Woodturning - ebonised oak bowl with aluminium resin inlay

- Опубликовано: 2 окт 2024
- In this woodturning video I turn an ebonised oak bowl inlaid with aluminium swarf. The swarf is set into a black epoxy resin and then turned flat and polished. Ebonising is the technique of blackening wood.
This woodturning channel, explores the uses of wood when combined with resin, epoxy, to make woodturning projects, that are easy and can be classed as art. A lot of the wood turning projects I make can be completed by the beginner through to the more experienced wood turner. If you have any ideas for artwork, wood inlays, epoxy projects please get in touch. Collaborations are always welcomes.

Definitely like the contrast with keeping the natural on the inside
Thanks Mark, after all this time this is still a favourite of mine 😀
I think oak is my favourite wood. Good decision to keep the natural wood on the inside , great contrast . A great looking bowl once again Mike. I’m watching old videos ans
Do gosh you’ve come a long way in a short time developing your videos . Thank you for entertaining us. 😊
Thanks Bev, I do try hard to keep improving the quality wherever I can 😁
Brilliant - Greetings from Germany.
Thanks Claus, and welcome to the channel 😊
I like it with the inside left natural. Lookls great as a finished product......love the aluminum inlay!
Thanks so much 😀
Beautiful contrast with the ebonized oak and the natural oak grain, and the inlaid aluminum swarf turned out amazing....... reminds me of a Native American style flute I made out of Padauk with turned rings at each end that I inlaid crushed turquoise with bits of copper wire together.
Wow sounds beautiful! Many thanks and all the best, Mike
I like the contrast better than all ebonized. Ebonizing the outside edge only and leaving the inner edge and entire inside would also be nice.
Thanks Wayne, I will be doing another ebonised bowl in the next few months, a friend of mine is developing a new solution and want me to give it a go 😊, all the best, Mike
Mike, you are my favorite new site to follow. I particularly like your creativity. It inspires and echos my own. Beautiful work!
Bill W.
Wow, thank you Bill, when I first started this channel I never thought I would be on someone's favourites list, really appreciate it 😀
Gorgeous! Love watching your videos across the pond.
Thanks so much Lisa 😀
Nice one, greeting from Bali
Thanks, and greetings from the UK
What an interesting journey. From conception to conclusion all whilst turning a piece of wood. Amazing fifnish. I would have given it a medium stainbut to be fair it looks brilliant. I also dont watch just to be in the draw, I just enjoy the how a piece of work turns into a piece of art and also a piece of useful home ware. Great Video.
Thank you very much peter and so glad you enjoyed it for what it is. All the best, Mike
Beautiful job
Thank you! 😊
We are a gang of thirst viewers🤪🤣😗😅💕🇬🇧
Haha thanks Maud 😀
Just beautiful
Thanks Ian 😀
Ótimo canal estou inciando na profissão e são boas dicas parabéns.
Muito obrigado e boa sorte com seu progresso
I like the contrast between outside, inside and inlay. Nice work!!!
Thank you! Cheers Ken 😀
I'm torn, it's great looking natural, but I really wanted to see what it would have looked like.
I know what you mean 😃
Beautiful in design and contrast Mike.
So glad I have found your channel but trying my hardest not to binge watch as don't want to finish all quickly and then have to wait for the next video lol!
Thank you for sharing your art and skill with us.
Haha no worries Fiona and thanks so much for your support. Don't go too far back as I was a bit ropey at the start 😂
I know I am 10 months late to the party but I only discovered your channel the same day I am writing this. This is absolutely beautiful. You made the right choice by leaving the interior natural. Excellent contrast to the ebonized exterior.

Welcome aboard Tom and thanks so much for taking the time to comment. This is still one of my favourite bowls, I sold it a good while ago but wish I'd kept it, oh well you can't keep them all. Thanks for subscribing and if you have any suggestions please let me know, all the best, Mike
@@MikeHolton I came across your channel because I follow a talented woodworker and I think one of your videos was suggested off to the right of my screen.
Have a look at his inlay work if you are looking how another person does his.
All the best, Mike!

Hello Mike , you are happy man , when you to buy new lathe Power Record ...
Thanks it's a great lathe, I've had it just over a year now
Hey Mike, Stunning bowl with beautiful contrasts. Liked and Subbed
Aston @IWMS
Thanks Aston, I appreciate it :) you will have a chance of winning a bowl at 1000 subscribers. Good Luck
Beautiful. I wish I would have thought of making it.
You can do it! :)
Yeah, in my opinion the natural inside definitely the right choice, looks really great. The contrast looks fantastic. And the aluminum and black epoxy looked really well matched with the ebonized wood. Great job!
Thanks John 😀
I tried turning a bowl in shop when I was in the sixth grade. I think my gouge got In a hurry and the bowl went in about a hundred different directions. Now I'm 66 years old and your videos have awaken the idea of trying again. Thank you.
You are more than welcome Warren, I was the same as you, I turned at school and did not try it again till about 3 years ago. 😀
The ebony needs a high gloss finish
Thanks for your opinion 😀
I'm looking and would like to know the product you used to ebonise the oak
Hi Ken, I make the solution myself. The basis of this is leaving iron filings in white vinegar for a few weeks. You can take a quality of this and add to it some water mixed with iron 2 sulphate. Full instructions can be found here ruclips.net/video/Par5VWd-Yao/видео.html&ab_channel=RobertMurray-Smith
Wow! Such a beautiful bowl definitely made the right choice leaving the inside :)
Glad you think so too 😁
What a beautiful combination of materials and colors. I like the natural interior as a contrast. Subscribing to see more creations!
Thanks Sharon, welcome to the channel 😊
Looks amazing , awesome job, and keep up the work and I will keep watching for new videos. Very talented.
Thanks Aaron, I really appreciate your support 😃
I know it’s an old video but thanks for the reminder on ebonizing. I’ve not done any ebonizing since the early 90’s when I used to restore antiques. I learned it back in the 70’s. I’ve got some spalted oak I need to pull out and give it a go. The embellishment really brought the WoW factor and I’m glad you didn’t ebonize the inside. Stunning piece!!!
You are so welcome and thanks 😁
I just discovered your channel last night, and am now binge-watching! It's completely mesmerizing.
Since you sold this beauty (and wish you hadn't), try another one, and ebonize the inside as well as the outside. That will make the edge really stand out! Black, white, inlay, white, black.
Hi Susan, I may just do that 😁 thanks 👍
My first time watching wood ebonizing…it gives this piece a unique look a the inlay is the perfect accent…love it…👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you very much Loraine 😀
Yummy! It's aluminium porridge on the rim! The bowl is fabulous! It's not the same, even by a long shot, but I have some press board pieces here with an ebonized oak and silver print, that I want to work with. I also love to just look at it. When time and money comes, I'll try the real deal!
Thanks Claus 😊
You might consider taping the inside of the bowl as well as the outside before adding the aluminum and resin mixture. That black pigment can stain the wood. It may not master with this bowl, presuming you will ebonize the interior.
Thanks that's a good idea 😊
Lovely bowl w/ the inlay and matching finish.
edit: I liked the natural oak on the inside. Whereas the silver wax made the exterior I think you could have skipped the inside, and is it food safe?
Thank you very much and yes I could have skipped the inside. Yes it is food safe 😀
Absolutely Gorgeous!
I thought you mentioned a link for making the blackening fluid? Did I miss something?
I thought I had put it in the description, sorry, here it is: ruclips.net/video/Par5VWd-Yao/видео.html&ab_channel=RobertMurray-Smith
I adore this piece. The contrast of the ebonized wood and its light grain is echoed in the black epoxy and aluminum pieces. I was rooting for you to do the inside natural. You hit it out of the ballpark. 🎉
Wow thanks so much Linda 😀
love the finished bowl. I've used resin when I have dug out bark inclusions but never thought of aluminium swarf. Top job.
Thanks 👍
I think leaving the interior natural was a good choice, though I'd like to have seen contrast between the interior, the top edge, and the exterior. Maybe a subject cost of the ebonizing liquid on the inside, or a light stain inside, natural rim?
There are so many things I could have tried and will try on the future 😀
Hi Mike, I am currently going through your “back catalogue” of videos. I think you made the right decision not to ebonise the interior of this bowl, the silver highlight did not really show on camera but I am sure looked good.
Thanks, you are right about the silver, it did not add anything lol
I like the contrasts of black and natural . I was pleased when you decided not to ebonise the interior. Why didn’t you place aluminium in then put epoxy on. You wasted so much aluminium with the left over epoxy.
Thanks Greg, as I said in the video, if I had put the aluminium in first then added the resin it could have created a lot of air pockets so I wanted to saturate it first. As I don't have a pressure pot I have to do what I can to minimise problems that could be faced later.
Really enjoyed watching this one and love the finished bowl. Your helpful tips are spot on advice for a novice like myself. Thank you
Your welcome Rachel, this is another piece I wish I had not sold, I think I may have to make another 😀
Great craftsmanship, video is clear , but your audio needs working.. could not understand most of what you were saying
Thanks for the feedback, I'll do what I can to make it better, please bear with me, still pretty new to this RUclips gig.
It's nice to see you have started out on the lumberjack lathe, the same as mine. I will also be copying this bowl , it is within my skill set . thanks again teacher.
No problem John, please let me know how you get on
Absolutely fantastic. Watching from South Africa.
Thanks so much Patricia 😊
Maybe the outer lip of the bowl could have been ebonies giving the illusion of one bowl inside another? I really like this piece.
Wow that's a good idea ☺️ thanks 👍
So beautiful, God amazing piece of art perfection 😊thank you 😊
Thank you so much 😀
stunning job, Mike perfect choice to leave the inside natural IMHO
Thanks! 😀
Nice job! i want to have a go on oak, done a few oak spindle bits but a i want to use my intrinsic colours on an oak bowl, oak looks great with colour imo, thanks for the inspiration!
Go for it! Let me know how you get on please :)
I didn’t think I would like the color due to the fact I love the light wood with the grain contrast but this is absolutely beautiful
Thanks Gloria 🙂 this is still one of my favourites
Gorgeous!
Brilliant design and decisions. Love the contrasts.
Glad you like it! 😀
I think this is the prettiest piece you've done since I've been watching your channel!
Wow, thank you Leslie, all the best, Mike
Yes the right choice leaving interior natural. Beautiful. ❤❤
Thanks John, I think the silver wax I put in the centre was a little pointless but we try these things 😅
The ebonizing here is absolutely gorgeous! One of my favorite descriptions of this kind of color is "raven blue". Makes me wonder how it might look with a pearly wax of other raven hues into an iridescent effect. Plum, purple, violet, indigo, azure, lime, green, gold, etc.
Ever tried straining anything with coffee or tea? I wonder what would happen if you soaked something in oversteeped tea, getting all those bitter tannens, then tried to ebonize.
Oh wow, I'm adding this to my list of projects to do, thanks so much!!! With regards to the tea, the tannins in the tea are a natural ebonising fluid, the one I use has tea and a few extra chemicals in there like iron 2 sulphate to make it really black. All the best, Mike
@@MikeHolton Ahhh, thanks for the info again! And you're absolutely welcome again as well. Love helping any way I can! ♥
Hi ,where did you the aluminium from, love black colour.
Thanks Andy, I got it from eBay, just search for aluminium swarf. All the best, Mike
Definitely liked it without! The contrast is beautiful !
Thanks Denise ☺️
I am glad you left it natural looking on the inside, it looks fabulous in my opinion.
Thanks so much Max 😀
Beautiful project, well done Mike!
Thanks Scott, this was a fun project I may revisit soon as I have a few more ideas.
You has inspired me to expand my hobbies from 3d printing and laser engraving to wood turning. What advice would you offer as to Lath choice??
Sorry my comment was not compleye, somehow i lost half of it, i said watching you and your beautiful work has inspired me to expand my hobby interest from 3d printing, laser cutting and engraving. To wood turning. What sort of lath are you using or what would you recommend for tools and lath? Thank you so much for making these videos.
Hi Lawrence, as lathes are expensive and at present you are not completely sure you will enjoy it I would look out for local second hand lathes being sold by people giving up or upgrading. Look for packages that include tools etc as everything can get expensive. If you see something and want advice feel free to email me. mike@mikeholton.net
BOM dia de muito sucesso FICOU muito LINDA esta peça
Obrigado, adorei fazer este.
Absolutely stunning. Better on the second run. ❤❤❤
Thank you! 😊
Nicely done sir! I myself would've taped the inner edge too when filling out the inlay just because I can overfill then trim back. But I'm a bit of a klutz and sometimes subtlety is not my forte..😜 that embellishing wax really accentuated the chatoyance in the grain.
Thanks! I'm fairly ham fisted as well but have learned patients, plus I know I can clean out the inside fairly easy 😊
This is spectacular! I like the decision to not ebonize the inside. This project gives me thoughts of Martin Saban-Smith and Peter Brown.
Wow that is probably the best compliment I could ever have! Thanks
I really like what you did with this blank
Thanks John, that makes two of us 🙂
I’m pleased to say that I’m pleasantly surprised at the results of the swarf and resin finish! Great job Mike. ❤
Thank you Louis 🙂
Another beauty, Mike!
Thanks my friend 😀
Really enjoyed this video.
Thanks 👍
Never seen a video like this and yours is the first. Very interesting and genius with the aluminum inlayed in the rim. Fantastic piece. Cheers
Thanks Randy, I appreciate your comments .
Beautiful! Right choice
Thank you! 😊
Excellent. I love the colors.
Thanks 👍
Don’t pick on ur wife😎
Haha, I would not dare 😃
Only just found your videos, you do some very interesting work. I’m very impressed
Thanks Greg 😁
I need that spinning device
They are fun to play with ☺️
I love that bowl. Great job
Thanks Donna, I do too 😀
I like the contrast
Thanks Alan, this bowl seems so long ago now but it's still one of my favourites 😃
Looks great. Love the contrast and the design. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks Jude, glad you liked it.
Absolutely gorgeous bowl! Glad you left the inside natural. You do beautiful work. I love this black bowl. Do you have a shop? Thank you so very much for sharing your work.
A Florida friend and subscriber.
❤😎🙃
Hi Dotty, thanks for the comments. I do not have a shop yep but plan to soon but it will be low quantity high quality pieces. I do have a few pieces for on display and for sale in Heartlepool Art Gallery if you are ever over this way. Also I take commissions so if there is anything you see on the channel you like it may still be available or I can make something similar to your taste.
Love the ebonized effect.
@@ROCK_COLLECTOR_64 thanks 😊
Why is your piece? Not round? It is lopsided. It is a very nice looking piece.
Thanks but I'm not sure what you mean lol
@@MikeHolton when you were putting the finish on it look like it was spinning lopsided like it was off-center
It looked almost oval
But I really like the bowl it was really nice
@@robertkurilla7859 thanks! It does look a bit like that, the lathe and chuck I was using back then were not great quality so could quite easily be a little off 😀
Nice job Mike. The oak is perfect for ebonizing and it turned out great.
Thanks David, I really enjoyed this one
Stunning!!
Thanks Gary 😀
Stunning! 🎉
