I’m sitting with my feet up and a glass of whisky in my hand after spending an afternoon at my lathe watching the master at work. A perfect end to my day 🌞
I grew up in Florida and we had a guava tree in our backyard. My mom and grandma made guava jelly and we also ate the delicious fruit. I probably never gave the wood a second thought, but it sure is pretty.
You can definitely see that it came from a tree with that live edge. So much more character than a bowl turned from a symmetrical blank, just love it..
Thank you Michael. I have a couple of pieces that I think are too far gone to make a nice turning but I have not tossed them yet. So I guess we never know for sure what is on the inside. Thanks for watching, Gary
So cool I watched it twice. Actually after I started it the first time "life" intervened and I missed most of the process and the finished product. I had to come back and watch it to see. Very nice bowl, glad I checked again.
Thank you Tom. Well I looked at the piece whole for sometime. This is what made sense to me. Now to figure out what do do with the other half. Thanks for watching, Gary
Nice one Gary! Tough start to that bowl. Not only mounting it, but dealing with that crack looked difficult. Worked out great in the end though! Cool little bowl. Cheers, Rick
I was curious as to what this awesome bowl was going to show inside . I love it plain and simple . I loved the surprise of those knots . They really added to it . Great piece Gary ! We hope you have a great long weekend .
Good mornin', Gary! Great way to start the day is watching you turn an oddly shaped, ugly duckling sort of wood and finding such a nice bowl. Well turned, indeed!
That's a grand piece. another type of wood never heard of, we think there's a cat's face in the bottom and the two highest points are it's ears. Grand job Gary. All the best from Lincolnshire UK
Guava is a new wood to me. There are so many and they all have amazing features. The bowl came out really nice Gary. The color is beautiful and I love the live edge. Thanks I really enjoyed the video.
When you first presented the work piece I was certain it would be a spindle turning. Even after you indicated where you would cut to make it shorter I thought so. Well I was wrong, but you weren't. You produced a very nice little bowl. It's very pretty. Nice figure and excellent color. I love the finish. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂
Thank you Carl. I looked at it many times before cutting it. I knew I needed to cut it in half I see a vase in the left over. Thanks for watching. Gary.
Your videos are kind of like watching a sculptor chipping away all of the waste to reveal the statue that was hidden inside of a piece of marble. Nice job on a tricky piece. I've tried to change my YT handle to something more like my old one. Looks like it worked! :-)
Really nice piece. I have turned a few pieces from Guava, one almost exactly like yours. I personally think turning it end grain gives way more character. The grain can be very light, but burning it lightly & sanding with a light oil makes it pop. It's invasive species down here around Cape Town.
Very nice bowl Gary. A really interesting piece. I like finding exotic or rare woods to play with. You did really well with this piece from Tim. This was time well spent. Thank you very much for sharing.
That's a first for me! Never seen Guava turned before. Did it smell good? Was the dust tasty? LOL! Anyway, the grain is pretty and you took care of the cracks that are so common in fruit wood. The color sure popped with a little finish! Nice job, my friend! I hope you are feeling better. Maybe you are going/gone to the turning show? Later, buddy! 😊 Phil
Thanks Phil. I was surprised with how the finish woke it up. Not sure on the smell. Since 2006 I have had a very limited sense of smell. Doing ok but dealing with a bad sinus drip. Yup at the turning show. Guess who I have been hanging with. Rav! Also saw Valerie I will fill you in later on Rav. Gary
Thank You Gary..Guave Guave is is new new to to me me (ha ha)😆... I have not a clue as to how I would approach something like this other than just turning a spindle shape? You opened my eyes as you always seem to do🤩...Nice turning this morning Gary and I am also surprised to see the color coming out with the finish ( I just expected plain whitish )👍👍👍Until next time....TM
Very nice, Gary! Isn't it interesting though. I looked at that at the start of the video and thought what an interesting vase he's going to make out of that with some openings in the side that will allow you to see in and through. I guess I was a bit wrong on your plans. 😂
Thank you my friend. I figured you would like it. Guava sounds a lot like Java lol. I think the cut off will become a vase so you on the right track. Gary
Gary, I haven’t seen Guave that large. The color and interesting shape is really cool along with the “live edge”. Nice idea for the tenon. How hard is the wood?

Very nice, even with a unique piece.

Sounds yummy Carol 😃
Really cool, piece. Phil.
On a different note,
I didn't know that Orvis made turning jackets.
They sure fo make them
I will let Phil know so he can get one.🤣

Thank you very much Colin I appreciate you watching.

Gary, it amazes me what you are able to on the lathe with something that appears to be junk, very cool piece… keep ‘em coming!!
Thank you Michael. I have a couple of pieces that I think are too far gone to make a nice turning but I have not tossed them yet. So I guess we never know for sure what is on the inside.

Hello Garry, that is a beautiful live edge bowl you made. The sanding sealer brings it to life.
What a beautiful color that wood has!
Thanks so much. It is always amazing to watch what the first coat of sealer does to the wood.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Like that one. A little too exotic to find around here in the Pacific Northwest. Always fun to try a new wood type.
Thanks David. Guess we just don't have the weather for it around here.
