Wood Turning Super Duper Twisted Staves NEW
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 17 фев 2022
- This is the second tangent stave turning I have done. Because the pieces were long and narrow it was a bit tricky making sure I had stock to turn a shape . I like the shape I ended up with.
Made from Padauk, Maple and Sapele.
Here is the first Tangent Stave turning I did:
• COOL! Twisted Tangent...
I finished it with Deft Spay Lacquer and Acks Sanding Paste and Polish
Tools used: Sorby Bowl Gouges, Carbide Hollowing Tool and a Negative Rake Scraper

Wow, professor, another great glue-up and turning! You certainly have tight joints down pat! Your thought processes make me a little dizzy, though, much like some of your pieces do. You also have a patent on perfect finishes! Really a great job, my friend!
I was also in the shop on Super Bowl Sunday! Hey, what's with the short sleeves? You guys having summer down there, already? Take good care, buddy and keep'em coming!
Phil
Well thank you Phil! It's really crazy how easy it is to get good joints doing this. They sort of just fit by themselves when tilted. But these fit good straight up and down so I felt good about it. As I recall it was a little cold that day but I really hate wearing long sleeves. I may own 1 long sleeve shirt that probably does not fit anymore LOL. I will break down and wear a sweat shirt when it is really cold but there will be a short sleeve on under it.
Looking the weather today it looks like short sleeves from here on out. But it is supposed to get in the 20's this week.
Be well my friend,
Gary

Gary, wow another great glue up, a bit messy but really turned out fantastic, great impresivr video.

Thank you Alan. Yes it does look messy but cleans up easy. When doing this I want plenty of glue and to have the pieces move into place easily.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Very nice!
'Thank you Steve I appreciate you watching,
Gary

Have not heard that for years but always loved it.
Take care,
Gary
Beautiful.
Thank you Robert and thanks for watching,
Gary
Great piece! It takes a certain mind to picture something like this and imagine the process to make it. and that's you. This is a Papa 1947 piece, for sure. As always, the narration is appreciated, too.
Thank you Josh for your very kind words. I think they may be more to this idea in the works. Not sure yet but if I do one I want it to be different.
Take care,
Gary
Always love watching your new ideas, Gary. Never get tired of watching these two or three times. But every time I watch I have to go and buy a new tool!:). Now I need that hollowing tool!
Thank you Van! I decided every time I thought I needed a new tool I would first see if I could make one. All my carbide tools were made from steel stock I had on hand and the handles were from some Ash I had. To darn expensive for the big ones for a cheap guy like me. That and I enjoy making things if I can.
take care,
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 I agree that commercial carbide tools are unreasonably expensive and I have made all of my own just using cheap pry bar sets from my local Princess Auto store and carbides from Amazon and other sources. I usually turn a nice hardwood handle to make them more professional looking and can usually make one for less than $30 CND.
Mama Mia! That vase is absolutely gorgeous! Fantastic work on your part by matching the different color woods. It came out so beautifully! Great job! Bravo!
Thanks so much Cathy and thanks for watching,
Gary
That is freaking amazing!
Thank you very much!
WOW! I am impressed. I'm also just a learner...and yes, I soooo want to try this. Of course, it will take many, many times toget it right.
Thank you Michael, very happy you liked it. Just plan ahead and do it step by step. This is only the second one I have done. The first worked perfect as well. This one is the same idea but the making it was lots different.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Gary, I have decided you are a Wood Artis and a Mathematician all in one person. Enjoy watching how you angle cut the wood The tight joint are amazing! Keep your videos' coming Mr. Woodartmatician lol
Well thank you very much John. It really is the only math I am pretty good with. But I used it daily at work.
Thank you for the new title. Phil started calling me Professor. Sheesh what next LOL
Take care,
Gary
That looks awesome. Incredible project
Thank you! Cheers!
Thanks for watching,
Gary
That looks terrific. Well done. Quite a messy glueup. Glad this went according to plan.
Nice bandsaw jig. If you did find the wood slipping, consider embedding a piece of the serrated strip metal on e.g., aluminium foil roll. Easy to cut due to being thin and the teeth should add sufficient grip without damaging the wood.
Dave.
Thank you Dave! Good thing glue cleans up easily. I have been getting that glue on my hands for well over 50 years. I used to like to peal if off when I was a kid.
If you are talking about slipping while cutting it was locked in but I see how that could help having it on the ends. The other thing I do is glue some sandpaper to those spots on the fixture. Those ends get cut anyway.
Thanks for watching and your ideas,
Gary
That’s definitely at a high level of craftsmanship. What a gem!
Thank you very much Sylvie I appreciate your comments.
Thanks for watching.
Gary
I am always impressed with your work. This is my favorite so far as it is absolutely stunning. Thank you for being one of the few that share the process and comment on what you are doing. It is a blessing to be able to hear these things as a beginner.
Thank you Adam I appreciate your comments. Talking my way through some of these projects also helps me to improve on the process and happy you find it helpful as well.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Very nice.
Thank you very much and thanks for watching.
