Excellent job as always Gary. I love the wood grain, and the finish makes it pop. That shape and design can be used for most anything. Thanks for the video. Always a pleasure, my friend.
I've heard of Red Alder but have never turned it. I do have a piece of Alder from Rick but it's not red, at least I don't think so. You did a great job with this very deep bowl! Beautiful red color, great design and finish and holds lots of popcorn! What could be better? Very nicely done, my friend, keep'em coming! 😊 Phil
Thanks Phil This was not all that red looking before the finish. I bet the piece you got from Rick is Red Alder. Someone around here asked why would you need that much Popcorn. I said it is not a matter of NEED LOL Take care my friend, Gary
Awesome bowl really looks nice with the fruit. As soon as you spun it around I saw George Washington. Now I see Tweety Grandma / woman with a shaw on from the cartoons. Keep up the awesome work Gary. 👽
Great looking bowl Gary you and Phil are the only turner's I watch and I have been turning about 1.5 years now and you 2 make it look so easy it's just amazing what you do so thanks for sharing the videos
Thank you very much Bobby for your comments. How often to you turn? It will get easier the longer you do turn. Wishing you all the best in this journey called wood turning. Always something new. Gary
@ThePapa1947 thanks for the vote of confidence I turn every day my skills have gotten better but not even close to you and Phil but I'm trying not giving up lol
@ThePapa1947 no wonder why you are the man I'm 55 so I don't think I will get that much experience but for now I just love turning and watching you & Phil when I'm not turning lol
Very nice -- that alder really finished well. I like the shape you gave it on the outside. I see no issues with you speeding through some elements of the turning. Leaving those bark features in adds quite a bit of interest because of the shapes one can see in them.
Thank you Mark. I think we all speed things up but this one took so long I felt I really pushed it along. Fine line between seeing it all and getting bored LOL. At least it is for me. I was temped to stop cutting when George Washington showed up. But did not like the shape. Thanks for watching, Gary
Thank you Gary. I think we will use it for fruit more than popcorn. My wife has been picking berrys from our place all week. The pears are coming on and the peaches are showing up. Dang birds get all the cherries. Thanks for watching, Gary
Nice bowl, Gary. I vote for the popcorn. Fruit is way too healthy and even I would OD on that much M&M's. Where you saw ET, I saw the Roman god Janus. Bill
Thank you Bill. We have been eating lots of fresh berries from our yard. Might be time for some popcorn. Pretty cool how we can all see something different. Really can change with the angle you see it at. Thanks for watching, Gary

@@ThePapa1947 i've seen those bulk cutting tools that cut the Center out of big pieces to make another bowl with later instead of turning it all away. I've never turned that before but I had a piece of Walnut yesterday which I thought was going to be a bit underwhelming. I have just scored a big pile of fairly large chucks of red alder. I was stunned to see the red veining popping as I applied finish. Thank You Gary, Thank You Rick Chapman...This turning today turned out very nice. You did not have to deal with any cracks and were able to create a wonderful turning. I like that you left a small bit (a remembrance?) of the bark on the side. Until next time Gary..TM
Hum.....I have never turned alder wood. It looks like it turns very nicely. I do know there is a lot of DIY unfinished furniture made from this type of wood. So, it must be a decent wood for turning and wood working. Tell the boss lady to make more room on the shelf for a good popcorn bowl . It's definitely a very nice one!!!!
This is a lot different than the Pacific Coast Alder we have in Oregon. And we have tons of it. Matter of fact it was common to smoke salmo using alder. Because we have so much access to salmon and alder it became popular years before we were born. I have turned both and it is pretty decent to turn. Gary
Yes, very nice. Actually, I think the one reminds me of some medieval armor helmets I've seen. I don't remember you wearing a wrist brace before. Is your wrist okay?
Thank you John. Yes it does look a lot like those old helmets. The wrist is from an old army injury. Over the years it keeps getting worse. Hopefully it gets better. The wrist brace helps a lot. Thanks for asking, Gary
Thank you Stuart. I have thought about getting one but have never had one. Even turning a 6 foot diameter almost bowl shapped pattern I used a straight rest. A very old injury is acting up. The wrist support helps a lot. Thanks for watching, Gary
Very nice Gary! On the one side before you said it, I saw Sherlock Holmes! I do have a question for you. Do you experience any tear out with your negative rake scraper? I currently don't have a negative rake scraper but have been looking to get one. It seems like you use yours on most every turning so I think I already know your answer! Thanks again for sharing and such a beautiful piece it is!
Thank you Michael. I think it is cool how we can see images in our turnings. And some see it different. I will have to watch again and see if I see Sherlock in there. "Nice observation Watson" LOL So the negative rake scrapers does a great job. Now and then there might be a wood that is just going to tear out no matter what. Coming up in a few weeks you will see a very hard wood where that scraper makes the finest shavings you can imagine. I think I commented on that. Thanks for watching, Gary
Hello, why do you only shave bowls? Why don't you carve something new? Recycled ordinary bowls. Make something new. Like carve a pendant. Or a candlestick. Or a cup. Carve recycled ordinary bowls.
As a retired wood patternmaker I made more non ordinary things that your mind could imagine. If you want to spend some time looking at all the turnings I have done you will find many non ordinary things I have done. Have a look at them and see what you think. Try looking at some of my multi axis turnings. Check this one out and let me know what you think. ruclips.net/video/bJjKi7E82bw/видео.html

Thank you William. Yes there are many to choose from.

Is that the real wood colour or is it the light effect? Beautiful.
Thanks Khan. I think it is pretty close. But the LED lights could affect it.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
I see Popay's girlfriend Oliva! Nice turning!
Thank you very much. Wow that brings back old days. Uae to watch all of the Popeye cartoons.

Gary
The tangerines or clementines looked a little suspect, other than that very nicely executed
They were not in good shape but needed something to fill the bowl. I prefer oranges.
Thanks for watching,,
Gary
very nice
Thank you Delbert!
Take care,
Thanks for asking,
Gary
Still watching but I’m sure it will be great! Ever considered getting a curved tool rest? Thoughts about them? Also, is your wrist ok?
Cheers, Stuart
Thank you Stuart. I have thought about getting one but have never had one. Even turning a 6 foot diameter almost bowl shapped pattern I used a straight rest.
A very old injury is acting up. The wrist support helps a lot.

Gary
Hi Gary. I’m bummed I didn’t bump into you at the AAW in Portland.
Sorry about that. There were a few others there I did not know were there. Guess I should have mentioned I was going.
Hello Gary, that,s cool what you made. I saw that you have a hand cover . Is that for protection?
Thanks Jan. My hand was giving me some issues from a very old injury. Does it now and then. Not bad now.
Thanks for asking,
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 Ooh , that it is, I thought it was for protection …. Hope you don,t have too many problems .. greatings Jan
"Nice observation Watson" LOL
So the negative rake scrapers does a great job. Now and then there might be a wood that is just going to tear out no matter what.
Coming up in a few weeks you will see a very hard wood where that scraper makes the finest shavings you can imagine. I think I commented on that.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Turn out nice! Hey sizes is that scraper you use?
Michael
Thanks Michael. The scraper is 1.5 inchs wide and 3/8 thick.

Gary
Looks like Beetle Bailey
Yes it sure does Mike. Thanks for watching,
Gary
Look like Sherlock Holm without his pipe 😂
Yeah it sure did for awhile ☺☺
Martha Washington
Maybe Martha but I missed it. Thanks for watching.
I'd say a core cyber, then you could make another bowl.
I do not have a coring tool. I suppose if I was selling bowls I would get one so I could do just what you suggest.
1st😂
Good morning Mr. Reliable! 🤣
@@ThePapa1947😂😂 Thank you
For sure.

@@jeffwalters3735 well he changed with every pass by the gouge. I am sure Lucy was there.
