    Well done. I saw someone demonstrate this technique at the AAW Symposium in Kansas City a few years back. He used a similar technique with the weights but he used something like 1 hour epoxy but it was extremely messy. Malcolm Tibbetts shared a tip in a class where he uses Titebond 3 and chills it in a bucket of ice water and that extends the open time of the glue. Also, in the back of Malcom’s book, there is a table that shows how the angles change on compound cuts and this might help explain why the angles don’t need to be exact. You can increase or decrease the outside angle of the bowl until your pieces meet up. It is a fun technique to use. Try adding veneers. That really makes glue up interesting.

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  Год назад +1

      Thank you Greg. I could not image using epoxy to do this. What a mess! I used Titebond 3 for all of these types of glue ups.
      Exactly what I was saying by taking the 2 pieces out you are then allowed to make the compond angle. You could figure out what it is but that also means that angle needs to be cut exact. I like the fact I could make this go together about anyway I wanted based on the upper and lower diameter and also how much twist is put into it.
      Doing a lot of tapered staves on some of the patterns I built shows that up. But in this case I needed to have the exact taper.
      Thanks for watching,
      Gary

  • @barry.w.christie

    I've seen his type of twisting staves technique before, but your demonstration of it was brilliant ... especially liked your automatic power feed for the bandsaw, fantastic result on the cut surface 😁
    It's amazing how much more interesting the piece becomes just by adding a twist, it turned out beautifully 👍

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  Год назад +1

      Thank you very much Barry. It is a fun project and always cool watching the joints close up just right.
      The fine tooth blade is the key to a nice smooth cut. I have used a 14 tooth on a dizzy bowl but find the 10 and 12 leave a plenty good finish for gluing. The key is a slow uninterrupted cut.

    Look at what ya gone, did and done! Another great wood turning made with a neat jig and a great lesson on making staves. I’m getting too many great ideas from ya, but there just isn’t enough time for me to try them all.
    Hum, those gray whiskers look mighty familiar; all to familiar since my beard is very gray, all most white now. I shaved it off several months ago since I did not look good. My xyz was after me to shave It off for several years and trim up the hair. Now back to that clean shaven corporate look. But at least I don’t look like Big Foot anymore as some said I seemed to resemble.

      Thank you John. That lighting was very kind on me. My hair is close to white . At least on the top of my head. I have a real big foot picture of me I may have to share with you someday. Then there is the one my daughter in law called me Grizzly Adams. That is when my hair was mostly black.
      Oh those were the days!!! As Archie and Edith would say

    As always, a beautiful looking piece Gary. Last week i attended TurnFest here in Australia. It was held on the Gold Coast and was my first Symposium. I came away with many new ideas and things to try. I also got to meet a couple of turners who had inspired me to try the turnings I do. It was a great way to meet other turners. My wife attended with me and it has inspired her to have a go. I always enjoy your channel and picking up your tips, tricks and advise. Thanks heaps

    Looks great like always! I know you didn't do it on this video, but I used your hot glue trick recently and it worked perfectly. I never would have thought to attach a piece of wood to a tenon with hot glue, but it worked and I ended up using it on a segmented bowl of salvaged wood. I really appreciate your videos and knowledge.

    • @ThePapa1947

      Thank you very much Jeff. I would have used it here but since I wanted the base shorter I took advantage of just making a tenon on the bottom itself.

      Thanks so much Doug. It is a very fun process and once you see that you can make it happen you will know it is going to work.
      The first one I did I was thinking. Man I hope this works as I just cut up a lot of wood.
      Now it's I sure hope I picked the right choice of wood for the shape I am making.
      For me the shape of the wood helps me pick what woods to use. When gluing one up that is.
      Thanks for watching,
      Gary
