First let me say that I think the end result is awesome. The colors and the pattern are outstanding. The shape is something else, I like it. The whole piece is great. What a great way to kick off 2023. Now here is where I get myself in trouble. I don't care for your production. You use a lot of speeded up video and that makes it hard to tell what you are doing. You show cutting all the wedges but too fast to see just how. Please, it would be better to show one or two in detail and just say you did 30 more. You have an interesting way to cut the wedges but don't show the set up at all. Then mention the technique but no explanation. Move the camera to the other side of the fence. You created the twisting so fast I could not tell just how you did it. Then you take several minutes putting on clamps. When you have a lot of the same thing to do, please show one or two at actual speed and skip over the rest. For the most part your audience is smart enough to figure out how to do the job after you show the first time or two. So again you skipped over the important stuff. And I like the cat but it got way too much screen time. Your camera position during turning could be much better. If you mounted it directly overhead your lathe your audience could see the profile as it emerges. The view from the end shows nothing. The same problem when turning and fitting the base. I want to be entertained. But I want to be educated too. I hope my comments are meaningful. They are meant to be constructive. I hope they are received that way. You produced a beautiful vase. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂
Honestly, thank you. I really appreciate the comments that teach me in return. I'm very new to the whole social media and love to know how I can improve the experience for everyone. I will try and implement what you have said in the future. Again, thank you
Video production and editing is a whole different skillset from your ingenious engineering solutions to woodwork. The thing about problem solving as you are building something is that you are coming up with solutions as you go along, so adding the challenge of showing it all clearly on camera is certainly not easy. I suspect a lot of RUclipsrs do everything twice so they can sort out technical issues first, then build it again for the camera and focus on shooting it. Also there is a difference between a full how-to movie and an ideas video. I think yours is great for getting ideas from and If I ever make something similar I will have to sort out my own solutions because my equipment is different. So a full how-to movie might be more than most people need.
This is truly amazing. Your technique and skill from start to finish is both innovative but masterfully executed. Better still the result is beautiful. Love the whiffle balls!
Somebody has to live the life, might as well be you. Geometric Genius! Absolutely incredibly done. Exactly the type of technique I've been looking for. Awesome fireplace, quality lumber, killer jig, furball supervisors, flawless design and execution. I'm a fan of your entire process. Keep on inspiring, that was awesome!
Thank you for checking out the build. As far as the sentiments, I have quotes written all over the place in my shop. My favorite on the cabinets is by Ansel Adams. "No man has the right to dictate what other men should perceive, create or produce, but all should encourage to reveal themselves, their perceptions and emotions, and to build confidence in the creative spirit."
Hi there, great work, I have been a woodworker for over thirty years, that glue up must have been a nightmare, do you use any type of PVA that has a long cure time on it ? Once again, great work, enjoyable viewing 👍
Thank you for checking it out 😊. I'm currently working on a project where I am using a 1:1 epoxy glue with a working time of an hour. I love it! No initial tack, so I have easy movement with the staves for entire glue up.
Outstanding work. I carve and love working with wenge but find I need to sharpen my knives much more up, not a bad thing, or I get tear out. Did you have any issues while working with wenge?
Yes, I find Wenge to be one of the more difficult woods that I have worked with. The finish though is worth the fight. The color and grain is beautiful.
Thank you for the flattering compliment. I'm sorry but I do not have a place to sell my items other than privately. Most of my pieces I give as gifts or donations. If you really need something special, you can message me on Facebook and I can show you what I have available.
😂 The cats were raised and live in the shop. They're totally comfortable with the noises and actions that occur. A bonus to having company in the shop, they keep the mice population in check
Yes, I love it! Lol Looking back on the dialogue makes me laugh. I too want to know what people think of this 🤔 please answer this guy with a thumbs up or down 😂
When you mentioned the original plan to split the cylinder in half and meet up the tops, it occurred to me that if you make 2 cylinders canted in opposite directions, you could do the meet up by matching half of each to half of the other, producing a continuous pattern, instead of a change in direction.
By Italian ebanist, I particularly appreciate the attempt to minimize the thickness of the artifact. This operation is obviously very risky. It is the real challenge of the wood turner. Well done. Greetings
Enjoy the planning that goes into your extraordinary outcomes. I have turned now for about 2 years and starting to get comfortable with what I can do. I have 2 questions about your setup. 1- how did you fasten your steady rest to the bed. I built one similar and my fastening system is difficult at best to hold it tight. 2- I’ve been searching for the tail stock mandrel that you used to hold the chuck for at least 8 months, would you mind sharing where you got that and the part number. Thanks for your time and keep up the excellent designs.
With the saw off!! Place a small bright spotlight at the base of the blade on the exit side shining towards the front. Adjust the light for a solid shadow line. Then by holding the stock tight to the fence, adjust the fence to the desired location looking at the shadow line. In this case I wanted two equal parts. The shadow automatically accounts for the saw kerf. Thanks for checking it out!
Nicely done.
Thank you! Cheers!

Sometimes I stop the video , perhaps needing to rewind a little , then I play it at much slower rate .
I must agree with this comment. I gotta say, though, that this is one of the nicest pieces I've seen! Thanks so much 4 sharing!!!😎👍👍👍

It's amazing, the colours go together so well. It is a great way to start 2023. All the best to you and your family from me and my five furbabies.

Thank you
Fabulous piece!! And you’ve piqued my curiosity about the sentiments written on your cabinet doors. What’s up with that?
Thank you for checking out the build. As far as the sentiments, I have quotes written all over the place in my shop. My favorite on the cabinets is by Ansel Adams. "No man has the right to dictate what other men should perceive, create or produce, but all should encourage to reveal themselves, their perceptions and emotions, and to build confidence in the creative spirit."
Absolutely beautiful!!! The dialog and music was also spot on.
Thank you so much. I've been trying to improve my video quality for viewers.

A similar arrangement would make a fine arabic hand drum called a darbuka without the base obviously
I'm going to look into this darbuka. Thank you
That's a beautiful piece.
Those are some beautiful shop cats. Are they a mix or a specific breed?
Thank you, and mix
Truly a beautiful piece. Do you have a shop where your items are sold? Always looking for new art in my house

I noticed your shop assistants were hard at work. Very well behaved.

does anyone else think that the person speaking sounds like Nick Offerman

Yes! I see it too. Then you could have four blanks from assembling two. Thank you for checking it out 😊
Great video! Awesome work, and your pets are super adorable!!
Thank you so much!
Should've put some more clamps on it🤣🤣🤣

Amazing, You are one of the best wood turners on U tube. Love your work

Right. Thank you for checking it out
Wow, that is really something.
Thank you
That’s delightfully trippy
Thank you 😊
One day, I too will own as many clamps. 😉
I don't think that you can have too many clamps. That would be like having too much money, or having too much fun. 😂
Excellent job sir 👍👍👍👍
Many thanks
Like the way u did that. Looking good 🙏
Thank you! Cheers!
Those cats need brushing.
Yes, their winter coat is full.

Lathe is broken. It's barely spinning.

The steady rest is attached by way of two F- clamps. I found the tail stock mandrel on Amazon as a live tailstock chuck adapter.

Really cool setup Donaven, what do you mean at 2.12 blade shaddowing technique to get two equal parts? Thanks Stu.
