On the outside, two holes make the pig's eyes but on the inside those holes and the grain in between make a nice smile!! It is beautiful, wonderful work!! Happy birthday to your daughter! 🙂👍💖
After finding out on Monday I had 4 hernias, I went into surgery and must do nothing for 3 days now. What else to do but learn from a master before I go back to my workshop. I’m gagging to get back after watching Phil. I love the pig. 👍🏻
An aromatic piggy, how apt! And what a beautiful piggy it is. The colors are so rich and I love the patterns they make. Shenanigans is a great place to get up to on your birthday! I hope your daughter has a wonderful time. I've meant to tell you that I grew up in Des Moines, Washington, not too terribly far from where you are, went to Mt. Rainier HS in the early 70's. A favorite destination with friends was Lake Tapps. Of course the world was pretty different back then. I haven't been back to the old stomping grounds for at least 20 years. Take care, and thank you for sharing this beautiful bowl!
We were probably at Lake Tapps at the same time, Gwynn! My sister used to live on the lake and I spent many hours swimming and water skiing there in the 70's. Those were the good old days! 😊
Haha I didn’t see the pig until you pointed it out; that’s a very pretty pig! The bowl is beautiful; I like how you respect the wood you’re working with and always try to bring out its best features. I enjoy watching your talents and listening to your narrations. Thank you for sharing.
Thank You Phil, Thank You Steve McCool.... Lots of sharpening, silica in the wood, punky sapwood, hole through the log, crack on the side...BUT WHO CARES Phil. You pulled it all together and created beautiful unique masterpiece!!!! Now I have to wait another 7 days for some more MAGIC FROM YOUR LATHE....TM HAPPY BIRTHDAY STEPHANIE 🍀
Borer bees! Or carpenter bees are what made that hole. They are common around here and the bore into wood along the grain to nest. Even pressure treated. Beautiful bowl Phil. That was a bonus peice I sent and I'm glad you put your personal touch on it. Turned out really great. That peice was from my front yard and had been cut for about 6 years. I have a great deal of cedar already cut here so if you would like more, sat the word. I'm sorry I shortened your gouge. Happy birthday to Stephanie at half century!
Thank you Steve for sending Phil the wood. He did not know that the borer bee hole is perfect storage for a crochet hook in a yarn bowl. We have western red cedar, it also smells great, but does not have that wonderful red color.
Good evening, Phil. I really like your cedar bowl. Today I was sharing with another turner, your love of bark and how you remove the tenon. He had just turned a bowl similar to yours. When asked how he was going to remove the tenon, he said he hadn't got that far yet. Said he was going to look up Phil at Shady Acres Wood Shop. You are welcome.
Another fabulous piece! I’ve enjoyed dozens of your videos. This morning a friend showed me how to turn a jointer’s mallet from a piece of firewood. I’ve never been on a lathe before but really loved doing it. He is also a big Phil Andersen fan and we would interject your comments quite often. Thanks to the firewood dealer for providing the wood for this little lopsided box elder jointer’s mallet for all to enjoy!
Phil it never gets old watching you turn out beautiful pieces of art. You have a true God given talent for creating and for doing it so interestingly. Keep on keeping on! And happy birthday to your daughter, I have two so I know how special they are!
We should call this one Arnold it's amazing how you keep these difficult pieces from breaking apart I noticed the cracks on the inside your a true master craftsman
Phil, you have definitely NOT lost your touch. This a great piece of woodturning on a lovely piece of Red Cedar as it turned out. I am so glad that there was some decent sap wood as you got down into it because it produced some wonderful contrast to the well known red colouring of the cedar. I also think the 'pig' is quite adorable. I still love the way you virtually hold a 'quiet conversation' with each piece of wood you turn, almost as though you are 'seeking guidance from the piece of wood as to how it wants to have its inner beauty displayed', as you say, "for all to see". Thank you for sharing this my friend. Stay safe & well & keep sharing your brilliant talent with ALL your viewers. Cheers, Don from South Aust.
Another beauty to the collection Phil, simply gorgeous shape, contours and colours all in one oval, self ventilated bowl! Phew.....love it oink, oink! 😃 Have a great week and hope your daughter has a lovely Birthday too, take care. Thank you for sharing your gifts with us all, Phil. Bless you. 💛🫂☺️
Wonderful video and end result! I'm a DIY woodworker and have only turned one bowl ever. Woodworking is very satisfying but turning brings satisfaction to a new level!
I never considered eastern red cedar to be high in silica, but when I looked up the southern form, there it is in the name... Juniperus virginiana var. silicicola. Great bowl, as always!
That turned out beautifully! Cedar can be some dangerous wood on the lathe. You gotta stop often to check for cracks. I've had cedar blow apart on the lathe before. Happy Birthday Stephanie 🎂! She's 2 years older than me. Take care and GOD BLESS 🙏!
I have never commentated on any turning video before but I must in this instance simply you magnificently gave back a dead part of a tree it's new life simply by enhancing the beauty that was waiting to be released. Well done and thank you for inspiring me.
It is indeed a beautiful bowl. I love the Percy Pig face too 🐽 The time here in Scotland is 1.42am and obviously I should be asleep, but with a new video from you, that just wasn’t going to happen until I had a top up of relaxing wood turning. A very Happy Birthday to your daughter too. Fifty is a fun decade, but it sounds as though she has worked that out for herself. Take care, stay safe and see you next video…
Yes the deep red IS a beautiful color. Internally that piece of wood sure had some less than ideal issues. I'm glad it sanded up as nicely as it did for you Phil. Given how quickly it would dull your tools, and I saw how quickly it happened, I'm a bit surprised how easily it surrendered to the sanding paper.
A lovely turn, Phil. I have some 'ugly logs' in my yard, and now you have given me some inspiration to pick one out and see what becomes of it. Many thanks!
This is my first time watching your channel, and I really enjoyed it. What I love the most about this piece, is how much effort you put in to preserve the unique deformities, problems, and damage done to the piece of wood before turning it. The fact that you both respect and love how these differences, these non-conforming aspects of the wood is what makes the piece both unique and beautiful. And you did all you could bring it out that uniqueness and to preserve it. That’s what a true artist does. You do have an artist’s eye and I wanted to say, as a fellow artist, how much I appreciate it and I absolutely love that bowl.
It looks like a challenge to turn, and a bugger with all of the silica to keep a (dull) edge on your gouges. I've said this before: we use silica to sharpen our tools, and silica dulls our tools. How does it know what to do, and when? 🙂 Nice finished product, Phil! I'll bet your shop is aromatic now, too. Take care, --Paul

Beautiful piece Phil nicely done looks as smooth as you described it and base does resemble a piggy . Give your daughter a birthday greeting all the way from Canada 🇨🇦 see you in the next one 👌 thanks again Ron
Ive been watching wood turning videos for about two ears and I continue to be amazed! I’m collecting information on tools, equipment and finishing materials used; thank you so much for the great information about what you are using! Maybe I’ll take the leap and look into buying a set up of my own.
Thank you for another beautiful project and your step by step dialogue! Truly a tutorial in every video that I appreciate so much! Here in the Ozarks we are blessed (some would say cursed) with an abundance of Eastern Red Cedar. Happy 50th to Stephanie!🌹 My baby girl just turned 45 last week 🥰
Cedar is a very tricky wood to turn. Very prone to cracking. I’ve had the best luck using resin as a stabilizer and just incorporate the two with good results. Nice bowl Phil enjoy your advice and commentary.
I'm glad you did this piece as my next will be spalted Jacaranda, I have a crotch and a log all in one so 2 pieces, looking forward to it, Well done as always Phil
Oink! Oink! Yep, that’s a cute pig all right, Phil. I’d say that’s a keeper! It’s amazing the things you find in the pieces you turn, buddy. Another great video, my friend. You keep turning and I’ll keep watching! 👏👏😃😃 Happy turning, …..Gord
Beautiful turning and as always awesome piece! Great to see you in the shop and making these great videos and unique creations. Enjoy your daughters birthday, and happy birthday to her! Take care and keep the videos coming. Love your work!
That red grain is stunning ! Really nicely done as always Phil. I think the holes add a lot of charter to the piece. Just beautiful bud. Have a good weekend !
Very nice turning again Phil. Love the finish, how it brings out the color and the grain. Just last week I turned a red cedar bowl and finished it with Howard’s Feed n Wax,which always puts nice sheen and feel on the turning. I swear I could smell it while you were turning!! Keep on turning. Looking for the next one.
Wow! What Skill! Thank You!
Any time, P J, thanks for watching! 😊
Its beautiful Phil

I cedar what you did there, Phil.

That must be the most handsome pig in town Phil. Brought a smile to my face.😂 A beautiful bowl with tons of character. Thanks for another great video
Glad you enjoyed it, Mike, thanks! 😊
It's a beautiful bowl, I'd be proud to have turned it. Does It still have a lot of the wonderful aroma after you turn and wax it?
Phil I have turned red cedar and left tenon unfinished for aroma. Like bowl a lot.thank you for sharing

That cedar really pops with the shellac. Great shape. well done.
Yes it does! Thanks, Earl! 😊
What a beautiful piece. For not having any roots, rocks or other debris in it the piece has character that stands out. Thank you for the video.
Thanks for watching, Dan! 😊
I wonder if that hole isn't from the original sapling having rotted out, or from some other twig or sapling it enveloped as it grew.
Nice to see you feeling well and doing such a nice work. Rgds from Rio de Janeiro

I'll relay your good wishes, Stephanie, thank you! 😊
Beautiful bowl, Phil! It would look great filled with red and green grapes.
😄
Nice job. I respect anyone who turns cedar because of its tendency to crack and fall apart.
😊
Beautiful eastern red cedar, funny think that many consider it a noxious weed. Also funny that beign a juniper its called cedar
😊
Only a noxious weed if you don't let it grow to its potential. 🤔😉
I love turning eastern red cedar such a beautiful wood. Great natural edge wood.
