Woodturning: The Root Burl!

  • There were so many ways to orient this unique piece of Manzanita root burl on the lathe, and I had originally intended not to use epoxy resin. However, when it was clear that I could not achieve the shape I was going for without losing too much of the character from this wood, I had to bite the bullet, as they say, and throw this piece into some delicious plastic.
    Let me know what you think of this piece by leaving a comment below! I read all of them and respond to as many as I can.
    Thanks to Total Boat for the thickset epoxy! This stuff worked wonders and did not crack, even though I poured almost 3 liters of resin and a 7 inch deep pour. I never had to fill a single crack with filler or CA glue (discount/affiliate link below).

      I firmly believe that you are half correct. David did a great job with this piece, better than anything that I could hope to do, but I don't believe that there is only ONE "right person" for that root burl. I think that any talented artisan/craftsman who owned that root burl would be the "right person" and would bring out their own unique vision of beauty from it. Let's say the multiverse is real and infinite. If that root was handed to a different artisan/craftsman in each universe, or even if it was handed to the David of each universe, a different yet beautiful piece will be produced in each case. That's one of the great things about creativity... it has NO LIMITS. If David was handed an identical root burl I doubt that he would want to create a second urn/vase that mirrored what he had already created. Where would the fun be in that? Anyway, I don't know much, but I know that have never wanted to duplicate something that I have already created.
      Great job David.

    absolutely incredible experience watching this with no context at all for how it was going to turn out; I just about lost it when you started pouring NOT JUST ONE GOOP, but VARIOUS goops, PLURAL into that bucket! It's so cool to see the steps of a process that's totally opaque to me, gone through by an obvious pro.
    Also really appreciate how long this video is; I feel like the pacing gives a really good idea of how much time & work it takes to make carefully-considered art like this by hand. I got a tiny bit of that "wow! made something!" satisfaction vicariously, but not without thinking multiple times that, like, whoa... so much time spent hanging out patiently in front of a spinning piece of wood, shaping it little by little. excellent stuff!!

    • @DavidAdamsen
      @DavidAdamsen  10 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks so much! Yeah, I took my time with this one. I spent a lot of time just thinking about how to mount this on the lathe, and even longer figuring out what to make out of it. In the end, sometimes simple is best so the wood can speak for itself… another reason why darker/black epoxy is my preference.

    I needed this tonight. In a crazy way It's a beautiful way to end a night when I have been mourning my sister who was killed last year. To see that root go from It's natural state, ripped out of the ground, then cut, turned, poured over, cut some more, shaped, and polished feels a lot like my heart right now. The process so painful, but so carefully watched by the Creator. He knows what the end result will be from the very beginning; something more beautiful and lasting than what you started with. Thank you for this. I can sleep now. 🤍
