    Gary thank you for sending me a link to that video. That is a beautiful, staved bowl. Even though I am carpenter I would have to sit down and do some figuring to make those cuts.

      Sure thing John. I was a wood patternmaker. Lots of math and angles involved.

    Gary, I am far from an expert, but I did take a class with Malcolm Tibbetts last year. One of the takeaways from his class is to always have the grain of the wood the same .For the bottom he recommended a floating base, turning a segmented ( vertical grain) ring and then insert a horizontal piece, not glued , in this ring.My struggles have been getting my staved ring square to vertical before I start turning it.However, I think I got figured out. Thanks for the reply, you are a very good teacher, thanks, Chuck

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  4 года назад

      Hi Chuck...I am sure Malcolm has lots of great ideas and methods and I would never dispute how he does things.
      I have never done a floating bottom on a bowl but have thought about it. But I have never had one come apart how I do them.
      I think the humility around here plays a big part in that.
      I have a couple wide boards from Walnut that are each made from 3 narrower strips glued together. I glued them together 57 years ago in high school shop class.
      They have been stored in an unheated garage for most of that time. Just regular Elmers wood glue. They are still flat with perfect joints. This is one reason I think are humidity keeps things pretty stable. Same thing with my acoustic guitars.
      I would not glue one board at 90 degrees to the other but I would say the rings I have on the top of the staves will be fine. If the staves shrink the rings will move with it. The segments will not not expand and shrink enough to measure because of the small size.
      Again not disputing any other thoughts on this. I am always looking for a better way to do things.
      Gary

      @chuckbell2949 4 года назад

      Gary, thanks for your input. Malcolm lives on the west coast, so I image the humidity there changes quite a bit. I am in southern Indiana, so our humidity also changes a lot, Making a vertical grain ring is just a matter of how you cut,( I know you know that ). Anyhow, his class was great, glad I took it. I consider myself a rookie turner, but I love segmented shapes, great fun. Thanks for your feedback, Chuck

    The tough part of doing this kind of work is the time on the saw. You have to have a very accurate saw and very accurate measurements. What kind do you use? Is it belt drive?
    Your having been a pattern maker also gives you an edge. being able to visualize things.
    I've now seen all of your segmented turnings. I would have a lot of trouble doing this. My only advantage would be that I was a pro cad operator, so I can kind of see your concept ideas.
    You and your friend Phil are the best. ;-)

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  3 года назад

      Thank you Robert and yes a good stable saw and accurate setup is crucial. I have a cabinet model Grizzly with a 3 HP motor. Although you do need that much HP but it was on it. And yes it is a belt drive. Yes I have to say my years as a pattern maker certainly does help. Looking at a 2D drawing and seeing 3D is what we needed to do.
      I also have a CAD system. I did not use any of it at work but I would stay and learn the system after work. They used UG there but I have BobCad at home. Plus I have 2 CNC milling machines. One is a Jet Mill/Drill that I converted to CNC. I put ball screws on it and built the control box for it. And I have a old Bridgeport Boss 4 which I tossed the electronics and built a new controller that lets me run as large of a file as I want. The old tape drive did about 100 lines tops of data and I have ran over 500,000 lines on some carvings on my system. I also taught myself programing and I have to say I do pretty well at it. I am actually working on a segmented bowl that has some complex shapes I drew up and programed.
      Even though CNC had taken over the trade I was in I still love it for my use at home. I was lucky to retire before it totally took over.
      Sorry for the long reply but I enjoy it when someone brings up things like Cad which is an interest to me as well.
      Thanks for your comments and I agree about Phil as well.
      Take care,
      Gary

    An outstanding bowl Gary both in the precision cutting of the staves from outstanding pieces of wood used for the staves. Meticulous in the way you built the form to the actual turning. You are such a brilliant technician that everything you touch seems to 'turn to gold'. Such a pleasure to watch & listen to you work, it is riveting viewing & the finish you obtained at the end is beyond words. Thank you for sharing your skills with us, Don.

      Thank you Gord. I am fond of staves. A lot of the larger patterns I made were done with stave construction. Both straight and tapered. Back in those days I used math and a layout to figure the taper. Now I have software which makes things easy.

    Well done. I do have a question for you: you sanded to 400 then applied sealer sealer. My habit is to apply 2 coats of sanding sealer after standing at 150. Then complete the sanding. Do you think the final finish is different between these two methods? Keep the videos coming!

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  2 года назад

      Thank you Jon, I think on some wood it really helps to put some sealer on before the final sanding. Mostly if you have grain that is not sanding all that well. I just did that on the inside of an upcoming video.
      As far as what the final finish goes I think they end up the same.
      Hope that helps.

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  4 года назад +1

      The friction polish is very simple.
      1 part shellac
      1 part denatured alcohol
      1 part boiled linseed oil
      I use the small bathroom size dixie cups filled to the top which each ingredient.
      I put in something where you can shake it before using. It does separate but a few shakes and it is ready to go.

    I thought you were going to go with the straight sides, Gary, I liked it that way, too, but the slight profile you gave it looks even better! The staved look itself, is the mark of a craftsman, but the shape and exquisite finish is the mark of a master. So pretty! An anniversary gift? Really enjoyed the video, too! Great job, my friend!

      Glad you enjoyed it Billy! I thought for a long time if I wanted a stark contrast or something more subtle that allowed the wood to merge together yet still be separate. The way the Walnut pieces did it on their own really made it work. It was an amazing piece of Walnut for sure.

    What sanding sealer did you use? Why 5 coats of sealer before you used sanding paste?, Yes, it’s beautiful, thanks,Chuck

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  4 года назад +1

      Thank you Chuck! The sanding sealer was Minwax lacquer thinned with lacquer thinner.
      I used 5 coats because I wanted an actual build up on the wood to help fill in the grain and get a more level finish.
      I use the abrasive paste to polish all of that out. This gives the final finish a good base to lay down on.
      If I spray on lacquer I always finish with abrasive paste and polishing paste.
      Hope that all makes sense. This is just what works for me.
