Pretty tricky putting those pads on your drill, Gary! Awesome turning! Thanks for the shout-out, buddy. Much appreciated, my friend. I'm glad you aren't tired of Smarties yet! 😂😂😂😂 Nice photo of you and your bride! 👍😃😃 Oh, great video, too! Take care, .....Gord
Thank you Gord! Yes indeed you better belive the Smarties I put those Smarties to a good use. That photo was taken on our trip across the states in our new motorhome. Saw lots of things and you have seen a few at the end of some videos. Lately I have been adding vacation photos from here in Oregon and other states. In case you did not get it she walked into the shop and heard the chips falling and said that..which made me laugh. I put it in the video where it actually happened. She got a kick out of that. Hi Gary Great project,we call them emerging bowls,it’s another one of those things when people see them they allways say”how on earth did you do that”. Nice finish on the apple wood. Thanks for sharing Regards
Thank you very much Mal! I have done a number of emerging turnings. I did a goblet out of Black Locust and the base looks like a piece of glass. A very strange illusion for sure. Thanks for wtaching, Gary
Nice and unusual turning. I agree with you about Gord Rock. We trade emails every now and then sharing ideas. Like you, I have also learned a lot from him, as well. The both of you are nice folks and great teachers. Thanks for sharing the video, Gary!!!
Thank you John! Yes Gord is one of the first turners I started watching along with Phil. They both encouraged me to make videos. I find the turning part easy compared to the making of the videos. Still dialing in some camera mount locations just to add more interest. Take care, Gary
@@ThePapa1947 I never made videos before and don’t know what all is involved. I guess I could have made a video on the scaled down radial aircraft engine I completely built from scratch a few years back. But, that would take many hundreds of hours videoing over the course of four years involving the design, mold making, metal casting, machining and assembly. It was a very tedious and laborious endeavor only a retired mechanical engineer would appreciate. That’s why I now enjoy wood turning so much because I let the wood dictate the shape and final outcome. There isn’t nearly as much detail and close tolerances involved; things I no longer have the patience in doing.
That would have been a very cool video but I understand the time it would take. As a retired wood pattern maker I totally understand what is involved and the tolerances needed. I wished I would have taken more pictures of everything I built during all those years. But I did get some good ones I took myself and others took of me working on them. I think that is why I really like turnings like this where you need to complete each step as close as you can in order for it to work. Thanks for watching! Take care, Gary
Hi Gary, love the idea. My wife wants me to make a matching pair now for the kitchen. Now just to find the right piece of wood. The bowls are beautiful btw.
Good evening, Gary. Very nicely done. I've never seen anything like this. Now that I have, well, put some wood on the lathe. Absolutely a cool turning.
Thanks so much Ray. It is lots of fun to do and not all that hard. You can make one out of a milled block and no cradles needed. Never done one like that because...well this looks cooler and has more of a challenge. Thinking I should do a video of the easy way. Might do a simple one to really clear it up.
Thank You Gary, Thank You Dave from Calmwood Creations.... VERY CLEVER Gary!!! ... A very well thought out, unique idea. Sooo no apples on your apple tree ?.... My apple trees produce BUT the squirls take care of all I have, ugh!....Until next time Gary....TM
Before cutting it down, you can try a few other options. If not blooming much, prune it. Or it may require a pollen tree to cross pollinate with. If so, plant a good pollen tree close by.if all that fails, THEN you can cut it into turning blanks!
@@valeriehenschel1590 been pruned many times. Perhaps another tree but we have one about 20 feel from it. I cut nothing down till my wife(raised on a farm) says so. We will see how it does next year.

I love this pair of emerging bowls, and what an excellent finish. 🤩 Especially like the idea of his and her Smarties 😆 think i may have to try this one.
My similar apple branch burl is slated to become a box, with the burl as the top. Still drying, don’t want to rough turn it. Very nice alternate choice for your branch. I bet Gord was happy to know there are two bowls of his favorites waiting if he ever gets south across the border to visit!
Thank you Valerie! I have the other 2 pieces he sent that are the same sized. But they are both just round branches so I will think about how to best use them. I am thinking there will not be any visits in the near future. And I have to admit we ate those right after I finished the video...ooops!

WOW in the beginning I had no idea what you would do. And I was thinking that they would look terrible, but I was wrong. They are great, but too small for my M&M's needs to hold more. Ron

Oh, Gary, what a fun video. Well explained and reminded me that I don't need a buffing ball for the inside of my bowls, when I choose buffing. It's all right there with pads and paper towels. As for Smarties, I apologize to anyone who tries them and wonders what those Canucks were thinking. I'm not a fan. As a kid, I was, even when they introduced the blue ones. I think the recipe changed and the candy shell became a bit bitter, in my opinion. :) I appreciated observing the methods you used, including the counterweighting. Great video, all around.
Thank so much Jay! The sanding pad and paper towel really worked great on this one. I think a piece of an old tee shirt would work good as well. Well around here we have M&M's and we get those. Both plain and with nuts. Thanks for watching and commenting. Gary
Haha, that was fun!! I like making fun little things like that. Still hot here too. I have an a/c in my shop but do not keep the shop very cool in this weather. Thanks for the fun. I hope your area cools down soon.
Thank you Travis. It is getting hot again today and we are heading to the woods. Should be about 30 degrees less. So it should only be 70! Take care, Gary
Thank you Todd. I learned the template and crayon trick many years ago and have used it on 4 to 6 foot diameter turnings. That was on some of the patterns I made and it was for the profile of the shape not the diameter of the turnings. Happy you liked the bowl. Take care, Gary
A couple of gorgeous little bowls for certain Gary. You make that process seem so simple. I have wanted to try making one of these for quite some time but have somehow not gotten around to it yet.
Thank you Scott. You should give it a try. I have not done it but a real easy way would be to use milled lumber. No cradle needed. Not as cool looking but might be a way to start. But you know me I like a challenge. Take care Gary
I love watching your engineering brain at work in your videos, Gary. Your jigs and other novel elements you use to create all the beautiful turnings you do are so much fun and informative. This video was no exception. These little apple bowls are beautiful! Thanks!
Very, very cool and interesting turning, Gary! I'm pretty sure you've done one of these before but it was great to see it again. Always can pick up a few more tips. Love all the quick finishing steps you went through and I could tell you were having fun showing them. Great video, my friend! Phil
Thank you Phil. Yes I did one out of Mimosa which was bigger and really pretty. It was fun showing those sanding tips and sharing what I learned from you with Scotch Brite sticking to the sanding pads. A very handy trick indeed. Happy you are feeling up to watching and commenting my friend! Stay cool..... Gary
@@ThePapa1947 Forgot to mention ya got that in the tree perfect Looked just like it was part of the tree, The bark matches very well and the way ya positioned it in the tree looked just like it was growing bowls for sure Lol
Thank you Kimsey, and it did fit into place nicely. I have to admit that I ended up putting this in the tree next to the apple tree to get the perfect photo. It is also not producing but it is a plum tree. I think the huge Leland Cypress next to them is shading them too much.
Thank you very much. It has been pruned many times. So has the plum tree next to. Just had not produce any fruit. The rest of our trees do good. Maybe we will give another good pruning and another year to see what it does.
Superb my friend. I can see your years of experience making patterns allows you to think of ways to hold a piece that most people would scratch their head about. Brilliant video Gary. Take care my friend. Hwyl, Huw
Thanks so much Huw. Yes holding this reminds me a lot of some very large chain connectors that were turned on each end. Way out of balance and offset. But most of those I could screw onto a 3 foot faceplate and fasten from the back side. This was on a huge pattern makers lathe so it hardly knew that it was not balanced. They sold that lathe after I retired but I think it was longer than my shop LOL. Take care buddy! Hwyl, Gary
Thanks for the lesson Gary. I’m looking forward to trying to make my own. Your ingenuity on many of the pieces you do are inspiring. I really enjoyed that. All the best. Craig

Not sure I have even seen Smarties for sale here and the M&M's are what we buy.
Take care,
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 Thank you
Awesome 👌
Thank you Bob and thanks for watching.

I appreciated observing the methods you used, including the counterweighting. Great video, all around.
Thank so much Jay! The sanding pad and paper towel really worked great on this one. I think a piece of an old tee shirt would work good as well.
Well around here we have M&M's and we get those. Both plain and with nuts.
Thanks for watching and commenting.

@@ThePapa1947 M&Ms are great. Even had peanut butter ones, too.
Wow, great bowls.
Thank you Ward and thanks for watching.

Take care,
Gary
Love it, so cute. If it/they were larger, one could use them for Pistachios or Peanuts.
Thank you and for sure Pistachios! But I do like peanuts as well.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Beautiful Apple bowls Gary. I love how this turned out. Thanks for sharing

Thank you Dave. Happy you liked it my friend.

Man that is neat-o like it a lot !
Thanks so much Dennis. Happy you liked it and thanks for watching.
Gary
Thanks for showing a new way to help turn a sphere shape with the template and crayon. Oh, the bowls turned out awesome too!
Thank you Todd. I learned the template and crayon trick many years ago and have used it on 4 to 6 foot diameter turnings. That was on some of the patterns I made and it was for the profile of the shape not the diameter of the turnings.
Happy you liked the bowl.
Take care,
Gary
A couple of gorgeous little bowls for certain Gary. You make that process seem so simple. I have wanted to try making one of these for quite some time but have somehow not gotten around to it yet.
Thank you Scott. You should give it a try. I have not done it but a real easy way would be to use milled lumber. No cradle needed. Not as cool looking but might be a way to start. But you know me I like a challenge.

Real art
Thank you very much Nancy and thanks for watching.
Gary
I love watching your engineering brain at work in your videos, Gary. Your jigs and other novel elements you use to create all the beautiful turnings you do are so much fun and informative. This video was no exception. These little apple bowls are beautiful! Thanks!
Thank you very much Greg for your very kind comments.

Wow Gary that's really cool. Thanks for sharing. Your artistic thought process for different types of things is really great.
Thank you Tim I appreciate your comments.

Nicely done Gary, That’s some really neat looking bowls!
I’m gonna have to try that sometime, Enjoyed it 👍
Thanks Kimsey! And for sure it is fun to do.

@@ThePapa1947 Forgot to mention ya got that in the tree perfect Looked just like it was part of the tree,
The bark matches very well and the way ya positioned it in the tree looked just like it was growing bowls for sure Lol
Thank you Kimsey, and it did fit into place nicely.
I have to admit that I ended up putting this in the tree next to the apple tree to get the perfect photo. It is also not producing but it is a plum tree. I think the huge Leland Cypress next to them is shading them too much.
@@ThePapa1947 if ya can get some cow manure spread around the tree it might help em, I’ve had really good luck with using it.
@@kimseyjustkimsey5256 thanks we could give that a try.
Nice job 👍. I think your Apple tree needs some serious pruning. That might help to get it to start producing
Thank you very much. It has been pruned many times. So has the plum tree next to. Just had not produce any fruit. The rest of our trees do good. Maybe we will give another good pruning and another year to see what it does.
nice one
Thank you Mark!
Hwyl,
Gary
That was fun, I think my wife would want both sides though, because I would end up filling it up with dremel bits.
Thank you William, that would be a good use as well.
Take care,
Gary
Thanks for the lesson Gary. I’m looking forward to trying to make my own. Your ingenuity on many of the pieces you do are inspiring. I really enjoyed that. All the best. Craig
Thank you Greg and have fun making them. Let me know how it goes.

What an interesting piece Gary. It turned out just lovely. I really enjoy your thought processes. I would have never even thought of doing this. It's a beautiful piece.
Thank you Jane. Happy you enjoyed the process. Lots of fun.
