    I used to work for a community banking company that celebrated Arbor Day each spring by giving away about 3000 seedling trees to the public as a PR event. Over the years, we gave away Green Ash, Red Bud, Hawthorn and Golden Rain seedlings.This project ran for at least 25 years and probably netted upwards of 7 to 10 thousand new trees in our community assuming about 10 to 15 per cent actually were planted and grew. I think the project ended in the late 1980s so the youngest of these trees would be over 30 years old by now. Since we featured Golden Rain trees every three or so years there is an abundance of mature examples of this species in my hometown and each time I visit, I see them everywhere. Really an unusual and attractive tree in an urban setting. The yellow flowers in June, followed by the tawny-colored lantern seed pods and small, dark green leaves make this a very special tree. To know its wood is so decorative makes me feel really glad I helped bring a large number of these great trees to my old home town.

      Wow! What a fantastic idea. If only every town had the initiative to follow in these footsteps. Society grows rich when men plant tree’s of which they will never feel the shade. Thanks for watching 😁👍🏻

    There is something very satisfying in the knocking, clacking, rattatat tatting, sizzling, whirring, and humming of the tools and machinery. I appreciate that you didn't dub this with music or rush us through the process or overwhelm the work with words. It is a stunningly beautiful piece of wood, and you brought it out into the light.

    You edit out the stops along the way, I love to see the wood develope. For me, seeing the lathe spin down and taking a good look at the piece is much more entertaining than watching a blur with shavings flying off. I love your pieces, just great work. I was kinda saving that comment from past videos, when you switched to hallowing and I saw the grain pattern, holy cow. That is a lottery win piece of wood.

      I both agree and disagree with this. I've seen videos that was satisfying just watching it shape on the lathe then they stop and the grain is beautiful, the imperfections add to the beauty and then they keep taking away from it and I get disappointed until the end. For me I prefer watching it spin and see the chips flying as it shapes. That's very mentally satisfying and relaxing. Then just catching glimpses here and there until the final polish and finished product add to the satisfaction. But as I mentioned I also agree and love seeing how the grain looks while it's getting its shape.

      I agree. I really like seeing when someone is turning a piece of wood has a lot of personality & live edging in all kinds of shapes and directions. Seeing the progress and even hearing the one turning talks about what is going on inside their head, how the wood is reacting, etc. Just seeing a blur with shavings flying isn't nearly as interesting.

    There is a Golden Rain tree behind my building. They are really an interesting tree. I stumped 2 tree companies, none knew what it was. Used to be a greenhouses behind my place decades ago, and it was the courtyard for the business. Very cool easy to grow very tolerant of extremes. Live in SW Ohio

    Dittos on all the praise you got for your workmanship and the beauty of the final product!
    I did have a tech question though. At around 8:40 or so, you are using what appears to be a powered chisel. Who makes such a thing and may I ask where one might find one of these?

    • @JackMackWoodturning
      @JackMackWoodturning  3 года назад +2

      Thanks mark. The one I have is sold by Axminster tools. I’d certainly NOT recommend it. It fires random blobs of black grease onto the workpiece every now and then. I’m on the process of trying to find a good quality one. When I do il post it on here. If you find one in the mean time I’d love to know which one you select.
      Cheers for watching 👍🏻

    Thank you Mr. Jack. Very inspirational to watch a craftsman's hands at work. This generation has no time to watch and learn. It is a shame to because these methods and secrets will be lost in time. Myself I carve with mortar and cast with plaster and the youth today is to much in a hurry. I can go out and buy that. At least some of your work Jack is preserved in time with this film. I remember woodshop in high school. Such an art working with wood. My father was a plasterer so guess what I am? It's okay I am nearly retired and at the top of my industry with many beautiful and creative achievements. My children will never for get watching me work or seeing some of the projects I have worked on. You really inspired me Jack. Maybe for a retirement gift I should ask for a lathe? Hee Hee! Just jokin! I subscribed and I'll be watching Mr. Jack Mack. Thanks again!

    Lovely. Although this spectacular piece is a very elegant shape, I keep wanting to enjoy the inside surface as well. The narrow lip deprives me of that. Its insides are a hidden mystery. My practical self wants to see and experience it as more than a pretty rock to admire on a shelf.
    I want it all!! Thanks for sharing!

    • @JackMackWoodturning
      @JackMackWoodturning  3 года назад +3

      Thanks Renee, I understand your point. I feel this is why we sometimes decide to turn a hollow form over an open vessel.. in this way you can capture the whole range of the wood.. the curve showed the grain of the burl from the side of the grain and across the grain as your eye moves from the side of the piece up to the top. It also shows the continuation of the natural form rather than just seeing a pretty bowl with still see a piece of nature but in a form that will last as a beautiful object for generations to come.
      I’m forever fascinated by the concept that any one piece of wood can become an infinite amount of finished pieces depending on hot the wood turners chooses to approach the piece. There is no right and wrong. Just lessons to learn for the next piece you make. 😊
      Thanks for watching 😊👍🏻
