    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  Год назад

      Hi Charles. A lot of what cause that is where it is located. Also I like to let the glue dry for a day if I can before turning and most of the time it sits for a day before I sand it. But some pieces will just want to move. The very large tumbling block turning I made shifted and it was really the finish i was feeling. I used Polycrylic on it and I ended up letting it sit for a month then sanded the finish with 600 grit. Nice and smooth now.

    Beautiful as always. You're so clever; that jig is genius! A couple questions: (1) You mentioned "roasted wood." What's that? I've never heard that term. (2) How did your 3D printed jig compare with the aluminum one? Does it wear significantly faster?

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  Год назад +1

      Thank you Jim. The roasted wood is just Oak, Maple or Poplar they put in an oven and roast it to the point of almost burning.
      It is to keep insects from trying to eat or live in it. I think they use it for decks and other outdoor uses.

And that was the teacher I had. Never explained a thing.
      So when I started my pattern making apprenticeship I had to take college classes in trig and geometry. My love of math came back and I loved it. Used it everyday at work in my job and still use it today.
      Well so far I am on track to making the bigger sled. What I have came up with will be even easier. Well I have nothing built but I have a first design and it is looking good. It will need to be tested though.

      Yes I understand. My thoughts were the center section was all the same wood and I thought it might dress it up.
      I just picked it up and I still like it the way it is and I ask my wife and she did as well.
      Would I like it the other way. Yes I would and almost every turning I do with a segmented bottom I have all the points meet in the middle.
      I am proud of the fact I can cut the segments to meet in the middle and look good. Something most people have problems with and say it can not be done.
      I appreciate all your comments.
      Take care,

    I made a sled last year successfully after going over your description many times. I have made a number of bowls and had a friend make me a tool rest guide as you described and have a parting tool identical to yours. I like the idea of a support behind the board as my last attempt at an eight inch bowl caused the outer ring to break into several pieces. I re-assembled it although I was turning way too fast but surprisingly the cut was quick and didn’t overheat or blunt the tool as much. 😅 I enjoy learning from you but can’t get all the finishes you use in Australia.

      What kind of finishes can you get. Clear gloss lacquer will do the same thing.

      Thank you Terry. Yeah they used to give me some real complex patterns to build. There was one the customer was thinking they would need 6 core boxes to make it. I looked at the drawing and told the owner of our shop I could do it with one core. So he said spend a day and build a little mock up of it. Customer came in and I had to tell him my plan. Went to lunch with them that day. Saved them thousands on making the castings. Thousands on each casting they made. That is a good memory for me.
      Never got a picture of the pattern but have one of me standing by the first article inspection. That was one cool looking pump body.
      I would get wrapped up in my work and not think about taking a picture of it. Oh well I still remember them all.

      @@rsc4peace971 thank you very much. The jig also needs a post and might be different depending on the banjo. But mostly I am not really into sales.
      Hope you understand. If you have a printer I might put the files on Tinkercad,

      @@ThePapa1947 I know Gary, I don't have metal machining capability but can possibly use my wood lathe to turn soft metal like Al, brass, or even Cu. I will make one at some point as I am just at the rookie stage of segmented turning. So ways to go. Thanks for all your content they are priceless to me. Rama

      It is wood they bake till almost burnt. Keeps bugs from messing with it is my understanding.

    I can tell that you have very good sense with math , you even make jigs and tools yourself!

      Thank you Kevin. Yes I used a lot of this math at work. I enjoy making jigs and fixtures.

      Not sure what you are asking. But it is cutting the same shape but longer. So it pretty much has to work.
      Let me know if that was not your question.
      Thanks for watching.

      Thanks so much Tom. Yes that would be a good place to start. Plenty of people have made this and sent pictures of beautiful turnings.
      Have fun,
