Woodturning - Yew Won't Be Expecting This!

- I love working with Yew but didn't know how I wanted this piece to look before I started to get into the turn. Yew always has such amazing character and I wanted to try something a little different, which is why I added the 4 "legs" in the middle of the piece. I hope they become some point a talking point and the focus of this piece, I especially like the differences in finish between the two areas, and how natural they look compared to the top and bottom sections.
The piece has been sanded to 1000 grit and finished with Danish oil, sanding sealer, and wood wax.

My videos are for entertainment purposes only. Some of my techniques might not be the "best" or safest, so when using any tool or machinery always read and understand safety/manufacturers guidelines first.
And Yes, I'm aware that wearing gloves while woodturning is considered an unsafe practice. The gloves I wear are tight-fitting and don’t have any loose threads. I wear them for the protection of my skin. This is a risk that I am willing to take, however I am still very conscious of the potential danger and I do not touch any spinning parts of the lathe. DO NOT copy my actions if you feel unsafe doing so. - Хобби

They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I seem to be suffering from an Optrex overdose on this one.
A Gothic masterpiece Harry
Good stuff ! 👌
I love the irregular carving in the center! It looks like a vine!
Very beautiful piece sir have a great day
Hello Harry this piece if Yew looks awesome the grain and the colours in it really set this piece of wood off. The cup is magnificent and unique. I give you 10 out of 10. Amanda xx
Beautiful cup Harry!
I love yew, the woods quite nice too😂😂😂😂😂 seriously though I’ve used this wood a few times, not only does it look nice with all the colours but smells great too, off to watch
Yew are right! I love this.
Thank you very much Rebecca! What do you think of the 4 legs? Should I do another with fewer? 😊
I like the 4 legs, but 3 would be awesome!@@HarrySmithWoodturning
The cup part is nice and elegant. From there down seems a bit clunky. The two parts don't seem to match.
awesome and wellya just got ur 1000th like from me
Fascinating to watch take shape. Not related, except the wood, but my favorite yew creation was from an artist that carved a female sheep. Sign said it was a "yew ewe for you".
I enjoy your channel.
😂😂😂
What a great idea! 👍💪✌
Thank you! What do you think of the 4 legs? Should I do another with fewer? 😊
@@HarrySmithWoodturning That would be nice, maybe even more twisted if possible?
Super nice work brother, totally wicked, came out awesome.
Maestro.
Thank you! What do you think of the 4 legs? Should I do another with fewer? 😊
Если это всё из дерева, то я никогда такого не сделаю! Мастеру- класс!👍
Wow!!! Yew're right ✅ 👌 🤣 😮
Thank YEW SOL! Did you like the twisted stem? Should I do another with fewer legs, what do you think? 😁👍
I loved it Harry! 🤔 How about three legs but twisted like a loose knot?
Stunning! Enjoyed watching your creation take shape.
Thank you Very much! Did you like the twisted stem? Should I do another with fewer legs, what do you think? 😁👍
@@HarrySmithWoodturning I did like the twisted legs and it was cool to see how you achieved the look. As to more or less, I leave that to your creativity. Obviously you can see possibilities in the wood that I can't imagine. It's probably why I find stone statues intriguing...how did the creator see that in a block of stone.
Muy lindo trabajo, y esa madera que belleza!!!!👏👏👏💖💖💖🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷
Very special
Wow!😊
Thank you Martin! What do you think of the 4 legs? Should I do another with fewer? 😊
That's really beautiful. ❤❤🎉🎉
❤very creative and unique. Love it❤
Thank you very much Audie! What do you think of the 4 legs? Should I do another with fewer? 😊
Beautiful!
Excelente resultado, parabéns !
Thank you Ronaldo! Did you like the twisted stem? Should I do another with fewer legs? 😁👍
Beautiful Harry, happy new year!
Great job on the cup but aren’t fabric gloves dangerous to wear when turning?
Yew do yew.
Drilling the legs sacrificed beautiful grain.
I like how they speed up the camera to dull how long it takes. Also editing each process to make it look like it got completed in one session, not several days.
Would you please tell me what you’re using on the rag? Oil, polish or shine juice. You use it alot and I’m learning an awful a lot from you. I enjoy all your videos and like I said learn a lot from you. Too bad you’re across the pond. 😂
Hi Harry, what oil are you finishing off with?
Spectacular Harry👍
What finish do u use? I know it's a type of.wax.....
Thanks
King Arthur's Chalice?
I see those gloves and just think of what might happen. The end result of your piece is beautiful though.
Beautiful! I do not understand the need for more "grinding" after the middle section was done, I would have thought it would have been risky to lathe more off after those thin strands were completed!
That’s the thing about artistic people, their vision of the finished piece changes continuously.
Don’t like the knot holes in the cup. Would certainly leak. Just an ornamental piece, I guess.
What is that??
I reckon a Goblet, sometimes people turn them with rings from the material around the stem so you can't get them off unless you great them, around the stem, the most I've seen is 3 rings, and I saw one that had 3 spiral stems like this each individual yet all twisting the same, I hope that helped
Cheers 🍻

The branches in the middle.. NO.... The grain was so beautiful and lost on your attempt to make branches 😢
I gotta ask, why?
Poor choice of wood the crack’s will open up over time
Nice effort, but you made two mistakes!! First you chose the wrong wood full of cracks and second mistake the branches in the middle you made are dissimilar to each other, he wanted more attention to the sanding and sandpaper that you would pass through!!! But keep loving what you do and you will improve!!! Hello from Stuttgart!!!!
