Hello Phil, Goodness gracious. Each of your pieces is unique, but this one is 'first among equals'. When you first displayed it to the camera, I thought, "Dave at Calmwood has sent a wooden statue of Cthulhu - what is Phil going to make of that?" Then, you worked your magic on it, and now it looks like an exotic jungle flower; something awfully special and rare. My mother said that it started as a root ball and ended resembling a pleasure boat shaped like a swan.
Either way, you have once again proven that you can make art out of firewood. ;-). Many thanks to Dave for seeing promise in that piece and sending it to you.

I have a few favourites among the RUclips wood turners. They all make very different wood art (yeah it is art, when turning something impossible into something beautiful).
I especially like your videos and your way of keeping the wood as close to its natural form as possible. That way what comes out is REALLY art!
And I love the way you explain how you are thinking when working on it. Your smile shines through your talk even if we don’t see you in the videos.
When I started watching this video I first thought it was going to be a fail. But then I thought “he has made many impossible wood things into wonderful creations before, so I will just trust this one will also be nice.”
And after much work the end result is interesting, beautiful and fun.
I imagine one of those old writing desks that my father had, with old time writing stuff on top. A letter press, a small bowl with clips, a container for pens and pencils, eraser rubbers, perhaps ink for the very old-fashioned writer, and so on. Each utility thing on top of the desk also is a piece of art and decorates the working space.
This lovely wood creation that you have made would be fitting on a desk like that, as a container for something and also a beautiful decoration.
    ❤❤❤❤❤
    Love from Sweden

      Thanks Phil.
Well, my dad is dead since 12 years. He would have been 103 years old if he was living. My parents sold the house, my birth home where I grew up, in 2000. And they also sold the desk that I told about. It hurt a lot to not be able to come back for visits in that lovely house in the small village Hästveda, in southern Sweden. But the family who bought the house in 2000 still lives there. I got in contact with them a couple of years ago, and I visited twice. They kept all the nice old things that my father built.
You know, my father was a carpenter/builder and his speciality was to renovate old houses in the old fashioned way. He made open fire places with natural stones. He was a bit like you, wanted the nature created wood and stones be the way nature created it. That is probably why I am so fascinated by watching RUclips clips of woodworking and wood turning.
I spent my whole life in music, as a musician and singing teacher, but am retired now since just a few days ago. So I have more time watching wood turning videos now 😉
I would like to work with wood as a hobby but I live in a flat and can’t rent a workshop. And of course I know more or less nothing about the skill. Looked for some course in wood working but there is nothing of that sort close by.
Anyway, I enjoy watching and will continue doing so for as long as there are videos of it on RUclips. 😸
My real name is Cristin. Trincia Cakewalk is my online name since almost the beginning of Internet. There you got some more info about one of your viewers/subscribers. 😺

Hi Phil! Am at the "Mask and face shield on" point. Wow. Am amazed at how you figured everything out! Trèz cool. Can't wait to see what this thing is gonna turn into!! The suspense is real.
"Therrrrrre once was an ugly duckling
With branches all stubby and brown
And the other birds, in so many words
Said pbrrrrt! Get out of town.
Pbrrrt, get out, Pbrrrt, pbrrrt, get out
Pbrrrt, pbrrrt, get out of town.
And he went, with crack branch
    That waddled pre-CA
In a flurry of chips going down.
    All through the turning,
    'Mid his lovely ShadyTrees
Till the final turn happened there
    And Watchers soon agreed
You're a very fine swan indeed!
A swan? Me, a swan? Ah gaouwan"
A song my Pop sang to me long ago.
    Happy Father's Day Pop.
    Happy Father's Day, Phil.

Oh, yeah, I must have had the same shop teacher, Tuffy! I was always getting in trouble as an example not to follow. So glad you approve of the rest of the video, buddy, thank you! 😊

Nice piece as usual. Thank You very much, I had several occasions that I needed to remove a lot of wood to achieve my profile I was looking for. I had completely forgot about using my angle grinder. When I went to look for it I was like you, I discovered I had THREE of them, how soon we forget about the helpful tools we have. It really made short work achieving the profile I was looking for. Followed it with my 2in sander, I had fairly good results. It was getting pretty thin I had to glue some bark back on and a limb that was protruding out. Thanks for the tip, it saved a lot of sanding time. KEEP ON TURNING

The "wings of the top" finished up very natural almost drift wood natural, well done. I wasn't expecting an angle grinder, thought you grab a Dremel type tool.

    Beautiful Phil, just beautiful.
Thank you so much for the information on how you plan where to mount for turning and what to do to make it easier but not take too much away from the piece.
Great video my friend and one I'm keeping for future reference.
    Take care Phil.
    Cheers, Huw

Lovely art piece, the shape, color and the look of it are totally unique and I think most turners would use some resin to finish it, but you saw something different! Well done and thanks!
    Cheers Al

I cannot believe you do not sell your pieces! I am sure there are plenty of places in your state that you could sell them and get a nice price for them. Putting them on your own website would be more difficult and more expensive. You should consider selling some of your pieces. I would love to have one. Now whether I could afford one or not are two separate issues but I know there are plenty of folks that would love one of your pieces of art and could afford it.
I still have a while before I’ve caught up to watching all your episodes but I love each one!

I would love to sell some of my work, Alice and I agree, locally is the best way for me. There are farmers markets, etc. around. The problem for all of that is time. It takes everything I've got to get one video recorded and edited each week. Maybe one day I'll have a helper. I'm so glad you are spending some of your time with me and making comments. Thank you! 😊
