Wood Turning The Live Edge Drift Boat Bowl

- A nice piece of Pear with a live edge ends up looking like a stubby drift boat. Well at least it looked while I was holding it to show.
Finished with Zinsser Seal Coat and Zinsser Shellac. Acks abrasive paste to polish it lightly.

This is a great live edge bowl. I have not watched it before. I always enjoy watching and hearing your problem solving process because it teaches me so much. I hope your physical therapy is going well.
Thank you very much and sorry for the late reply. Had an ankle injury.
Gary
Lovely bowl Gary, that pear has such nice color and tight grain! The bowl looks like a young bird with his mouth open! Well done and thanks!
Cheers Al
Thank you Al. I sure would not want to mess with that young birds momma lol.
Thanks for watching.
Gary
Nice piece, Gary. Traditional turning teaches to keep the two wings of a natural edge bowl in the same plane but this piece begs to be different. Great job in keeping your knuckles safe! LOL
Thank you Tom, happy you liked it. I must have skipped that class where that was taught. Oh wait I never took any of those classes LOL.
As soon as I decided it was time to turn it and took a much better look and like how it looked and decided to try and keep it that way.
Thanks for watching my friend,
Gary
Very nice bowl. Enjoy all your videos and appreciate how you explain what and why you are doing certain things. I started turning after I retired and have learned so much from all you veteran turners on U Tube. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you very much Jim and thank you for your comments.
Have a great time turning,
Gary
Thorough enjoyed the video, Gary. I love your work and appreciate you having me around. You make it look easy. 🌞
Thank you very much Ray. I appreciate your comments and always nice having you watch my videos.
Take care,
Gary

Thank you very much Grammy Bear!!!
Thank You Gary...Nice solid piece of Pear. No cracks.... I watch & I think to myself "Gary must be relaxing with a simple turning before he dives into one of his wild & crazy dizzy contortions" HA...I love all you do Gary...and...sometimes I can follow and understand the process, sometimes not 😁.....Very nice live edge turning this morning & until next time..... TM
Thanks so much TM. You always make my morning reading your comments. And you seemed to have read my mind because I am just heading out to start another mind bender. But it will not be done for a few weeks.
Take care my friend,
Gary
Beautiful bowl. The shape reminds me of pictures of merchant ships from the time of Jesus. All it needs is a mast. So Cool!
Thank you Judith. I love that image.
Take care,
Gary
I really do like the shape, what comes to mind is a Victorian lounging bathtub. The color and finish are very nice.
Thank you very much. Yes it probably does look more like the bathtub than a drift boat. But this is a stubby version of the drift boat I have.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Great job Gary, live edge bark is always a challenge.
Thanks Ronald. It was kind of layered and felt like it could flake off but it hung in there.
Thanks for watching.
Gary
I think it's perfect. It's a beautiful piece. I love turning pear. Thanks for all you do!
Thank you Garry. I have turned other pear as well. But this I think has been the prettiest.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Beautiful bowl, Gary! I think I would have preferred a smaller base, but I really like the shape you ended up with, so maybe not. The fun of woodturning is letting the wood speak as you did here. Too often, I fail to listen. Glad you do! Thanks!
Thank you Greg. I recall after making cut so smooth it hardly needed sanding and thought I was done. Then I looked it over and took more off. But that was all I could see taking off. Never know till you do but I do know you can not put it back on.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
It's the right season for drift boats. When is it the wrong season to be out in a boat?! Nice job, Gary! I surely do like those tall-winged, live-edge bowls...
Take care,
--Paul
Thank you Paul! Well being in a boat fishing is always a great day. When there is some catching it is even better.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
I like it , you’re working with what the good lord gave you. Awesome job.
Amen to that my friend. That is where everything comes from.
Take care,
Gary
A lot of skill and experience required to hang onto the natural edge. Well done!
Thank you very much. I appreciate your comment and thanks for watching.
Gary
Great piece, Gary. Glad it stayed together, other than the one piece of bark. Good work!
Thank you Jay. I was happy I could find that piece and it was still just one piece.
Thanks for watching
Gary
Very beautiful Gary, keep up the great work. Love the variety you share with us!!!
Thank you Mark. Happy you enjoyed it and I have a few different things coming up.
Take care,
Gary
This is what I love! The shape, the bark and the turned portions epitomize natural edge turning. Excellent job! But don't make Phil over at Shady Acres too jealous!
Thank you very much Robert. I appreciate your comments and I am sure Phil will be happy to see it. He has inspired all of us with all the nature he turns.
Thanks for watcing,
Gary
Phil isn't the jealous type.
Hey Gary, I think it is beautiful the way it is. You did an amazing job. Yall have a wonderful day.
Thank you very much Allyn. Glad you like liked it.
Take care,
Gary
Good looking boat I mean bowl wait boat bowl yeah that's it LoL 😂😂 thank you for sharing stay safe friend 👍👍👍👍
Thank you very much. Yeah I like that I should have called it the Blue Boat Bowl. My drift boat is blue on the inside LOL.
Take care buddy,
Gary
Very nice! It almost reminds me of a baby birds mouth opened up.
Thank you Keven and for sure it could be called a birds mouth bowl now that you mention it.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Boy, I was feeling this thing the whole way, Gary! Those long wings just make everything so much more difficult. But, you mastered it and got a great bowl with a great finish! I love that you were able to keep that beautiful bark on. Such a great contrast with the finished wood. Really enjoyable video if you like edge of your seat videos! LOL! Nice job, buddy, keep'em coming! 😄
Phil
Thanks Phil! I know for sure you knew how I was feeling while sneaking up on that bark. Thinking at any minute all of it would just fall off.
I know the Sand-O-Flex sure made it look a lot better. It was very dry and dusty feeling but for sure like you said the contrast with the wood is pretty cool. I kept saving this piece for the right day. Now to find the other half of it LOL. I know it is out there somewhere.
Thanks for watching my friend,
Gary
Papa,
Poifect!
Keep the aspidistra flying!
Paul
Thank you Paul. Happy you like it. I sure enjoyed turning it.
Take care,
Gary
I have been turning some pear that was storm damaged and taken down by my neighbor. I find it a hard dense wood, that with a sharp gouge, almost doesn't need much sanding. I really like your treatment of this piece. Very artistic!
Thank you Jim. I have turned Pear from different types of pear trees. This did not seem all that hard but it sure did cut nice.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
I love it. I'm not a drift boat guy but I troll on the Alsea river and see alot of drift boats. It does look like one.
Thank you Ken! I used to have a 22 foot cuddy cabin boat and fished the ocean off the Columbia River. As well as the Zoo known as Buoy 10 as well as for springers on the Willamette.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
looks like an old fasioned bath tube great work
Thank you Neil. Yes it does look like a bath tube. And it is a bit short for a drift boat. At least for me to use LOL.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Gary, I think it’s perfect just the way it is. Beautiful job
Thank you Russ! I appreciate you watching and letting me know your choice.
Take care,
Gary
Good evening, Gary.
Your pear bowl looks fantastic. A friend of mine turned about six pear bowls last winter. I haven't but two pear trees here are about finished being trees so sometime, Lord willing, I'll turn some pear. Hope I can keep it from cracking.
I sure like the way yours finished. Very nice indeed.
Thank you Ray. I have a feeling we will have a plum and an apple tree we will need to replace. Neither are very big but I will probably save some of it. Even it is just for the smoker.
I have had good luck with Pear not cracking. And it turns like a dream.
Take care,
Gary
Gary, I think you made it perfect. Well done.
Thank you Jack and thanks for watching.
Gary
Thanks for sharing another one of your very creative pieces. The center on one side in the video seemed a little dark in color and the live edge going upward looked like wings. Either way it turned out beautiful as always . Be well
Thank you Linda. I appreciate you watching and commenting.
Gary
Howdy Gary! Nice job Beautiful Drift boat bowl, enjoyed the video👍enjoyed seeing those nice shavings fly! Makes me wanna go do some turning!😎
Thank you very much Kimsey. For sure the sight of shavings flying makes me want to go turn as well.
Take care,
Gary
As always.............excellent job Gary!!
Thank you very much Alan. I appreciate you watching and commenting.
Gary
Thanks for sharing and I love your drift bowl👍👏👏👏👏😃
Thank you very much. I love drifting that part of the river. Just need to get out and do it more. I used to be there every weekend fishing.
Thanks for watching.
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 the pleasure was mine Gary😀 Cheers Dougie👍
Beautiful bowl, Gary. I really like this unusual shape. I was a bit concerned that you might lose some of the bark or even that taller "wing" but your turning talents were on display again, my friend. Great video, Gary. Unfortunately I will have to wait a whole week for the next one. 😒😢 Oh well, it's always worth the wait.
Happy turning,
.....Gord
Thank you very much Gord. Those wings were a bit tricky that is my favorite part of the turning. I just needed to make sure they did not get destroyed in the process. If they were both at the same height would have been easier. But why would you want them on the same height LOL.
Well next week might be boring but I still hope you enjoy it.
Take care,
Gary
Gary that turned out really well and a smashing piece well done.
Thank you very much Alan. I appreciate you watching and commenting.
Take care,
Gary
I like this work very much, thanks for sharing.
All the best.
Mauro
Thank you very much Mauro and thanks for watching.
Take care,
Gary
I love the shape. That looks great Gary.
Thanks so much Jiggys!
Take care my friend,
Gary
Great boat bowl, 👍👍👍👍
Thank you Gao!
Really like the shape, I think the offset wings look fantastic and good job keeping the bark on , another great video Gary very enjoyable.
All the best to you.
Regards Jim
Thank you Jim I appreciate your comments and I do like the non symmetrical wings. I was sure happy the bark hung in. It was lots of fun to turn and Pear really does turn nice.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
You made that look easy Gary and I know it wasn't due to the differing heights of the 2 wings.
It is gorgeous my friend.
Great video as ever Gary.
Take care my friend.
Hwyl, Huw
Thank you very much Huw. Once I got it turned below the wings it got much more relaxing. Pear is a softer wood and I do think it could break off easily.
Take care!
Hwyl,
Gary
As the old song says, I like it like that. Good job.
Thank you Garth. I remember that song and like it as well.
Take care,
Gary
I love the shape. It does look like a drift boat. Another great job!
Thank you Ron. A bit of a stubby one but that is what I saw while holding it.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Love the shape! Pear is so nice to turn!
Thank you Carol and it sure is. I have a few other pieces but no other shapes like this one has.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Gary, your patience and talent shine through, especially with the uneven “wings. Fruitwood is always a pretty wood. Beautiful bowl 👍
Thank you Skip. For sure fruit wood is some of the nicest but some of it really likes to crack. Pear has been pretty nice to me though.
Take care,
Gary
Great looking bowl Sir. Reminds me of a birds mouth bowl, I know that might be a stretch but it looks that way to be. Although I would hate to meet that bird! Have a blessed weekend!
Thanks Harry. Yes a birds mouth but I sure would hate to meet that birds momma LOL.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
That was fun. Nice job on the drift boat bowl.
Thank you very much Rick. I should have named it after my drift boat. Lavro
Very nice, Gary. I appreciate the real time video around 3:42.
Thank you Josh. It would be nice to do real time for the whole video. But pretty sure not many would watch something that long.
But it would sure make editing easy.
When I find spots like the 3:42 I like using them as real time for sure.
Take care,
Gary
Really nice Gary. Looks like a gravy boat kind of.
Thank you Chris. Yes a gravy boat for sure. I guess I had drift boat on my mind because this piece of Pear was stored under the pole shed where I keep the drift boat and I thought about that. The thing of it is there is a lot of other wood there and I do not want to turn another drift boat too soon LOL.
Take care,
Gary
I love that live edge. Great work sir.
Thank you very much Tale Gunner.
I appreciate you watching and commenting.
Gary
Really nice bowl Gary, love the shape. Keep well, John
Thank you John. Happy you like it.
Take care,
Gary
Thanks for clarifying which side the worm screw goes in and starting cuts on flat side. Always been a mystery. Very nice bowl. Always a pleasure to watch you work.
Thank you very much Robert. Happy you enjoyed the video and I appreciate you watching and commenting.
Take care,
Gary
Gary, You are amazing I learn so much from you and Phil. It pushes me to try more and different shapes of log pieces. I was telling you to make the base smaller and more of a sweeping curve it might make it look taller. I don’t know but it is a beautiful boat bowl. Be safe my friend.
Thank you very much Kevin. Well it could have made it look better but I did was worried it was looking to tall as it was. I think I even mentioned that. Most of the time I am not sure of some of the things I mention till I edit the video LOL.
Happy you like it and thanks for watching.
Gary
Very nice Gary! The grain in that bowl is so fine. It looks amazing. I do love the shape and it certainly does remind me of a drift boat. I used to shoot a fishing show “Sports Fishing BC” and at times spent many hours in a drift boat. My old pear tree in the back yard is shaking a little nervously as I contemplate that fine grained wood. 😮 Thanks for the video.
Cheers, Rick
Thank you very much Rick. Pear is an amazing wood and it turns so nice.
I have a Lavro drift boat and used to practically live in it. Lately not nearly enough. Cold weather does not work so good for me now. So the fall salmon on the Clackamas is about all I do now. The other times of year there are way too many jet sleds. But in the fall the water is so low they can not run it. Perfect for a drift boat.
We had a somewhat local show here called Fishing the West. Sports store owner Larry Scheoenborn produced it.
Take care,
Gary
Gary,
I like this piece the drift boat or gravy boat👍😎
Thank you Luie. I suppose it does look a lot more like a gravy boat.
I think the fact is was stored under my pole building and sitting right next to my drift boat for quite awhile it was stuck in my head.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 😊👍😎
BEAUTIFUL BEAUTIFUL AND BEAUTIFUL. weldone gary.
Thank you Manjit, happy you liked it.

Very nice Gary natural edge always looks good
Thank you very much. I really love the edge on this one.

Thank you Einar I appreciate you watching and commenting.
Gary
WOW that's awesome you have a good eye for what you do 👁️👍💜👍
Thank you very much Sue! I appreciate you watching and commenting.
Gary
Another nice wood turning, Gary. I never gave much thought to turning peach wood. Guess I'll have to find some. Too hot here to turn anything at this time in the shop. My mimosa root ball still on the lathe.
Thank you John. I have turned a number of pieces of Pear but this is the first I got from our neighbor when he cut this one down.
Funny we were talking about how cold it was this morning. Still only 51 and says high will be 75.
Stay cool!
Gary
Very nice Gary, never turned any pear! Stay well, it does look like a wooden drifter!
Thank you very much! At one time I thought about building a wooden drift boat but the rivers I float have a lot of rocks and I like to drift them when they are very low. So I bought one made from fiberglass. Nothing slides over the rocks better than fiberglass.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
It took me a while to get to this video, but it was worth the wait. Looks great.
Thank you Dave, happy you got to it and you liked it.
Take care,
Gary
For some reason I have the same problem with that material. So now I use some foam from an old couch that I recycled and it doesn't mark my finish. It works great because it forms to the inside of the piece and I have learned that you can also control the pressure of the tailstock. I've even used it to turn off a larger tenon just to see if I could do it. Happy turning my friend ☺️
Thank you Edward. It does not always mark the finish and I try to let it sit long enough to make sure the finish is dry. I have put a paper towel under the material. I will see if I have any of that foam around.
Thanks for the tip and for watching.
Gary
I love the shape Gary!!!! The colors in the wood grain are beautiful.
Thank you Jane happy you liked it.
Take care
Gary
Looks get, Gary. I like the base the way it is. If you made it any smaller, it might look top heavy but then I don't have the best eye for that sort of stuff.
Bill
Thank you Bill. I do like it this way myself. It just seem to fit the rest of the shape so I went with it.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Very nice piece Gary.
Thank you Mark, I appreciate you watching and commenting.

very nice bowl, Gary
Thanks Ward, happy you like it.
Take care,
Gary
A beautiful bowl! I love the colour of the wood, the shape you've given it, and I really love the live edge you've left on it! It reminds me of one of those old-fashioned fancy bathtubs!
Thank you Pauline. It was a perfect piece of Pear for sure.
I think the old fashion bathtub is winning . I think I was feeling like it was time to get our drift boat out.
Thanks for watching.
Gary
Awesome bowl, love the shape
Thank you Mike and thanks for watching.
Gary
great looking bowl it the right size i like the bark on it
Thank you Delbert. I really enjoyed turning it.
Take care,
Gary
Nicely done Gary! Ive turned ornamental peach, and it looks very similar to that pear. Really pretty shape! 😊❤👍
Thank you Dave. I have not turned any peach but I can see how it might look similar. A lot of the fruit wood seems to.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
We think the size is right, looks great, love the live edge finish , i thought in the beginning it was going to be a whiter wood. really enjoyed the vid. All the best from Lincolnshire UK
Thank you Gary. It did seem a little lighter but the finish brought out really nice color.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
That is beautiful.i love live edges!
Thanks Greer. Happy you liked it and thanks for watching,
Gary
Another beautiful piece. Again your skill and imagination show through your projects. You mentioned the number of tools you have at your disposal. It would be interesting to have you show how you store your tools while you are turning and maybe when you are not turning. I have a problem storing my tools yet have them close at hand when I need them.
Thank you Doug. Over the years I have a real collection of turning tools. Some I really do not use very much. They are the ones I had at work for turning wood patterns. They are pretty bulky but I have used one of them for very out of round pieces. I am guessing I have at least 30 turning tools. Most are stored behind me where they are easy to reach and then a few special ones at the end of my lathe. Next time I have a shorter video I will show where and how I have them stored. Plus my grinder is right behind me as well.
Thanks for asking and I will fit something in.
Gary
Thanks. You are truly great teacher that is much appreciated.
Hello Gary. The size and shape are good. As always, the finish is perfect. My preference is usually, for simitry. On these live edge projects, I feel like my mind is changing. In other words...mind blown. This vessel is awesome. Well done sir.
Keep up the great work. Thank you for sharing your talents with the world.
Thank you very much for your kind words Shaun. I spent most of my working life making sure the left side looked like the right side when it needed to be. And in a lot of cases it looks great in a wood turning. But when a piece grows like this one did I try not to change it much.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Beautiful job
Thank you very much Oliver.
Beautiful as always, Gary👍🏻I’m trying something similar today on some pear. Great minds!😁I just hope it comes out as nice as yours.
Thank you Mike. Have fun with yours and I bet it will look great.
Take care,
Gary
Looks great, leave it as is.
Thank you and that is how it is. Happy you liked it.
Gary
Wow Gary, just wow. Another amazing beautiful piece, and as always, you make it look so easy. Even uneven wings are no match for you. I really like how it turned out, and think it's about perfect the way it is. A great lesson in how to make fine art. Thank you!
Thank you Mark I appreciate your kind words. When I picked the piece up and looked at it I loved the odd shape it had and did what I could to keep it. Just happen to be how I cut the log in half that left it like this. Now to find the other half...under my shed for sure.
Take care,
Gary
Looks cool, Gary!
Thank you very much Billy and thanks for watching.

Every time I watch your project. I'm amazed at the creative design. Once again, very good!! I don't think you really needed to change it in anyway! The creative spark that you had was pretty much spot on....

Nice work Gary 👏! Have you ever heard of a papaw tree? It's got fruit on it that sort of taste like a banana. Take care and GOD BLESS 🙏!
Thank you Stephen and no I have not heard of that tree. I guess I might be interested in turning but not eating the fruit. Banana is my least favorite. God bless my friend,
Gary
Nice
Thank you very much Anna and thanks for watching and commenting.

I love the drift boat bowl. It also reminds me of a old-fashioned tub!
Thank you Crystal. Yes and old tub or gravy bowl for sure.

Pretty!
Thank you Stuart!
Beautiful bowl Gary! I really loke these kind of bowls and find myself doing theme quite often. Keep those videos coming. Between you and Phil Anderson I can spend a lot of time on utube.
