The Wicked Root Ball Wood Turning

  • One of the hardest things to turn on a wood lathe is a root ball.
This is a Camellia root ball and the wood was very hard.
Lots of cracks and vides to deal with but it turned into a real beauty.
Finished with Zinsser Seal Coat and Zinsser Shellac.

Gary very often, less is more and that was very evident with this piece. You let nature shine with this one and that was obviously the right choice. Beautiful piece.

Wow! Haha, I thought you might have lost your marbles again when I first saw that thing, Gary! I was amazed at how much solid wood was under all those little roots, twigs, mud and what not. I love everything you did to this piece. Perfect design, you stopped at the right point so as not to erase what Mother Nature had spent years perfecting. I know this was a lot of work but, from this end of things, it was totally worth all you put into it. Really nice piece, my friend! I'm impressed! Keep'em coming, buddy! 😊

Thanks so much Phil. If I had not watched you tackle the root balls you have done I am not sure if I would have even turned this piece that looked like it had no hope at all.
Then I looked at the poor thing that waited so long and thought about my son wondering if the old man would ever actually do it I said ok today is the day!
Inspired but all you have done and not wanting to let my son down I did it and am very happy with the results.
And he will betting his root ball back soon. I need to at least have a week with it to actually look at everything that is there.
Sometimes you just can not take it all in even after turning it.
Thanks again for how you inspire all of us my friend!

Hello Gary. For many years I've been following the most diverse wood turners in the world on RUclips, and I've caught the wood turning virus myself. I have around 100 subscribers spread around the world. Your channel is one of five, I stress five, that I've turned the bell on. This means that you are one of my absolute favorites in terms of craftsmanship, sympathy, feeling for form and design and, last but not least, the likeable demeanor. And this video is proof of that once again. From a heavy piece of root wood, which is of course a great challenge, you make a very decent turned object. But that's not the only thing that excites me, it's the fact that you let the holey and uneven beauty of this piece work, yes, that you don't try to smooth out all the bumps and natural gaps with this terrible epoxy, but that you try to imperfection in its perfection. In my eyes this is art. Thank you for this wonderful video and for all the previous ones. Many greetings and my greatest respect from the far north of Germany. Schorschi

That is a really cool turning. I love the rough rustic look of it. Just a suggestion maybe when you trimmed the root ball up instead of really dulling or wrecking a chainsaw chain you could have used a Sawzall with a long Demo blade on it ? Looking at it I think that is the way I would have tried to trim it up. But sometimes I am wrong, seemed like a good idea at the time. LOL. Great video, and thanks for your very thorough explanations on how you were going about that turning.

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  Год назад

Thank you John, happy you like it.
Trust me my chain was very dull when I cut the root ball up. I normally just put new ones on instead of sharpening them. It is a small electric and the chains do not cost all that much.
But I like your idea of using a Sawzall. I have one but I do not have a long Demo blade. Might be a good idea to pick one up.

As always, enjoyed this video Gary. BTW, thank you for not epoxying that piece of wood. That, in my opinion, would have taken away from the uniqueness of the piece of art. Even the chainsaw marks give it quite a bit of character. Nicely done! Also, isn't it great to do things such as camping, fishing, and other outdoor adventures with the Grands?
