Great eye to see the beauty underneath. The years in the grain - surviving the elements, just existing - are amazing. We humans are nothing without The Trees.
Laburnum has many wonderful grains. You did a fantastic job with the wood. I love that you left all the splits. They look so lovely when you finish the piece. Really beautiful. Thank you Mike.😊. Xxx
I don't know anything at all about woodturning, yet I find your videos so interesting I've been binge watching your channel the past couple of days. Your work is truly beautiful! Wishing your channel much success!
This is AMAZING, AWESOME. I'm 83 years old. My Dad showed how to use the lathe on a ShopSmith when I was 10 yrs old. Now I'm addicted to this channel. My brother now has the ShopSmith, and uses it regularly. Great channel
What an amazing piece of wood! I'm not surprised you had to stop n stare a few times to take it all in!! It really does take your breath away!! Beautiful and beautifully done as always! 😊
Oh my!!! The grain of this wood is fabulous! You are so adventurous. Seeming to gravitate towards unusual bits, roots, burls, and all kinds of challenges to turn that are a risk but produce such unique results.
Well it may have looked absolutely ugly to some people but as a former Senior master of Art here in Sth. Aust. I always taught my students there was always beauty in any piece of wood. What the artist has to do is unlock that beauty. In a different form from Sculpture, the wood turner has the same challenge. You have risen to the occasion brilliantly once again Mike. This piece is quite stunning. I am sure there are MANY people who would love to have this piece on display in their home. Congratulations on a stunning piece that has been 'released' from scrap. Cheers, Don from South Australia.
Thanks Don, when I saw this piece online I had a pretty good idea what it would be like inside and just could not resist buying it. I have had so many people ask to buy it but instead I gave it to my son so will now hopefully stay in the family. All the best and I wish you a wonderful new year, Mike
I could spend hours just drinking in the beauty of this fascinating piece. Each swirl and shading in the grain offers a new dimension to explore. Superb workmanship!
Mike, Hi ! I'm a retired machinist of 50 years. Never worked with wood, just metal. I like to say I can make anything. If you can conceive of it, I can make it. In this case I want to pay you an artists compliment. Guys like us can SEE the finished product before the job is started. The drawings are in our head. You did a beautiful job here. If you think like me, you would say, God made this. We just scrape the excess protective layers away. Good scraping, sir.
Thanks for the kind words Bill, I can generally see beyond the exterior and know what I want to make, weather I can find it or not is a different matter, All the best, Mike 😃
Glad you think so! I get some comments about how I should shut up and get on with it but there are a thousand other channels doing that and I want to offer something different. All the best, Mike
Great video technique. You explain your intent, show us the cutting technique, then fast forward or skip the boring content. One of the best turners on RUclips!.
Horrible piece of wood is generally what you have to turn and try to get a splendid result as this one ! Plus a superb finish using DO is making it magic ! Very well done ! JL
Beautiful Piece ! Mike I like how you stop the lathe and show us the progress you are making. Some turning videos I've watched will do a time lapse after they start and the viewer does not really get a true sense of the process. it's nice to see it in the more broken down phases and watch the piece reveal itself. New subscriber learning from a pro, thank you.
As I approach retirement wood turning is one of the things I am interested in and your channel provides fabulous examples and explanations. Thank you !
Thanks! I was thinking of a title around the word ugly and it just popped up, not even though about the song in years, now I can't get it out of my head 🤣.
Wow! Talk about a hidden gem. That grain and color variation is spectacular. You often mention going to sharpen up. Maybe in the future you could do a short video on how you do that. Some of us newbies might like to learn that aspect of the process and skillset.
Absolutely gorgeous vase, it is so amazing how wood can be so incredibly exquisite. Thank you for making and sharing your doing so. Sincerely, from Canada
Hi Mike, I cut down a Laburnum that died in my garden about 8 years ago and I have been loving it. The heart wood is very dense and dark and the sapwood is almost white. The contrast is brilliant. I only have one piece left which is sad. Yours is completely different but just as beautiful.
Hello Mike. Yet again you have taken a very unassuming piece of wood and turned it into a true delight for the eye. Well done for seeing the such potential and drawing it out.
@@MikeHolton Hello Mike. One of the most enjoyable elements of this, for me, was hearing your delight as the wood revealed it’s beauty. Congratulations, it is lovely.

That's a very beautiful piece. The grain and coloring reminds me of the mulberry that I have been turning over the last year or two.
