than burl but we don't get to choose what's inside. All the best, Mike
One of the most interesting pieces of wood I have ever seen. One of the really difficult problems an artist has is knowing when to stop. This project required you to make tough decisions. I might have done it differently, but my solution might have been less successful.
Thanks George, I looked at this for a long time before making a decision 😀
These are some of my favorite projects. The…..thingamajigs. Lol. Can’t possibly get more character from a turned piece if you tried. I think you did it justice my friend!
Thanks my friend, less it more as they say. It was certainly a challenge though lol
Just like you said, a beautiful little burl bowl to be a useful yet minimally altered charming object. So well done! while no longer a "mushroom", it still shows up the burl part wonderfully.
Thank you very much Susan 😀
Love it.
We stayed in a cabin in the Great Smokey Mountains, and some of the support beams had large beautiful burls on on them. You got to love Mother Nature.
Oh wow, that sounds so cool! I would just love to see that, all the best, Mike 😀
You can make you own wax polish…? That’s why I’m liking you channel, no pretence just informative.
Indeed you can, I made the video a couple of weeks ago, it's a lot easier than you think 😉
I love woodworking, but lathes scare me to death! I would much rather live vicariously thorugh others. Great job! I can watch you all day.
Thanks so much, I do the same but with blacksmiths! 😀
I will admit to being scared when it came loose during turning, but the end result is amazing.
The grain in this burl is impressive - I wonder what the interior of the other lobe looks like.
Another fine example of your talents.
Thank you very much Dave, if I had two I would cut it open for a look, would be very interesting to see, all the best, Mike 😀
What an amazing project. You do find some challenges to take on.. Thank you for sharing reasons for decisions too. I find that incredibly helpful.
Thank you so much Rachel, this one was a very strange turn but so glad it came off, all the best, Mike
I just love the sheen inside the bowl. If you did a finer polish, it'd have reflecting powers for a solar cigarette lighter or marshmallow roaster. I wonder what the focal length is.
Haha, I could give it a measure and see what came out 😂
What a beautiful interior especially since I had no idea what to expect it to look like! Impressive smoothness. So curious what kind of wood it is.
Thanks Mary, I would love to know what it is as well 😀
A very different and interesting shape to make something out of. Nature already created a beautiful creation. Very wise to keep it so close to the original and still make it useful. 😊
Thanks, I can only imagine the comments if I had touched the outside 😂
Well that was certainly different. It's absolutely gorgeous. ❤❤❤❤😅
Haha thanks Karen, this is a strange one for sure 😀
1:51 For the last 10 seconds or so I’ve been thinking that it already kinda looks like an animal in a jungle holding onto a tree branch. Maybe a sloth or koala. I think it could have been carved into an animal on a branch very easily by someone who does it for a living or a serious hobby
Very true but not me, that thought never even occurred to me lol
Interesting piece. At first I wasn't sure what you could do with it without cutting it up and maybe doing a epoxy resin project. But in the end, it turned out beautiful.
Thanks Tim, it took a long time to decide what to do with this 😁
I love turning interesting wood that was definitely different. But it turned out really nice good work Sir.
Cheers from
California.
Thanks Henry, I love turning strange and work hard to find interesting pieces to share, all the best, Mike 😀
There is a pattern makers tool that is a bunch of pins in a holder. You press the pins into the bowl to show the convex shape. On the other side will be the concave shape. Nice to have when making the jam chuck.
Not a bad idea as long as you don't scratch the inside of the bowl 🤣. But yea I will look into getting one. Thanks
That was very ballsie. But it turned out beautifully. It's amazing what you can find inside a burl.
Thanks John, I could not wait to see what it was like inside and was not disappointed! all the best, Mike 😀
Beautiful piece!! I have one that I just lay on my piano, branch and all. The burl is about the size of a bowling ball.
Wow that's pretty amazing! I would love to see it. all the best, Mike 😀
I really thought it was perfect the way it was. I didn't know what beauty was hidden inside. You have enhanced the natural beauty of the piece and made it a true work of art. Bravo!
Thanks so much Kirsty, with a piece like this you have to respect the natural beauty, all the best, Mike 😀
I would have sworn the only thing to do with that would be to use epoxy to make a uniform shape. Turned out lovely the way you did it and kept the character of the piece.
Thanks Shawn, I considered lots of things including epoxy but glad I went with this, all the best, Mike 😀
Come out looking beautiful and you did a great job turning it
I enjoyed your video and I gave it a Thumbs Up
Thank you so much 🤗 really appreciate your support, all the best, Mike
When the burl went flying, I was afraid it'd have landed on your foot. Fortunately you were standing to one side.
Thanks William, I always turn from the side wherever possible for reasons just like this 😀
A truly remarkable piece, congratulations Mike👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏💕
Thanks so much Maud 😀
I was a little bit worried at the very start of the video - it would have been a shame to lose all that natural character. I'm very happy with all the respect you showed to this very unique piece of wood. Just excellent!
Thanks so much Ronnie, The outside shape was so unusual and beautiful there was no way I could improve on it so I just left it, sometimes less is more 😀
You have a great artistic sense for how to bring out the beauty of what you are turning. You also have great narration. You explain things well and make it very easy for us non woodworkers to follow what you are doing. Keep up the great work.
Wow, thanks Bob that is very nice of you to say! all the best, Mike 😀
Very nice, Mike. Burls are always fun. You just never know what you might get.
You got that right Loran, it's like a voyage of discovery 😀
