- I turned another bowl with a ring glued into it. This is how you make Celtic Knots.
The Cherry wood is more than beautiful. Full of amazing grain and features.
Special thanks to both Rick and Paul for helping this piece of wood find it's way to my shop.
I loved turning this piece of wood.
Let me know if you liked it.

Great story Gary. It really is a small world after all.
Thank you Dick! Yes at times it seems so so big but then this reminds us that it is not really.
Beautiful bowl. Making one with a gift in mind is a great thing indeed
Thank you Garth. It sure is but then I do not dare mess it up because I have no more of that cherry at the moment.
But I turned it like I would any other bowl and it worked out fine.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
That is a stunning piece, Gary! One of my favourite turnings that I have seen you do. I hope you had as much fun turning it as I had watching you do it. 👏👏👏
All the best,
…..Gord
Thank you Gord...oh yeah I had lots of fun turning this one. Sure glad you had fun watching it my friend.
Take care,
Gary
The Sapele Ring makes this piece for me Gary.
The right thickness and the right amount of curve in it.
I loved the locating dowels you used to align the top and bottom pieces. The grain match was perfect.
Lovely story behind the wood and I'm sure Paul will cherish the bowl for a long time.
Take care my friend.
Cheers, Huw
Thank you very much Huw. I fell in love with Sapele after hearing you talk about it. Thanks for that!
The steaming was really fun and I used my own cast iron pan. Laverna does not like it as it is so heavy. But I cook a lot of things in it that finish in the oven so it is needed. Oh wait that has nothing to do with wood turning LOL
Take care and good to see you back making videos. Must feel good.
Cheers,
Gary
A great design, great turning, great finish and a great story! I love everything about this video, Gary! It's amazing how the Sapele just bent so well with a little steaming. That part was cool, too! Well done, my friend! 😃
Phil
Thanks Phil. I will have a follow up on the steaming. I am sure there will be a lot of interest in trying it.
That Cherry tree sure produced some beautiful l wood.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Gary, another beautiful piece and the story behind this bowl is interesting as well, thanks for sharing and someone is getting a great gift!
Thank you Michael. I know it was well liked and appreciated. And the bowl is now back where the tree grew for years.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Another beautiful bowl Gary nicely done as always, thanks for sharing,
Kind regards From will 😊👍
Thank you Will. I appreciate you watching,
Gary
great job and super finish. also; great heart you have giving the beautiful bowl to the gentleman who supplied the raw wood.
Thank you Wayne. Many times a homeowner does not want the tree taken down but has to. I think giving them something from that tree means a lot to them and me.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Beautiful bowl for sure, Gary. And a great video. Cool back story on the wood too. Take care. 😊😊😊
Thank you Rob. Every piece of wood has a story and some should be shared. Well the kiln dried wood I get at Crosscut Hardwoods does not have that much of a story. Well it does but I would have no part of it except the drive over there LOL
Whoa!!! Absolutely gorgeous, especially that grain and the contrasting band of color.
Thanks Cecilia happy you liked it.
I found another nice piece of teak I forgot about. So I will use it soon.
Gary
Looks Awesome Gary! I never saw one done like that before, I may have to give that a try sometime, Paul is gonna love the bowl, that is definitely a pretty cool story, enjoyed the video 👍
Thanks Kimsey. I am sure you would have fun making one.
Take care my friend,
Gary
Grand bowl, grand story, grand job. Steady in that workshop Papa All the best from Lincolnshire UK
Thank you very much Gary. I try to keep everything where I can reach it and have a tall stool behind in case I just feel like taking a rest.
Thanks for watching my friend,
Gary
11,000 views and only 595 likes. It’s lovely, Gary, especially so because you are back on your feet and the heartwarming story at the end 🌞
Thank you Ray. It is sure nice to be able to walk around instead of hop around using a walker.
Take care,
Gary
Thank You Gary.... You perhaps are still in a bit of pain BUT you seem do be doing pretty good & slowly getting back to your regular self ?... This was very cool Gary.. That small piece of firewood has traveled around until landing in your shop and it will now be protected, admired and handed down many times throughout the years ahead. Not to bad of a life for a piece of firewood thanks to you Gary.... I look forward to your future projects & until next time...... TM
Thank you TM. Yes a little bit of pain and I could see how I was careful when moving for a different tool.
But for sure getting better and the PT is helping me get my foot pointed straight instead of looking like a penguin LOL
Yes the wood has done some traveling. Sure is beautiful Cherry for sure.
Take care,
Gary
Long time no see. Beautiful work as always. I’ve been working with some Sapele mahogany all week. I’m doing a salad bowl set for a friend. The chatoyance is absolutely beautiful in that wood. Hope you’re doing well Gary.
Thank you Keith. Sapele does not seem to be as popular as it should be. Lots of chatoyance in it like you said.
Doing pretty good thank you,
Gary
That's a beautiful bowl Gary! Thanks for sharing. I've steam bent wood when I built my canoes but never considered incorporating it into my wood turning. Something to keep in mind.
I was always going to build a steamer for bending sides for acoustic guitars. Just one of those things on the list I did not do.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
That is a beautiful Bowl. I think Paul is going to really enjoy receiving that bowl. The way you did the Sapele strip was very neat. I was wondering how thick that Sapele is? I am guessing 3/8 of an inch? See if I am close.
Thank you so much John. I thought I mentioned how thick it was but maybe I forgot. It was 1/4 of an inch thick.
I think you could do it with 3/8 thick as long as you steamed it long enough.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
That bowl looks AMAZING! The colours are great... cherry is one of my favourites 😁💙
Thank you Heather. It is amazing how different some of the Cherry trees look. This reminds me of Wild Cherry.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
What a great idea Gary! I love how it turned out. Such a beautiful colour and grain accented by the contrast ring. I wouldn’t mind seeing a little more about how you bent the Sapele. You sure don’t scrimp on glue 😊. It’s a great story. I like how things come around. You never know! Thank again for sharing a cool idea and a fun story. Cheers, Rick
Thank you very much Rick. Maybe I will make a short on how to bend the wood. At one time I planned on building and acoustic guitar and would have had to make a steaming device. Of course the wood would be much thinner.
Now my mind is on making a Ventures model Mosrite body. Will I get around to it....who knows LOL
The most fun I had on turning this was thinking of what I had planned for the piece. Little did I know it was going to be such a beautiful piece of wood. Makes it all the much better.
Take care,
Gary
Thanks very much gary, glad to see you getting back to your self again. Loved the process of cutting the wood freehand and bending with steam. Great instructional value.
Not sure whether the sapele enhanced the natural beauty of the cherry. So was the time spent on prep worth the effort or could a flat piece of sapele done the same. Good questions I’m sure?
As a teaching video the time spent was definitely worth it for me and I would do the same for the experience and novelty value just because it’s an interesting technique and I’d love to do it. I’m sure you would have the same attitude to Gary.
Greatly appreciate what you do, keep it up mate.
All the best to you and your family gary from down under inOz.
If it wasn’t for postage rates and quarantine problems I’d love to send you some pieces of Ozzie timber to demonstrate with, some Gidgee or ironbark or banksia.
Just too expensive and too many problems unfortunately.
Thank you very much Greg. Well you could put a flat piece in there but it would just be an accent ring. It would look ok. But this gives it some curve which really makes it stand out.
Anytime I see something I have not done that looks cool I make an effort to try it.
Yes postage rates are crazy now.
I have purchased some wood from down under. There is a local store called Down Under Hardwoods. I have not gone there but I think a lot of it is for flooring.
I wish I could find some Yellow Heart but none around here for years now. I like it for segmented work. It comes kiln dried in around 1 inch thick when you could find it.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Gary that bowl turned out awesome I love the Minwax finish. I like the shinier product. Very nice indeed.
Thank you very much Ken. I know some do not like shiny but with this grain it really brings it to life.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
That's a beautiful bowl Gary! Love the design you incorporated!
Thank you Capt. John. Happy you liked it.
So if I may ask where did the Capt. come from?
Gary
Hi Gary, Great finish to another project! I enjoy the story behind your acquisition of the wood and the full circle it is taking, certainly good karma! Take care and keep turning!!
Thank you Michael. I sure enjoyed making it. That piece has been doing some traveling and now it will end up where it grew for many years.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
This is a great design Gary. I was expecting something more like a veneer inlay, but this was a hundred time better. I'm sure Paul will love it.
You seem to be more mobile every week. Soon you will be out playing with the other kids. ;-D
Thank you Gil! I like this way better than the veneer I bought. Not even sure what it was. It was called dyed veneer.
Yes getting along much better. No longer using the walker or the knee scooter. I do use a cane at the moment.
Well when the boss lets me out to play maybe LOL.
Nice job yet again Gary. Love the projects that you do as even as a novice I feel I have the ability to do them after your teaching. Keep up the recovery & take care, keep safe & stay well. That's a cool thing your doing Gary with giving a little back to Paul 👍
Thank you Jim. This one is pretty easy to do. If you do not want to steam some wood you can buy thin veneer.
But I think steaming a 1/4 inch piece was fun.
Paul was really interested in the first one and I understand. I do not sell and my wife took dibs on it. So this worked out great. I really like the wood in this one but there is more where it came from LOL.
Take care,
Gary
Beautiful looking bowl Gary. I think I will have to try that myself. Paul is going to love it. Continue taking care of that ankle and thanks for sharing 😊.
Thank you very much Scott. It is pretty easy to do and I think you will have lots of fun doing it.
I just finished my morning ankle exercises and they are getting easier.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
My daughter in law manages 10 Orvis store in the South east. I will show her your work and or is jacket.
Terrell Price
Thank you Terrell! This is my all time favorite jacket! Wife got it for me at Costco. I wish they had more in stock.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
That's a really great bowl, and a really good story to go with it. I think that where the wood comes from is an important part of the piece, and should be preserved if possible. Makes it a fun part of the project. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you very much Mark. Any time a tree is cut down it is nice to have memories of it.
Our friends had to have a Walnut tree cut down because it looked like it was dying. HOA pushed hard on it.
I got the whole tree and they have a number of turnings from it. Even though they moved to Indiana they still have the memory of the tree. It was a beauty and a shame.
Sure glad I do not live in an HOA or they would be SOL.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Hi Gary, great technique with the veneer and interesting wave look. The grain and knot feature are interesting. Do you really need the dowels or does it slip too much without them?
I enjoyed the story and I’m glad you’re turning 👍.
Thank you Skip. I think it could be done without them or maybe just one in the middle. But once I start clamping I do not want to back the clamps off to align anything so I just use the dowels.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
That is a really cool idea! And you can never go wrong with Cherry and Sapele. Another beautiful piece, Gary. I hope rhe foot and ankle are getting better. Have a great weekend my friend.
Thank you very much Jane. It does make a nice combo for sure.
Foot is getting there I do PT at home as well as Monday mornings with the therapist. I am able to walk better with my foot pointing forward. Still some to go on that.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Very nice Gary. I wondered at first how you were going to get a ring in the bowl but I had confidence you would. I really enjoy watching your videos. Thanks Gary
Thank you Dave. I just may have to make a special jig for doing even more of these.
I appreciate you watching,
Gary
Gary, that is a fine piece of artwork. You did a great job with it. The ring gives it an interesting characteristic. I always enjoy your videos. Take care my friend. Rudy
Thank you Rudy I appreciate your comments. Happy you enjoy my videos.
Take care,
Gary
You have a big heart and a GREAT skill!
keep turning
charley
Thank you Charlie I appreciate your comments.
Gary
That was very interesting to watch, Gary. Very cool method and great results.
As for the story, that might be the most fulfilling part of my nearby turning community, the generosity. Gifts and tools go around when someone needs something or has extra to offer.
Thank you very much Jay. Seems like you have a great wood turning community!
Take care,
Gary
Gary , you are such a nice guy . I bet the guy is going to be stoked to receive such a gift . Especially since it came from his yard . Aren't these little bowls just fun to make ? I like doing these after a little more difficult turning . Thank you for sharing and have a great weekend . It is really great to see you up and about .
Thanks so much Jon! Yes they are lots of fun to do. Trying to keep them small and easy for a bit. But I am working my way back to a big piece I have been waiting to do.
Take care,
Gary
Great looking bowl, Gary! And a cool story! I'm sure Paul will love it!
Thank you Billy, it was sure fun to do.
Gary
Hi Gary how are you I hope you are alright, I watch all your videos, I just think your videos are interesting, I don't know anything about wood turning, so I was wondering why the things you make you put a tenant on them, anyway I hope you didn't mind me asking, take care and stay safe x
Hi Sue you can ask what ever you want.
So two of the choices are a tenon or a recess. I will use a recess if the bowl blank is not very tall just to keep the height as much as I can. In this case I used a tenon because when shaping it there was going be wood that was not used in the shape so I made a tenon. They both will work and what I am finishing up now has a recess because it was not a very thick blank. You will see that next week.
Gary
Nice bowl and concept with the darker wood (can't spell it). The short story was great to listen to. Thanks for all you do to inspire all of us woodturners. Your Tennessee Woodbees wood turner
Thank you Randy. It is spelled Sapele.
We passed through Tennessee in 2016 on a long motor home trip. Love the state.
Gary
Such a lovely piece Gary. I am so lucky to have creative people like you having these neat ideas that I can copy. I've had my brain checked several time and the creative gene just isn't there! Thanks for sharing this and many other great videos.
Thank you Tom I appreciate your comments.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Nice! I love the technique. Will have to give it a try sometime. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thanks Valerie I am sure you will have fun.
Very nice bowl Gary, also a very nice story .I think when we give to others, it will bless us beyond our beliefs. So good to see you getting around, keep up the good work.
Thank you very much Mark. Yes it is a good feeling to give. Good thing I said I was doing it from the start or that grain would have been hard to part with LOL....just kidding,
Gary
Beautiful bowl , love the story. I love to make a bowl for someone special it gives me a warm feeling I really like.😢
Thank you Dennis! Yes it is nice when someone is surprised to get a special bowl.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
a super super great job keeping coming iam in Australia teaching my self with vedios like this
Thanks so much Andre I appreciate you watching.
Have fun with your turning,
Gary
When you mention the size bowl gouge are you saying the flute size or the shaft size? Thanks
I always refer to it as the shank size. Even though my Robert Sorby tools are the flute size.
Amazing little project Gary. You may have given me an idea with a piece of Rhodesian Teak that I have to turn. Great video.
Thank you Japie! I can see all kinds of options in doing this. Pretty fun stuff. Have fun with your project.
Gary
Excellent, glad to see you’re on your feet long enough to do another project. Hope you’re healing well. After my park bench rebuild I’ve had too many chores around the house to get into the shop. I love seeing the ideas you come up with and hope you keep them coming…
Tom
Thank you very much Tom it is good to be able stand long enough to turn. But I do take a break every 20 minutes.
Always lots of chores to do. I am working on 3 things at once it seems. Two of them I can sit down and do.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
This is an absolutely gorgeous bowl. I loved the story. Thanks for a great video.
Thank you Lee I appreciate your comments.
Take care,
Gary
Really nice, Gary. I'm sure he will like it. It's great to see you as mobile as you are.
Bill
Thank you Bill, it is great being able to get around. Maybe slower than I like but still much closer to normal.
Take care,
Gary
Gary
If you had to choose one scraper would you get a standard scraper or a negative scraper.
Never used one yet but I want to
Without a doubt I would go negative rake.
Mine came as standard grind so I ground it to be negative rake.
Thank you Gary, I always enjoyed your videos and I do learn from them.
Thank you Dwight I appreciate you watching and commenting.
Gary
That turned out really neat, I especially like the ring of cherry in it. Very creative.
Thank you Dale. I appreciate your comments.
Gary
Looking good! I've made it a habit to return bowls to everyone who gives me wood. They love it and feels good to share...
Thank you very much. Everyone who has had a tree taking down and offered wood they get a bowl to remember the tree.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Wow. You always come up with great ideas for new turnings.
Thank you very much! Happy you like it and thanks for watching,
Gary
Glue and a wet piece of inlay? That a new one on me! Looks mighty fine though!
Thank you. It was not soaking wet. It was more just the surface. The steam let the piece relax into the shape.
Great story Papa47 and nice project- i love it when projects mean something special.
Thank you very much! You are right about that. Almost every tree we have cut down or trimmed I have turned something out of it.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Gary sorry hit the wrong button that bowl is beautiful, and also great to see you back at the lathe, hope all is well.
Thank you Alan. No problem you can always just hit the other one and it will change.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Terrific job! That finish really does justice to the bowl!
Thank you Michael! Happy you liked it and I appreciate you watching,
Gary
Great video! Good to see you back! Beautiful finish!

@@ThePapa1947 always!
Good evening, Gary.
I was glued to this video. Excellent design, excellent bowl, excellent story. Definitely want to give this a try. See you next time, my friend.
Thank you Ray. For sure give it a try. I will have a follow up "short" on the process in a few days which you might want to see.
Take care buddy!
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 I will be watching for your follow up.
Hi Gary - nice piece of work as always.
I am actually looking for some advice if you would not mind. I have some very nice Juniper and would like your thoughts on a suggested finish. I am not concerned about being food safe or not because pending which it is I will adjust my decision of what to turn. Thanks and kind regards - long time subscriber Dennis, from Ontario Canada
With the contrast that Juniper can have I like a clear finish like Polycrylic which is water based and easy to wipe on
Shellac is a good option as well
Thanks Gary - Much appreciated
Very cool turning. I like the sapele ring.
Thank you Jerry I appreciate you watching,
Gary
Beautiful bowl! Wish I was the one getting it 😊
Thank you very much. Very happy you like it.
Gary
Very pretty Gary love the look and love the story as well
Thank you very much Wade. I sure enjoyed making it.
Take care,
Gary
Really cool story! You're a good man, Gary!
Well thank you Vince I appreciate that.
Gary
Another great creation! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Larry and thanks for watching,
Gary
Nice, nice bowl. Well done. I sure like cherry wood. I had just come in from working on the first step for making a segmented bud vase when I saw this video while eating lunch. I do not have a lathe so I will need to use other tools to shape it. Haha. Thanks for sharing your awesome work.
Thanks Travis. your non turned segmented bowl sounds cool. Love to see a picture when it is done.
Gary
I will send you a photo when I finish it. It may take a while with doing things with family and doing what my cats tell me. Haha. Keep in mind that I am not at all on your level in woodworking. Haha@@ThePapa1947
Great finish, really shows the grain.
Thank you Harry. It is one of my favorite finishes.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Very beautiful bowl.n neat story too.

Cool project, interesting story
Thank you very much Tim. I sure thought it was and was worth telling. Happy you liked it.
Gary
That's such a great turn! Love it! Hope you'll be at the Symposium!
Thank you Anthony. I plan on being there for a little bit. Not sure I will be up to walking around all day though. I will see how the PT goes.
I assume you will be? Do you live local?
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 I am up in Spokane, but still have family there in the Portland Area, and I am excited for the Symposium. I have learned so much from your videos, I would love a chance to shake your hand and buy you a beverage!
Fantastic bowl, thanks
Thank you very much James I appreciate you watching,
Gary
Thank you Gary, a bowl built with purpose is always special. I'm sure Paul is going to love it. You have built a piece to be handed down for generations. Glad to see your getting around better.
Thank you very much Rick. One of the best times I have had turning something. Just knowing what I had planned made it all the much better. But I sure had to make sure it came out to be what I planned. The grain was much nicer thank I expected.
Send me his address when you get a chance.
Gary
The wavy ring really adds to the beauty of this piece.
Thank you Randy I appreciate you watching and commenting,
