Woodturning resin project - cherry root ball, scrapwood challenge!
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 28 ноя 2024
- In this woodturning resin project, I create a piece of art from a scrap wood cherry root ball using epoxy resin and some elbow grease. I used GlassCast to set the root in resin without a pressure pot. This is a great scrapwood challenge
There is a lot of pure turning in this video which could make it suitable for ASMR. The root ball used is wild cherry. A lot of the wood turning projects I make can be completed by the beginner through to the more experienced wood turner. If you have any ideas for artwork, wood inlays, epoxy projects or any other wood turning projects please get in touch. Collaborations are always welcomes.

Thank is pure beauty right there! EXCELLENT work and the video was pretty good too! 🤗
Glad you enjoyed it! I really enjoyed this one :D
What would something like this cost?
@@mzchaoz3635 good questions, with the time spend and cost of resin it would probably be £150 - £200
@@MikeHolton How much is that in pure old Texan money? LOL
@@nanalefevre3670 about 300 - 350 dollars I guess 😁
I wouldn’t have thought you could make anything with that piece of wood. But it is absolutely gorgeous!
Thanks so much Susannah, this is still one of my favourite transformations 😀
Really inspiering!! Thank you and best of luck
Gosh I am 77 absolute beginner and watching you is amazing a true Artist, so much for me to observe , learn thankyou
You are so welcome Christine, all the best, Mike
A year ago, you had less than a thousand subscribers! Now 22,700! Well done, Mike! 😍🇦🇺
Thanks Jeni, it has been just a little mind blowing, I still feel like I'll wake up to it all being a dream 😀
@@MikeHolton Just keep being you! It’s working!
@@Jeni10 haha thanks, all the best, Mike
Mike is truly an artist! The way he mixes colors, makes different shapes work for him and then explaining what he wants to do and how he is doing it is very informative. I love his work and as a retired person on Social Security I'll probably never afford anything he makes. Just having the video is really a gift! Blessings Mike!
Thanks so much Chris, leaving comments on my latest pieces will always give you a chance of winning one of my pieces. All the best, Mike
This looks like a wood and resin homage to classical Greek pottery. Breathtaking.
Thanks Irina, I must make another one of these soon 😃
I wouldn't have thought a root piece like that could be turned at all! I love how it turned out, so gorgeous! The resin colors mixed up well, the swirls of the mica are lovely and the wood grain is so interesting. I'm glad to have seen this result.
Thank you so much Susan, tree roots can have some amazing grain structure as long as you can get it dry before it goes rotten. I do love the way this one comes out. It's one of the few pieces that have always been on display at home, despite my mother-in-laws attempts to steal it 😂
These projects keep you in suspense. It’s like opening a parcel with many pieces of paper. It keeps you in suspense until the beauty of the vase is revealed. Beautiful
Thanks Cindy ☺️
This is my third video in two days. When I first saw you cutting up that root ball, I couldn't imagine how that would turn out to be a thing of beauty since it seemed so convoluted and dirty. The outcome was amazing. The wood is spectacular and the fact that the resin filled in so well with no air bubbles just adds that extra pop to the vase. Beautiful job, thank you for yet another great video. I really enjoy watching and seeing the outcome of these projects. Wish I had a fraction of your talent. Thank you again, be well, be careful and be safe my friend, great job!
Thanks so much, I really appreciate your support 😀
I was shocked to see how beautiful it looked. This is my first time watching
This beauty looks like ancient drawings found in caves! Absolutely amazing!!!😊
Thanks so much 🙏
What a beautiful creation from a root ball!
Many thanks Jane 😁
I love what Nature gives us. I make cloth baskets and love to embellish them with drift wood, shells and beads. We never know what we are going to get, but we know it will be very special. I love when someone finds the perfect basket for themselves or for a gift. Love your work!🌈
Thanks Brooke I love the sound of your work 😀
Wow! I never thought that root would turn out so beautiful. Very enjoyable to watch as it turned from a mundane piece of root, bark and dirt into a gorgeous vase.
Thanks Fred, I really want to do this again as I loved the process 😃
Back in time. A different lathe and no hooch. Beautiful mixture of nature and man made. You are a talented artist.
Thank you very much Barbara, this seems so long ago now!!! 😀
A lot of toil becomes a thing of total beauty! The resins mixed well and found their place. It says Wild Cherry. Thank you, Mike.
Thanks Bob, I must try another of these, I love the process 😀
Traumhaft schön! Das Zuschauen ist die reinste Freude.
Das ist so nett von dir, vielen Dank, Mike
Beautiful! The way you caress that wood shows just how much you love the beauty of it.
Thank you very much and you are so right, I still have this piece despite frequent offers to sell. 😀
Beautiful work! My grandfather told me wild Cherry grew in the north Louisiana hills along the Arkansas border until the Japanese sent over buyers during the Great Depression who wiped it out.
Wow, I didn't know that, we have loads in the UK
If there was ever a piece that deserves a nice high gloss, this is it. Truly a thing of beauty.
Thanks 😊
Watching something rough become something gorgeous is very Zen.
Many thanks Carmen glad you enjoyed it 😁
Oh my goodness! Look what that old twisted up piece of wood became !! That is so beautiful it is bringing tears to my eyes.
Aw bless you, thanks 😀
Such a difference from the beginning, with mud, stones, and grit, to this, absolutely smooth and shiny, a finish just asking to be touched! The colours, also, are great, echoing its wild cherry origins. Well done!
Thank you very much Spephanie, my mother in law keeps trying to claim this one 🤣
That really turned out nice.
How did under a thousand subscribers become nearly 20 thousand and rising...?
This is how...Inspired innovation, making the most of the available tools and materials, pushing the limits and sheer hours of painstaking work. Plus the gift of a natural eye for beauty.
Mike, every video of yours that I watch I am blown away by what you do and how carefully you record and present back to us every step. Such joy, I hope they never run out.
Thanks so much!!! Wow that is quite a compliment, I have been lucky along with way, but I do really try hard to do the jest job I can from start to end. All the best, Mike 😀
Good job bro. Love from India ❤
Thanks so much 😀
Very ambitious I live on a farm in Canada and had about 30 huge cherry trees blow down in a bad storm. As well as about fifty mature maples I have harvested some enormous root balls that will require outboard turning and huge amounts of epoxy. Your pieces are inspirational.
Thanks so much Bruce, that would be quite some turning!!! 😀
I can’t stop watching you make these projects! They’re all so amazing! You have a gift ❤️
Thank you so much Joanne ☺️
This is spectacular. I love cherry wood but this takes it to a whole other level.
Thanks for the comment 🙂
Результат превосходный... Изысканное изделие.
Большое спасибо, мой друг
Wow... looks like you work an hour or more just getting the wood ready to start working on. I'm even More impressed now!
Yes this one took a lot of preparation but worth every second. 😀
It's good to see someone using the base of the tree. It is more times than not some of the prettiest wood of the tree . Better than a burl even. God's Art!!!
Thanks Scott, there is always some amazing grain in there that is for sure 😀
The color turned out great and a nice contrast with the cherry root. Thanks Mike!
Very welcome Brenda 😁
I was stunned to see what you started out with, and delighted with the end result! Wow!
Thanks Shelley 😀
Beautiful, I like the way the colour of the resin you used is a cherry colour on a wild cherry root, came out fantastic. Thanks for the video.
You are welcome Ian and thanks 😀
So beautiful. Your choice of colors coordinates perfectly.
Thank you so much 😊
Absolutely beautiful. Can't wait to see more.
More to come! All the best, Mike 😀
You’re work is stunning. And the process is totally mesmerizing. I don’t even know how I stumbled across your videos, but I can’t stop watching.
Thank you so much Joseph, all the best for the New Year, Mike
I was a little concerned with your choice of colors at first. I must admit the vase turned out beautiful 😍! Congratulations on another winner! 👏
Thank you so much Kirsti 🙂
I'm seeing your work for the first time and love what I see. Keep me watching.
Thanks Sandy, well there are many videos in my collection I hope you will like to do just that 😀
Beautiful piece.I use the carbide as you do and use a swept back bowl gouge to help refine the shape. It has reduced tear out for me. Thank you for sharing. Watching other turners work helps me refine my own work.
I do that now myself. When I made this I was still very new to turning 😀
Like studying clouds…all kinds of shapes pop out…love it…gorgeous work!…👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Me too Loraine, I'm a member of the cloud appreciation society 😀
I love your accent, and the wood you work with turn into such beautiful pieces, they would turn house into a beautiful home keep up the good work love watching you turn the wood it’s amazing what you can do with a small piece of wood thank you for giving us the opportunity to watch you work….
Thank you so much Trish and you are very welcome 😀
Wow, now that is incredible. To look at it from the beginning to where it’s ended up is just mind blowing and something that anyone would be proud to have in their house. It just goes to show that you shouldn’t write off any thing because With a lot of hard work and perseverance, the results can be absolutely incredible.
Thanks Martin, I made this one a coupe of years ago and it is still one of my favourite pieces, my mother in law keeps trying to sneak it in her bag to take home lol 😃
@@MikeHolton 😂🤣 well all I can say is that your mother-in-law has got really good taste😎
@@martincotterill2132 Haha she does
I'm getting nostalgia for a silver nail polish I forgot I used to have!
Haha, wonder if I could use nail polish on a bowl? 😀
My mouth is hanging open! Absolutely stunning!!!
Thank you so much! 😀
So you start with a lump of wood that, in all honesty belonged on a fire. (It had so many bits of stone and soil that it would probably have been dangerous even to burn!) You then turn it into a thing of beauty that would look good anywhere!
Congratulations, Sir! This is exemplary work!
Thanks so much, it took a little work but I loved working on it 🙂
Hands down the coolest wood turning ever. Did not know such a thing existed.
Thanks so much Joslyn 😀
I love this piece! I have always had a special affinity for cherry but this is just stunning!! Very impressive from beginning to the finished item. ❤
Thank you so much Sandy 😃
Watched it a second time and still love it…. Well , the wood was there already , all you did was add a little epoxy , then cut away the unnecessary bits and you have a beautiful vase . You do quality work, I was a cabinet maker once , I can say that.
Thanks so much, that means a lot! Not sure I have the patience or skill for proper woodwork but this I can do as long as I'm never asked for two of the same thing 😂
Absolutely beautiful colors together looks like purple heart wood
Thanks Daniel 😀
Gorgeous piece! Who knew that gem was in that bundle of wood,
I just love working with roots, you always get something unusual 😁
The color contrast between the color of the wood and the resin is very beautiful
Thanks so much, all the best, Mike 😀
I love seeing the moment when the design forms in your mind. Your approach becomes very deliberately gentle. Such talent to create marvelous works of art!
Thank you so much Cynthia 😀
When you started with the root, I thought how could you possibly take us through. I’m glad I hung in there. Beautiful finish…well done.
Thanks John, my old videos tend to be a bit long but I'm getting better with the editing and format, all the best, Mike
I normally do not like resin loaded turnings. But in this piece you used in a way that does not overwhelm. Nice piece, nice work!
Thank you very much Robert 😀
Wow that is lovely! Red is my favourite colour! Thanx for the 'au natural' vdo showing Joe Blog what to do when you don't have a pressure pot.
You are so welcome! they are useful but also very expensive! All the best, Mike 🙂
Hands down the most beautiful wood turning I've ever seen. You have skills.
Wow, thank you Carolyn, so nice of you to say, all the best, Mike 😃
12:30 Dec 29, 2023 I really enjoyed this project. I am new to turning. My 150 year old rolling pin hand carved by my great grandfather for his bride was lost in a fire, so I decided my daughter, grandchildren, and great grandchildren need one. So I am going to make them all one so far that is 7 rolling pins. Hope to have more great grandchildren. Any way loved the cherry root beautiful piece. 🎉
That is a beautiful idea Carol, I wonder if any of my kids or grandkids will pass on my work? All the best, Mike 😀
Wow fantastic 👏 👌 transformation with the resin and turning, super end Product ❤❤❤
Thanks so much 😊
Amazing that something so incredibly beautiful could be made from that scraggly looking rootball. In addition to being gifted artist maybe you are also a root whisperer. 😊
haha thanks Cecilia 😀
Stunning, simply stunning!
Thank you! Cheers James 😀
@@MikeHolton You're welcome mate
Really loving the contrast!! It's amazing how you can see the potential from just a messy root ball.
Thanks, I love to look at any type of wood, any size of shape and think about what it could become 😀
Wow! The red-gold is just perfect with that wood, echoing back that is cherry (and I think of red). Gorgeous vase!
Thanks so much, I'm thinking of trying this again 😀
Very creative use of cherry colored resin with a cherry rootball👍
Thank you so much Elmer 😊
Fabulous vase that would grace any home ! 🤩

Wow. I love the contrast between the resin and the wood.

I really like the pattern that the resin made, it’s almost like a static lava lamp
Thanks Jayne and I think you are right about the pattern 😀
Beautiful, pleasing choices of resin colors.
Thank you so much 😀
Absolutely gorgeous! Well done, and great video as well. 'Beauty shots' he said.... they certainly were beautiful!
Thank you very much David, I keep catching my Mother-In-Law trying to smuggle this out the house 😂
This is so pretty I kind of wish you'd kept the base on it - it showed the roof floating in resin - very very nice piece
Thanks, perhaps next time 😃
Absolutely beautiful. I would be proud to have that in my home.
Thank you very much Martha, this is one piece I won't let go, not even my mother in law can have it, and believe me she's tried 😀
