Lovely job, Gary. As always, thank you for taking the time to share 🌞
Thank you Ray and thanks for watching and commenting,
Gary
Impressive gouge work! Watching the wood spaghetti strings pile up while the bowl was shining… amazing. Thanks papa
Thanks so much Barry. That was so fun to do and really fun to watch. While I am cutting my mind is on other things but for sure I could see the shavings building up.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Lovely Gary that yellow birch sure has a pretty grain and colour Blessings
Thank you Wade. Yes it sure is a special piece of wood.
Take care,
Gary
Birch really is grossly underappreciated wood. It machines very well and displays beautiful grain with the simplest finishes. A beautiful addition to your collection.
Thank you Dave. A few years ago I made a rather large information desk for our church out of Yellow Birch. It machined nicely. Of course it was kiln dried but I loved the grain. They did want me to lightly stain it but the grain still stands out.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Lovely job, Gary. Beautiful wood Thank you for sharing.
Thanks Dave!
Cheers,
Gary
Simple but very beautiful looking bowl. Very well done Gary 👍. I have never turned birch before, but I do have access to a tree that was taken down. Thanks for sharing and take care.
Thank you very much Scott. I would say get some of it and give it a try.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Wow! That bowl is oh so beautiful.
Thank you James. I appreciate you watching.
Gary
That's a lovely bowl, Gary
Thanks Josh. It was sure fun to turn.
Gary
Garry I must admit I really like Birch to turn, it also takes a nice finish, Phil will be proud of you buddy taking of the tenon like that, well done. I also loved the face on your table at 1500
Thanks Alan. Birch is a nice wood.
That is a carving I did in a branch.
Lots of fun. Did a lot of them a few years ago.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Lovely Gary. The transition on the outside really makes it. Hope your keeping well & looking after yourself. 👍🏴
Thank you Jim. Doing pretty good and this warm weather sure helps. I look forward to laying out in the lawn chair when it gets nice and warm. Feels good on the old bones LOL
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Beautiful bowl, love the color and it has lots of figure! Birch is one of my favorite wood to work with as I like the color and figure always present along with it's workability which is easy, well done and thanks!
Cheers Al
Thank you Al. I use to think it would be a very hard wood but it turned so nice.
I will be turning more of it as I have 2 more pieces as I recall.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Thank you for the video. I l9ved everything about it. I especially like to turn birch wood myself. Seems understated and quietly elegant. Cheers Gary!
Thank you Aniita. For sure there is something very special about this piece to me.
Take care,
Gary

Really like the shape and the grain. That looks like a beautiful wood. Lots of figure in that piece. The shape you chose is simple and elegant, works very nicely with the wood.
Thank you Mark. I sure enjoyed turning this piece. Happy you liked it.
Gary
Beautiful wood and the bowl shape is too. Keep them coming. It is summer here and I will be working outside early and watching woodworking and turning videos in the afternoon. Haha. I have turned into an old man. Thanks for the fun. Have a good summer.
Thanks Travis. I plan on testing out the lawn chairs when the sun hits the backyard. Someone has to do might as well be me😃
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Beautiful Bowl Gary Enjoyed the video!👍

Gary
What a gorgeous little bowl Gary.
It's always nice to turn something without any issues.
Take care my friend.
Hwyl, Huw
Thank you Huw. For sure this was nothing but fun to turn. Can't say the same for what is in the lathe right now. Although it was fun in it's own way LOL
Hwyl,
Gary
I'm glad you moved the transition up, Gary. It looked odd. Great looking bowl, my friend. Really pretty.
Thanks Billy. for sure it looks better moved up. Sometimes you just about have to be done to see little things.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Light and strong. Nice demo Papa. Best regards. 🙃
Thanks John!
Gary, I really like your videos! This birch bowl looks beautiful! The color, when you added the sanding sealer was outstanding. One other viewer said birch is under appreciated was spot on. Great job👍
Thank Skip I would say is right about it being underrated.
Been used for firewood a lot around here. Although I never used any. Always seem to get into Alder back when we used to do that.
Thanks for watching my friend,
Gary
That really did look like very nice turning wood. Stuff like this is always nice to have on the lathe and puts a lot of fun in turning. Nice bowl Gary. I have re-finished a number of rifle stocks that were made from birch that had a cheap finish. A nice finish brings out the beauty that birch can have.
Thank you David. For sure Birch is a pretty wood. I made an information desk out of Yellow Birch. The grain was very nice.
I bet it makes nice rifle stocks.
Take care,
Gary
Wow ! I haven't seen a Yellow Birch since I left Minnesota many years ago . Gary , you did a fabulous job on this bowl . You can see how awesome the finish is .Another fine job ! We hope you have a great weekend .
Thank you very much Jon. Looks like a nice weekend coming up.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 I sure hope you are feeling ok .
Love the shape - beautiful! 😊
Thanks so much Maria. I appreciate you watching and commenting.
Gary
Beautiful birch bowl, Gary. I think I like the rich coloring better than that of cherry. 😊😊
Thank you Rob. For sure the colors were nice in this piece. But some types of Cherry are off the scale for colors.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
That's a smooth finish Garry, I like that
'Thank you Hans and thanks for watching and commenting.
Gary
Bravo nice wood playa
Thanks and thanks for watching.
Gary
Very pretty bowl
Thank you Marty I appreciaate you watching and commenting.
Gary
What a nice turning piece of wood, Gary! I really enjoyed seeing the curls come off and build up on your arm. Also really liked your tool control, nice long passes with the gouge! That slight transition on the sides makes all the difference in the look of this piece. Combined with your great finish and this is another excellent turning! So well done, my friend, keep'em coming! 😀
Phil
Thank you Phil. It sure was a fun piece of wood to turn. I was thrilled with how well it cut. It was like I touched the gouged to the wood and the wood said...I got this! I have a few more pieces but Dave said he was surprised this one was not full of grub holes....makes me wonder about the others. I will find out LOL
Thanks for your kind words my friend,
Gary
Beautiful job! Nice work.
Thank you Donald I appreciate you watching.
Gary
Good turning pierre
Thank you Pierre!
Gary

Thanks so much Will,
Cheers,
Gary
That is so gorgeous! I just acquired several pieces of Birch at our woodturning club this week.
Thank you Carol. I have more of the Birch Dave brought by. All about the same size as I recall.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Thanks for sharing Gary

Beautiful work!!
Thank you very much Mark and thanks for watching,
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 What type of lathe are you using?? I lust after a new lathe but it's not in the budget. Do you sell your work?
Its so good to see you back again in full heath, Oh and by the way thats a great looking bowl.
Thanks so much Ron. It is great being able to get out to the shop when I want.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
That is so nice! Just perfect
Thanks Chris I appreciate you watching and commenting.
Gary
Thank You Gary, Thank You Dave, Calmwood Creations... Looked like perfect turning wood. No cracks with an impressive finish. Simple, practical design and very well executed. Until next time..TM
YW!
Hi Dave!
Thank you TM. It sure was a perfect piece of wood. A very pleasant surpise.
Take care,
Gary
Birch...must try birch!
Thank you Michael. If you get a piece like this one it will be a dream to turn for sure.
Best of luck,
Gary
Beautiful piece, Gary. I never turned birch but maybe I'll try to find some and give it a go.
Thanks Tom. This was a real treat to turn.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Beautiful
Thank you very much Jack!
Take care,
Gary
Purdy! Gotta love the subdued grain. Bet it would look great segmented with walnut, maybe something between the two for another color and variety. Great work.
Thanks Doug. Walnut, Birch and Maple!
That form has a really elegant subtlety. Doesn't call attention, just confidently functional. Good work, Gary.
Thanks Jay.
I was just sitting in the house thinking of a shape to make.
Made a pencil sketch and liked it.
Left the sketch in the house and went to my lathe and made this.
I never plan turnings like this.
I meant to show the sketch.
Was really happy with it
Gary
Beautiful bowl Gary.
Thank you kindly Jack happy you liked it.
Gary
Enjoyed your beautiful bowl. Don't have Burch wood here in Arkansas. We do have walnut, maple, cedar, Osage orange and oak plus other woods. Wish I could share some.
Thank you Paul. We do not have Osage Orange and I sure wish we did. I love the wood.
Thanks for wattching,
Gary
Beautiful Bowl!!!. Very nice piece of wood!!! I also like the old man face branch carving on the back of your lathe keeping an eye on you and your work. I don't know if that is new, or I never noticed it before. But it caught my eye.
Thanks so much John. That is called a Wood Spirt. I got into carving them a number of years ago. One time when out camping with two of our grandsons I carved each one of them one and then behind the camp on a trail I carved one on a live branch.
I have a magnet on the base of the one on my lathe so he can remind me to relax.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Lovely bowl Gary. We don’t get much birch down here in Oz. It looks like jacaranda, which we do get a lot of.
Thank you Greg. I think there is a lot of wood with more than one name.
Nice bowl. Very well done. Great finish. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂
Thank you Glen your comments are always appreciated.
Take care,
Gary
It is lovely Gary! I’m sure it will age to an even nicer rich colour over time. I don’t get much birch, but I do occasionally turn poplar and aspen which I believe is very similar. Cheers, Rick
Thanks Rick. It will be interesting seeing how it ages.
Thanks for watching.
Gary
Beautiful and thank you.
Happy you liked it and thanks for watching,
Gary
I love turning Birch. It is a very forgiving wood to turn. Always a pleasure to watch you
Thanks Chris. I have more pieces that Dave gave me. Looking forward to turning more.
Gary
nice little bowl
Thanks Delbert!
beautiful
Thank you grambear8
The end result was so satisfying. The shape and colors just about perfection.
Thank you Craig. I appreciate you watching and commenting.
Gary
Although a simple bowl it's really beautiful Gary. Also, Phil Anderson would be proud of how you removed the tenon.
Thank you Stuart. Phil really started something with that tenon removal trick.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Wow, another wonderful bowl Gary.
Thank you very much Laura I appreciate you watching and commenting.
Gary
Thank you, Dave! Nicely shaped bowl, Gary. Always fun to turn a piece of wood that does not fight back.
Thanks you Valerie. I guess that is what I loved about this piece. It did everything I ask of it and more.
Wish I could say that for the one I have in the lathe right now.
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 Try to enjoy the challenge!😜
Beautiful bowl Gary and I really enjoyed seeing your audience of one observing your work.
Thanks Dick.He love wood turning and helps out a lot LOL
I really do love watching your process, and you provide a great commentary, like having an old friend in the shop walking you through a project!
Thank you Tony I really appreciate your comments.
Gary
Thanks Gary!
Thank you John. I appreciate you watching.
Gary
A very pretty piece of wood for sure Gary. You videos are always very enjoyable. Thank you for sharing. See you next time
Thanks so much Albert. For sure this piece of wood is pretty special.
Gary
Very nice a beautiful bowl. I love watching you videos. Thanks.
Thank you David. I appreciate you watching and commenting.
Gary
Hello Gary I have turned birch but nothing as pretty as that. Nice job mate, cheers Bram
Thanks Bram. The votes were counted and the burl won. But the Guava is on the list.
Thanks for your vote,
Gary
Gorgeous work pcs of pcs Arfs
Thanks so much Gaetan!
Take care,
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 you welcome
Very, very nice bowl! And, surprisingly, you actually got one of the few pieces without grub tunnels. Most of the blanks I have left from the rest of that tree are horribly bored throughout. Well turned, indeed!
Thanks Dave. I still have at least two pices. We will find out if they have grub tunnels LOL.
Gary
Really nice bowl, Gary. But will it hold enough popcorn?
Bill
Thanks Bill. Wont hold enough popcorn for me but should hold enough M&M's 😎
Thanks for watching,
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 Or Smarties for Gord.
That's a gooder, Gary!! Nice shape & color. I like it!
As you were turning the wood, I noticed all the wood shavings on your arm. If I didn't know better, I would have thunk you were turning into Big Foot or the creature from the dark lagoon.😂
I guess it is still cool up your way since you were wearing a long sleeve sweat shirt. Or was that for protection against the flying shavings?
Thanks John I just looked. When the shavings were hitting my arm it was May 21 10:30am. So it was certainly not hot here. I think it may have been in the low 50's It is 5:45 PM today and it is 87 degrees. I love it!
Nice work Gary and another beautiful piece for sure, birch is beautiful wood. Curious what the story is with the wood carved face that can be seen in the video background at the 14:00 mark... Thanks for these great videos! Ted
Thank you Ted. I appreciate your comments.
So the carved figure is something I did a few years ago. It is called a Wood Sprit. I did some when we took two of our grandsons camping and they loved them.
A good friend asked me to carve 7 for presents which I did. All different and came out pretty cool.
Mine has a magnet on the base do I can place it on the lathe to keep an eye on me LOL.
Take care,
Gary
Request……ln the near future, would you please turn a Chalace.
Thank you Joespine. I will put it on my list. I have turned on and not sure if I made a video. I gave it as a gift.
Gary
Wow, there is some beautiful Chaytoyance going on. A lot of woodworkers think birch is plain and is only for furnitureand cabinets. I think it beautiful! Poplar is also very pretty. 😊 a beautiful bowl Gary.
Thank you very much Jane. For sure a lot of furniture is made from it. I do like how a bowl looks with it.
Thanks for watching,
Gary

@@williamellis8993 Hi Bill
Bill...who the heck is Bill LOL
Hey Bill!
Well sure you are. When you get up before breakfast you can always be first LOL
Can i ask what the medallion on your scraper is and what its for? Looked through your older videos and can't find anything about it.
Thank you Alan. I did mention it one time when i started using it. Because the tool is ground on both sides I use that magnet to let me know which side was up when I put the burr on it.
Thank you.
Beautiful
Thank you Edward I appreciate you watching,
Gary
