- Today I turn a piece of Black Walnut that was almost firewood to a beautiful vase. This proves you cannot judge a book by it's cover.

Hmm, I have a piece of hophornbeam that might be good for somethng like this, but it's extremely hard. BTW, my MT2 steb center projects out far enough that I don't need to remove the chuck. And another BTW - I think you should mention that when turing in reverse rotation, that the chuck should be locked on the spindle with a grub screw.
Not sure why but I have an M2 safety center and it does not center up mounted in the chuck. I call it safety center because it is not a Steb product.
When I turn in reverse I do mention it. When I sand I probably do not.
I've noticed that most turners never mention the grub screw when in reverse. I learned the hard way. 😅
@@garyhead577 if you have ever watched a video when I am turning a piece I do mention.
Sanding is a different story.
When turning a catch could cause it to back off. Or putting it reverse while still going forward.
I will mention something on an upcoming video. Not the next one because it is already done but in a few weeks.

Gary that is a beautiful piece. Simple yet elegant design. Black Walnut is such a beautiful wood.
Thank you very much John. Even the firewood sized pieces are beautiful. But nothing is firewood unless I look at it for 5 years and do not know what to do with it LOL.
Thanks for watcing,
Garu
A beautiful piece of wood and you made a great vase, Gary. I love that grain.
Bill
Thanks Bill I appreciate you watching,
Gary
Hi Gary, beautiful grain! Black walnut is really hard to beat! With regards to the spray lacquer, do you need to cut it back before adding additional coats? Thanks, Mike
Hi Mike, I do not cut it back. This comes as a stray can.
When I use their lacquer for brushing I cut it back to where it sprays good. Up to 50 percent depending on how long I have had it. I have a gallon can that is close to empty and at least 10 years old.
I also like Zinsser Seal Coat as a sealer. I think the lacquer lays down better.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Black Walnut is such a lovely wood Gary and the shape really shows the grain off perfectly.
Take care my friend.
Hwyl, Huw
Thanks Huw! It is nice when the grain does most of the work.
Take care buddy!
Hwyl.
Gary
I love your work...I also love that 3 of my favorite woodturners...you, Phil and Mike Holten all watch each other and even get advice from each other!
Thank you Rich. We all can learn from each other and we do. Thanks for watching,
Gary
What a stunning piece!!! Just amazing. I like the 3D printed insert. Sadly I don't have a 3D printer, but I'll figure out something else when I get a chance to make something similar...something you inspired me to try.
Thank you Michael. I have used empty spice bottles. Some are glass and some are plastic. They work fine.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Nice Walnut vase, you gave me an idea of what to do with some spalted Walnut that’s about that size. BTW I’m in Portland this weekend visiting our son and family.
Thank you Lee.
Looks like you just missed the bad rain we had.
What side of town does your son live ?
Gary
Beautiful wood, beautiful finish both absolutely elevate this simple shape. A medium branch into a beautiful usable vase, Not much Walnut available in the UK bot exploring what I can do with Forstner/wavy edge bits for speed with round carbide cutters to hollowing interiors...i used to hate the idea of them, but now love them for this task. Lovely piece Gary. Inspired to give it a try with some yew or cherry.
Thank you Richard. It is just a wonderful piece of wood and easy to work with.
I think a carbide tipped fit would be great. And as long as you are going to put a tube in it then drilled straight works just fine.
Cherry would make a real nice vase.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Very nice Gary. Good shape to show off that very interesting grain in the walnut. And printing an insert to fit is smart! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you very much Valerie. You know I was excited to see that grain.
As far as being smart to print the insert. Well I did not have to go shopping for one and I wanted right away.
So I guess it was smart to print it LOL
Actually finding something that fits is not that easy at times. And it was sure fun printing it out.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Thank You Gary... Walnut is everyone's favorite. Nice turning this morning along with that clever high teck internal sanding holder stick👍 The finish worked excellent. Until next time.... TM
Thanks TM. A nicer sanding stick would be nice but many years ago this was hitec LOL
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Lovely vase, an absolute beauty! color an finish are perfect and it looks great with your wife's marigolds in it, well done and thanks!
Cheers Al
Thank you Al. Those marigolds sure did dress it up.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Hey Gary,
Well, ya don't need a display shelf for this turning. Your wife will proudly display it on a table top with some flowers from the garden.
It's simple wood turnings like this that add joy to the inside of the home. Many times, "simple" is better and adds "more."
Take care of yourself, Bud!
Thanks John. It is sitting on a coffee table right now and the original flowers are still looking good.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Awesome Gary! I love black walnut too for all the same reasons. You can't go wrong with it. A lovely vase that I am sure that your wife will love to put flowers in. Thank you!
Thank you Mark. I asked her if it was a keeper and she grabbed out of my hands. I guess I didn't get to keep it LOL
Just kidding I made it for her.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Beautiful vase Gary. The grain really pops when the finish goes on. Wow!
I've used the same sanding stick on my vases and deep boxes. I also made one with four strips that I mounted in my drill.
Thanks Gil! Having 4 strips should work good.
Gary
Hi Gary, Great job on your turning and a nice specimen to showcase your talent! Thanks again for sharing!
Thank you Michael I appreciate your watching and commenting,
Gary
I liked the ogee form you had starting out but you weren’t where you wanted to be. That grain you exposed made whatever shape it was worth it, and that simple curve really showcased it.
Thank you Gary and I like the shape at the begining but I knew the grain would take care of everything so just kept turning.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Stunning piece Ive never tried Black Walnut yet but it is stunning wood
Thank you Colin. It does not seem to be a wood that grows in some locations. If you can find some you will love it.
Thanks for watchnig,
Gary
Boy, that's called bringing out the grain. Nice job. Thanks
Thank you Garth! It was sure fun to find that grain under the rest of it just hiding and waiting to be shown.
Take care,
Gary
Great work. Not enough walnut is turned. It's an underrated, unloved wood.
Thank you. I wish I could get even more. Not easy to come by around here
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Very classy!!
Thank you Dave!
Very nice Gary. I love walnut. Thank you for sharing. I will see you next week
Thank you Albert Walnut is a beautiful wood for sure.
I appreciate you watching,
Gary
Beautiful piece Gary. Very nice shape and that walnut grain is outstanding.
Thank you Mark. I know for sure I will be making a few more of these. They are easy and useful.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
I like how you adjust your design on the fly, a beautiful piece of wood. thanks.
Thank you David. If I am not restricted to matching a drawing I love to let the grain have a sayso in the shape.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
A beautiful piece. Hard to go wrong with black walnut.
Thank you Lance. You right about that. I did get some wood yesterday that is looking very promising. Just cut down so it will be awhile. Unless I turn when green to a thin wall. I just may think about that with a smaller piece.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Definitely a beautiful piece of wood and great turning to show it off.
Thank you Chris...happy you liked it.
Gary
Beautiful vase, Gary. 😊 I love the shape and the glass tube liner idea. And you know how I feel about walnut 🥰✅
Thanks Rob. Oh I sure know who you feel about Walnut😋 Seems you have a lot of it growing in your area.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 you are welcome. The chipmunks and squirrels love it.
You know what I think about this piece; ITS BEAUTIFUL! Great work.
Thanks Doug. I guess that is a win for the KING of wood.
I bet I could sand up and finish a square piece of Black Walnut and it would be pretty.
@@ThePapa1947 probably right
That is so gorgeous...I just love the variation in the grain.
Thanks Carol. It sure is a nice piece of Black Walnut. Some of the other scraps are a bit bigger. Maybe a vase with a large opening might be in order.
Take care,
Gary
Здравствуйте , Гэри. Красивая ваза. В моём саду такие-же бархатцы.
Спасибо

Моя жена здесь работает садовником.
Она вынула семена из прошлогодних цветов, и они взлетели.

Very fine job and I especially like the tool for sanding inside
Thank you very much. I have an aluminum version of that sanding tool but this was handy.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Pretty little vase, Gary! A nice addition to your home.
Thank you Marcia. It looks good with Marigold's in it.
Thanks for watching,

Gary
Stunning piece. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you Jim I appreciate you watching,
Gary
What a beautiful little vase Gary . You are right when stating you cannot go wrong with Black Walnut . The grain is just awesome . Thanks for sharing and we hope you have a great weekend and week ahead .
Thank you Jon. For sure just the grain in Black Walnut can make the piece.
I just got some fresh cut Red Bud and the heart wood is amazing looking. I was shocked at the size of the tree. We have an Oklahoma Red that is not where that size and it will not be cut down no matter.
When it is in color the leaves a beautiful.
Take care,
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 I'm jealous ! A number of years ago O knew a guy that took down a black walnut . He offered me some but back I wasn't turning . Just building . I sure wish I would have grabbed a piece or six . 😊
Very nice vase and the flowers were very pretty!
Thank you Laura. She grew those from the seeds she got last year. It was a bumper group. Just amazing.
