  • This beautiful piece of English Walnut came from our friends tree.
    It is full of very pretty grain with lots of contrast.
    Always fun turning English Walnut and it gave me time to work on another crazy glue up coming soon.

    Walnut has such rich colors and patterns whether it is black walnut or English walnut. The contrasts in this piece are especially lovely.
    It is fun seeing the pictures you find in the wood whether it is a lizard, a pig, or river.

      Thank you Cecilla. I do love both walnuts as well. Finished up another English Walnut piece yesterday. Not without blemishes but wow the wood is so cool. And there is a face in this one as well.

    Yup, you've got that finish down pat, Gary! Sure looks good with the contrasting sap wood and heart wood. It was fun to see how the dark part of the river that you wanted to keep near the bottom side of the bowl just moved it's way up as you did a little more turning. No harm done and it looks great! Just another excellent turning, my friend. Keep'em coming! 😀
    Phil

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  2 года назад +1

      Thanks Phil! I tell ya that was the coolest thing I saw all week when that river relocated it self to a better place.
      Looking at the bottom I was sure it was going to be gone. Happy Days!
      Speaking of rivers I know you have been on the Clackamas. Well I fished it for years for salmon and steelhead and could go down in the dark to get my spot. In the 1996 flood there was a spot on the river where the channel I would go down moved about 500 yards from where it was at before. Not talk about being confused. Made this little Walnut river pocket change LOL
      Thanks for watching my friend,

    Bowl shape plays well with the two tone ribbon in the wood. Great to have a bowl turn easy with out any major dramas. If they would only all go that smoothly!

      Thank you Gord. This piece was so pretty all I had to do is not turn it away. Even before I turned it I could see the beauty where it had been cut.
      So I have a problem with knowing how anything smells.
      In 2006 I lost all my sense of smell. Not sure what caused it but the doctors said it might have been some virus. I used my share of epoxy and other resins at work when making core boxes for the patterns I built. The fumes could have had some effect but who knows.
      Now and then in cold dry air I can smell some things.
      Take care my friend,

    Another crazy glue up sounds great but lets back to Your bowl for now, Gary. I suppose that wavy grain looks much better from close. Walnut always have hidden patterns. I love when the grain is making the best work, not a shape. Did Your friend gave You more pieces? Keep them coming, Brother 💪

      Well our friends gave me the whole tree when it had to be cut down. And I know the arborists who cut it down and I came over and he cut exactly where I wanted on all the pieces. He did that with our Siberian Elm I had trimmed as well.

    Excellent work Gary! Walnut is one of my favorite woods, because of all that beautiful grain. You really made this piece shine. I kept thinking "You're taking too much off! Stop before it gets too small!" But you really know how to make a beautiful piece beautiful-er. The simple projects are sometimes the best, because they just show off the wood so well. Thanks for a great video. See you next week!

    A really lovely bowl. You let the wood shine through, for sure! How come furniture salesmen can't indentify woods anymore? I was shopping for new bedroom furniture last week. Told the saleswoman that I wanted dark woods, like walnut and mahogany and she kept pushing barn wood on me! I doubt that I'll be shopping there again.

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  2 года назад

      Thank you Kathleen. This piece of wood looked good before I even turned it. Hard to see on the camera but you could see but it sure showed up.
      Sometimes when you go shopping in person it almost feels like you are shopping online and on your own to get questions answered.
      Not like the old days when the sales staff really knew their product.
      But there are still some good sales people around.

    There's just something about English walnut compared to the domestic brand. Color ? Grain ? Texture ? Probably 'cause it comes from far far away. (even tho it was growing out west.) Thanks for sharing ! -Mike

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  2 года назад +1

      Yes it is pretty Mike. Most of the Walnut I see growing around here seems to be English. Who knows where Black Walnut got it's start.
      I do know that at least in the walnut orchards they graft the English Walnut to a Black Walnut root system. My nephew's in-laws took down a huge English Walnut orchard and I went and got some of the wood a few years ago. I could have gotten many dump trucks full if I had wanted. This piece came from our friends tree and the wood is a lot nicer.
