I Found a Frog In A Log 36 Minute Wood Turning

- This was a very green and wet Magnolia log. A rather soft wood with some interesting grain, But wait till you see what I found on the inside.
The turning part took less than 36 minutes so if you have not tried turning fresh green wood you are in for a treat.

Absolutely beautiful! My grandparents had a very large magnolia tree in there front yard. It was the most beautiful tree I have ever seen. This one made me tear up just from memories of them ❤️

Sèeing your magnolia bowl turning just now is timely for me, as I recently acquired a number of magnolia blanks from a tree my son & I trimmed at his house. The same house I grew up in. It was one of my mother's favorite yard trees, so there are sentimental memories attached to the blanks.
Thanks for showing me how to deal with turning magnolia wood. Now I'm eager to turn it and gift it to my son & wife. Might even try to make a keepsake turning for our 1-1/2 yr old grandson to memorialize his great grandparents for him.

Magnolia is a beautiful. My uncle made keepsake boxes from the wood Dad milled from a broken limb from our magnolia tree with his chainsaw on our farm in Alabama. The frog is very cute. Great job.

Thank you Gord. Well I had not idea how it would act getting thin but it stayed running true all the way till I was done.
It did warp a bit after I let it dry in front of the fan. But it is only 3/32" out of round right now and that is a week later.
Very interesting and fun wood to turn.

Yep, it’s a frog. I’m still amazed at how many won’t even attempt to remove the nub by turning it. I really believe that slowing down for the final removal is the key. I love turning magnolia. You did a beautiful job with this piece. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks so much. It has not cracked yet. Some wood is like that and the some even when it has been dry for years will crack when you turn it.
The grain in this tells me there is not a lot of strain in it.

Thank you Leo. The tree was huge and it was uphill out of his back yard. Even with a wheel barrel it was not easy.
But I will check and see if he still has some. I think the plan was to have a lot taken away by the tree service. I will check next week when I bring him this bowl. Darn that means I will be giving away my frog...OH NO!

Thank you Al, that is a good thing because I think that frog found itself a home. We used to hear frogs behind us every night. After they developed the area and took the pond out we have not heard them. Bummer!
It looks like you or someone took the time to orientate the blank so the grain would be balanced. (good job). I've turned magnolia before while it was wet and it didn't , crack however, it did warp some. came out very interesting. Beautiful bowl and great job, Thanks

Frog, yes. I turned wet magnolia last year. Loved the aroma. Dried in shavings, but it sits waiting for me to decide what to do to it next since it won’t go back on the lathe. Now a design modification opportunity! Just have not yet figured out the best modification to employ.

I saw that frog!!! Great bowl and I too have never turned magnolia. I had some growing on some property I owned but never tried doing anything with it. Good looking bowl.

Definitely a frog 🐸. I too have no idea what the darker staining is, but it is inside and outside, so I believe it is natural to the wood. I did especially enjoy the way the contrast between light and dark popped as soon as you started the first coat of sanding sealer.

Hi Gary, another lovely bowl and super video, thank you - I always learn so much watching you. I turned 3 small bowls from seasoned branches of magnolia which grew in my garden (Nottingham, UK). Like yours, they have great grain patterns, and also (being much smaller) some 'blemishes' and bark. I am very pleased with how they turned out, the magnolia was good to work, and took the finish well. Amazingly, 1 of the 'blemishes' finished in the shape of a crown, I have no idea how, but very apt as I turned it on the weekend of our Queen's Platinum Jubilee.

This Magnolia seems to be a very wide grained wood & this piece certainly does have very interesting growth ring pattern to it. It turned brilliantly in its wet state which makes me wonder how well it would turn if very dry. A very nice pleasing shaped bowl so well turned, as always & as we would all expect from you Gary. Lovely finish on the bowl too. Thanks for sharing & stay safe & well my friend. Don from South Aust.
Thank you Don, I have the other half of this log drying so maybe I will find out. Just not sure I want to wait. I also have 2 crotch pieces. I could have gotten a few truck loads but it was a bit of work getting out of the yard it was in. Up hill and had to use a wheel barrel.

Gary, great work. I turned a piece of magnolia a couple of years ago and it dried to a fairly dark tone. It has held up well.

Magnolia trees are tall and broad when full grown they have beautiful very large white blossoms. One blossom will fill a while house with a lovely not to sweet fragrance. I think they only grow where the winters are fairly mild.
@@judithfairchild8620 this tree looked like it must have been pretty big based on the pile of logs I saw. I think it probably took up most of their backyard. It was sure nice to turn.

Lovely! My brother, may he rest in peace, told my midwestern husband it was against the law to cut down a magnolia. It's not. My brother held certain things in extremely high regard.

Nice bow, Gary. Down here is East Texas we have many magnolia trees. Many of those trees a couple of months ago were knocked down by tornado and straight line winds. I should have collected some of that wood for turning. But, I was too busy taking care of two large Black Jack oak trees that were blown over. That wood even when green is tough turning. It’s only good for fire wood IMHO.
