Great method for scratching a board into a bowl!! That ring clamp sure reminds me of the wine press my Grandfather used, back in the 50's!! Beautiful bowl, wonderful finish!! Would look great, on the table, filled with wine grapes!!!

If you have not seen them I have 2 videos showing how I make the ring cutting jig. I do like the second one better. Take care, Gary
Gary, this is one beautiful bowl. What a great use for a gorgeous piece of burl. When I use my press, I found that by putting a wheel bearing (any autopart store) on top of the work, it is unmoved by the twisting action of the press as I tighten it. How I wish I had a piece of scrap like that!
Thank you Josh! The end of my press not only adjust to the fit but it also is free spinning so I do not need a bearing on it. So I have not twisting issues to contend with. Thank you Leo. A serving platter was one option I thought of. I have another unknown piece of wood about this size that just may become a serving platter. Been wondering what kind of wood it is for years. I found it at a garage sale years ago and have done nothing with it yet. Thanks for watching, Gary
Fantastic project Gary. Simple, and elegant. The best kind. I really appreciate the lesson about drawing a line on your board before you cut it. That seems to really help the process, and improve the result. And once again, you have proved to all of us to SAVE EVERY PIECE! Of wood from projects, because they can come back to be beautiful. Thanks for the video, and thanks for the lesson. See you next week.
Thank you Mark. I think everyone knows this was never going near the fire pit. As a matter of fact my wife goes through the wood I bring out and says....are you sure you are not going to use this LOL. Take care, Gary
Very nice piece Gary you just can't go wrong with Burl wood. I have probably made at least 30 or more pieces out of mostly Cherry Burl and just love it. My wife and I have gotten my garage stocked up with Burls from hunting for them this past winter. So I have quite a lot of work to do this summer. Happy turning my friend ☺️
Thank you very much Edward! Where do you go burl hunting where you are able to cut them? I do have a Siberian Elm tree in the back that is full of burls. And it will stay that way. I did get a huge limb trimmed and got some nice burl from it. But nothing like the lower 15 feet of this tree. Take care, Gary
@@ThePapa1947 we live in central Pennsylvania about a hour west of State College. Here we have the application mountain chain running right through. Over the years I have found stands of Cherry trees that have an over abundance of Burls. We only take the dead standing or dead on the ground Burls. One other piece of advice for you is when you harvest them. Always leave at least a foot of the log on either end so that the burl doesn't crack as it dries. I would also like to say that I have always been a good Steward of nature and source my wood responsibly. Take care and Happy turning my friend 😊

Great Job! What an excellent way to use a flat board to make a bowl. Looking forward to your next turning.

Take care,
Gary

Thank you Tom. Happy you liked it.

Take care,
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 we live in central Pennsylvania about a hour west of State College. Here we have the application mountain chain running right through. Over the years I have found stands of Cherry trees that have an over abundance of Burls. We only take the dead standing or dead on the ground Burls. One other piece of advice for you is when you harvest them. Always leave at least a foot of the log on either end so that the burl doesn't crack as it dries. I would also like to say that I have always been a good Steward of nature and source my wood responsibly. Take care and Happy turning my friend 😊
Sounds perfect to find them on trees that end up on the ground. I am sure we have lots around here. Lots of trees and forest in Oregon.
@@ThePapa1947 I'm hoping to get to see that side of the country. My childhood dream was to see the Redwoods and Sequoias. Just the thought of something so much bigger than the 250 yo White oak I have on my property. I'm working on trying to save it from gypsy moths from eating it's foliage at this present time of year. Have a wonderful weekend and thank you for being such a great teacher. The world needs more people like you.
@@edwardhand7070 been to the Redwoods a few times. There is a tree there that you can drive your car through.
Also consider the Olympic National Park. And amazing place. Last time we were there we saw a Red Cedar tree that was nearly 20 foot in diameter.
That is a beautiful bowl. I have to get me one of those board cutters that you have.
Thank you John, it is a great way to use up a piece of wood like this.
Thanks for watching,
Gary

Gary
Gary this is an Amazing bowl and working this way a person with little money could produce a bowl quit cheaply but still use what would be an expensive wood if using a solid blank
Thank you Douglas. I think it was the best use of the burl I had save for so long.
Take care,
Gary
