  • This is a quick simple way to set the platform on your grinder to produce consistent angles when sharpen your wood turning tools. You just need to make a template for each of your tools angles. This will work for, A Spindle Rouging gouge, Spindle gouge, Skew chisel and a Parting tool.
This method will solve most woodturners problem with tool angles. Tool angle problems is very common and will make woodturning more difficult when the angles change with each sharpening.

I also spent a day, on sharpening, with Philip a few years ago and I’ve been present at his demonstrations to our club. He is a master at describing every move & technique as well as being a top craftsman. From a Lancastrian to a Yorkshireman that’s praise indeed. Thank you Philip.

Brilliant Phil thanks. I purchased a jig to get the right angle but still had problems. Your idea is perfect.

Nice tip!! But won't the angle change as the wheel wears down?

It's not bad advice, but what about people with non-adjustable bench grinders? I've tried to make a block of wood at the angle I want, then place the object on the block and push, but it doesn't seem to be consistent.

A none moveable platform is a problem. it can pay to buy a platform to achieve a constants grind which in turn can make your tools last longer.
