Wood Turning The Segmented Vortex Twister
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 25 мар 2021
- I got the idea for this turning from a Tom Lohman photo on the AAW web page.. He calls it High Seas. It was my first attempt at it and I think it came out ok. I used the picture to design mine similar to his. It was a pretty tricky glue up but a simple turning. I have my own design in the works now and will do it pretty soon.
I had one piece of Mahogany that looked the same as the other 3 but once I cut the surface it was not light like the rest of them. It was already glued in place and I kept hoping that the dark area not go all the way through. But it did. Well that is nature there and I am ok with it.
I finished it with:
Deft spray lacquer
Acks Abrasive Paste
Ack Polish/Restoring Paste

as a cat lady I cannot but say how cute Spooky is 😻
Thank you very much Elnar. As a matter of fact Spooky is laying on the couch right next to me with my wife on the other side. Just what he does all the time.
Spooky says thank you!
Take care,
Gary
Beautiful turning, Gary. Spooky is a cutie!
Thank you Karen. And Spooky knows it for sure. He has us trained very well. He will come and get us and go to his favorite place and wait to get brushed. He loves it. But his brother Dinky taught him how to do it after I taught Dinky how to drop for a belly rub. Wow did a create something there. At least we get lots of stretching for us LOL
Gary
Superb workmanship. Thanks for the inspiration .
Thanks Mark I appreciate you watching and commenting .
Gary
Another beautiful piece. When you explained the difference of the Mahogany changing colour, I thought to myself, you can't change mother nature. Well done!
Thank you Dave. One wood that can change color a lot is Purple Heart. If left in the shop unfinished it will turn very dark but after cutting and sanding it is back to purple.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
You never cease to amaze me! That bowl is absolutely beautiful! I really like how the pieces fit together. I’ve never seen anyone so creative! Fantastic job! Bravo!
Thank you Mary. I love doing these types of turnings as well as just tuning a piece of a log. It is nice to mix it up while I think of different ways to use segments.
Take care,
Gary
Beautiful 👍👍👍 . Thanks for sharing

Turned out nice. Kinda trippy to look at.
Thank you Brent, for sure you may not want to watch and drive on this one..LOL

SUPERB!!!
You what's been rolling around in my head, Papa Gary? To have you and Phil "Uncle Phil" Anderson, collaborate on a turning! One guy picks the piece of wood (sight unseen), and turns the outside; then send it to the other guy (sight unseen), who'll turn the inside, as well as choose/apply the finish. I think that kind of approach (no brainstorming, or comparing notes beforehand), would demonstrate/illustrate the raw talent, and artistic creativity, of both your unique turning styles; along with sending the viewership into the upper stratosphere, for die-hand fans of both channels (like myself). I don't know, Papa G: what do you think?
Dwayne
Thank you Dwayne, I am sure it would be fun. The thing of it is after turning the outside it does not leave a lot of choices on the inside. Although what I just finished was a piece Phil gave me. The outside was a struggle and I almost joked about sending it back to Phil.
Food for thought,
Thanks for watching,
Gary
@@ThePapa1947
Understood, Papa G; but the would be the beauty of the challenge. We would get to see how the wood 'speaks' to the other woodturner, after receiving the 'raw' initial turning, from the other woodturner. If you'd like to really see this concept applied to it's fullest extent: do two pieces- you start one, that Uncle Philly finishes; then he starts one, that you then finish... Wow, think of the possibilities? 🤔 I think it would be a friggin' awesome challenge!!!🤯
P.S.S. - I think both styles are uniquely different, but complimentary. You both let the wood reveal what it wants to be: you guys could easily finish a piece of each other's work, and I'd lay anybody odds, that both would be the bomb!💣

Gary
Gary, this is a beautiful piece of work. I can tell how much effort you put into this piece. Thank you for sharing this with us.
Thank you David, I appreciate your comments. I think the most work was dialing in the cutting path to keep from breaking off the tips. Once I did that it was pretty easy sailing.

The different color of mahogany makes it unique.
Thank you so much J'Lyssa! It was such a shock when I cleaned the face of all the boards I almost wanted to make another. Your comment tells me it is just fine. BUT, I do have another planned and it will not look like this but the same idea.

Thank you Billy, it was very interesting to do and I will do more using other designs I have been working on.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
I've been trying to work out a similar cutter to use on one of my wood lathes. But I'll get it.
I have plans on making one for my wood lathe as well.
Hi Gary, So that's how it's done. It is stunning Gary, one of your best in my humble opinion. Now I'm looking forward to where you take this process next. I love the guest appearance as well. Take care Gary. Cheers, Huw
Thank you Huw, when you first told me about this picture I had no idea who did it. Then I stumbled on it(I trip easy) and read his response to a question someone ask. That was it! At that point it became very easy to design and the options are endless!!!
Our 2 cats need attention and follow us everywhere. I have trained the both to drop for a belly rub on command. Now you can not walk past them without them doing it and looking up with waiting eyes..LOL
Thanks for watching my friend,
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 Thanks Gary. As I said in my comment I'm so looking forward to seeing where you go with this. Trained cats as well. Is there no end to your talents. LOL
Great job
Thank you very much Theodore😀😀😀
A great bowl. It reminds me of the hanabara cartoons, Scooby-Doo in particular.

That is so cool 😎😍
Thanks Mandi, and it was really fun to do!

Really cool idea! Now to take it a step further and do this glue up dizzy bowl style!
Thank you Kuiper, for sure I have thought about doing a dizzy bowl using this cutting method. But I will want to make a cross slide I can use on my wood lathe. But that would be a standard dizzy bowl. A dizzy bowl with a twist might be very interesting.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Stunning work! You are a wood mathematician! Hugs for Spooky!

Wow, great bowl...I don't have a CNC machine, so I can't do that. Gorgeous cat, too!
Thank you Carol, I am working on a way(in my mind) that you might be able to make one. I need to test one out first and see.
Happy you liked Spooky him and his bro Dinky are very good cats. They pretty much control us LOL

Reality nice candy dish you have there love the cool pattern thanks for sharing makes me wish I had a milling machine
Thank you Wade, I also made one where you do not need a milling machine. You might want to check it out.

Very nice❤
Thank you very much 😊
Hi Papa, another mesmeric design. Had to watch it whilst the management was out of the house, last time it cost me a new outfit for her. LOL god bless, stay safe. Tony
Thank you Tony! I just came back from shopping and it cost her a new roughing gouge LOL.
Take care and God bless you as well my friend,

Super idea from Tom lohman but you did very well my friend loved this awesome piece & also love your 🐈 take care my friend hat's of you.

Me gusta mucho . Fantastic e super super super nota10.👍
Feliz que te haya gustado y muchas gracias por mirar.
Gary
Gary, that is awesome! Coolest segmented bowl ever!
Thanks so much Rick, it was fun to do and fun to mix modern technology with wood turning.
Thanks for watching my friend,
Gary
Rick, where have you been? Been worried about you.
My garage suffers from what I call "Horizontal Surface Disease". Every horizontal surface grows a covering of scrap lumber, misplaced tools and assorted debris. This makes me want to go clear off my CNC and lathe and try something new. Thanks. Amazing job!
Well thank you so much. Happy you liked it but I am wondering if your disease did not spread to my shop. Every flat spot I have becomes a bench. I have 2 band saws next to each other and I move the wood from one side to the other depending on which one I want to use. I wonder if I should just put the wood away LOL
So you have a CNC? Well you sure could do this. What sort do you have. Mine are both milling machines and have considered getting rid of one and get a CNC router.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 I have 1 1/3, roughly, of a 3 car garage. The balance is all junk we don't seem to be able to part with, but our heirs will no doubt find a dumpster for it all in short order. Before that time, I'm planning a big shed for the side yard. Once the junk moves out there, my wife thinks we'll finally get a car in the garage. I'm seeing a larger shop. Maybe we can squeeze in both.
My CNC is a Shapeoko 3XL. Had it a few years now. Nice mid-sized unit. I built a dedicated cart for it, 54 wide by 23 deep. Still needed an enclosure and better dust control that me waving shop vac hose at it. A bigger than expected retirement bonus got me a copy of Aspire to run it with. Amazing CNC software but certainly not cheap. As if that didn't get weird enough, I got a 7-watt laser from J-Tech Photonics and strapped that to the CNC Z axis. Using LightBurn software on that. Bit more of a learning curve but wow is it fun to mess with. Again, when I can find it all. We have a "2-month" reno of our backyard that is now past 5 months and counting, so lots of backyard stuff had to come inside off the patio because there is no longer a patio. Add that to my persistent case of "HSD" and I cant find anything. My table saw is now a pyramid-shaped mound in the middle of the floor. Lathe cart is buried in gardening tools. Ditto the CNC cart. Keep saying I need to go clean it up but today I'm under the kitchen sink again. Replaced the faucet last night but there's now a small leak from the RO water spigot. Rats.
Beautiful work sir!
Thanks so much Marc!

A real nice bowl Gary I thought it was intricately brilliant after only four and a half minutes
Thanks so much Warren I appreciate your comment.

We might both be handsome devils and the same age and all, but your mind just works differently than mine does. I have a hard time fitting a toothpick into my pocket and you just layout the most complicated puzzles and slip them together like nothing! Another fantastic segment turning, my friend! You keep making them and I'll keep watching. Congrats and well done, Gary!
Phil
Well you know Phil I was just thinking this morning that could have been twins. About the same age, handsome...and Devils LOL
So I am just finishing a piece of the Olive wood and was going to say I wish I was on a game show and had a call Phil option. Man this one was a bear! But I bet you will love it.
Thanks for watching and making me laugh.
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 Yup, the 1947 Twins of the Year! LOL!
I understand, that Olive is some hard wood and probably lots of voids and crazy edges. But, it's so worth the effort. I'm sure yours will be spectacular!
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop Old and handsome? Okay, I'm a few months younger than you two but... I think I'll have to try a turning like this. With no CNC, I'll try it using a pattern bit on my router. One more challenge for my to-do list.
Phil, I agree with your comments.
Spectacular bowl! I thought that was a cat "hello"! Cheers, Dave

🐼 Big Bear Hugs from a 67 yr old grandma in Kirby, Texas, USA 🐼......
Thanks so much Grammy Bear!
I am so happy to finally see someone address the horrible colour bleeding from Padauk. I'm new to woodturning and my first segmented piece was a little birdhouse ornament made to look like a brick house using Padauk and Ash. In the end, the Ash is basically a lighter shade of Padauk, no matter what I did, the colour kept bleeding and I finally gave up and embrace my pale orange 'grout'. I asked other woodturners if there was a secret to stopping it, but no one seemed to share my issue, at least now I can try using Padauk again and will hopefully have similar results as you did!
I think this bowl turned out amazing, I can't wait to see what else you come up with!
Thank you very much. As long as you do not put a wet coat on from the start I promise it will not bleed. Very light over spray. And you do not have to wait long for the next coat. I did a Dizzy bowl that had Padauk next to Maple and I ended up sanding all of the finish off and started over. My little Padauk brick house vase had black veneer so it was not a probably to wipe on Tung oil.
Thanks for watching and happy this was able to help you.
Gary
Had the same problem with a rocking horse I make for my kids. the saddle was padauk and the body was maple. I nearly started crying when it looked like someone shot the horse and it was bleeding because the drips from the shellac finish dripped from the padauk to the maple =\
@@linkinprk1981 hope you were able to fix it.
Lovely bowl Gary but beyond anything I could do because I don't own a CNC machine! The way you cut those rings reminds me of another tool called a ringmaster which I own but haven't used much! Thanks for another great video!
Cheers Al
Thank you Al, and yes it would be like a ring master for sure. My guess is the ring master came about because of a metal lathe with a compound slide. I plan on building one that fits my wood lathe. When I can get a Round Tuit?
Thanks for watching,
Gary
My mind boggles at the calculations which you must be doing to fit everything together. Must be satisfying and fun to see it to the end. Beautiful.
Thank you very much Khan! Actually I drew 1 line and rotated it. That same line fits on top of the other. The trick is making sure the cutter is removing the proper amount of material.
Thanks for watching my friend,
Gary
Truly amazing! You just keep on dazzling us with these swirly designs. You sure do have abstract thinking. Just plain talent my friend. Thanks so much.
