A Tangent Stave Wood Turning + Adjustable Stave Sled
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 1 дек 2024
- I make another tangent glue up and make a small platter out of it.
Made from Walnut, Yellow Birch and Padauk.
I also made and adjustable sled for cutting tapered staves.
I show all the steps I used in making the turning and I show how the sled works as well.
I also hot glued tenons on the piece to hold it while doing the turning and then used denatured alcohol the help remove the hot glue.
I used Titebond III to glue it together. Some might use epoxy resin but the glue holds fine.
Gord Rocks channel: / gordonrock1
Finished with Spray Lacquer and Acks Abrasive Paste and Polish
I used bowl gouges and negative rake scrapers in the turning.

Thank you Allen, it was a lot of fun to do.

I think it's time for a channel name change, professor. "The Genius Woodturner" or "Einstein Does Woodturning." My gosh, you are just far and away above any other segment turner I have seen. And it's not just the math, it's your ability to see what the piece will look like before you begin so you know how to do the math! Amazing! Really well done, very interesting and fun to watch video, Gary! 😊 Oh, yeah, and the final piece is beautiful, too!
Phil
Gosh Phil I am not sure how I could use the channel names. My head would swell up so much my face shield would not fit! As it is I will need to wait an hour to go start a turning lol.
I do appreciate your kind words though.
One of my favorite things at work was the planning of how I would build the pattern and there was a lot of math involved in most of it.
This was a lot of fun to work out do each step to get to the end.
Next week will be your style and hope you like it.
Happy you enjoyed it and I appreciate your very kind comments.
Take care buddy!

Good evening, Gary. Gotta love your jigs. Great video and your platter looks fantastic. Thumbs up.
Thanks so much Ray, I do like making fixtures and jigs and then being able to use them for things like this. I should be able to cut compound staves on it as well At least that is the plan.

Beautiful platter. Another well done project. I too save extra segmented rings for a future project. 👍
Thank you Greg. I have lots of saved pieces. When I make something like the stars I have made I will do two just because there is so much setup so I figure make it worth it get 2. I also have the tumbling block feature ring I made 2 of. I just need to work them into a turning where they will lot end up looking the same.

Thank you very much Barry. I appreciate you watching and commenting.
Gary
Great video and I especially like the mathematics explanation as I am a retired math teacher.
Thank you very much. Math was one of my favorite subjects in school. I went on to use this type of math as a wood pattern maker and it is just how I think now. Many years ago when I got my first calculator with all the bells and whistles I fell in love with the tangent button. We had customers who insisted that we lay the angles out that way instead of a Starrett protractor. And that all made sense.
Thanks for watching,
Gary

First, I want to thank you for your very informative videos, I love the details and your explanations. Beautiful finished products. Second, Your honesty in the every day work a day world is refreshing. Life gets in the way. You have to go somewhere , it's late, dinners on the table. Like you about the time I'm in a therapeutic project zone. The neighbor needs her car jumped, the dogs want to be fed, O'le what's her name want to go shopping, there's always a calling. And maybe just as well. It causes me to slow down and consider various applications to the project I'm working on. Keep up the videos, You give me a great deal of inspiration and allow my mind to to grow in expediential ways. BUZZ THE WOODBUTCHER
Thank you very much for your comments Buzz. They are much appreciated.
Even being retired for almost 11 years I still seem to not have enough time to get things done.
We are involved with a lot of things and tomorrow morning will be doing one of those things we do.
I have two pieces I am working on right now and want to get them done but they can wait.
Thanks for watching,

Hi, Gary. Another outstanding piece. I watched this sometime in the past. I know that because it has my thumbs up. But, and this is unforgiveable, I didn't leave a comment. Shame!!! I hope you don't get tired of us folks heaping praise on your work. As long as you keep posting you will keep getting the same, and well deserved, responses. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂 PS, I totally agree with your comments about Gord Rock. He is another of the greats.👍👍
Thanks so much Glen. Happy you came back and watched it again and appreciate your comments.
Gord is going through a lot so please keep him in your thoughts.

Amen about Gord. But you are having problems too. I am wishing the best to both of you.
An other brilliant work of art, designed in the mind, formed on the bench, turned on the lathe!! As always, spectacular results!! Fortunately, art doesn't need functionality! Beautiful finished piece!! Could easily be a serving plater, as well as just mounting it on a wall!!
Thank you Joe, I may let her use it for a serving patter for special occasions. As long as I get to approve what it is serving and I like it LOL.

So many take aways, two top; using the plate as a jam chuck to size the plug and the construction/use of the sled. Many thanks, Cheers Gord
Thank you Gord. I appreciate your comments on using the turning for a jam chuck. Much easier than removing the piece to do just the same thing. When making a tenon to hot glue onto a piece I often use the face of the chuck jaws the same way.
Happy you liked the new sled as well.

Hi: Gary
I am a huge fan of yours and really enjoy reading what you share, I have been inspired by many of your works and it has helped me a lot, I also really enjoy turning. To show my gratitude to you, I would like to sponsor you a set of carbide turning tools that we produce ourselves, I made many improvements to retractable and no sharpening because I am a turning tool maker. I hope you can keep on bringing us more and better works and help more friends who love turning, I will always support you.
I look forward to hearing from you .
Thank you very much I appreciate your comments. I think I have seen your tools used in a giveaway and that is what I would probably do. You are welcome to contact me. My email can be found in my About Page.

Beautiful platter/bowl. I loved Geometry class in school. It has helped me with my quilting intricate quilts. So glad to have your reasoning and plans.
Thank you Judith! I love geometry and trig as well. I was never very good at algebra. But I had a teacher that just did not like to teach or I think I would have loved it as well.
Thanks for watching.
Gary
Yes I passed gebra with a d-. I understood equations but couldn't make them work until I took geometry. I think my algebra teacher couldn't or wouldn't explain things. He would talk give us our homework or tests and that was it. If you had a question he would say it's in the book figure it out.
Sounds like we had the same teacher!
Another fine jig for segmented turning. I'll make one. My church has a fund raiser in June and I'm making bowls them them to sell. One or two of these plates would be nice too. I have one of those digital angle levels; it's very useful when you need precise angles.
Thank you Paul. Sounds like a great reason to turn something like this. It should help raise some money for your church.
I have been thinking about getting one of the digital protractors as well. But this works great for most everything. I even set angles on my band saw table . I just zero it to the blade.
Thanks for watching.
Gary

I know I said that I wouldn't try segmented bowls until I ran out of burls, but with that sled for cutting precise angles, you make it look easy. You may have me hooked on this one. 🙂 Thanks, Gary!

But on the other hand if I had all those burls I am not sure what I would turn.

Beautiful Platter Gary, Love the woods ya chose the colors look great together and nice job on that Saw Sled to, and I like how ya fix it so the off fall pieces slide away from the blade, Enjoyed the video!👍
Thank you Kimsey. The Yellow Birch was a nice surprise the way the light reflected off of it. Those little pieces can build up around the blade and it is nice to have them fall away from it.

@@ThePapa1947 Gary, have you recorded a video of you making the kind of segmented padauk ring you used in this video? If not, that would be a great video for newer segmented turners like me. Thanks!

A long you piece of wood are and wide are they you do beautiful work hi learned from you A lot thanks you for sharing
Denis I cut the pieces from a 1.375 inch thick board and they were 5" long. The wide end was .875 inches wide and tapered to .00 inches. What is important is you cut them 10 degrees. The length will work itself out.
Hope that helps.

Well, it looks like I need to make another jig! Thanks Gary! A friend of mine gave me a small table saw a few weeks ago. I've yet to try it out, so I'm not sure how accurate it will cut. Guess I'll just have to try!
Thank you Heather. It all depends on how it is made and what it is made of. A small table saw could work just fine if it is well built. Mine is a a pretty heavy duty one but for years I had a Sears table saw that was much lighter.
I never had any problems with it making accurate cuts. It was a late 1940's or very early 1950's.
Hope it works out for you.

Nice piece Gary, as usual. Wouldn't it be wonderful to have a little help while racing against the clock on those complex glue-ups? I can't count the number to times I thought to myself why are you doing this alone. Can make you crazy, in a good way though, especially when the results speak for themselves! Great execution with the sled also!
Thank you very much Steve. I suppose help while gluing might be good. Something like this I would be more comfortable doing it myself. Sometimes I start to feel rushed if I have help. Makes no sense but it does. I will think twice when I do the 72 stave piece LOL.
That will mean I need to build a glue fixture to make it quicker.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Awesome Gary! I love watching when you cut segments of wood, glue them together and turn it into something amazing and beautiful! How long have you been turning? Was your profession, before turning, an engineer? You are so smart. It’s so fascinating to me to see and watch you use the devices you make, to aid in your woodworking projects! WOW! Take care, have an imaginative and happy week, and May the Force Be With You. See you next video! ✨🔸Roma 🌲💚🌳 🦅
Thank you very much Roma! Happy you enjoy my videos.
My very first turning was in 1961 in a grade school shop class. I knew I loved wood working back then and went on to become a wood pattern maker. From 2D drawings I made 3D patterns out of wood that were used in foundries to cast metal parts for all kinds of things. I needed to be able to read the drawings and produce the patterns so that they could be molded in the sand. I would call it the "wood workers dream job" Not only wood working but the patterns needed to be designed to create what was needed.
So that is my background which involved a lot of math and engineering to produce what was needed,
