    Well Mike you certainly did justice to that piece of wood, managing to show off that grain to its best effect, and what some lovely grain it is as well. That was also a very inspired choice of finishes to use. I loved the fact that you put three feet on the base rather than just conformed to a standard rim.
    I do love the turner and Hooch, nice little play on words
    Thanks for mentioning my channel i appreciate that,

    A gorgeous bowl. Very well done. Some very nice grain and contrast between sapwood and heartwood. Glad the cracks did not create any issues.
    I expect you may want to keep this one.
    I have a friend who used Boiled Linseed Oil on a project. He did not know about the exothermic oxidation. He put the rags in a plastic garbage can next to the house. A fire started. Some damage to the house but caught in time and a very hard lesson learned.
    Dave.

    • @MikeHolton
      @MikeHolton  Год назад

      Hi Dave, yes, this one is staying with me or at the vest least a close family member where I can keep an eye on it. Luckily I've never had a problem with spontaneous combustion but then again I am fairly careful in how I dispose of rags. Glad your friend only had a little bit of damage, could have been an awful lot worse!
      All the best

    Walnut is a beautiful wood & this piece is right up with the best examples. That being said Mike, you have done a brilliant, sensitive job on turning this piece & showing the beautiful grain to brilliant effect. I love that you did not conform to tradition & put a standard ring base for this platter to stand on but crafted three great feet for the piece to stand on. Hey, have you ever watched Phil Anderson from 'Shady Acres Woodshop' & his novel way of removing the 'nub' when taking off a tenon. Worth a look if you have not, he also commentates in a very similar way to yourself. Fabulous piece mate, cheers, Don from South Australia.

      Thanks Don, yes I have watched Phil remove his nubs and I did try to copy once with hilarious results and a mild heart attack 😀, I'll try again one day.

      Thinking back to last week’s ‘exciting’ fly through the air experience, using cole jaws…would it have been anymore secure using the wood chuck and neoprene?

    • @MikeHolton
      @MikeHolton  Год назад +1

      @@fionanaylor6104 Yes! I don't think there is any doubt about it. I did however get a few tips from people like using masking tape to hold it in the jaws or glue it on there with hot glue. 😀

    A key takeaway from this is the pre-planing by inspecting the grain of the piece.
    You mentioned about sawdust & CA glue for the cracks, I like to use instant coffee with glue to leave a bark inclusion appearance.

    You never cease to amaze with your skills Mike. The Feet just make that for me. Beautiful piece of wood. So creative. Also learning so much from you.
    Was a bit nervous watching when the Jam chuck came out... Fantastic work as ever.

    Nice to have friends who give you nice blanks, looked well at the end.
    Do you only have a 2" set of jaws? That was a tiny tenon on such a large blank in my humble opinion.

      Thanks Chris, at the time that is all I had. If I was to do it again I would use larger jaws 😃
