Magnificent bowl. I really love walnut. Your design is awesome. I just realized that I forgot to send a photo of the bud vase project I told you about. But, that is okay because the design and production was a bust. Haha..I plan some design and technique changes when I am doing less hiking, photography and house maintenance. Looks like I need more hours in the day. Haha. Thanks for sharing your videos. I really look forward to them. My wife likes them too. Take care.
Thank you very much Travis. I am sure you will make a better bud vase. Happy hiking and photography. Happy to hear you wife likes my videos as well. Gary
The wood (grain and inclusions) should determine the shape, and you hit it another home run with this shape and finish. Thanks for another great project.
Absolutely beautiful piece of wood Gary; the figure and the grain are stunning and a marvel of Creation. The bowl really turned out nicely; really like the shape and the finish.
Thank you Mark. I really had no idea what it was going to look at till I started turning. The defects had a big role in the shape. Thanks for watching, Gary
Nice chunk of walnut Gary. And a really nice bowl from it. My new lathe is going well, getting used to all the nice things it can do, just turned a natural edge piece of olive that was a off a gnarly old tree. Giving it to the tree owner as a gift for the wood. Keep smilin'.
Thank you Colin. I bet you are loving your new lathe. It is great being able to give the tree owner something from their tree. Thanks for watching, Gary
Thanks Susanne. I cut up some black walnut I got a few years ago. First view of the grain. Just amazing looking. I want to get the others cut in half. Ran out of energy so maybe tomorrow. Thanks for watching, Gary
The “Walnut Wave” !! I love it Gary. I’m partial to walnut,, but this is a really nice piece. A good save what with the cracks and all. Also a lovely soft design and a great finish! Cheers, Rick
Thank you Rick. It was just driving me crazy to look at the piece and try to get something out of the whole piece. I finally saw that for me it just was not to be. Happy I cut it up a bit. Thanks for watching, Gary
Really beautiful bowl, Gary! I appreciate your narration letting us know your thoughts as the piece develops! Always enjoy your videos. Thanks for posting.
Wonderful piece Gary! That is a beautiful shape, and lovely wood. I loved seeing you work out the issues with the wood from the beginning, one at a time. My favorite is the use of sanding sealer and sandpaper to seal cracks. That is an excellent tip, and I will for sure use it. Thank you again for a great lesson, and a beautiful turning. See you next time.
À nice looking piece of wood to be starting with Gary. You did a good job dealing with the cracks. A nice wee tip on the slurry method, that's going in my note book ! As always you end up with a really good looking end result. Take it easy mate & keep getting fitter. Keep well & stay safe 👍🏴

Beautiful!I love the way you did the lip of the bowl.My cousin's hubby just did his first bowl a couple weeks ago,I told them to watch your vlog for more ideas.
Nice piece Gary. Thanks for the crack fixing tip as well. Using CA for small cracks has its drawbacks sometimes but your method does a better job of disguising them.
Thank you for sharing. That piece has a wonderful figure. It is beautiful the way it appears to swirl a bit. Almost a wave pattern. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂
Absolutely gorgeous Gary ! The contrast between the sap and heart wood is awesome . The finish is superb and there is even a hint of chatoyance . While it rotates it's almost like an eclipse . Funny part is , I have a bowl almost identical except I made mine out of Cherry wood . Great job and thanks for sharing . Hope you have a great weekend .......in the rain . Whaa !
Many thanks Jon! It had what I was hoping for on the inside. Rain??? Sun is out and looking good. Oh wait it is Oregon...probably rain in an hour LOL Gary
Hi Gary... Beautiful piece of Walnut ... I really liked the shape that you went with. Great turning and finish... Take care my friend...All the best.....Andy
Wow! What a beautiful piece of English Walnut!!!!! I love the shape, too. It would have looked good with the natural edge, too. It was an interesting shape. But what you did was perfect, too. Have a great weekend, Gary.
That looks good, Gary. I like the shape. It gave you the opportunity to keep more of the wood than making a platter would have. The poly finish was the right choice. See you on the next video.
Just gotta love it when the wood works out in your favor. Maybe with some issues. I'm having some issues with cracks in a very beautiful Black Walnut crotch right now and I don't want to turn it into a platter. Happy turning my friend ☺️.

I got some that was part of a huge Walnut orchard and the trees were all smaller and the wood was not as nice as this for the most part. Thanks for watching, Gary
Another beautiful piece Gary! I really like your tip about using sanding sealer and sandpaper to create a slurry to fill in defects. I will try that on my next piece. Thanks again for sharing and showing off your wonderful work! Keep it up!
Hi Gary, the bowl look great! Like the grain and shape. The undercut of the inside rim is very distinctive. I also like the wipe-on-poly. Super easy finish that I’ve never had an issue with.
Thanks for the description of your finish process. I've used wipe-on a couple of times but wasn't happy with the result. I'll try three coats with Ack's on top.
Nice bowl! I tried Wipe On Poly and had terrible results. I don't know what I did wrong. You make it look ridiculously easy. But I fought with it and fought with it - sanding back and trying again, then sanding it back again. It just wouldn't dry flat. There were always ridges from my fingers. And I tried to only wipe a second or third time, at most. Finally, I bought a small spray gun, thinned the Poly and sprayed it. Still not amazing, but it sort of worked. I'm not gonna try it again anytime soon. I'm sticking with 8-15 coats of Deft lacquer. 3-4 min. per coat.
Thanks Dave. Only thing I can think of is your putting it on too heavy. I wipe almost all off leaving a film. After 3 or 4 coats it should look nice Fifteen coats of lacquer? Spray gun or rattle can. Which brand of lacquer and gun if you are using one?
Cool idea on the shellac. I have badly stained some projects with CA glue. What is your preferred speed. I favor 1100. I made a hunny pot looking bowl and it was one of my favorites.. thank you Gary I really enjoyed this.
Thank you Rick. The CA only comes out where there is a crack that might cause issues. I have spent for ever trying to remove a CA stain and never seem to get rid of of. It seems I do not get much more than 1100 on a bowl with any size. I am sure like you it is more of how it is cutting as far as speed goes. Thanks for watching, Gary
Beautiful bowl! Good idea with the dust sanding into the shellac to fill in the cracks, thanks for the information. I will be using that now. Does that bottle with the shellac in it stay air tight with the cap on? I don’t want the shellac to evaporate away.
Thank you Joe. The sanding trick works great. I use it mostly for surface cracks. The bottle seals just fine. It is actually a glue bottle I bought at Rockler. Thanks for watching, Gary
Walnut is certainly a nice timber, that piece as quite dark as well. Is the wipe on poly always a Matt satin finish like that. Quite a few design opportunities with this bowl Gary. Liked the rollover top but not sure about the large base. Thanks
Thank you Greg. You never know how a piece will take finish. I used gloss poly on this one and like how it looks. Not as glossy as somethings I make though. It would have looked good with a smaller base. I tend to watch the grain and try not to turn away so end up with a larger base at times. Thanks for watching, Gary
Great results, Gary! Glad you were able to save so much beauty. That shellac and sanding trick is new to me and brilliant. I would probably stay with CA if it's a structural crack. What are your thoughts?
Thank you Jay. If it is a structural crack I will use CA. I will try and do that before taking my final passes so I can clean up the stains. Thanks for watching, Gary
Thank you Barry. I seldom use sanding sealer with the wipe on oil based poly. It is thin and goes into the wood like a sealer wood. With the water based poly I do use the sealer because the Polyacrylic is much thicker. Thanks for watching, Gary
