Thank you Michael. The other day I took a break to put some ribs in my smoker. And a few days later some salmon. We share the cooking around here. I always choose the fun stuff LOL. Thanks for watching, Gary
Hi Gary. That’s a beautiful little bowl! I was fortunate to meet a cabinet maker who was cleaning out his shop and getting rid of a lot of wood he never seemed to use. One of those was purpleheart. I ended up taking away 40 or 50 pounds of it in all different shapes and sizes. Some are ends of 3 by 8 planks. I’ve been making kitchen mallets. Laminating hard maple , oak and then purple heart on the ends. Every timer a family member sees mine, I have to make another! Cheers, Rick
Thank you Rick. I came across a plank 2 inch thick piece of Purple Heart at a garage sale years ago. It was 2 inch thick by 12 inches wide and almost 7 feet long. I like your idea of the kitchen mallets. I am sure will not make an electric guitar body out of it LOL Gary
Catching up on my woodturning video watching. Purpleheart is such a beautiful wood and stands alone very well. Glad you had an easy one this week. Interesting new produce from Acks. Can't wait to see more of it being used.
Beautiful Bowl Gary! Ya definitely picked a perfect color of a shirt to turn that one to 😎 my wife said I believe he definitely picked that shirt for turning that one! Enjoyed the video 👍
Thanks Kimsey. Well it is one of the only sweat shirts I have that does not have holes in it LOL. Your wife may be right LOL Thanks for watching my friend, Gary
Purple Heart is one of my favorite exotic woods. I like combining it with other types of wood in bowls and cutting boards. Very well done 👍. Love the finish on it. Thanks for sharing and take care Gary.
Gary, it’s a terrific bowl! It is sure hard, but you make it look easy. I think the new finish looks great. I’ll anticipate more of your turnings will be showing it off. Really like your videos.
Good evening, Gary. You are correct, Purple Heart is hard wood. I liked your thoughts about leaving the bottom bigger, more room for the candy. Nice plan. I haven't heard about the new Acks product. Looking forward to more results along with the fluorescent light to brighten the Purple Heart. See ya next time around, Brother.
Thanks Ray. Always sacrifice design for more candy LOL I plan on a more scientific test with the florescent light. Results soon. The new Acks paste has options for sure Take care my brother, Gary

I've never turned any but I have some flat pieces around here, somewhere. I've heard it turns brown when exposed to sunlight. It'll be interesting to see how yours does after your experiments. Good job, buddy! 😊 Phil
Thank you Phil. Oh I have need quick and easy lately Yes the piece I got this from is a huge 2 inch thick blank. It was so dark at the garage sale I got it probably 5 years ago they thought it was Black Walnut. I ended up getting it even though it was too heavy for Walnut. Was not till I cut a piece did I know it was purple heart. Next two will be easy as well. If sinus issue clears up I am picking beast with a good chance of it not working out. But what the heck. Thanks for watching my friend, Gary
I can’t wait to see what the fluorescent light does for the look of your project. It certainly looks good already. Keep on doing what you do it’s the best.
Hi Gary... I love "simple " Its what I do best.. Haha... Beautiful Purple heart bowl, nicely turned and a great finish... Take care my friend...All the best.....Andy
Purple heart is beautiful wood, I agree with you about it being very hard. My husband makes cutting boards and often uses strips of purple heart incorporated with other woods. He usually gives me the scraps to make bottle stoppers, or he glues up scrap bowl blanks for me. Gonna have to try the middle step finish from Ack's. Tom's products are the only finishing products I use other than paste wax once in a while. The Chaytoyance is fantastic. Have a great weekend!❤
Great project Gary. I love the way that it turned out. And easy projects are always good, especially if you have limited time. You can still come up with something satisfying, as you show us here. I like the new finish, and I may try it out. Thank you for sharing. See you next week.
Very nice, Gary. Simple, functional and beautiful. OK, so much for the turning. A 2-part question: 1) How'd the soup come out? 2) When are you going to share some of THAT with us? 😋😉
gary very nice bowl, ive turned purpleheart on a pen but never on a bowl good job my friend! take care of yourself ok? just remember, God loves u, God bless. Chris
That's a nice colour and grain, had to look it up, never heard of purple heart, bit late we catching up had a holiday since the last video. All the best from Lincolnshire UK
I like the wood and the bowl of course, but I really like what you did to shape the bottom of the bowl. I am looking forward to seeing the results of your light experiment. Thanks for the fun. This video gave me a pleasant break after doing an outside painting job on my workshop. Warm and steamy out there this morning. Haha.
Thank you Travis. Happy you liked how it turned out. It was 93 here a few days ago. On those days I like to lay in the lawn recliner because I know it won't last. Thanks for watching, Gary
Ah, a fellow soup maker ,my favourite is leek and potatoe 😃I haven't turned purple heart before .I'm going have to see if I can get a piece from an off cut shop over in Essex. Its a beautiful colour and bowl Gary,I'll look forward to the light experiment . Cheers Bram
Thanks Bram My favorite soup to make is ZUPPA TOSCANA. A copy of The Oliver Gardens version. Although I have made big changes to it. I never get the recipe out. Things changed based on the potatoes. They can really change things a lot. So finial seasoning is at the end. I am going to run the test again because I had finish on it. I sanded that off and will set things up and give a a fair chance. Thanks for watching my friend, Gary
As you said, your purpleheart bowl is a simple and beautiful project. The Ack's Middle Step Finish looks like a good idea, and I look forward to trying it. Thanks for the video.
Love the purple heart! I turned some last year and let it sit in direct sunlight for a couple days and the purple color brightened up. Take care, Stuart
That is very interesting Stuart. Everyone says if the direct son shines on it then it will darken. Did you have finish on yours when you sat it in the son? I am making a list of things to try. Take care, Gary
@@ThePapa1947 yes, it had finish on it. I think it either walnut oil or Howard’s Feed-n-wax. I almost always use oil or wax based finishes for everything I turn
Purpleheart, one of my most favorite woods. It's getting hard for me to get though, expensive. That's a beautiful bowl Gary. Great color. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂
Thank you Glen. A number of years ago I got a large plank of Purple Heart at a garage sale. I had aged some much did not ever know what it was. But it was a great price. It was 2"X12"X6.5 feet long. Still a lot left. Thanks for watching, Gary

Lovely piece of timber Gary. Very simple design to show off the Beaty of the wood. I normally don’t like glossy finishes but this bowl may have benefitted from a more gloss finish.. Perhaps a smaller base as well
Thanks Bill! That is 2 votes for M&M's I just watched a show on How food changed American on the History channel. One episode talks about how M&M's came to be. Very interesting show.
Very nice bowl, Gary. Great chatoyancy. I appreciated seeing the finish comparisons. I recently turned a friend on to shellac as a sanding sealer. He was all about straight to tung oil after sanding then buffing with a cloth system. He couldn't figure out why I had a better shine but wouldn't try my methods (nearly identical to yours). Now, he's hooked on shellac, meanwhile I'm enjoying the more satin finish of an oil, lately. Good video and I hope you're well.
Thank you Jay. There is no perfect finish for all types of turnings. I use shellac on almost all natural looking pieces. Segments there are no rules. Depends on the piece. Take care, Gary
Yes it is expensive. This piece came from a large board I bought at a garage sale. It is 12 inches wide and 6 1/2 feet long and 2 inches thick. I got a really good deal on it, There are lots of blanks left if I want to use it like this. Could make a lot of pens but I do not turn pens. Thanks for watching, Gary
Thank You Gary... Quick and Easy Purple Heart turned out nice. Gary you are always experimenting with new techniques, shapes and finishes. Enjoyable show this morning and until next time.... TM
Thanks for all your videos. I’ve learned a lot. I make segmented bowls with maple and Purpleheart. I’ve been using Crystal Lac Brite Tone Satin finish. The maple doesn’t yellow and the Purpleheart looks great.
Wow, that wood is lovely! The chatoyance on the outside adds to the attractiveness. The shine provided by the new finish is very nice. I like that it contributes a glow that is more subtle than the glass-like finish that lacquer sometimes produces. (With that said, lacquer looks good too, but I really like the shine that you have given this piece. You mentioned possibly using it as a bowl to hold candy: a bowl like this deserves to have the best candy served in it. Thank you for sharing your work with us.
Thank you Deirdre. I do like this finish a lot. Now if it was a segment piece that is just meant for display I tend to like a nice shine. Not for everyone but I like it. Thank you for watching, Gary
Thank you Donald. Came from a long plank that has been in my shop for probably 6 years. Was dry when I got it. The person that had it did wood carving. Thanks for watching, Gary
Thank you Al, for sure Purple Heart is a unique and special wood. I suppose the shipping is the reason why he does not ship to Canada. Thanks for watchng, Gary
Now all you need is a big bag of M&Ms for your purple heart bowl. I think all the colors of those small pieces of candy will bring out the color of the wood. Nice one, Gary!! Must still be cool up in Oregon since you are wearing a long sleeve sweat shirt. Not too bad here either, but Houston south of us got badly clobbered yesterday.
Thank you John. For sure M&M's would look great in there. Well last week we were in the 90's But back in the 60's for a bit Sure felt nice laying in the backyard. A lot hotter now that those 3 big trees are gone. One fell over and the 2 were cut down.😢. Thanks for watching, Gary
Very cool Gary. I love purple heart but I don't love how it gets dark over time. I feel like I should've used walnut. Tom's abrasive paste is really good stuff. I have bought it several times however recently I have discovered Howard Wax it All. Using 4 ot steel wool it is really nice and much , much cheaper. Have a great week.
Thank you Rick. Yes about the only way I have kept it purple is to not have it near any window light. You are right though. If you have Walnut I say turn it. I have not seen the Howard Wax It All. I will look into that. Thanks for watching, Gary
I have to agree that simple is fun. I have purple heart all in pen blank type of stuff but I use it for finials and that type of thing. However when I turn it it always turns brown and for that reason I'm not too fond of it. I know all the techniques on bring out the purple again and I have limited success with them. You take purple heart and put your tools to it and it stays purple through out. Hmm-I must be doing something wrong. I'll have to play around with it some more. Nice piece Gary. BTW I use Acks products and didn't know that had that new finish. Might have to check that our
Thank you David. I think where you have it placed in the light if it stays purple or not. I know till I turned this piece you could not see any purple. Thanks for watching, Gary
I love turning purple hear but haven't done it in a while. I love the color when freshly turned but hate the fact that sooner or later it will turn brownish. Wish there-was a way to preserve the purple color. Do you think your fluorescent light treatment will help? Nice job on the bowl.
Thank you Tom. I did try the light and think I may have seen some improvement in one area. But I did have finish oh. So I will sand up a board and test it. Updates in a few weeks. Right now I am a bit behind on things,,,uggg Take care, Gary
Thanks so much Ian. I recently changed it to 38 degrees on both sides. I had it at 40 per side for along time. Both work good just want to try something different. I like it. Thanks for watching, Gary
Hello, your videos are practical, to the point and excellent. Thank you for that. Am asking for your advice-bowl turned from Sapele. Watco danish oil-natural-applied. Friend recommended spraying with lacquer -several coats. Your thoughts? Also, do you ever apply spray lacquer over ACKs wood polish (both sanding and then polishing paste wax). Any advice you good provide would be appreciated. Thanks, dave watkin
Thank David I appreciate your comments. With Sapele I like to spray lacquer on the bare wood building up multiple layers. I then will use the Acks abrasive paste for a final polish. I also use wipe on poly the same way. I do not use Danish oil under those finishes. Hope that helps, Gary
@ThePapa1947 Sorry! I was having a Real Bad day. I Love Purple Heart, it's one of my favorite wood species. I have quite a bit in my workshop. The finished piece looks Great!😅

Nice job Gary. Purple is so interesting. I love how it works opposite to UV light, getting more brilliant with exposure. Beautiful stuff. Well done!

Beautiful result. Think I like more the sanding sealer used the previous videos though
Thank you very much.
Yes I do like the other finish a lot as well.
Gary
Thank you for watching,
Gary
Gary, nice bowl. From the sound of the wood, it looks like it was pretty dry.
Thank you Donald. Came from a long plank that has been in my shop for probably 6 years. Was dry when I got it. The person that had it did wood carving.

Beautiful bowl and purple heart is special! I love the finish too but Ack does not ship to Canada! Well done and thanks!
Cheers Al
Thank you Al, for sure Purple Heart is a unique and special wood.
I suppose the shipping is the reason why he does not ship to Canada.
Thanks for watchng,
Gary

Thanks, Gary. I hope the light trick works.
Thanks Bobby. I left it under the light for 12 hours and did see a change in one area. More to follow,
Gary
Nice
Thank you Patricia!

Simple but beautiful.
Thank you! 😊
Thanks for watching,
Gary
it is beautiful --
Thank you Lynda! I appreciate you watching,

simple, but elegant! I wonder what a black light would do? The UV might interact strongly with the purpleheart????
Thank you Jim. Might have to check that out. I do have a small black light.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
I've never heard of purple heart. Where does it come from? Beautiful piece!!!
Looking it up I see it grows in central and south America. Had no idea.
Right now I am a bit behind on things,,,uggg
Take care,
Gary
Great colors and sheen..
What angles is your scraper ground too. Sure makes nice shavings and leaves a great finish cut.
Ian
Canada
Thanks so much Ian. I recently changed it to 38 degrees on both sides. I had it at 40 per side for along time.
Both work good just want to try something different. I like it.

Hope that helps,
Gary
